We are now in the last quarter and we will be facing final exams. During the first two weeks of May students will be taking Advanced Placement exams and during the last week of May our seniors will be facing their final exams as Mercy students! Of course, June will be here with the full battery of school and Regents exams. How are we preparing for this inevitable conclusion to the school year? We need you to help us impress upon your daughter that exam preparation begins NOW! Our teachers have scheduled review classes that she should be attending. Your daughter should have review books for many of the Regents subjects and she should be using those books to her advantage. Review classes alone will not guarantee success on exams. Much of the work in preparing for finals must be done by the student herself. Please help us to help your daughter. Inquire about review classes and what she plans to attend. If she claims not to have homework on a given evening, encourage her to spend that “free” time reviewing for one of her finals. The more time and effort she puts into preparing for final exams, the more suc- cessful she will be on those exams. This is also a good time to review your daughter’s course selections for next year. If you are not satisfied with her choices or she has not shared those with you, please give the counselor a call. Our master schedule will be built based on your daughter’s choices and the more accurate we are with course selection, the better chance your daughter will have to get the courses she wants. Your daughter’s selection of course should be based on what her plans are for the future, where she plans to go to college and what requirements those institutions have. If you haven’t had that conver- sation with your daughter, I urge you to do so today! This will help her to avoid disappointment in the future. Enjoy this lovely month. Enjoy your beautiful daughters. Happy Mother’s Day to all of our wonderful Mercy mothers. Say a special prayer to Our Lady to whom this month is dedicated. MMA 3rd Quarter Honors Assembly The MMA 3rd Quarter Honors Assembly was held on Friday, April 24,

2009 in the Mercy Center Auditorium. The entire student body stood in honor of the Senior Class as they proceeded into the auditorium for the last assembly of their high school career. The Seniors entered through the flags of Mercy blue and white, as “Standing on the Shoulders”, a song favored by Mercy high schools across the country, was played. The Senior Student Government and Class Officers offered inspira-tional “Words of Wisdom” to the underclasswomen, advising them among other things to become involved, be kind, be true to themselves, stop and smell the roses, and remember that some of the things they learned in kinder-garten hold true even today. Honor cards were distributed to those students who earned first honors, averaging between 95%-100% for the 3rd marking period. Dr. Karen Huffman, MMA Science Teacher and Moderator of the McAuley Chapter of the National Honor Society, called the names of the newest members, who were inducted into NHS on April 28th. Academic Awards were presented to students achieving high honors in individual subject areas and Mrs. Paula Penepent, MMA Religion Teacher honored student members of the Mercy Speaks organization. Spirit of Mercy Awards, presented to students, staff and faculty mem-bers of the Mercy Community for demonstrating the qualities and charisms of Catherine McAuley, were presented to MMA teachers Mrs. Jean Campbell, Mr. Doug Webster, Ms. Pat Burns, Ms. Cheryl Kisiel and to MMA Senior Hannah Owczarczak for Mercy hospitality, compassionate presence, justice and/or lov-ing kindness. MMA Principal Mrs. Paulette Gaske recognized those seniors who earned the privilege of carrying the McAuley Rose at Graduation. A yellow McAuley Rose, named in honor of the foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, Mother Catherine McAuley, is presented at graduation to those seniors who have devoted over 125 hours of service to school, church and/or the commu-nity over their four years in high school. One hundred hours of service is a graduation requirement at Mount Mercy. Over 75% of the Senior Class of 2009 will carry the McAuley Rose on Graduation Day. Mrs. Gaske also announced the Top Twenty Seniors, those students whose GPA ranks them at the top of their class for their four years at MMA. Those students are: Sarah Antowski, Jane Bednarz, Amanda Cammarano, Colleen Cannan, Leah Clancy, Meredith Graber, Melissa Graham, Rachel Hore, Danielle Koch, Madeline Krautsak, Angela Kresic, Molly Lynch, Meghan Mathewson, Jordan Novak, Megan Pericak, Meg Recktenwald, Elizabeth Robinson, Lydia Rola. Danielle Vaccaro, Theresa Waz. Also, the Salutatorian and Valedictorian of the Class of 2009 were an-nounced by Mrs. Gaske. Congratulations are extended to Valedictorian Mere-dith Graber, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tony Buttino of West Seneca and Saluta-torian Melissa Graham, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eric Graham of Orchard Park.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTION

The beautiful Mercy Center Chapel was the setting for the McAuley Chap-ter of the National Honor Society In-duction Ceremony which took place on Tuesday, April 30, 2009. The Mount Mercy Academy McAuley Chapter of the National Honor society is com-prised of students who do more than make the Honor Roll. Students must show outstanding performance in the areas of scholarship, service, leader-ship, and character to be considered for NHS. These criteria for selection form the foundation upon which the organization and its activities are built. The ceremony, attended by family and friends of the inductees, opened with a prayer, offered by MMA NHS member Senior Kaitlin Krug, followed by the introduction, explained by Meghan Mathewson and the history, by Christine Lauber. After a traditional ritual of the lighting of symbolic NHS candles, the presentation of candi-dates was announced by MMA Assis-tant Principal Mrs. Margaret Staszak and investiture of hoods presided by Principal Mrs. Paulette Gaske, and Dr. Karen Huffman, MMA Science Depart-ment faculty member. The keynote speaker for the evening was the sister of MMA Senior and NHS member Deborah Giermek, Ms. Jen Giermek, of the MMA Class of 1999, currently an optometrist in Brooklyn, N.Y. Ms. Giermek advised the induc-tees not to worry if they change their mind about their chosen course of study while in college. She proceeded to advise the students to follow the path they are most drawn to and they will find what it is they are meant to do in life. MMA Senior Meghan Mathewson offered closing remarks. A reception was held in the Academy Dining Hall following the ceremony.

Swine Flu Precaution:

Dear Parents,

This letter is to inform you that the State of New York has entered a heightened surveillance stage resulting from the presence of a swine flu virus that is making people sick in several states, including New York State, and also in Mexico. Although, to date, only mild illness has occurred in the United States, we realize that many people are worried and we hope this letter will help address your concerns. Despite confirmed cases of swine flu in a private school in Queens, New York City, we believe students can safely attend classes and schools will remain open at this time (with the exception of the school in Queens at which confirmed cases were discovered).

At this time, the state and local health departments have advised us that students can continue to come to school, as long as they are not sick and do not think they have flu symptoms. Flu-like symptoms include: fever (over 100 degrees F.), feverishness, cough, sore throat, runny nose, or stuffy nose. Additional symptoms may be experienced with swine flu, including muscle pain, fatigue, and sometimes vomiting or diarrhea. Flu spreads easily. If you suspect your child is getting the flu, it is important that he/she does not attend school or go anywhere else—such as group childcare, the mall, or sporting events—where other people would be exposed to flu germs. It is also important to teach your children how to reduce their risk of getting the flu and protect others from infection.

Teach your children to wash their hands often. Washing with soap and hot water for at least 20 seconds is ideal (that’s about as long as it takes to sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice).

Teach your children the proper use of hand sanitizer. Gels, rubs, and hand wipes all work well, as long as they contain at least 60% alcohol. Hand wipes must be disposed of properly. Always read and follow label instructions when using hand sanitizer.

Teach your children to keep their hands away from their face and avoid touching their mouth, nose, or eyes.

Teach your children to cover coughs and sneezes with tissues or by coughing into the inside of their elbow. Cough or sneeze into your sleeve—not your hands!

Help your children to learn these healthy habits by setting a good example and always doing them yourself.

If we all practice good hygiene, health officials believe we can limit the spread of swine flu in our school at this time. We are consulting with local health officials regarding best cleaning practices for infection control in our buildings.

While the current situation does not warrant school closure, if swine flu continues to spread and more students become ill, it may become neces-sary to close schools for a period of time. We are working with our School Nurse and County Health officials to monitor the situation here and will make all decisions in consultation with them and state officials. We will inform parents immediately if the situation changes and it becomes neces-sary to close schools.

If schools are closed, please do not make arrangements—such as sending children to a friend’s home or group childcare—that will put them in close contact with other children. It is important to plan ahead. Have a family discussion now to consider options in advance of the event of a school closing.

Please stay informed by paying attention to media reports. You may also get information at www.cdc.gov, www.nyhealth.gov, www.schoolhealthservicesny.com, or the 24 hour toll-free hotline that New Yorkers across the State can use to get answers to their questions. The hotline is 1-800-808-1987. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our children and our schools healthy.

Dear Senior,

This is a very exciting time in your life before you know it, graduation will be here! I’d like to take the opportunity to give you, as a departing senior, a few last minute health suggestions.

It might be a good time to discuss with your parents if you should change from pediatrics to adult medicine, as this is a good time to schedule an appointment with your physician for a college or pre-employment physical exam. You may need or want a tetanus/Pertussis booster, the meningococcal vaccine to provide protection against one form of meningitis. There is also a vaccine against Human Papilloma Virus, the major cause of cervical cancer in women. Discuss these with your parents and physician. Bring your up dated immuni-zation record to the health office, so that the vaccine dates can be recorded on your permanent health record and forward to your next academic endeavor.

This is a fun time of year with many celebrations. It is also a time of year when seniors can be reckless and may take risks they may not have taken before. Please keep these points tucked in the back of your mind as you celebrate your achievements. Motor vehicles of any sort must not be used recklessly. Cars are machines, and people are fragile. At this time of year we are always reminded of a senior who was accidentally killed in the parking lot by his friend when hopping on moving cars in the school parking lot. Wear seat belts! Keep your eyes on the road. Do not interfere with the driver. If you’re driving, keep both hands on the wheel and your attention on the road. Do not bend down to pick up something that falls. Do not rely on a passenger to make driving decisions for you. Let someone else an-swer/talk/reply to phone calls while driving. Celebrate unimpaired, and be high on life. Do not underestimate how impaired your judgment can become under the influence of even small amounts of alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, and other drugs. Call your parents, friends, or a taxi if you need a safe ride home. If you are a smoker, consider quitting. According to the CDC, within 20 minutes of quitting, your heart rate drops; 12 hours after quitting carbon monoxide levels in your blood drop to normal…be kind to your body. Most importantly of all, make room in your busy life for God. Best wishes, Nurse Kathy.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

If your daughter is going to be late to school or absent for the day please call the Attendance Office by 8:15AM. Please do not call the Main Office. The Attendance of-fice needs to know that she is safe and has your permis-sion to be absent or tardy. If she is late due to an appointment please have her bring in a slip from the doctor/dentist’s office. Most medical offices have form letters or slips that can be printed at the time of checkout. If she has an early dismissal for an appointment please write a note, accompanied by the appointment slip from the doctor’s office, and have your daughter bring it to the At-tendance Office, room 111, first thing in the morning. If you have made a last-minute appointment please call me to make early dismissal arrangements. Do not call your daughter’s cell phone or just show up to get her out of class. If she is absent please write an excuse stating her full name, date of absence and reason for the absence. If she has been seen by a doctor please have him/her write a script stating why and when she missed school, including any restrictions or special requests. A written excuse is required even if you have called to inform me that your daughter will be absent or tardy. Please feel free to copy and use the form to the right. It is a standard school excuse. I appreciate your cooperation concerning our attendance policy and the safety of your daughter(s). Please call if you have any questions or refer to your daughter’s agenda, pages 12 and 15. If you would like to get a copy of the “Home-To-School Note” please refer to my webpage: http://myteacherpages.com/webpages/jfruth

SENIOR PROM AND POST PROM

The MMA Senior Prom will be held at Kloc’s Grove on Friday, May 8, 2009 from 7-10:00 PM. This is a memorable event for our students and we want them to enjoy the evening and have a wonderful time. Parents, please understand that according to the New York State law and “Dram Shop Law”, parents sponsoring a party where under-aged persons have access to alcohol will be subjecting themselves to potential criminal and civil liability. We encourage you to create clear, consistent and no-use messages for your daughter concerning alcohol and other substances.

We are in need of help for the post-prom most especially at the time the event will run from 11:30 PM to 4:00 AM. If you can volunteer for all or any portion of the night it would be most greatly appreciated. The event is filled with interactive video games, prizes and fun for our students and their dates. It’s all to help keep our girls safe! Thanks for considering helping out that evening. Please contact the Main Office at 825-8796 X 201 for more information on how to help.
