The 275 Conference, along with the Platte Valley Confer-ence (PVC), have been discuss-ing how the changes to North-west Missouri would affect the activities associated with their students. Over one month ago, with the changes to the Grand River Conference, conversations began with the PVC and the 275 conferences.
The 275 Conference met on Monday, Feb. 23, to discuss the possibility of the PVC coming into the 275 Conference in all ac-tivities. On Monday, March 30,

the 275 Conference approved, 8-0, for the invitation to take place. On Wednesday, April 1, the Platte Valley Conference met and decided, 7-0, that the inte-gration should take place. The PVC schools will now take this information back to their per-spective Boards of Education for discussion. The administra-tors have tentatively set Thurs-day, April 9, as the first meeting to form individual activity com-mittees and a constitution com-mittee.

two years and Rinney L. Law was elected to the Alderman-at-Large Position 2 for two years. Saman-tha Grist received 68 votes and Rebecca Monroe received 63 votes to win three-year terms on the Craig R-3 Board of Educa-tion. Michael Peters received 50 votes. Keith L. Knaak ran unop-posed for the unexpired two-year term on the school board.

In the South Holt R-1 School District race, Jason Kurtz re-ceived 351 votes and Jim Kelly received 298 votes to win three-year seats on the Board of Edu-cation. Brian Williams received 205 votes in the race.

The Nodaway-Holt R-7 School District had a non-election, with Robert Saxton and Kenneth Shewey winning three-year terms on the Board of Education.

Mike Long of Long Construction in Mound City - Sits proudly in his bulldozer while working on terraces for a local farmer. Long returned to the cab of the bulldozer a month ago after suffering an injury last year that left him paralyzed from the waist down.
Mike Long of Mound City - Swings away from his bulldozer and into his hand-modified pickup by way of his Life Essentials’ hydraulic chair lift. The lift reaches into the cab of the bulldoz-ers and hand-modified tractors used by Mike in his Long Con-struction business.
He wants to be a “friend a friend would like to have”Since that fateful day one year
ago on Tuesday, April 1, 2014, Mike Long of Mound City has fought his way back to the abil-ity to “play in the dirt.” A tragic fall from a high loader last year left Mike with paralysis of his legs.
After spending one week at the University of Kansas Medi-cal Center following the acci-dent, Mike was moved to the Madonna Rehabilitation Center in Lincoln, NE. Mike credits Madonna Rehab with preparing him to come home and resume as normal a life as possible. Mike came home the first of June and was back to work by July, three months after the ac-cident.
For the past eight months, Mike has used his all-terrain wheelchair to get him into the skid loaders, allowing him to get back to work. He has three employees that do his leg work and help run the equipment. Bradley Wilson of Oregon, MO, and Rick and Jase Maley of For-est City, MO, work with Mike, with someone always with him.
Recently, Mike qualified through Vocational Rehabili-tation to get a hydraulic chair lift mounted to the flatbed of a pickup. Vocational Rehabilita-tion also paid for the all-terrain
wheelchair that Mike has had for almost a year.
The chair lift, made by Life Essentials, is a unique lift made in only one place in the country. The inventor of the chair is from Brookfield, IN, and is paralyzed from polio. The uniqueness of the lift is its ability to swing out and turn on a hinge, allowing more maneuverability. Mike’s lift takes him from the driv-er’s seat of his hand-modified pickup and sets him into the seat of his bulldozer or tractor, traveling right into the cab. The remote is controlled by Mike, enabling him to place it back into position.
About one month ago, Mike got back into a bulldozer for the first time since the acci-dent. Since bulldozer and skid loader controls are already hand driven, no modifications were necessary; however, the tractors used in his business, Long Construction, needed changes made. Now, with the new chair lift, Mike can also get into the tractors.
Mike reflects that this past year has definitely had its ups and downs. He credits his family with helping him make it through the hard times. For the past year, Mike has made
countless trips to the doctor and is still going to physical therapy for upper body strength and car-diovascular fitness.
Mike remarked that a Tim McGraw song, Live Like You Are Dying, spoke volumes to him. It is a song about a man in his “early 40’s with a lot of life before me, when a mo-ment came that stopped me on a
dime.” Mike, too, has learned to “love deeper and talk sweeter” and hopes to “become a friend a friend would like to have.”
With his wife, Michelle, and his children, Colton, 16, and Kealee, 2 1/2, by his side, he takes life day to day. There are days that he gets down. That is when he climbs into a piece of
Voter turnout down, most elected positions run unopposed
Running unopposed was Lou-is Byford, elected to the position of Clerk/Treasurer for a two-year term in the village of Corning, MO, and Michael Selleck, Jr., elected as a Board Member of the village of Fortescue, MO, for a two-year term.
In other non-election races, the Public Water Supply District #1 of Holt County Sub-District #4 seat was filled by Bradley Kurtz for three years and Sub-District #5 seat was filled by John Dan-iel for three years; Dennis Saun-ders filled the three-year term on the Bigelow Independent Road District; Russel Grundel will sit on the Corning Special Road District for another three years; Travis Panning will fill the three-year term on the Fortescue Spe-cial Road District; and Ronnie Haer will fill the Atchison-Holt Ambulance District Sub-district #4 seat for a three-year term.
The four area fire districts filled six-year term seats with non-elections: Cliff Robbins on Mound City Rural Fire District; Rhonda Hunziger on Northwest Holt Fire Protection District; Leslie (Les) Linville on Skid-more Fire Protection District; and Larry Cotton on Southern Fire Protection District.
Four municipalities put the non-election question on the bal-lot. Oregon, Big Lake, Bigelow and Corning passed the non-election question.
Voter turnout county wide was 24.49% which turns out to be 670 total cards cast out of a pos-sible 2,736. Oregon saw 35.5% turnout while Mound City saw less than 5%. This was expected due to the issues and elections on the ballot for each area.
These results are unnofficial until verified at the verification board hearing on Friday, April 10.

his machinery and moves dirt. It always seems to pick up his spirits.
Mike would like to diversify and bring some of his business into the shop. The plans are there, but he hasn’t moved for-ward yet. Until then, if anyone is looking for Mike, he can be found “playing in the dirt.”

Mound City Spring clean-upon Sunday, April 26
State Treasurer Clint Zweifel recently announced that residents in Holt County have approxi-mately $200,000 of Unclaimed Property waiting to be claimed in more than 2,700 accounts. Mis-sourians can check to see if they have Unclaimed Property online at ShowMeMoney.com.

The city of Mound City is holding a Spring clean-up day on Sunday, April 26, from 1-3 p.m. for Mound City residents and property owners only. Trucks will be at the Mound City Swim-ming Pool parking lot to receive the items. There is a limit of one loaded pickup, trailer or vehicle per household. No items from commercial businesses will be accepted.
Acceptable items for disposal include furniture, televisions, trash, appliances, iron, scrap metal and batteries. The following items will not be accepted: lumber, paint, chemicals and tires.
Proof of Mound City residency or property ownership is re-quired. Bring identification with a street address, a vehicle with a city sticker, a water bill with the service address or a property tax receipt. Do not assume that individuals in charge will know who the resident is or where they live.
The resident will be responsible for unloading the vehicle at the dump site. Individuals in charge at the site are only there to give directions and monitor what is being disposed.
The tree dump site at the south end of town will also be open during the clean-up time for disposal of yard waste.
surer Zweifel said. “Since tak-ing office I have significantly streamlined the claims process, cutting wait times in half and allowing many account owners to complete the process entirely online. I encourage everyone in Holt County to search for their property on my website, Show-MeMoney.com.”
Treasurer Zweifel currently protects more than $822 million in unclaimed assets for 4.8 mil-lion account owners. Unclaimed Property can belong to individu-als, businesses, nonprofits or any entity that conducts finan-cial transactions. It can come from abandoned bank accounts, uncollected insurance policies, uncashed checks and more. State law requires those entities to turn

News from Tiffany HeightsAnother month has passed and residents
at Tiffany Heights in Mound City prepared for April showers during the afternoon on Monday, March 30, by playing cards.
On Tuesday morning, Bible study was conducted by Pastor Paul Grant. During the afternoon, the therapy department provided a therapy fun session, conducted by Shan-non Tharp, Occupational Therapist. The residents got a chance to participate in the Sweet Sixteen Challenge. They used a floor basketball net and everyone got a chance to play horse. The elimination bracket pro-ceeded to the fabulous four and then the fi-nal round of the tournament was a face-off between Velma Kunkel and Lillian Brickey. The crowned winner was Velma Kunkel.
On Wednesday morning, the Holt Coun-ty Head Start children visited. They sang a song for the residents and greeted every-one. They were then treated to an Easter egg hunt. The residents had prepared the
eggs and enjoyed watching from the win-dow. There were 17 children who attended. During the afternoon, it was a fool’s game as residents enjoyed learning about this fun occasion. They played a game of guessing if the joke was real or not. The top 10 hoax-es were read. Some of them seemed too outrageous to be real, but they were. They then discussed idioms and read several of them and where they originated.
Dee Ann Heck provided piano before bingo on Thursday morning. Bingo volun-teers during the afternoon were Chris Beal, Shirley Jackson, Gordon Robbins, Jean McCall and Lucille Stull. Winners of the game were Betty Elder, Dolores Hawkins and Dorothy Sommer.
Barbara Hanlon assisted with glamour nails on Friday morning. Also during the morning, the residents enjoyed playing the egg game, which consisted of trying to gather the paper eggs with a pole and mag-
net. The first round consisted of how many they could get and the second round was totaled by the numbers on each egg. Resi-dents added a couple of bunnies to the round to make them more interesting. The win-ners of this game were Lois Woods, Lucille Stull, Virginia Beal and Dolores Hawkins. In the afternoon, the residents enjoyed a Holy Week game. They played Holy Bible jingo. All the questions were about stories from the Bible. The winners of these games were Margaret Voltmer, Inez VanOrman, Twyla Haer, Dolores Hawkins and Jeane Crouse. Games of choice were encouraged on Saturday afternoon.
Seth Henson provided Easter Sunday morning services. Afternoon church was conducted by the First Christian Church. Residents received Easter baskets from the New Liberty Baptist Church and really en-joyed them.
Mound City R-2 and South Holt R-1 proms to be April 11The Mound City R-2 Junior/Senior
Prom will be held on Satuday, April 11. The junior class selected “Under the Sea” for the theme. The doors to the school’s gymnasium will open at 4:30 p.m. for those attending the prom to gather for pictures. The general public is welcome to take photos at this time. The buses will load at 5:30 p.m. and travel to Mound City’s Tiffany Heights Care Center for the traditional promenade around the dining hall for the residents.
The senior class, faculty and guests will be treated to a beautiful prom by the ju-nior class at the Millennium Youth Church at the Word of Life Church in St. Joseph, MO. Dinner, entertainment and dancing
will be topped off with the crowning of the Prom King and Prom Queen from the senior class.
After Prom activities will be held at the Sky Zone in Kansas City, KS. Sky Zone is an indoor trampoline park that includes Open Jump, a SkySlam basketball court, Ultimate Dodgeball and much more. The worn out group will then head back to Mound City, with a return time of approxi-mately 5 a.m.
South Holt R-1 is also having its Ju-nior/Senior Prom on Saturday, April 11. The theme for the evening is “The En-chanted Forest.” Pictures can be taken of the prom attendees from 4:45-5:15 p.m. in the school’s gymnasium. The group will
promenade to the buses at 5:15 with depar-ture to Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, MO, at 5:30 p.m. After the prom activities of dinner, entertainment and dancing, the attendees will return to the South Holt school for After Prom.
The parents of the juniors and seniors have great games and food planned for the party. Inflated wrecking ball and joust-ing stations should be big hits, as well as the YouTube famous Hungry, Hungry Hippo game played on scooters. Pizzas, hot wings and more will feed the hungry masses. At 4 a.m., a hypnotist is coming to put on a show. The After Prom will con-clude at 5 a.m.
over assets to Treasurer Zwe-ifel’s office after a statutorily defined period of time, generally five years. The assets are held by the office in perpetuity until the original owners or a proper heir is located.
All Unclaimed Property is returned free of charge. One in 10 Missourians has Unclaimed Property, and the average return is $300.
Saturday and Sunday, April 11 and 12, marks the state-wide youth spring turkey hunting season. The 2015 youth season is just one week before the start of the regular spring turkey hunting season, April 20-May 10. Youth, ages 6-15, can hunt from 30 min-utes before sunrise to sunset, Central Daylight Time. Shoot-ing times for Holt County on April 11 are 6:19 a.m. until 7:55 p.m., and April 12 shoot-ing times are 6:18 a.m. until 7:56 p.m.
Youth hunters in Missouri must possess one of the fol-lowing three permits: Resi-dent Spring Turkey Hunting Permit, Resident Landowner Spring Turkey Hunting Per-mit or a Nonresident Spring Turkey Hunting Permit. Youth during this season are limited to one male turkey or turkey with a visible beard. If a youth takes a turkey during the youth portion, the youth is NOT allowed to harvest a sec-ond bird until April 27. This is because the bird taken during the youth season counts as the first bird for the first week of the regular season.
If a youth is interested in hunting turkeys during any
portion of the spring turkey hunt-ing season, they must be in the immediate presence of a properly licensed adult, someone 18 years or older. This adult would be considered a mentor and would need to have a turkey permit and Hunter Education Certification if born on or after January 1, 1967. Mentors born before this date are exempt from Hunter Educa-tion. Youth aged 11-15 may hunt alone if they have received and passed Hunter Education Certi-fication.
Youth spring turkey hunting season coming upThe Missouri Department of
Conservation (MDC) wants to encourage hunters to be mentors and to teach youth responsible and ethical hunting techniques. MDC also encourages this by reducing the price in Youth Resident and Youth Nonresident Spring Turkey Hunting Permits to half-price, just $8.50. Youth may also qualify for Resident Landowner Spring Turkey Hunt-ing Permits that are only valid on the land the permits were issued.
Last year’s turkey hatch was
fair and should provide ample opportunities for hunters to at least see birds; however, with the fair turkey numbers, hunters are encouraged to do a little scouting before this year’s turkey season.
The April 11-12 youth season should turn out to be a great sea-son. If any youth experiences a great hunt and would like to share a photo of their first turkey or big gobbler, in the Mound City News or any other publication, contact Conservation Agent Maupin for details at 660-254-6550.

Just consider a few things this spring while mushroom hunting. Since the weather has started to turn and the ground is catching up on moisture, morels will be popping out of the ground very soon, if they haven’t already done so.
Outdoorsmen have reported ticks are already out, so consider treating clothing with permanone or use other skin safe products to help limit exposure to ticks and chiggers. Another trick to slow-ing the exposure to ticks is to wear knee boots so that pants can be tucked inside the boots. This will at least slow the critters’ progres-sion to the skin. As research continues on tick borne illnesses, it is important to take a few precautions to limit exposure because these illnesses have become more prevalent.
Morel hunting seems to peak during the turkey season. This means increased traffic in the woods. Besides the obvious precau-tions taken by hunters, be 100% sure of the turkey target before pulling the trigger. Mushroom hunters can also do a few things to help. First, avoid wearing dark colors like blacks and browns, and most definitely avoid wearing reds, blues and whites. These are the colors of turkeys. Secondly, consider going into the woods after 1 p.m. This is after the legal hunting time for turkey hunters, so hunting traffic in the woods should slow down. If one must take off after that mushroom spot in the morning, consider wearing hunter orange. Lastly, whether or not that secret mushroom spot is on pub-lic ground or private ground…keep it a secret!

From the Mound City News archives
• The City of Mound City, Mound City Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club and Kiwanis Club had been working jointly on a project which would provide a new shelter house in the recreation area. Such a structure was badly needed during the Fourth of July celebration, and many fam-ily reunions and other gatherings would use its facilities almost daily. It was practically assured, but construction cost of the 60x30 building ex-ceeded slightly the donations that had been re-ceived. About $1,000 was needed yet to allow the new building to be debt-free. Donations to date exceeded $2,900.
• Three Mound City students earning the F.F.A. State Farmer Degree were: Joseph William Derr, Harvey Haynes, and LeRoyce Derr. Craig stu-dent Larry Russell earned his degree as well.
• Mrs. J.L. Lehmer of Mound City was named chairman of the Easter Lily Crippled Children’s Society for the Mound City district.
• A community survey of home accidents was a special safety project for boys and girls taking part in the Junior Fire Marshal program.
• Chris and Linda Boultinghouse were the new owners of the Mound City News-Independent, buy-ing it from longtime publisher Roy Sims, Jr. Roy had been publisher of the News-Independent since 1959. News-Independent employees at the time of the sale were Albert M. Tebbe, Larry Sims, Diana Moyers, Cheryl Miles, Sue Horvath, and Annette Thomas.
• Mound City’s Dr. J.B. McRae was on the cover of the first issue of “Missouri Community”, a new magazine published by the Missouri Rural Innovation Institute. “Mound City, Red Rocks & Doc McRae” was the cover story.
• John Zeliff was named superintendent of the Nodaway-Holt R-VII School District, replacing Don Neidt, who moved to Osceola, MO.

A ribbon cutting was held - By the Maryville, MO, Chamber of Commerce at the new Cornerstones of Care Healthy Families’ Resource Development Center at 1212-B South Main Street in Maryville on Wednesday, April 1. The center will continue Healthy Families’ mission of finding loving foster care and adoptive homes for children in need throughout northwest Missouri. (Photo By Megan McAdams)
Cornerstones of Care has provided a broad array of services to children and families in northwest Missouri for years. Headquartered in Kansas City, MO, its Healthy Families Programs is the leading provider of child and family support programs including foster care and adoption services in 30 counties in north-west Missouri. Healthy Families is looking to better serve the area with the opening of its Resource Development Center at 1212-B South Main Street in Maryville, MO.
An open house was held at the center on Wednesday, April 1, from 4 to 6 p.m. The Maryville Chamber of Commerce held a rib-bon cutting at 4 p.m. Leadership comments and a presentation of a proclamation by May-or Renee Reidel followed.
Including Healthy Families, Cornerstones’ family of agencies - Gillis, Ozanam, Spof-ford and Marillac, all organizations with long histories of service to the community - came together more than 16 years ago to better serve communities. Together, they provide a spectrum of 38 quality preventive, treatment and support services for children and their families.
Since 2005, Cornerstones has provided Foster Care Case Management and Adoption Services for over 450 abused and neglected children each year in five northwest Missouri counties. In 2014, Healthy Families imple-mented a two-year contract from the State of Missouri to increase the number of foster and adoptive homes by recruiting, training, li-censing and supporting resource homes in the 30-county northwest Missouri area, including the Fourth Judicial Circuit of Atchison, Gen-try, Holt, Nodaway and Worth counties. By working closely with communities in north-west Missouri, 571 new foster homes were licensed in the first year. However, 1,214 chil-dren were removed from their parents’ cus-tody in the area due to abuse and/or neglect, including 39 in the Fourth Judicial Circuit. Cornerstones prefers to minimize the disrup-tion in children’s lives when they are taken into custody, striving to place them in foster homes in or near their home communities.
“The establishment of the Maryville Re-source Development Center leverages long standing relationships Cornerstones has had with the community,” said Cornerstones Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer Ryan Dowis. “It is already helping us optimize our impact to better serve children and families in northwest Missouri. This is a caring and giv-ing community and we look forward to part-nering broadly and deeply to help.” Dowis also observes that the site of the center at Community Services, Inc., is a great location as the two organizations share a vision and mission of serving the five-county region.
The center is staffed by the Manager of Re-source Development, Valyn McClellan, who worked in human services in Maryville before joining Cornerstones and is a native of Grant City, MO. Family Development Specialist, Tracy Jones, is a native of Tarkio, MO, and has lived and worked in human services in Maryville for nearly 20 years. Roxie Maggert is also a family development specialist work-ing out of the Maryville office, providing ser-vices in Andrew and Buchanan counties.
Dowis himself is a native of the area, hav-ing grown up in Tarkio, and graduated from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville. He worked in Tarkio for Youth Services International Inc. and the Missouri Division of Family Services in Mound City, MO, and Maryville before joining Corner-stones in 2002.
Another tie to the local community is Amy (McAdams) Sielaff, who grew up in Tarkio. She works within the Healthy Families pro-gram with Cornerstones as a Director of Fam-ily/Youth Support Services.
One example of the impact Cornerstones is starting to have in the area is its leadership in developing HelpMeConnect.org, an online directory of resources being piloted in the Fourth Judicial Circuit. By clicking on a title or keyword for the type of resources being sought - from child care to utilities - families will be directed to the name, address, phone number and website of agencies where they are located that may be able to help them. HelpMeConnect .org was unveiled at the open house. Dowis said, “Through our part-nership with the Missouri Career Center in Maryville, we learned of the need for a more comprehensive di-rectory and we had some past experi-ence in this area; so we developed a technology solution that can hopefully help to meet the needs of the com-munity. Our goal is to be a resource in the community and fill any gaps that may exist.”
“The idea for a resource directory came about because we need to have up-
to-date resources for our clients,” said Kim Mildward, functional leader of the Missouri Career Center in Maryville. “Several of our partner agencies were having trouble finding resources as well, so we decided to come to-gether to develop an online directory for the five-county region. We just needed a way to make sure everyone could be up-to-date on the resources for the general public, employ-ers and social service agencies that are as-sisting people to overcome different types of barriers.”
Cornerstones intends to introduce services to the area from across its family of agencies to fill community needs. Give What You’ve Got, Cornerstones’ in-kind donation program that provides resources to children and fami-lies, will be replicated in Maryville. Corner-stones is also examining placement of some of its outpatient therapy services in the region. “Our goal is really to listen to the community and hear what needs may exist, then to look and see if there are other services we provide that may be valuable for us to bring to the community,” said Dowis.
April 1 was also the first day of Child Abuse Prevention Awareness Month. People interested in showing support can donate dia-pers, books, developmental toys, and hygiene products for Give What You’ve Got.

Jackie Spainhower, Director NWMo Regional Council of Governments, appeared before the commission to discuss the resolutions necessary to move forward with establishing an Enhanced Enterprise Zone (EEZ) in Holt County. Spain-hower reported that Maitland, MO, and Craig, MO, have passed the required resolu-tions. Commissioners Sither-wood and Carroll agreed to contact the remaining com-munities of Bigelow, MO, and Corning, MO. The next step in the process is a public hearing. Commissioners tabled setting the date of the hearing until all communities have been con-tacted.
Roger Waltemath, Profes-sional Engineer (PE), Veentra and Kimm, approached the commission to provide con-tract documents for the com-missioners to sign to begin the process of Bridge Replace-ment Off-Systems (BRO-32) on Bridge #0550012 on Holt 110. Veenstra and Kimm have been selected by the county
commission from a list of pre-qualified engineering firms to complete the design for later construction of the bridge. Commissioner Carroll made a motion to approve the contracts and enter into agreement with Veenstra and Kimm for the project. Commissioner Gordon seconded the motion. The mo-tion passed.

Holt County Prosecuting At-torney Robert Shepherd, As-sessor LaDonna Jones and Col-lector Donna Cotton joined the commission to review the cur-rent status of a State Tax Com-mission appeal of protested tax-es related to Golden Triangle Energy (GTE), LLC, Craig. Mr. Shepherd reported a settlement has been offered from GTE that would allow the parties to avoid another hearing later in the year and further allow the distribution of escrowed funds held by the collector. After dis-cussion, Mr. Shepherd agreed to contact the State Tax Com-mission and GTE’s attorney in an attempt to settle the matter at the offered settlement valuation of $22,000,000.
Commissioners took up the matter of Holt Road 104 in the Corning Special Road District. It has come to the attention of the commission that this field access road does not have right-of-way established and is not maintained by Corning Special Road District and is historically not a road, but was named as such. Commissioners reviewed a letter to Russel Grundel of the district requesting permission to vacate the road name and correct its listing in future plat books and maps.
Commissioners discussed a roadway agreement with Kansas City Power and Light (KCP&L)and agreed to direct R.T. Turner of KCP&L to the
South Union Road District for additional information related to any construction within its Special Road District. Com-missioners previously entered into a roadway agreement with KCP&L requiring a $50,000.00 bond and assurances that road-ways will be repaired should any damage occur during the construction of a 345kV trans-mission line across the county.
Treasurer Gay Quick met with the commission to report a ½ cent sales tax for General Revenue will expire on June 30, 2015. As a renewal ques-tion is not on the April ballot, a special election for renewal will be needed to ensure the county can collect the tax. County Clerk Kathy J. Holstine noted the matter can be placed on a Special Election August 4, since the legislature has re-moved June as an available election day.
Road and Bridge Supervisor Daryl Biermann reported on patch rock application on vari-ous roads around the county. He also noted that road grad-ing is underway, weather per-mitting. Commissioners hired Larry Helfers as a temporary, seasonal employee working primarily at grading roadways. Mr. Helfers also works for Sheriff Scott Wedlock in a part-time, as needed capacity. Af-ter discussion, Commissioner Carroll made a motion to hire Mr. Helfers at $12.00 per hour. The motion was seconded and passed.

The South Holt R-1 senior class - Has been holding a t-shirt quilt raffle throughout the year. All money raised from the raffle will go toward the senior class trip. South Holt has a total of ten seniors, so the class has had to be creative with money-making projects. Robin Holmes, the aunt of one of the students, designed and made the t-shirt quilt, depicting many facets of student life in South Holt. The drawing for the t-shirt will be on Friday, May 8, at the senior class breakfast. For more information about purchasing raffle tickets, contact Debby Dougherty at 660-446-2625.

Deborah Sweaney’s newest book is coming to town
Several years ago, Debo-rah Sweaney of Carlisle, PA, wrote a book about her parents, Dr. Frank and Iris Sweaney, and Holt County in the 1950’s, titled Unpacking Memories. With the proceeds from that book, the Iris and Frank Sweaney Fund was es-tablished, offering a scholar-ship to Holt County students for further education after high school. This year will mark the third year high school seniors have been selected to receive a scholarship from the fund.
While reviewing the schol-arship applications from South Holt, Nodaway-Holt, Mound City and Craig, Sweaney be-gan thinking about her years in high school at South Holt. Her 1970 class was the first high school class to attend all four years at the newly con-solidated South Holt School; however, her older sister, Lou Ann, was a senior the year the Forest City, MO, Bobcats and the Oregon, MO, Pirates be-came the South Holt Knights. Sweaney became curious about the merger between For-est City and Oregon. Out of this curiosity, a new book was born.
Up in the Air tells of Holt County in the years of 1965-1968, which was a time of great change for Holt Coun-ty as well as America. It is based on research in primary sources: the Holt County Sen-tinel, the Mound City News-Independent, the St. Joseph
News-Press and material from the Missouri State Archives. Up in the Air features stories of the burning of the old Holt County Courthouse, the school merger fights in both the southern and northern ends of the county and the first year of South Holt. There is history, politics and a fun story
of a great basketball team.Sweaney will be holding a
book signing event at the Holt County Museum and Research Center in Oregon on Sunday, April 19, at 2 p.m. Proceeds from the sale of Up in the Air are earmarked for the Iris and Frank Sweaney Scholarship Fund.
The Executive Director for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) in Holt County, Corey Lesher, reminds foreign persons with an interest in agricultural lands in the United States that they are required to report any holdings and any transactions to the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture.
"Any foreign person who ac-quires, transfers or holds any interest, other than a security in-terest, including leaseholds of 10 years or more, in agricultural land in the United States is required by law to report the transaction no later than 90 days after the date of the transaction," said Lesher.
Foreign investors must file Ag-
Foreign persons must report U.S. agricultural land holdings
ricultural Foreign Investment Disclosure Act (AFIDA) reports with the FSA county office that maintains reports for the county where the land is located.
“Failure to file a report, filing a late report or filing an inaccu-rate report can result in a pen-alty with fines up to 25 percent of the fair market value of the agricultural land,” said Lesher.
For AFIDA purposes, agri-cultural land is defined as any land used for farming, ranch-ing or timber production, if the tracts total 10 acres or more.
Disclosure reports are also re-quired when there are changes in land use. For example, re-ports are required when land use changes from non-agri-cultural to agricultural or from agricultural to non-agricultural. Foreign investors must also file a report when there is a change in the status of ownership such as the owner changes from for-eign to non-foreign, from non-foreign to foreign or from for-eign to foreign.
Data gained from these dis-closures is used to prepare an annual report to the President and Congress concerning the ef-fect of such holdings upon fam-ily farms and rural communities in the United States.

First Lego League debuts with robotic demonstrations
Eli Caton, one of the Dominat-ing Master Builders - Prepares his Lego robot before launching the programmed task on the Robot Game field of missions at the First Lego League demon-strations on Wednesday, April 1. Eli is the son of Brian and Lisa Caton of Mound City.
Bryson Tenney is a fourth grader - At Mound City R-2. He is selecting his program in the Lego robot prior to launching the robot into accomplishing a set of missions on the Robot Game field of missions within a 2.5 minute time frame. Bryson is the son of Jason and Jennifer Tenney of Mound City.
Pictured above is the Robot Game field of missions - Set up by Mound City’s First Lego League, the Dominating Master Builders. Team members are Chanse Summers, Bryson Tenney, Eli Caton and Joseph Wheeler, all fourth graders at Mound City R-2. The team is coached by Joy Wheeler.

The First Lego League is a program for kids in grades 4-8. The league’s goal is to get kids excited about Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). This is the first year for Mound City to offer a robotics team. The team name is Dominating Master Builders. The team members are all in the fourth grade at Mound City R-2. Members of the team that meet in the Mound City United Method-ist Church basement are Chanse Summers, Bryson Tenney, Eli Caton and Joseph Wheeler. The team’s coach is Joy Wheeler of Mound City. The First Lego League program in Mound City is sponsored by Midwest Data Center of Rock Port, MO.
First Lego League has three components in its program. The first is Project which changes each year. This year, teams were to ask the question, “How can we help people learn about ____?” The team chooses the topic it wants to help people learn about. The team researches the ways people currently learn that subject and either come up with a new or better way to teach about that topic. It must be in a way that is not being done yet, or not being done very well. This is where the kids’ creativity and inge-nuity come out by creating a new product or method, or improve upon an existing product or method.
The second component is the Robot Game - a set of missions or obstacles set up on a 4’ x 8’ field. Team members build a functioning robot out of Lego materials and program the robot to accomplish as many of the missions as possible within 2 1/2 minutes. The final component of the First Lego League is Core Values. The core values are:
• We are a team.• We do the work to find solutions with guidance from our coaches and mentors.• We know our coaches and mentors don’t have all the answers, we learn together.• We honor the spirit of friendly competition.• What we discover is more important than what we win.• We share our experiences with others.• We display Gracious Professionalism and Coopertition® in everything we do.• We have FUN!The Dominating Master Builders demonstrated their missions in the Robot Game to parents, sponsors
and friends on Wednesday, April 1, in the basement of the church where they meet weekly. Refresh-ments followed the demonstrations.
The First Lego League of Mound City is accepting applications for enrollment for the next season starting in early August. For questions, contact Joy Wheeler at 660-572-0415.

Our AMAZING volunteers donated 305 hours to the food pantry the first quarter of 2015. WOW!!!
“Wisdom is knowing what to do next; virtue is doing it.” You all are obviously both wise and virtuous. Please accept my sincere
thanks for volunteering your time this past quarter. Everything that you did was appreciated, by staff, other volunteers, and customers alike. Without your effort and support, the food pantry would not
exist. Thank you for everything. I just hope that you continue to be so hardworking and helpful to so many people.
