Jimbo, The 2nd annual Veteran Appreciation Fun Run was a resounding

success!! We had over 40 vehicles that participated and I know that they, the Veterans, both in Kosciusko and Jackson enjoyed the activities.

The weather was hot but everybody got cooled down during the BBQ lunch at the Smoke House. There were at least 100 happy bellies as we pulled out of the parking lot hitting the highway to Kosciusko. A very successful trip, we only had one vehicle get a bit cantankerous, but a can of Sea Foam to the fuel tank, and we were all under way again.

I want to add a very special Thank You to JC Tyler and Attala Country Sheriff Tim Nail for the Police Escort thru Kosciusko. It was a very nice touch. Probably brought back some memories of being on the other end of the chase for some of the participants.

Plans are well under way for next year's Run. We will be going from Jackson to Collins. Date will be the first Saturday after Father's Day, June 22, 2013. Check the Events Section to stay updated.

We collected, by donation only, $400, that was divided between the two homes. Thanks again to the people that made it happen, you… the participant. Looking forward to seeing you at next year's Run.

Back on May 26, the Red Creek car club and the Coast Cruzers got together and put on a show for the local Multiple Sclerosis at the

Sawmill Family Restaurant in Wiggins. Normally the restaurant isn't open on Saturday, but Ms. Elaine

opened it for the show. She donated part of the sales to MS. That day. Which everyone was very thankful. Now to the eats.

If you have never ate there you are missing some good home style food. They serve breakfast anytime and have a lunch buffet. If you can't get enough to eat you have a problem.

Breakfast has the regular items, except the eggs are extra large, and the biscuits are on the big size also. Two eggs with sausage and biscuit and gravy will fill you up. Several people ate the western omelet that Saturday and said it was great also.

I have made a few trips to Hattiesburg since the show and stop there to eat breakfast.

The lunch buffet is great also, comes with a salad bar. Ms. Elaine and her staff can take the can vegetables and make them taste like you just picked them out of the garden. The sliced roast beef with gravy and rice will make a meal by its self.

If you go that way stop by and try the Sawmill. It is open from 7am to 2pm Monday thru Friday and Sunday 10am to 2pm, Closed Saturdays.

When you get ready to leave check out the old hand planes that were used to make molding, tongue and grove and the old wrenches used in the past.

As we get ready for the 3rd Annual Bay St Louis Masonic Lodge Open Car Show, Saturday, September 1st, I wanted to thank everyone for helping us raise over $ 8,000 dollars for the Shriners Hospital for Chil-dren last year. We were really happy at how everything turned out, even after we had to move the date.

We would like to invite everyone back and bring a friend to participate in this years event. We are going to have a bigger and better show this year. We have collected lot’s of prizes to give away and we are planning more things for the kids to do.

Main street in Bay St Louis is a great place to have a show. Even if some of your readers don't have a car to enter, we would still like to in-vite them down for all the fun...

It has taken Big B's Custom Rat Rodz, owned by Butch Inabnet of Terry MS; three years to build this one of a kind rat rod. Starting out with a 1953 Ford Pick-up Big B’s chopped the top 4”, then set it on a 2x3 ‘32 Ford clone frame. Behind the cab there’s a ‘46 Ford pick-up bed. Under-neath is a Ford 9 inch rearend with latter-bar setup and coil over shocks for the rear suspension. That should holdup to the 396 Big block Chevy, with a Edlebrock street tunnel ram and two 650 single feed Holley carbu-retors putting the power thru a turbo 400 transmission. For stopping power there are disk brakes, front and rear..

Butch says to look for it to be Cruizin Hwy 90 this October.. with only a 14 gallon fuel tank you probably see him at one of gas stations on the Coast. But you better look fast because this truck is made for drivin’

On April 13-15 my son Billy and I took our 1967 Camaro to the Super Chevy Show in Memphis, TN. On Saturday there were 510 cars and we won a top ten award (Editors Choice), and on Sunday we won an outstanding award in our class.

The Camero was a tribute car when we built it, but now it is a mem-ory car. Bill passed away in March 29, 2012, he was eighty-one.

The car is a nostalgia Super Stock C car. It is just like the one Bill “Grumpy” Jenkins ran in 1967. “Grumpy” was a 1967 NHRA record holder and national champ in Super Stock C.

We bought the Camero from Rodger D. Russell as a roller. Rodger raced it for many years with great success. It has been a race car for thirty-five years. We bought it about 3 years ago.

My son and I did the body work, sanded it down, taped it up and got a friend of ours to come over and paint it. The Camero has a big block Chevy with a 4-speed and 12 bolt rear

Mileage - does it really matter? This always makes me smile…

“CHEVROLET IMPALA: 1963 sport coupe, with only 14,000 original miles! 409/425, Red/Red, 4-spd, all numbers match, frame-up restoration, $35,000 obo. Call Larry (262) XXX-XXXX WI.”

Of course it could be any car, but would someone care to explain why would a car with only 14,000 miles on it from new needs a complete ‘frame-up restoration’? New paint and bushings maybe - but a total frame-up?

You’d think this example may be an isolated case, but we see over and over again as we sniff out bargains everyday among the classic cars for sale in the States. Outlandish mileage claims are something that still seems to happen often in America, yet for some reason Europeans it seems would never try to get away with claiming a vehicle has low mileage unless they are the original owners and have a stack of service receipts and other paper work to validate their claim.

Think about a brand new car, and what condition it would be in after being owned for just about one year - You'd expect it to be barely used, right? People generally take extra special care of their cars when they are new. The seats would be great, the carpets, the engine and compartment would still have the stickers on them that they left the factory with! This car has been around almost 38 years! Unless the guy selling the car is the original owner who can prove with a receipt from the dealership, that he bought it new, and has a damn good reason why anyone would shell out (back in them days) a couple of thousand dollars for a brand new car, use it for a year and then park it - You’ve got to know that the seller is a complete fool if he really thinks anyone is going to believe it.

The purpose in writing this article is to highlight cases perhaps not quite so obvious as the one above. You may see a car from the 70’s advertised with low original miles and think its great deal. Like this one:

On the face of it this sounds like a good deal doesn’t it? 70,000 miles over 21 years translates to about 3300 miles a year - talk about gently used! But again, unless this is the car's original owner, with supporting paperwork, it could have done 270,000! Upon a visual inspection, it’s often easy to tell from wear on the seat, carpets, pedal rubbers etc. that the car has high miles, However, I’ve known unscrupulous sellers purchase a ‘new’ interior from a real low mileage car from the same year, that was totaled in a wreck and switch them out. Wouldn’t it have been easy to simply ask this guy fax you some documentation to back up his claim before you waste your time traipsing all over the country?

I believe a good rule of thumb would be, not to expect to get a genuine mileage reading from a


car that is more than say 10-15 years old. By that time it’s probably passed through two or even three owners and rarely can its full history be traced. The bottom line though must be, whether or not the odometer reading is truly important, remember that a genuine low mileage car can in many ways be a worse buy than a high mileage vehicle that has been correctly maintained or restored. Additionally, who decided that a car with 100,000 miles on its engine is shot? Take each vehicle on it's own merits, and when it comes to classics, mileage should often take a back seat to factors like original equipment and structural condition, and even these can become irrelevant if the asking price is realistic!

That being said, if you are looking for the ‘Real McCoy’ you may be wondering what lengths one has to go to avoid getting burned? Well it’s really not so hard, you simply have to set your emotions aside and pay attention to the tell-tale signs.

Instrument binnacles with odometers that have lower mileage on them are easily found and can often be swapped out with equal ease, so here are a few checkpoints and hints that can help you recognize a potentially original low mileage classic whilst inspecting it in someone’s driveway. Remember at all times that things can easily be faked, as most parts are available through reproduction. There is no substitute for a good all-round knowledge of the model and of course common sense goes a long way in assessing the ratio of ‘wear: mileage' ratio.

You must look for the things that show wear and are difficult to replace or overlooked. The carpets for instance, but don’t look at the obvious, look at the floor beneath the carpet in the drivers foot well, especially where the driver's heel pivots to the accelerator? Check the headliner for stains or damage, the gearshift knob for wear, and the spare wheel, has it been used? If not it’s a good sign, but is it the original tire it left the factory with? If it has been used, how worn is the tread? Also, check the spare wheel fixings like the jack, lug wrench etc.- have they seen much use? The tires - broadly speaking, most cars leave the factory with a set of tires good for 40,000-miles and 25,000-mile brake pads; bear that in mind when you consider if a vehicle's odometer is accurate or not.

Pedal rubbers can also give clues, are they worn to excess or appear 'too new'? Pull back the rubbers and check to see if the pedal is polished from direct foot contact. Keys give good clues, are they showing the brass on the finger contact area - are they a 'sloppy' fit in the ignition barrel? Or do you believe the story that the originals were lost at the Newport Jazz festival in 1969 and the car has been little used since? The steering wheel, ask yourself if the surface is sufficiently 'scuffed' for the miles? Look at dash controls like heater knobs and the like.

Don’t forget the engine bay, does it appear to have been 'prepared' or recently cleaned? Are the engine mounting and bell housing bolts all present, correct and facing the right way? You may accept new water hoses, fan belt or water pump etc. But is it the original clutch, and if not, why was it changed? In all the years I've been in the business of buying classic cars for people, VERY rarely do genuine low mileage cars come up, they do - but it's not too often.

One example that comes to mind was an Austin-Healey that was bought brand new by a soldier two weeks before he was sent to Vietnam. He never came back. His mother, knowing how much he loved the car, couldn't bring herself to sell it, and it sat in a barn in Pennsylvania for over 30 years until it was discovered by a neighbor shortly before the old woman passed away. Ah Yes, those are the tales that keep us cranking our necks every time we think we catch a glimpse of an unusual car in someone’s yard. My wife kids me that I have 'Superman' x-ray vision that can see through trees, around barns and even in people’s back yards! LEAPIN' LIZARDS! Wildly successful Summer Classic Auto Show brings hundreds to the streets of Langhorne

LANGHORNE PA - A record number of classic automobiles steered onto the streets of Langhorne Borough on Saturday for the town's annual Summer Clas-sic Auto Show.

Organized by the Langhorne Borough Business Association, more than 150 vehicles of all makes and were on display for a show which organizers termed a wild success.

Comfortable temperatures and plenty of classic vehicles combined to create the perfect afternoon for hundreds of visitors as they strolled by the vehicles, parked along Maple Avenue and a portion of North Bellevue Avenue, both of which were closed to traffic for the day.

The Bucks County-based band, Shootin' Looks, entertained with classic rock from the front porch of one of the borough's Victorian homes, while visitors soothed their hunger pangs with hot dogs, burgers and beer served by the American Legion, sandwiches and drinks at the Langhorne Hotel and at the Sandwich Shop, as well as Kettle Korn and snow cones, offered by several food vendors.

Steve Masselle, who owns Masselle Auto Body, chaired the auto show committee with the help of Larry Good, the owner of Good Air Conditioning and Heating, and Jeff Bartlett, of Big Oak Tree Service.

Girls from Hooters assisted he judges in handing out 30 trophies, including Best of Show in the stock and modified categories and the Mayor's Trophy. This year, Ron Moorehead of Collegeville captured Best of Show in the stock category for his 1965 Ford GT350 Shelby. Best of Show in the modified category went to David Brudas for his 1968 Chevy Camaro. The Mayor's Trophy was taken home by Frank King for his red 1931 Chevrolet two-door sedan.

The event was co-sponsored by McCafferty Ford and Street Road Accessories.

Langhorne…...where’s that? Some of you ol’ race fans may remember Langhorne Speedway, an automobile racetrack in Middletown Township, Bucks County, near the borough of Langhorne, Pennsylvania, a northern suburb of Philadelphia.

The speedway was built by a group of Philadelphia racing enthusiasts known as the National Motor Racing Association (NMRA), and held its first race on June 12, 1926. Freddie Winnai of Philadelphia qualified in 42.40 seconds, a new world's record for a one-mile track; and went on to win the 50-lap main event. According to Walter Chernokal, Langhorne was the first dirt track built specifically for automobile racing. The track's unique circular

layout earned Langhorne the name "The Big Left Turn". The NMRA operated Langhorne through the 1929 season, staging 100-

lap events on Labor Days and occasional shorter races. Difficulties in track preparation, management disputes, and poor attendance drove the speedway to the brink of bankruptcy until noted promoter Ralph "Pappy" Hankinson took over in 1930. With partner "Lucky" Teeter, Hankinson brought in AAA Championship 100-lap races and continued to stage shorter Sprint car racing on the circular track. One of the first stock car races in the northeastern U.S. was held at Langhorne in 1940; Roy Hall of Atlanta, Georgia was victor in the 200-lap event.

Both Hankinson and Teeter died during World War II, and control of Langhorne Speedway passed to John Babcock and his family. Then in 1951, Irv Fried and Al Gerber became promoters. During this era, Langhorne hosted races for the United States' major national series: AAA and USAC Championship Cars, and NASCAR Grand National. It also hosted the nation's most noted race for the Modified division; the first post-war stock car race run at the facility was a National Championship Stock Car Circuit (a forerunner to NASCAR ) race in 1947, with Bob Flock taking home the checkered flag.

Catering chiefly to USAC's Championship Car division, in 1965 Fried and Gerber changed the track layout to a "D" by building a straightaway across the back stretch, and they paved the surface.

However, as suburban growth engulfed the speedway, the offers from developers became too tempting to refuse. Fried and Gerber announced the sale of the property to mall developers in 1967, but the speedway held on through five more seasons. The final checkered flag fell on October 17, 1971 at the National Open for Modified stock cars. "Indy cars" at Langhorne - AAA sanctioned Championship Car races at Langhorne Speedway twelve times between 1930 and 1955. USAC sanctioned Championship Car races there from 1956 to 1970, won by such famous names as A. J. Foyt, Mario Andretti, Bobby Unser, Gordon Johncock, Lloyd Ruby, and Eddie Sachs. American Motorcyclist Association - sanctioned National Championship Motorcycle races at Langhorne Speedway between 1935 and 1956. Langhorne in NASCAR - pioneering years. In September 1949, Langhorne hosted the fourth race of NASCAR's first year of sanctioning unmodified cars, then called Strictly Stock; Curtis Turner won that race. The Strictly Stock series was renamed the Grand National series for the 1950 season, and the series is now known as Sprint Cup. Langhorne continued to host an annual stop on the Grand National schedule from 1950 to 1957. Some of the era's top drivers won those Langhorne races: Curtis Turner again, Fonty Flock, Herb Thomas, Dick Rathmann, Donald Richman, Sr, Tim Flock, Buck Baker, Paul Goldsmith, and Fireball Roberts. Langhorne National Open - From 1951 to 1971, Langhorne Speedway hosted the Langhorne National Open, which became the nation's most prestigious race for Sportsman and Modified cars. Guaranteed starting positions were awarded to the winners (or highest finishers not already qualified) at special Langhorne Qualifier races held at weekly racetracks throughout the Northeast and Southeast. It was common to have over a hundred cars attempt to qualify for the National Open. From 1951 to 1957, the race was sanctioned by NASCAR. In 1961 and 1962, Supermodifieds raced with the Modifieds and Sportsman cars. Dutch Hoag was the most successful driver, winning five times. Hoag was the only driver to win the National Open on both the dirt and pavement surfaces. Deaths and serious injuries - The track became known as one of the more dangerous tracks in motorsports. Larry Mann, Frank Arford, Bobby Marvin, John McVitty, Joe Russo, Mike Nazaruk, and Jimmy Bryan were all killed racing at this track. In the first National Open in 1951, a large wreck blocked the track and burned driver Wally Campbell, that year's NASCAR National Modified Champion. Several other noted drivers were injured in accidents, often described as spectacular, due to high speeds on the mile-long but rough dirt surface.

In 1965, one of the most spectacular comebacks in auto racing history began with the serious burns and injuries to Mel Kenyon. Kenyon would later return to racing to place third at the Indy 500 and win numerous national midget racing championships. Site after closure of speedway - Sadly, the landscape of the once-famous

racetrack has been dramatically altered since that last race over 40 years ago, and no physical characteristics of the track itself remain. Shortly after Langhorne was closed for good in 1971, it was razed to make way for a new shopping development. Where the pits and grandstand were once located, a K-Mart, Sam's Club, and a vacant Levitz furniture warehouse now occupy the space. A heavily overgrown wooded area has completely enveloped the infield and backstretch, while a small grocery store and asphalt parking lots around the perimeter of the site cover up the rest.

On Saturday, October 14, 2006, almost 35 years to the day of the last race held at Langhorne, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission dedicated a historical marker at 1939 E. Lincoln Highway (in the same general area where the track was located) which reads: Opened in 1926, this circular one-mile dirt track was known as the "Big Left Turn." It hosted a NASCAR inaugural race in 1949. Notable drivers Doc Mackenzie, Joie Chitwood, Rex Mays, Lee Petty, Dutch Hoag, A.J. Foyt, and Mario Andretti raced here in stock, midget, sprint, and Indy cars. Langhorne was reshaped as a "D" and paved in 1965. The National Open Championship run here was regarded as the "Indy of the East." Final race was held in 1971.

If you read this far… guess you might be wondering why I put all this in the Gulf Coast MotorSports/53 deluxe magazine. Well Langhorne is my hometown and my brother Mike still lives there. He sent me the info about the car show and you might remember that I used to pick up a few extra bucks working at the track selling “Cold Drinks” “Get your

Peanuts… Candy” I wasn’t there on opening day… but I remember watching

all the motorcycles going down the hill behind our house heading to the track in the early 50’s… exciting times for a small boy. I still remember the day I hitch-hiked to the track and

talked my way into the speedway by taking a job selling drinks and candy from a big box hanging around my neck.

The guy told if I did good in the stands I could work my way into the infield. Didn’t take me long to make my way to that job. A

few more races and a lot of begging and I was allowed into the pits and could sell to the drivers and crews. I was maybe fourteen or fifteen by then and being at the track was a big deal to me.

OK I'm an old guy…there I said it. I've never wanted to admit it. You don't really get old, just your body does. You are the exact same person you were at 17. Really! Your thinking can get old, but that person inside you is still the same. You are that same person that did all those crazy things and lived to tell about it. I will never, ever grow up, what's the point, grow up to become miserable? I can remember sitting in the 6th grade and our assignment was to figure out how old we would be when the millennium came around, the year 2000. When I saw that age number, my thoughts were that was an eternity away. It was so far away that it was never going to happen in my 6th grade mind. Well, when I got up and looked into the mirror this morning, it was over 12 years after the year 2000 and it was sure hard to see the 17 year old in there, but I feel the same, until I try to get up.

You know our parents did not get our fads growing up for the most part, the hair, the music, the styles or the Hot Rods. Remember…”turn that racket down”? But I would like to think that our Hot Rod generation was a little bit more open minded than our parents were.

It was time for the 10th annual “Scrapin' the Coast Car Show”. I had never been to the show because it was just not my thing, (as bad as I hate to admit it I have graduated to “Old School”), and the vehicles slammed down on air bags is just not my cup of tea.

However, I am extremely happy that there are a few generations behind us that are into cool cars. If you love cars, you have to admire a car that is a great work of art, even if it's not your style. Plus there were many of the old school Hot Rods there.

The Scrapin' the Coast Car Show is a tremendously cool event and we had a blast. The MS Coast Coliseum was packed inside and out with people and cool cars and trucks. Packed, packed, packed and they were still coming in. Scrapin' the Coast had over 2200 registered cars, over 50 vendors and over 23,000 spectators came through the turnstiles. If you like cool cars, don't miss next years Scrapin' the Coast…it's a keeper.

Hope you enjoy the 10th annual Scrapin' the Coast photos as much as I did going and taking them for you. You may have gotten old, but you can stay young, get that ole Hot Rod out of the garage and enjoy that 17 FOREVER Hot Rod state of mind!

Where In The World Are My Hearing Aids? A true story as told to “Cubby” by Steve Hampton. I got up at 4:00 A.M. as usual, showered and got ready to leave for

work. I always leave my watch, eyeglasses, cell phone and hearing aids on the kitchen counter when I go to bed at night. I went to put my hear-ing aids in and they were not there. I looked everywhere I could think of around the house, and no luck. I finally went into the bedroom and asked my wife if she knew where they might be. Her exact words were: “wherever you put them”. Genius! I searched more with no success, so I put in my old pair and went to work. I might have been the only one that believed I was sane.

I was speaking with an acquaintance telling him the story. He stated that rodents had stolen items in his house.

That evening I went through my usual procedure leaving my things on the counter. To these items I added a moat of sticky traps surrounding the devices and sprinkled talc all over the counter. The following morning when I arose, there was one hearing aid on the counter, lots of little powdery footprints and a mouse stuck in the trap with the other hearing aid. He was still alive because this was a humane trap. I beat his little feet with a toothpick and heated them up with a match, but he refused to reveal the location of my hearing aids. He also refused to repay me for their replacement cost. I am sorry to say that he died during interrogation, and was laid to rest.

OK, I didn't really torture the tiny creature, but evil thoughts did cross my mind. I am still searching for the devices as new ones are being made. Worry persists that there may be an entire army of his peers at work in my residence. I do search for things a lot.

This is the story he told me. Steve says it is true. It sounds questionable to me. You be the judge.

Now, I have a few other thoughts I'd like to share, nothin' earth shatterin', just a few random thoughts cloggin' up my brain!

Okay, here goes . . . I'm no rocket scientist but I'm no dummy either. I do know one thing for sure, when you're Southern, phonics are important and useless all at the same time! For example . . . Boudreaux, LaFourche, or Nacogdoches!

My husband's 6 year old grandson, who lives in Illinois, told his mother “Jeanie says some things weird” and then proceeded to do his imitation of me, “Whut's wraaawng” . . . translation “what's wrong!” My response is to laugh and say “I don't sound like that, do I?”

The truth is, I don't think I talk funny at all and as Jimmy Buffett says, “ I've got a native tongue from way down south, that sits in the cheek of my Gulf Coastal mouth”! I sound just fine to me!

I'm a sign reader! Especially when I travel, I find it very entertainin' to see just what people will put in a sign . . . names of towns, businesses, local attractions, and churches. And if you are in the car with me, it almost becomes a game.

Here are a few of my favorites from our recent trip to LA, and for the uninformed, that's “Southerneese” for Lower Alabama!

Here goes . . . D'Lo Water Park and Dry Creek Water Park just doesn't sound like much fun, but Grand Paradise Water Park, that sounds like a party!

And does the name of your church get you closer to heaven? Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Galilee Baptist Church, Jesus Name Apostolic Church, New Horizon Church International and their 200,000 sq. foot converted warehouse, or Little Rock Baptist Church of Foley, Alabama, and then my personal favorite . . . wait for it . . . Overcoming Faith Church! I'm not sure if that's an oxymoron or not but it sure does make me think twice.

I've also figured out that there are many more 'car collectors' in Arkansas than I ever expected. No, not Classic Car Collectors, just collectors . . . and mostly junk cars! Just drive it 'til it craps out, park it in the yard and get another! Holy Moly!

Rusty’s Jamco Update In the July issue I introduced you to Jamco Suspensions. This month I'll

introduce you to a fellow whom I would guess is employed by Jamco. If you read the article you know the story. As things began to gain recognition and attention a man by the name MIKE B came on the scene. MIKE B, I'm sure was appointed the duty of settling the situation by J C Genty, as you remember is either the owner or operator (or both) of Jamco Suspensions.

Mike B must have a great deal of support and good phone numbers because he made things happen. As of the printing of the July issue I was still missing some of my parts however as of 06-21-2012 Mike B had successfully completed my order that I had placed 12-22-2011. This due mostly to the efforts of Mike B and I thank him. The parts are well on their way toward installation and the coupe is shaping up.

Now don't think this is without misguidance and mishaps. The A-arms and spindles fit well however the swaybar kit is for stock a-arms and will not fit the tubular a-arms. The bracket that comes with the suspension kit is not compatible to the swaybar kit. I would recommend you box the crossmember they want you to bolt this to as it is the crossmember for the radiator support. You will need to modify this setup because the swabar is too narrow to reach the frame rails.

So the sales of this kit is somewhat misleading and a little short of all the necessary mounting bolts.. but "Cornet Bolt" can fix you up on that.

I haven't tried the test fit of the rear leaf springs yet but I will be upgrading the bushings. The bushings in the kit are 1949 stock.

I'm now playing with rack n pinion steering and that is a challenge but only because of my choice of motor and transmission.

Rusty PS I need to make a correction for last month: the year model for spindles was incorrect, They are 75-80 FORD Granada. My bad!

The Matinee Rocker: By: DD Thunders.

We are right in the middle of sum-mer time big movie blockbuster releases and I have been busy watch-ing my share of major releases and some fine independent offerings. This month I will review a few major films that I had the pleasure of watching and some that, well, I was stuck watching because I paid 20 bucks for a ticket, soda and candy. 24 bucks if I get a small popcorn! First up for review is the major re-lease, Rock of Ages. A Broadway play adapted to film starring Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Russell

Brand, Julliane Hough, Catherin Zeta-Jones and many more fine actors who fill out this bloated, warm and fuzzy portrait of 80's hair metal musi-cal mayhem. The main reason I wanted to watch this movie was to hear Tom Cruise sing! I can’t even think of the last time I saw a Tom Cruise project on the big screen (4th of July, Rain Man and a Guilty Pleasure flick, Risky Business). He has done some decent work but this musical romp missed the mark and left me wondering how director, Adam Shank-man, thought this would play out. I know its a musical but come on.

I have nothing against them but I would have rather watched a Broad-way adaptation of a movie of,…. uh, singing cats or something crazy like that. Hey, wait a minute, I would have rather watched a bunch of cats singing the biggest hair metal hits of the late 80's. Now that is a musical movie idea that is well worth the $5.50 (matinee ticket price).

Actually, Tom doesn't sound that bad belting out Bon Jovi's greatest hits while rocking a giant weave hair do and leather pants! I know for a fact that a few of the principles were borrowing someone's vocal styling's because I just worked in a movie shot in New Orleans and I heard them sing. Let’s just enjoy that Hollywood magic.

A weak script and a predictable plot left me wondering what music the direct to video Rock of Ages 2 will cover? At least they didn't have Alec Baldwin wearing the tight leather pants!

Any time you are watching a scene in a movie where mullet haired Greyhound bus passengers get up and bust into song you might have made a mistake. I give this movie 4picks out of a dozen.

Next Up……. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. With a movie title like this I had no choice but to get a ticket, giant

soda, candy of choice, (lately Reeces Pieces) and sit in my favorite sec-tion of my local theater, the top row, and enjoy the only vampire movie I paid good money to see on the big screen.

Directed by Timur Bekmambetov, this horror/thriller was a pleasant surprise. A pretty interesting plot keeps this fiction based account of our favorite top-hat wearing, famous speech giving, president who freed the slaves and put a serious dent (pun) into the 19th century vampire popula-tion. Ol’ Abe, played by actor Benjamin Walker, is portrayed as a meek, bumbling youngster who masters the rare form of kung-fu, where you kill things with an axe, to revenge his family's name and become our 16th president.

Good cinematography and well paced action keep this movie moving right along. Just the idea of a story where a president of the United States is battling and beating a horrible enemy makes me proud to be an Ameri-can movie goer! The only thing that would make this movie better is if Abe could invent a time machine, sharpen his favorite silver coated axe, and drop the hammer on these lame 21st century high-school attending, p.c. teenage vampires who are breeding on the big screen. Now that would be a great sequel.... I give this firm 8 out of a dozen picks.

Let's talk about Hawaii: In the March Issue I wrote about Duke Kahanamoku-KING OF THE

BEACH. Then in June I told you he had five brothers who, unlike him-self, spent a good portion of their lives as Waikiki beachboys. In June I told you about two of them Sam & David. Next brother was Louis, who became deputy sheriff under Duke, was a talented surfboard paddler, water-polo player, and canoe coach. Along with with Sam and Sargent, he is credited with inventing surfboard water-polo, a game which became the rage at Waikiki during the late 1920s and 1930s. Bill (“Tarball”) Kaha-namoku, the only brother to have a nickname, was a popular beachside comedian who worked for years as caretaker for Herb Briner, owner of Kahala Manufacturing and the yacht Miss Hawaii. Tarball, who also was the shortest of the six brothers, was distinguished by a crooked spine, while Sargent Kahanamoku, the youngest brother, had a long crooked nose.

“Hey, Sarge, move your nose,” the other beachboys would tease. “No can see Diamond Head.”

Sargent, who later became the official greeter for Standard Oil Com-pany in Hawaii, was a powerful swimmer. In the 100-meter freestyle, he was once clocked at under 60 seconds. In 1933, he made a famous rescue at Waikiki, single-handedly towing a disabled speed boat to shore and saving the life of Paul Fagan, president of Universal Motors. According to a newspaper account, “ the two had gone out for a spin when Fagan's boat ran out of gas about three-and-half miles off shore and started to drift. After trying vainly to make headway by paddling with a seat torn from the boat, Sargent jumped overboard and began to swim to shore, towing the craft. There was no rope available, so Sargent was forced to hang on to the bow with one hand and paddle with the other, kicking at the same time.” Four hours later he made it to safety.

In addition, Duke had three sisters: Bernice, Kapiolani, and Maria. His father, Duke Halapu, was a policeman whose birth in 1869 coincided with the first visit to the Islands of the Duke of Edinburgh. His mother, Julia Paoa, came from Kalia, the dry ewa end of Waikiki, which is today the site to the Hilton Hawaiian Villiage. I was trying to find another picture of my beachboys you readers would like. I found one, no I found two. First one: The fish may have been big at Waikiki in the old days, but they were not this big! Panama Dave's father was Portuguese-Hawaiian and his mom pure Hawaiian. He was born in Kualoa, Oahu. No other job ex-cept being a beachboy would have suited him quite so well. He lived without pretense (and with out shoes), teaching surfing in the morn-ing, playing gin rummy in the afternoon, and


playing at night while the waves washed the beach clean. Sooner or later most beachboys got off the beach, but Panama made it his life. I have so much more I would like to tell you about Panama Dave, you would love. He was The Clown Price of Waikiki. But, I'd better get back to Mississippi.

Time for everyone to be brought up-to-date! Crickets Honky-Tonk on Lakeshore and Lower Bay Rd. intersection,

had their grand opening June 1st and will now be open Thursday, Friday, Saturday. At this time 5pm till. Band starts at 10 p.m. Call if you are coming a long ways!

Last month I told you about Bruce opening the old Dempsey's next to Crickets. Well I was by there and he had a large Selliers II Sign laying against the outside wall. He told me he planned on opening Thursday June 28th. I'll keep y'all informed. Dempsey's moved to the Kiln. (see their ad)

Next bulletin is “Red's Pub” in Kiln was closed & front door locked, with a small note taped to the inside of the glass front door saying “we are closed, thanks for everything”. So, I go up the road a block, to the curve (like I did) and see Rene' who works doubles on Wednesday, and regular on Thursday and Friday. I have known her for over 10 years. She is a superb bartender and is in the 3 way tie for my Hawaiian Sunset. I think she told me she was raised in Waveland. If you need to know who's been good, bad or ugly, ask her, she knows everything. I forgot to mention she works at CC'S Bar (see their ad)

Last but not least in my report “THE BAR” next to Beningos across from the terminal in downtown Bay St. Louis, don't know what the hap-pening was, but its closed with an iron gate across the front door! Next day a “for rent” sign in window by the landlord. I sure loved that place. It had the French quarter style.

I was at the VFW (Bay St. Louis) with Larry, (as Debbie , bartender at Anita's Bar, says Pineapple's Husband) and Jim Mitchell (owner of the Red Rooster Resort on Waveland Blvd.) Red Rooster Resort is great place! It has the big Main House with 4 bedroom next door is the pool house with 2 bedrooms. The big house has a hot tub in back and there is big in ground pool for Big House and Pool House. Jim lives on the property. He has a nice little cottage next to the Big House. You can rent the Big House, Pool House or both. When the cruisers come to town they will love it. Safe parking for their cars. Oh, it's about 3 or 4 blocks from the beach. Back to the VFW. Since we don't drink beer I bought in my Crown Royal Blue Bag with vodka in the bottle. Lacey (Mike's daughter) was bartender; she brought us our set up. She just got married! Went on a cruise, said she picked the wrong cruise, not much too do, so they spent a lot of time in the casino. You should have gone to Hawaii Lacey. On your 1st anniversary, I'm sure your Dad Mike will sponsor you and your husband on a trip to Hawaii?

I was talking to Mike and Bobby and they still have that huge (2500 sq. ft.) room for rent at the VFW, great for anniversary functions, wed-ding receptions, class reunions etc. They still serve some kind of seafood dinner on Fridays around $6.00. Bobby seems to do all the work, Mike seems to be real good at “supervising”. I guess riding that lawn mower takes all the energy out of him. (only kidding Mike) We left VFW and headed home. Were not in Precious (300zx) you know who, was driving in his “American Lincoln Town Car”. I told him I wanted to drive by Trapani's to see if they where still packing them in, especially the side-walk tables on weekends! I prefer the balcony myself, makes me remem-ber Waikiki.

As we were driving home I thought of Jim of Trax's in Long Beach, he was in the hospital. I hope he is out and recovering. I'll let you know next issue. (he makes a great Muffalatta). Since, I was thinking of Wai-kiki I forced a promise out of “you know who” that before the end of the year we are going home” to visit Waikiki. I would love to write a whole article on that trip. Check the full big happenings in Sept. 21-23.

TABOO TIKI The New/Old Diamondhead Rod Run. It's at Diamond-head Resort, MS. I think Jimbo said they were planning a Luau and other things. You will love the Luau at Diamond Head, but when you order “Poi” be ready to add something too it! Howlies have problems learning to eat it with fingers. It's known as 1 finger, 2 finger, or 3 finger Poi. The thicker it is the less of your fingers needed.

It's Tuesday morning and I'm headed for the Kiln, but first I had to have scrambled eggs, spam, and steamed rice. (my cat “EASY” was

happy, she loves spam) You know who left early to see Gordon of GTG-U-PULL IT. (see his ad) (so I didn't have to open all the windows to get the smell of spam out) Larry has a 78 Ford Lariat Long Bed he is thinking of restoring and selling. (I hope) Thanks to Buck & Kurt at B & K Auto-motive in Waveland “Precious” is running great!

I turn on the Beach Boys and I'm a Happy Hawaiian. I'm on 603 headed for Kiln and I spotted the gate open at the old “Cave”. I see a sign and it says “THE LAUNCH”. I thought “great” I'll stop on my way back. I head for the what was Red's Pub. It's now going to be “COWBOYS & ANGELS”, new owners Marcus & Tamye Cuevas. Dustin Ferguson is the Food & Bev. Mgr. Serving Breakfast Buffet Mon-Friday 6:00 a.m. to 9 a.m. & Saturday 8a.m-11a.m. $4.95 all you can eat. No Sunday Breakfast. They have a full bar. They plan on a grand opening July 28th. I'll keep y'all informed.

I head back to check out “THE LAUNCH” as I walk in who do I see but Sharon as bartender. She is Joe Southerns wife and was a day man-ager or something when it was the cave. We stayed with them and our pal Larry Spencer (R.I.P.) many years ago when they had a house in Jordon River Shores over looking the river which had little alligator in it. Joe killed it. I had a picture of Joe holding up the alligator with me, but Katrina took it away. The Launch serves beer and wine coolers. The place is only 320 sq. ft. As you walk in Juke Box on left and bar. Bar is about 10 stools. Along the inside of the building is around twenty bar stools facing the water. I decided to have a wine cooler. Rita one of the owners was there and said they had only been open 3 weeks. I think she said they open M-F 7 a.m. - Sat-Sun 6 a.m. I not sure of the bar hours.

I head on home to take a break. You know who, informs me that Anita's has happy hour 4-6 weekdays. So I say ok, but only if we take Precious (300ZX) and I'll drive. Anita's seems to always have Corvettes parked in front and I not going to show up in a Lincoln. As you can tell Anita's is a favorite of mine, “Gator” (Aluminating polishers) drops in from his shop up the street (Hwy 90). Andy had his going away party there and we will miss him. “CJ'S and also (Herman?) of “Gabbys” on Main St. and Harry of The Launch all hang out there. They are a lot fun to talk to.

“New Advertiser” is “SLOPPY DOG” on the corner of 2nd (BSL) and also on the same corner is “UGLY PIRATE” they have outside tables at both places. Great “Dogs” at Sloppys, and great Spinach Bread (Popeye Bread) at Pirate.

Would you believe it! In this same corner is Charlotte's Hair Salon & Gift Shop. She has great stuff. Like I said last time she has a beauty salon in back, one chair. If you go in mention that you read about her shop and she just might give you a discount!

I have to mention El Maguey Mexican Restaurant in Bay St. Louis. I decided to stop by about 2 p.m. to drop off some magazines and say hi to Juan the owner. He was not there so, I decided to have a glass of wine and of course chips and their special dip they make. I have never had a dip this one. They make it in layers. First black beans, house salsa, and on top white cheese spread. I was just going to pay my bill and Hector the bartender told me I had a second glass coming. They have happy hour 7 days a week 2 p.m.-5 p.m. 2 for 1 which includes any drink!

Before I headed home, I decided to go to Beningos Bar across from the train station in Bay St. Louis. They were the first bar to open after Katrina. Anyway, I have known Dawn the bartender for a long time. So, I thought I'd have my Hawaiian Sunset and put her in the contest.

A German tourist jumped in the freezing water and saved my precious little dog. Upon getting back on the bridge, he checked my puppy out and told me,

"Ze dog is ok. He vill be fine." Due to his selfless heroic act, I asked, "are you a Vet?" he replied,

"Vet?... I'm freaking soaked!"


Two couples were playing poker one evening. Jim accidentally dropped some cards on the floor. When he bent down under the table to pick them up, he noticed Les's wife, Sue wasn't wearing any underwear under her dress! Shocked by this, Jim upon trying to sit back up again, hit his head on the table and emerged red-faced.

Later, Jim went to the kitchen to get some refreshments. Les's wife followed and asked, “Did you see anything that you like under there?” Surprised by her boldness, Jim admitted that, well indeed he did.

She said, “Well, you can have it but it will cost you $500.” After taking a minute or two to assess the financial and moral costs of

this offer, Jim confirms that he is interested. Sue told him that since her husband Les played golf Friday afternoons

and Jim didn't, Jim should be at her house around 2PM. Friday afternoon. When Friday rolled around, Jim showed up at Les's house at 2PM.

sharp and after paying Sue the agreed sum of $500 - they went to the bedroom, and closed their transaction, as agreed.

Jim quickly dressed and left. As usual, Les came home from golf at 6pm. And upon arriving, asked

his wife: “Did Jim come by the house this afternoon?” With a lump in her throat Sue answered “Why yes, he did stop by for a

few minutes this afternoon.” Her heart nearly skipped a beat when her husband curtly asked, “And did he give you $500?”

Sue, using her best poker face, replied, “Well, yes, in fact he did give me $500.”

Les, with a satisfied look on his face, surprised his wife by saying, “He came by the golf club this morning and borrowed $500 from me. He promised he'd stop by our house this afternoon on his way home and pay me back.”

Now THAT, my friends, is a poker player ....

An attractive blonde from Cork, Ireland, arrived at a casino. She seemed a little intoxicated and bet twenty thousand dollars in a single roll of the dice. She said, "I hope you don't mind, but I feel much luckier when I'm Completely nude." With that, she stripped from the neck down, rolled the dice and with an Irish brogue yelled, "Come on, baby, Mama needs new clothes!"

As the dice came to a stop, she jumped up and down and squealed. "Yes! Yes! I won, I won!" She hugged each of the dealers, picked up her

winnings and her clothes and quickly departed. The dealers stared at each other dumbfounded. Finally, one of them

asked, "What did she roll?" The other answered, "I don't know - I thought you were watching."

MORAL OF THE STORY - Not all Irish are drunks, not all blondes are dumb, but.....all men.....are men!

A young Louisiana woman was so depressed that she decided to end her life by throwing herself into the Gulf, but just before she could throw herself from the docks, a handsome young cajun man stopped her.

"You have so much to live for," said the man. "I'm a sailor, and we are off to Italy tomorrow. I can stow you away on my ship. I'll take care of you, bring you food every day, and keep you happy."

With nothing to lose, combined with the fact that she had always wanted to go to Italy , the woman accepted.

That night the sailor brought her aboard and hid her in a small but comfortable compartment in the hold. From then on, every night he would bring her three sandwiches, a bottle of red wine, and make love to her until dawn. Two weeks later she was discovered by the captain during a routine inspection.

"What are you doing here?" asked the captain. "I have an arrangement with one of the sailors," she replied. "He brings

me food and I get a free trip to Italy ." "I see," the captain says. Her conscience got the best of her and she added, "Plus, he's screwing

me." "He certainly is," replied the captain. "This is the Cameron Parish

Ferry."

A priest and a rabbi were sitting next to each other on an airplane. After a while, the priest turned to the rabbi and asked, 'Is it still a requirement of your faith that you not eat pork?”

The rabbi responded, 'Yes, that is still one of our beliefs.' The priest then asked, 'Have you ever eaten pork?' To which the rabbi replied, 'Yes, on one occasion I did succumb to

temptation and tasted a ham sandwich.' The priest nodded in understanding and went on with his reading. A while later, the rabbi spoke up and asked the priest, 'Is it still a

requirement of your church that you remain celibate?' The priest replied, 'Yes, that is still very much a part of our faith.' The rabbi then asked him, 'Have you ever fallen to the temptations of

the flesh?' The priest replied, 'Yes, rabbi, on one occasion I was weak and broke

with my faith.' The rabbi nodded understandingly and remained silent, thinking for

about five minutes. Finally, the rabbi said, 'Beats a ham sandwich, doesn't it?

A group of friends from the Cottondale Baptist Church wanted to get together on a regular basis, socialize, and play games. The lady of the house was to prepare the meal. When it came time for Al and Janet to be the hosts, Janet wanted to outdo all the others. She decided to have mushroom-smothered steak, but because the mushrooms were so expensive, she told her husband, "No mushrooms. They are too high."

He said, "Why don't you go down in the pasture and pick some of those mushrooms? There are plenty in the creek bed."

She said, "No, some wild mushrooms are poisonous." He said, "Well, I see varmints eating them, and they're OK." So Janet decided to give it a try. The next morning she picked a bunch,

cleaned and sliced them for her smothered steak. Then she went out on the back porch and gave Ol' Spot (the yard dog) a double handful. Ol' Spot ate every bite. All morning long, Janet watched Ol' Spot, and the wild mushrooms didn't seem to affect him, so she decided to use them.

The meal that evening was a great success. Janet had even hired a lady from town to help her serve. After everyone had finished, they relaxed, socialized, and played '42' and dominoes. About then, the helper lady came in and whispered in Janet's ear, "Mrs. Williams, Ol' Spot is dead."

Janet went into hysterics. Finally, she calmed down enough to call the doctor and tell him what had happened.

The doctor said, "That's bad, but I think we can take care of it. I will call for an ambulance and I will be there as quickly as possible. We'll give


everyone enemas, and we'll pump out everyone's stomach. Everything will be fine. Just keep everyone calm."

Soon they could hear the siren as the ambulance was coming down the road. The EMTs and the doctor had their suitcases, syringes, and a stomach pump. One by one, they took each person into the bathroom, gave them an enema, and pumped out their stomach. After the last one was finished, the doctor came out and said, "I think everything will be fine now," and he left.

They were all sitting around the living room, looking pretty weak, when the helper lady came in and whispered to Janet, "You know, that fellow that run over Ol' Spot never even stopped.'

A man is at work one day when he notices that his co-worker is

wearing an earring. The man knows his co-worker to be a normally conservative fellow, and is curious about his sudden change in "fashion sense"

The man walks up to him and says, "I didn't know you were into earrings."

"Don't make such a big deal, it's only an earring," he replies sheepishly. His friend falls silent for a few minutes, but then his curiosity prods

him to ask, "So, how long have you been wearing one?" "Ever since my wife found it in my truck." Gabriel came to the Lord and said, "I have to talk to you. I have

some Cajuns up here in Heaven who are causing some problems. They are swinging on The pearly gates, sliding down stairway to

Heaven, and my horn is missing! They play their accordions and dance all night! Crawfish shells and beer cans are all over the streets of gold and they're

making sausage, boudin, and cracklins on every corner. There is rice all over the clouds! They have eaten almost every animal

up here! Some folks are walking around with one wing missing. There is barbecue sauce all over their robes and some of them aren't

even wearing their halos, saying they won't wear it because it doesn't have an LSU logo on it.

The Lord said, "I made them special, as I did you, my angel. Heaven is home to all my children. If you really want to know about problems, let's call the Devil and see how he is dealing with his Cajuns."

The Devil answered the phone, "Hello? Dang it, hold on!" The Devil returned to the phone and said, "Hello God, what can I do for

you?" God replied, "Tell me what kind of problems you are having down

there with the Cajuns you have there." The Devil said, "Wait a minute," and puts the Lord on hold.. After 5 minutes he returned to the phone, and said, "Okay, I'm back. What's the question?" God asked again, "What kind of problems are you having with the

Cajuns down there?" The Devil said, "Man, I don't believe this... Hold on, God.." This time, the Devil was gone for 15 minutes. The Devil returned and

said, "I'm sorry, God, I can't talk right now. These coon asses have done put out the fire, and are holding a benefit jambalaya dinner to install air conditioning!!"

Harold was an old man. He was sick and in the hospital. There was one nurse that just drove him crazy. Every time she came in,

she would talk to him like he was a little child. She would say in a patronizing tone of voice, “And how are we doing this morning”, or “Are we ready for a bath”, or “Are we hungry?”

Old Harold had had enough of this particular nurse. One day, at breakfast, Old Harold took the apple juice off the tray and put it in his bed side stand. Next, he was given a urine bottle to fill for testing. So you know where the juice went!

The nurse came in a little later, picked up the urine bottle and looked at it. “My, it seems we are a little cloudy today.”

At this, Old Harold snatched the bottle out of her hand, popped off the top, and drank it down, saying, “Well, I'll run it through again. Maybe I can filter it better this time.” The nurse fainted!

Old Harold just smiled!


Some are in wheel chairs, many are dead, none of my articles have they read, but my

thoughts always return to them. My pal John Chamblee reported last month from Mobile International the following: Being an avid stock racing fan, I listened with interest an interview with NASCAR Truck series veteran Rick Crawford. I learned Rick owns Mobile International Speedway in Irvington, Alabama. The Memorial Day highlight was The Miller Lite 100 Salute to our Troops So the little lady and I said, why not let's check it out. The facility is right of off highway 90 and share the location with a very nice drag strip. Let me say this, the facility is first class all the way. Restrooms and concessions are well laid out and very clean.

Immediately after qualifying, they ask everyone to get on the track and “Walk the Track” for the veterans. Caring the flag and leading the way was Rick Crawford himself. I don't know the banking of the track but it is a very high banked, wide, asphalt ½ mile oval. After the crowd completed the walk Rick greeted everyone as they made their way back to the stand.

The races were fantastic. They tout this track to be the fastest ½ in the south and I believe it. The super lates had about 5 lead changes and it was easily 5 or 6 cars capable of winning this race.

The track crew was awesome. Even minor tasks were done with a sense of urgency. The announcers were very informative, the concession staff fast and friendly. I have been to many a track in the south and must say this is the best track I have ever visited. Rick Crawford is constantly walking the stands, shaking hands and posing for pictures. Truly one of the good ones!

reports as the season goes on. He is really a dirt track freak (like all good racers). He is big on the Lucas Oil “super stocks” that run on dirt. Same as Tony Stewarts group when he gets “some” of the NASCAR SPRINT CUP guys to come to El Dora (he owns it) and run the dirt. They tell me Kasey Kahne still has a world of outlaw sprinter that he drives once in a while.

I'm going to mention a few “old” names who had a special genius talent with racing. I'll start with the latest and try not to bore you.

Bob Higman was a dear friend, and a fantastic car builder, engine builder. He died 1/13/2010. I received letter & xmas card on 12/16/2009 and he ended it with, “to my southern friends, I love you both Bob”. For you NASCAR people, Bob went to Chevrolet for Tony Stewart (the year Tony won the midget, sprint, and silver crown championships all in the same year mostly dirt I might add) and with Chevrolet engineers Bob developed a `60 V

-6 which would fit into the midget frame for Tony. I asked “Bob” once if the 60` would put out the same H.P.. as the `90

and his answer was “NO” but it would wind up tighter! More RPM range.

Bob got cancer of the colon, prostrate, and other intimate parts and after the operation's (plural) he could barely walk. Tony Stewart came in the shop, took one look at Bob (who never complained) and the next day a fully electric wheel chair arrived, from Tony, and an SUV with ramps and accessories.

Tony sent a driver & others, to every race Bob wanted to go to that Tony was in. This included the “Copper Classic” at PIR in Phoenix, AZ. Now that you this, don’t you think that Tony is an ok guy?

Racers are a strange bunch, you have the “characters” like Allen Heath who used to lite firecrackers in the pits when no one was looking, and then laugh & laugh!

Tony won the midget championship with the V-6 Bob built. Bob was inducted into the midget hall of fame, that's Bob's photo, and

he certainly deserved to be in the hall of fame. I was running a `90 V-6 that Bob had built at Kaytech for Ken Schrader

(former Nascar) and they took it to PIR (Phoenix, Az) and won it! I purchased that engine from Bob, towed the midget from AZ out to La

Fayette, Ind., where he had his shop and he modified the chassis to accept the V-6 (90) (from the lay down sesco)

Bob was “the man” with Cosworths in midgets, Chevrolet hired him for racing research for the OHC 4 cylinder engine. They of course gave him anything for Tony's engine.

I say hi to Bob every morning, his photo and xmas letter to us, 3 weeks before he died, is on my bathroom wall next to the mirror.

Next stop is Allen Heath (photo). This is one of my favorite photos, It's the Trophy Dash at San Bernardino, 1954 or maybe 1955 or 1953. There also is my next door neighbor, Willie Swift in the #19 car, he owned and drove his own car, as did I, we helped each other, we were very good friends, we and Don Edmunds, and Billy Garrett used to tow with each other in a caravan 3,4, or 5 of us pulling midgets it was a “ball”.

The #97 car is of course Allen Heath but the #97 was built by my very good friend Bob Clawson who had, “Bobs” Brake Shop” in Lakewood, CA. That's not a Kurtis, it was built by a Bob who was “very good” at doing “anything” mechanical & engineering.

He gas welded everything on the frame and accessories! I asked him why? And he said “Larry, when you gas weld, you “fuse” the two metals together, when

you “stick” weld you just fastening them together”. Also notice the Sponsor “Torco” stands for “Thermic Oil Refinery”. It

was based in Santa Fe Springs, CA. The owner was “Bob Lancaster” a good friend of Bob Clawson and also a friend of mine, and also sponsored my car in addition to Bob Clawson's #97.

Bikers will remember “Torco” from the 1950's. Its still around and both “Bobs” are dead. Bob of “Torco” told me many things, and in 12 years of racing I never lost an engine! He had the very 1st synthetic oil on the market that I ran for 12 years! (back in 1950's)

Notice the front skid bars on the underside for the front “NERF BAR” as they were called in those days! This was a copy my front bars modified by Kuzma.

OK, Mitch (one of my ARM pals) note where the header is coming out of the frame, would you guess this engine is like 2 or 3 inches lower?

We ran “Berdoo” Saturday night and during the race, #97 overheated, and “froze” the engine. We all towed from San Bernardino (Berdoo) back to Norwalk and Lakewood to Bobs Brake Shop to see if he could get it together for Sunday, ( a day race at Long Beach Memorial Stadium). There was 3 of us all with our own cars hoping it wasn't too bad for him. Well it had a hole in the radiator and it got real hot and “froze” the engine.

Willie and I lived about 8 miles away in Norwalk, CA, as did Johnny Tolan, so I looked at Bob and said “get that one, out of there, fix the radiator and I'll have an engine here in a hour”.

Willie and I went home, dumped our trailers (race cars) loaded my extra engine that was on the bench (by grabbing the headers, and loading it) into my 56 Ford pick up, and drove back to Bobs shop!

I always had one engine in the race car, and one on the bench, ready to run, including carbs, magneto & headers!

Well so much for being “Mr Good Guy”. I started 7th after winning the fast heat, and won the main, and guess who was 2nd right behind me? Allen Heath with Clawson's #97 running my other engine!

Mitch you will notice how low the engine and front left front radius rod is. That and the engine location made the car very difficult to corner, unless you really “thru it in there”. His favorite driver was Johnny Moorehouse and that was his style.

Last but not least we come to Mitch & Webby's Dad (Auto Racing Memories.com). John Guttormson, everyone mentioned before is gone, including John who died on my birthday 2/24/2011, I love this rail frame

midget #51. Believe me, they would handle if it was slick! John looks just like we all did “ready for go” as Lynn's “Uncle Blue”

used to say. Back to 1949 I was staying in Bud Hoppe's extra room and waiting for

Joe Lucy (car owner I drove for) to return from Mississippi. Bud comes in to the restaurant at 4506 Del Mar, St. Louis, MO (hot

cakes 2 eggs and coffee 35cents) and says you want to go race Owensboro, Ky., tomorrow nite? I say “great idea, but where do I get a car?”

Bud says “Lou Goss” (or Gauss?) has the #2 car and I gave him an O.K. for you to drive!”. It was a dry slick 5/8 dirt and the car was perfect! Lou knew the track very well because he lived there & been running it for years!

Two laps to go, I'm running second to Bud Hoppe (St. Louis Champ 3 years) and I “take her in there” and lose it in the marbles up high and wind up 4th! I got out of the car and said I'm sorry Lou I thought I could get him”.

He just smiled and said, “Kid” anytime you want to come down here and drive, you have the ride”.

The only other rail frame I drove was a Sprinter with a 1950 olds engine (rocket 88) I was in the top 10 at the finish, but the car was real old. Later Hoppe told me it was the former Ted Horn Car! This was down in Texas, I think Mesquite but I don't remember for sure.

Bud Hoppe 3 times SLRA Champ & good pal, he and Danny Burke were the two driver friends that gave me the “fine turning” about chassis at the race track. Note the #27 on the front bumper, (former Edelbrock #27 at Gilmore)

Brad & Mitch: I had Bob Clawson drop the engine for Johnny Morehouse, because Johnny couldn't run stagger, Bob ran even rubber on the back, even on a 1/5 mile. Johnny would spin out with stagger, and he went on to win the URA title. With the engine down he didn't have to “thro it” as hard, and the even rubber gave him a great bite coming off. This didn't change the CG like raising the back end to make it easier to “throw it” & lose it. This is why the “new” chassis builders don't believe in “RAKE”, they put the engine lower than Kurtis, Kuzma, Edmunds, etc. and shrug if you mention rake.

I called USAC to find Gary Stanton. Good Guy, “King of the Mopars” and they brushed me off, saying “he is somewhere down in Tennessee”, well I found him and he is in Nicolasville, Kentucky, still doing “Hemis”. He is listed as “Stanton Racing”, and he and Keith Black were the greatest “Hemi” people.

It's 1950 I'm living in Bell Gardens Calif. I have a shop for the race car, on Firestone Blvd, next to the corner of Firestone and Atlantic Blvd.

There were two places in Southern Calif., that the Mafia controlled the gambling. Gardena was one, and Bell Gardens was the other. They both were card playing only. (on the surface).

So, one Wednesday nite I pull into the parking lot with my '46 Ford Convertible, and being 23 years old and legal, I walk in. No jacket, or hat, but there is this Darlin' child behind the hat check counter, with a strap around her neck and a tray of cigarettes (all brands) hanging just below

her bust line. My! I really thought about buying a pack just to get a closer look at those 38's that were peering out of the low “V” neck pendelton sweater she had on.

“Hi” she says, “my name is Sylvia”, (Pasarolli) was the last name, wonder how an Italian girl could wind up in a illegal gambling joint?

“Would you like cigarettes?” she asked as she smiled at the way I was pretending to look at the tray.

“don't smoke or drink” I replied, looking up at those brown eyes for the first time.

She smiled again, and remarked “you don't smoke or drink, do you gamble?”

“Sure” say I, every Saturday night at Culver City Speedway”. “Oh” she frowned, and said “your one of those”!

“We can talk about all this after you get off say I”, and “what time can I pick you up”?

“You can't pick me up here, my Dad is in charge here, but you can find me at the “Rex” in Bell after I get off at 1 a.m.

So into the Rex I go at 1:15 a.m. and here she is, sitting in a booth showing that great smile! We talk for a few minutes and she says “I have to be home before 3 a.m. because Dad gets off then, and I better be home!”.

So out the door we went, and as we strolled over to my car, I noticed she was wearing Leotards. Fit very tight on the waist and down to slightly below mid-calf. In the parking lot we got friendly, and I hadn't even started the car yet.

She backed off and said, “can we put the top up?” I laughed and told her that I lived in a apartment just 5 miles down Atlantic Blvd. I mentioned this as I started the engine and proceeded to put the top up. I clamped the top to the windshield roof bar, and as I looked over at her, she already had one leg out of the leotards and was still smiling as she said “I'd like to see your place on my night off, but turn off the engine and slide over here!” We really fogged up the front windshield even with the side windows down! Later in the season I went to her house and met the family (including the dad! She had the “big M” in mind, and it never happened, but we sure had a lot of practice. She loved to take the left leg out of the

leotards when I was driving. Its another story about her and I at my apartment.

There’s a new dog in town and owner Julius Landry says it’s the best dog in the world! The dog is of course Sloppy Dogs on North Second Street in Bay St. Louis, an eatery

offering a new dimension in gourmet hot dogs on the Gulf Coast. Few restaurants even offer a good hot dog anymore, but the American classic is reaching new heights at this hot spot featuring quality ingredients, an innovative menu and a friendly environment.

The heart of this new dog is an all-beef, natural casing hot dog that is plainly superior to any commercially available hot dog on the Coast. The proof is in the tasting and this dog won’t let you down. The flavor is assertive, the texture firm and its big enough to fill the bun as it should.

The menu, just like the establishment, is diminutive. The building comes in at just about 164 square feet, not including patio with its umbrella topped tables outside. All of the eleven hot dogs on the menu look great, some are pretty simple like the Polish Dog that comes plain, or any way you like it, but others like the Pizza Dog and the Slaw dog are imaginative combinations that beg to be tried.

But a visit to The Sloppy Dog would not be complete without sampling some of the non-dog offerings. The Philly Cheesesteak brings the house down and the Fish Tacos, a new arrival on the Coast, is a winner with three tacos served on garlic buttered tortillas for just six dollars; add cheese if you’re feeling heady and really hungry. Ted Mangum’s ‘Little’ Red Wagon By Debbie Stringer/Today in Mississippi

Ted Mangum, of Ellisville, fabricated his own version of a Radio Flyer wagon. Built on an old ambulance chassis, the vehicle is completely street legal. Joy riding takes on a new meaning when Ted Mangum takes to the road in what may well be the world’s largest motorized Radio Flyer.

Mangum’s hand-built version of the iconic child’s wagon measures some 18 feet long and is powered by a 460 engine.

The locals wave, honk or give a thumbs-up to their neighbor when Man-gum cruises past, his cap turned backwards and a grin on his face.

As he merges onto Interstate 59, drivers slow to get a better look. Passen-gers reach for their cameras. No one, it seems, can believe their eyes: A man is waving to them from a giant Radio Flyer wagon pushing 70 mph.

Onlookers hold up their cell phones for a photo as he fuels up at a con-venience store in Ellisville. Mangum good naturedly answers their ques-tions, including the inevitable “Where’d you come up with this idea?”

“It’s unreal how much fun this is,” he says as he heads back home. Mangum, a member of Dixie Electric Power Association, has enjoyed

working on hot rods and vintage vehicles for most of his life. He taught paint and body work for 17 years at Jones County Vocational School and is active in the Magnolia Cruisers and Pine Belt Antique Auto Club.

An impressive collection of trophies and plaques attests to his skill. Many are Best in Show honors for his “sweetheart”: a 1931 Model A pickup he transformed from a “rust bucket” into a gleaming red beauty.

The success of his fabricated Radio Flyer, however, will be determined not by judges but by the reaction of the children who see it. “The whole time I was building this, I was thinking about little children,” Mangum said. He finished its construction only two months ago, but already it has made public appearances for charitable causes, including a March of Dimes bene-

fit in Mobile. And when the mother of a seriously ill 2-year-old boy said her son would like a ride after seeing the wagon on a TV newscast, Mangum jumped at the opportunity. “I’d go around the world to ride that boy in this wagon,” he said. Even Santa wants a ride. Mangum has agreed to chauffeur St. Nick in 2012 Christmas parades in Laurel, Ellisville and Petal.

Mangum got the idea to build the wagon from a couple in Alaska who built a fiberglass, two-seater version based on a small truck chassis. Mangum wanted his to accomodate more passengers, so he started with a 1987 Ford ambulance equipped with a police package.

“The ambulance only had 26,000 miles on it, so mechanically it was in excellent shape,” he said. He planned to remove only the top of the ambulance, leaving the sides intact. But that didn’t look right, he decided, so he replaced the entire body

with his own all-steel fabrication. Mangum’s flexible work schedule—he raises poultry for Wayne Farms—allowed him the time to figure out how to build his unique vehicle. The pro-

ject took about 2,000 hours to complete, he estimated. “You can just work your brain to death building something like this. I think sometimes I’ve got gears for brains anyway,” he said. Except for the constraints of tire size and vehicle width, the wagon is built to a 6:1 scale. A real Radio Flyer is 3 feet long; Mangum up-sized his to 18

feet. To mimic the original wagon’s rounded corners, Mangum split a length of large pipe four ways and welded a piece in each corner. He made a foldable

black tongue with a handle that extends 12 feet above the ground. He raised the driver’s seat about 8 inches, so he can see over the steel sides of the wagon, and installed extensions for the foot pedals. (He’s thinking

of raising the steering wheel, too.) The three bench seats for passengers are raised 12 inches from the floor and have seat belts installed. “I did several trial runs trying to work all the bugs out of it,” Mangum said. For the wheels, he used moon disc hubcaps—the kind used on drag racers—painted white and topped with a red PVC cap. Safety measures included the installation of a glass panel, tinted red to blend in, across the front of the wagon to eliminate a blind spot. A friend experienced in sign work painted the bold graphics, altered slightly from the original Radio Flyer logo, down the side of the wagon. Mangum debuted his creation at the Houston (Texas) Art Car Parade, held in May. His was one of 25 entries chosen from a field of 300 for a special

cruise around the city that included stops at children’s hospitals and schools. When a large group of deaf children posed for pictures with Mangum’s wagon, “that was a thrilling thing to see,” he said.

“If I’d have known that it was going to be as much fun as it is, I’d have built this thing 20 years ago,” he continued. “I have a ball every time I take it out.”
