Pilot Programs• Pilot Program

– Next big step toward our August 2015 one-to-one implementation!

– Pilot program will begin in August 2014 in predetermined courses within the junior and senior curriculum

– Participation in the program is optional. Instruction will not be compromised for students who choose not to participate

Changes to SAT

• Will affect Class of 2017 and future years • The classes of 2015 and 2016 will

take the SAT as it is right now• The College Board will introduce

the new PSAT in October 2015 and the new SAT in spring 2016

Important Features• Essay will now be optional • Scoring will be based on 1600 point scale (800 for

Evidence Based Reading & Writing, 800 for Math). [Optional essay will receive a separate score.]

• The ¼ point penalty for wrong answers will be eliminated.

• Score will be based on the total number of questions answered correctly.

• New SAT will be three hours in length, three hours and 50 minutes with optional essay

• Each multiple-choice question will have four choices rather than the five current options

• Will be available to take on paper and on the computer

Essay• Will be optional, based on analysis rather than

opinion• Time to write the essay will increase from 25

minutes currently to 50 minutes with the new SAT• Currently, essay focuses more on testing writing

skills - students are asked to take a position on a presented issue

• New essay will hope to test reading, analysis and writing skills

• Will be asked to produce a written analysis of a provided text source

• Colleges will determine whether they will require the essay for admissions

Reading & Writing

• Current Critical Reading Section has two types of questions (sentence-completion and passage-based questions)

• New SAT will focus on more evidence-based reading and writing

• No sentence completions• Focus on real world vocabulary,

eliminating obscure vocabulary• Greater emphasis vocabulary in context

• Focus on revising and editing writing in passages

• Focus on analyzing Literature, Social Studies, and Sciences passage

• One passage will be a primary source from American and/or World History such as The Constitution or Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address

Math• New SAT will focus on three major

topics: 1. Problem solving and data analysis, 2. “The heart of Algebra”3. “Passport to advanced Math”

• Real-world problem-solving including analyzing data, charts and graphs

• Calculators will not be allowed on all the Math sections
