Gibberagong Ms Hindmarsh, Pam and our Year 6 students enjoyed an overnight stay at Gibberagong Environmental Education Centre. Although it was quite wet for a lot of their trip, they still managed to fit in a night walk which was one of the highlight of the excursion for them.

Kid’s Night In Our very first Kid’s Night In was a hit with students and parents alike. Students had a fabulous time dancing at the disco, painting nails, colouring-in, watching movies and playing on technology. It was wonderful to also see through the P&C Facebook page that parents got together and enjoyed dinner and a night out whilst the Kid’s Night In was in full swing. The night raised $780 that will be used towards the purchase of Lego kits for students.

A very special thank you again to Robyn and Mitch Dykstra (RG Meats Brookvale) who once again donated and delivered the sausages to the school for this event. This gesture was greatly appreciated and is indicative of the generous and giving parent community we have here at MKPS.

Thank you to our dedicated staff I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and recognise all of the wonderful teaching staff, our office staff Pam and Barb, and our wonderful team of SLSO’s at MKPS. I am so proud and grateful to work with such a dedicated and collaborative team who work together to provide our students with opportunities beyond the classroom that help them grow and flourish, whilst creating memories that they will cherish forever. This term has seen staff give up their own time to support our Welcome BBQ, Zoo Snooze, Gibberagong overnight excursion, Parent Information Evening, Kid’s Night In and our upcoming extended staff meeting. My motto is ‘Good becomes GREAT when we work together as a team’ and we certainly do this well at MKPS.

New Principal Update The recruitment process for our new principal is in its final stages with interviews taking place this week. It was with a very heavy heart that I did not apply for the substantive principal position. As much as this has been such a fulfilling and inspiring experience for me to work in such a positive school environment with great students, staff and families, the travel time has taken me away from my own two beautiful children who are still young and need their mum around a bit more.

This being said I know the panel will do a wonderful job in choosing the right principal to take over and continue to lead the school in the positive directions planned for 2019 and beyond.

Library Update We are starting to see things come together for our new 21st century flexible learning space that is being created in our Library. The old furniture and computers have been removed, most of which was donated to other schools. Our storeroom and office have been re-organised with many dated and broken resources culled, with great help from Mrs Tudor who couldn’t leave it half-finished so came in on the weekend to finish it off. Our painting will start next week and we should take delivery of our new furniture and shelving in week 9. We are hoping to have an ‘Official Opening’ of our new learning space before the end of term.

Year 6 Leadership Camp – GibberagongIt was the 21st of February and we finally arrived at camp. It wasn’t the nicest of days, but our cheerfulness and excitement wasn’t going to keep us from having fun!! We started our great adventure of being a responsible and encouraging leader.

First, we had a variety of team challenges. The air was filled with laughter and excitement and a little bit of water too!!!

Then it was canoeing time! We jumped into our canoes and off we went down the Hawkesbury river. Struggles were everywhere we turned. Canoes stuck in the mangroves and canoes hitting other canoes. I think half of the river was filled with our laughter, frustration and lots of important leadership skills.

About an hour later we went down to the mud to catch some harmless crabs. Unfortunately for some people, instead of catching crabs they got stuck in the mud! But with some help from their friends they got out, phew! Then they jumped into the river to cool and clean off.

Thank you to our P&C We would like to thank the P&C who have kindly agreed to purchase 20 new iPads to support learning across K-2 with fundraising from our upcoming Mountain Festival. We look forward to getting these set up and sharing the wonderful learning opportunities that students can experience because of this wonderful investment by our P&C. We are very grateful for your support and all of the work you do to enhance the opportunities we can provide for our students.

Monitoring your child when they are online With recent media reports outlining some of the online dangers that children are unknowingly being exposed to through online apps, we thought it would be appropriate to share a timely reminder to monitor and check any apps that your children are using on their devices.

Excursion / Incursion Payments In implementing new processes in regards to payments students will not be able to attend or participate in extra-curricular activities that are offered without permission notes returned and payments made to the office or online prior to the due date.

Zoo SnoozeYear 3 and 4 had an “emusing” time at their Zoo Snooze overnight excursion in Week 4! The little showers of rain didn’t dampen our spirits as we listened to keeper talks, met some of the animal residents including a children’s python and a shingleback lizard and made echidna enrichments. We walked around the zoo after dark and watched some of the more nocturnal animals play and move around their enclosures. That night we enjoyed a movie before bed in the large circular theatre. The next morning we feasted on a big breakfast before spending the day walking around the zoo and enjoying the seal and bird shows. Thank you to all of our parents and carers who gave up their night and/or assisted in the supervision the following day!

Year 6 Leadership Camp (continued)

After dinner when the weather had finally cleared up, we went on our night walk. During our walk we saw some phenomenal things. We saw phosphorescence (which I’ve got to say was spectacular)! We also saw the crabs and what they do at night which was really cool!!!

The next day, our first activity was an early morning walk. On that walk we had to sit in the bush for 15 minutes. We weren’t allowed to talk, which was hard to do!

For our next activity we had to make a solar camp oven to melt a chocolate biscuit. We had a few different materials to make the oven. To win you had to have a smart design. While we were waiting for the biscuit to melt we went outside do another challenge. For this challenge there was a bucket in the middle with a large piece of string around it. To get the bucket, as a team we had to make plans. With these plans we had to use some string and a hook to grab the bucket safely to the outside of the other string. It was really hard at times but as teams, we came up with good plans to solve this tricky puzzle.

After that activity we did photography. For photography we had to take pictures of strange things around this certain part of the park. For the photos we had to use the rule of thirds, black and white, and good thinking skills. All of the pictures we took were amazing!!!

It was the time everyone was dreading. Camp was finally OVER…

A lot of us really hoped we could have stayed another night.

Thanks to this Gibberagong camp, we developed amazing leadership skills. We learned how to be a responsible and encouraging leader. This adventure was one of the greatest of adventures, and I was so glad we could spend it with other people our age.

KIDS NIGHT IN!!!K-2

The K-2 Kids Night In was a hit! The children got hot and sweaty at the disco dancing to songs like Baby Shark, The Macarena and The Hokey Pokey! Following the disco they enjoyed a sausage sandwich for dinner- YUM YUM! Students then choose between games and social play in the Kindergarten classroom or watching the movie Trolls in K/1W. Children enjoyed playing Snakes and Ladders, serving customers, cooking up a storm in the play kitchen, constructing marble runs, playing with the train set and engaging in creative drawing! It was so wonderful to see so many happy, smiling faces throughout the night!

3-6

We hope our parents and caregivers had a relaxing evening last Wednesday night during our Kids Night In. Staff and students had a wonderful time in the classrooms with movies, eating their sausage sandwiches and kicking their heels up during the disco. We raised an outstanding amount of $780.00 in fundraising and are already looking forward to the next event!

Stars of the Month

Positive EducationThis fortnight we looked at the school values of Resilience and Personal Best. Students had the opportunity to work through different scenarios and describe how they could demonstrate resilience or their personal best in each scenario. We have also seen and heard a lot of students demonstrating these skills. Have a look at the journals that Stage One filled out this week all about resilience. Don’t forget that you can find the lessons on the school website under ‘Learning at our School ➜ Positive Education’.

Jim Jam MusicOur students continue to be having a wonderful time participating in the Jim Jam Music program. We are so fortunate to have two very passionate and knowledgeable teachers in Jim Jam Carmel and Jim Jam Kylie. Their dedication to Music week after week is evident and not only are they upskilling both staff and students, they are also invested in building on our music resources. Jim Jam Kylie’s lovely husband Roger spent some time over the weekend to make strikers for our triangles. Thank you Roger!

Premier’s Reading Challenge This year MKPS are again participating in the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge from 4th March to 30th August 2019. The PRC encourages a love of reading for leisure and pleasure, and enables students to experience quality literature. The school supports the NSW Premier’s

Reading Challenge by stocking many of the titles on the list and by helping students to locate PRC books to read.

A note will be going home Thursday 7th March with more information about the PRC.

We would like to see students sign up for the challenge as reading is such wonderful skill to have and can give many hours of pleasure. Happy reading!

K/1W – Outdoor LearningThis week, K/1W have been taking their learning outside. We worked in groups to go on a hunt for different three-dimensional objects around the school. The students demonstrated excellent communication, collaboration and team work as they all contributed to each other’s learning. Outdoor learning is a focus at Mount Kuring-gai and it was great to see the students being active and highly engaged in their learning.
