MOUNT HARMON CELEBRATES NEW CAPITAL & PRESERVATION PROJECTS After several years of decline and boxwoods dying off, we are delighted to report that we have restored the boxwood garden and it looks wonderful. We were able to restore the boxwood garden lighting, add an irrigation system, and plant hybrids that will help the garden thrive into the future. Be sure to come and enjoy the boxwood garden this spring! Recent grant funding is also helping to add a new visitor orientation path, additional exterior lighting, and an exciting new project: the reconstruction of a colonial-era tobacco barn, to further showcase Mount Harmon’s agricultural and plantation history. Many thanks to the Chichester duPont and Crystal Trust Foundations for the generous funding to help make these important preservation projects possible. Many thanks also to David Farrow of Holly Hill Farms, and to K.C. Poore who were pivotal to the planning, design, and planting of the boxwood garden. Want to help preserve Mount Harmon history? PRESIDENT’S REPORT

“WHERE EAGLES FLY”Visitors to MHP are often lucky enough to witness the American Bald Eagle soaring above the Sassafras and nesting on its shores. The sight is quite amazing and a testament to the resurgence of the eagle population on the Chesapeake. As of April 2015, MHP members and guests can also enjoy the picnic area built by local Eagle Scout, Jared Schrader! The picnic site and fire pit are a fabulous addition to our nature trails and shoreline vis-tas!

Jared Schrader is no stranger to MHP. Jared lives with his mother and father (Kerry and Freddie) and sister (Courtney) on nearby “Wil-o-mar” Farm, a working dairy farm less than 1 mile from MHP as the “Eagle flies”. Jared is a junior at Bohemia Manor High School. Coinci-dentally, the mascot for Bohemia Manor High school is the “The Eagle”. Jared’s involvement in the community and school is nothing short of amazing. Jared’s list of projects and activities include, concert band, jazz band, marching band and all county band with his trumpet, Angelic Bells Hand bell choir at Zion Methodist Church, Cecil Sliders 4-H (club president, dairy heifer projects, MD state 4-H delegate), vacation bible school volun-teer, Cecilton Backup Ministry feeding local students with weekend hunger risk, 2 time Ben Carson Scholas-tic Scholar recipient, and various other volunteer and leadership activities in school, Scouts, church, 4-H and community. As you can see, Jared has definitely spread his wings and soared!

Scouting has always been a big part of Jared’s life. Jared joined Cub Pack 340 in Cecilton at age 7. Jared eventu-ally joined Troop 902 in Bear when the local Scout troop in Cecilton dismantled due to low attendance. Through the years, Jared and his scouting ventures often includ-ed MHP. Jared’s local Troop has assisted with several Re-enactments at MHP helping with people transport, trash removal and parking. Jared’s Scout Troop has also enjoyed several camping trips to MHP including, “Sur-vivor Sassafras”, an adventure camping event. Jared has gained many life skills through scouting. Camping, out-door survival, first aid and leadership are several of the valuable lessons learned from Jared’s Scouting career.

Jared’s desire to pursue the rank of Eagle in scouting was an ambitious one. Through inspiration from other Eagle Scouts and self-motivation, Jared’s Eagle Scout journey was well planned out. The requirements for Eagle Scout must be completed by the age of 18. This requirement is sometimes not met by scouts in pursuit of Eagle. Jared made sure that his path to Eagle Scout was timely and achievable. The Eagle Scout rank requires an “Eagle Project”. The project consists of many aspects that chal-lenge the leadership, planning, implementation, design and management skills of the Scout. With Jared’s con-nection to MHP and his love for the outdoors, a picnic site on the banks of the Sassafras was a perfect match! Jared directed a group of 30 Volunteers in the planning, design, building, transportation and installation of the fire pit, picnic tables and benches at the new picnic site!

In early December 2015, Jared and his fellow Earlev-ille scouting friend, Jonathan Huey, were inducted into Scouting’s most prestigious rank of “Eagle” in a “dual ceremony.” Sadly, Jonathan Huey’s mother, Mary Beth Huey passed away days before the ceremony follow-ing a courageous battle with cancer. The ceremony was organized by Mary Beth before her passing and went on as planned, with full support from both Johnathan and Jared. MHP is proud to be a part of Jared Schrader’s Eagle Scout experience. The new picnic area is open to members and guests of MHP. Pack your picnic and en-joy the natural beauty of MHP this season! Who knows, you might catch a glimpse of our “Soaring Eagles”!!

On a sad note, we will miss Cathy Dill, who passed away last fall after a fight with cancer, and who served as a valued FOMH Board Member. Cathy was instrumental in helping to start the Earth Day 5K and for bringing corporate support to Mount Harmon. We will be plant-ing a dogwood and having a memorial service in her honor at our Earth Day 5K April 23. We are so thankful for supporters like Cathy, and for all of you who give so generously to support Mount Harmon.~ Stephen W. Isaacson, President FOMH Board of Directors

President’s Report Mount Harmon welcomes spring with the plantation bursting into bloom and activity. This year promises to be exciting, educational, and fun-filled. We have a great line-up of special events and programs to showcase Mount Harmon’s nature and history as never before. We are hosting the Grand Opening of our Education & Discovery Center, May 1; Colonial Picnic, June 5; Lotus Blossom Festival, July 30; National Revolutionary War Reenactment Festival, September 24 & 25; Bull & Oyster Roast, October 15; and Yuletide Manor House Tour, December 3 & 4. The Washington College Field School of Archaeology returns this spring, and we continue to host a growing number of school groups, special tours, and weddings. As an official site on the John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail, we are building on our connection with the Chesapeake Bay and telling the story of Mount Harmon over the centuries. Be sure to stop in and see our new Mount Harmon Highlight in History Exhibit – showcasing four centuries of Mount Harmon history (see pg. 5 for exhibit excerpt).

Beginning in May, Washington College will conduct its 2nd six week Field Study Program in Archeology at Mount Harmon. This exciting partnership will help us better understand Mount Harmon’s history and importance as a cultural landscape, and provide new educational and interpretive opportunities to benefit our visitors. On a sad note, we say a heartfelt goodbye to the late Phyllis Drupieski, retired FOMH site coordinator, who lost her struggle with cancer in March. Phyllis will long be remembered for her dedication and enthusiasm for Mount Harmon. A memorial fund has been created in honor of Phyllis, with a fitting memorial to be unveiled at the Lotus Blossom Festival. Many thanks to those of you who have given to the Memorial Fund, your gifts will create an enduring legacy in honor of Phyllis. And finally, please join me in welcoming two new staff members to Mount Harmon, our new site coordinator Debbie Brown, and new site manager Gary Biscoe. Debbie has coordinated tours and managed the office since last season, and is a great addition to the Mount Harmon team. We say a fond farewell and thank you to Chris Price, for his work
