There’s a reason why motorcycle and car enthusiasts from around the world flock to Southeastern Ohio: rolling hills and open, well-maintained roads make this region the perfect test track. Nestled within these hills is the town of Athens, an eclectic community where sustainability and imagination are more traditions than aspirations. It’s no wonder then that the King Midget was created in Athens. Like the Midget, Athens is equal parts fun and funky, yet innovative and resourceful.
This creative, entrepreneurial spirit lives on in the county’s thriv-ing arts and music scene, its local food culture and its cutting-edge approach to alternative energy development. An easy drive from Columbus, Athens is surrounded by world-class hiking and biking trails complemented by the 21-mile Hockhocking Adena Bikeway. Regardless of whether you ride, drive or bike, the wind-ing hills are challenge, but your reward is the rich rural landscape topped off with a 30-Mile Meal and a cold, local brew at the end of your ride.
Overview: Up, up, and away to the top of Ohio’s Windy 9 and gaze upon the “Rim of the World” along the famous Route 78. Wayne National Forest, Burr Oak State Park, and the Stockport Mill highlight one of America’s most popular rides! Don’t forget to check out the last hand-operated lock in the United States at the Stockport Lock and Dam.
Overview: Something for every skill level and majestic rolling hills are showcased along this challenging trek as you get a glimpse of State Route 555, better known as The Triple Nickle. Breezing through Wayne National Forest, Stroud’s Run State Park, and Gifford State Forest is always a bonus!
Overview: Head south along the Ohio River Scenic Byway for an amazing glide through river towns of yesteryear. Cross the mighty Ohio to spot the “Mothman” in Point Pleasant, WV, or take a break riverside at the Gallipolis City Park before turning north toward more of Appalachia’s breathtaking countryside.
Overview: Old US 33 takes riders back in time by navigating the main historic thor-oughfare connecting Athens to the Ohio River. Fill the belly and the bike in Pomeroy before heading deep into Ohio’s Appalachian backcountry. Hint, Hint … the Ohio Pawpaw Festival at Lake Snowden in Albany, OH, is in September!
Overview: Onward through Wayne National Forest into the famous Hocking Hills region to discover one of America’s most popular eco-adventure destina-tions. Take your time along the Hocking Hills Scenic Byway and explore a variety of unique, seasonal experiences—enjoying two state forests—Hocking and Zaleski!
Overview: Celebrate the Hocking Valley’s coal heritage with a tour through the Little Cities of Black Diamonds. Turn-of-the-century upstart mining towns shimmer along this jewel of a ride. Toss in the Wayne National Forest and Nelsonville’s Historic Square for a most unforgettable run.
Overview: It may be difficult keeping your eyes on the road while flowing alongside the Hocking River to its confluence with the Ohio. Take in some great examples of man vs. nature—modern engineering marvels are on full display as you pass many Ohio River locks and dams. Upon arrival in the biker-friendly town of Pomeroy, riders are treated to the region’s best riverscapes and feel the influence of America’s second largest river!
Overview: No attractions or lunch stops—just the motorcycle and OH 555—we’ll let “The Triple Nickle” take it from here …
Overview: “The Zipper” boasts unique versatility and a perfect snapshot of the true Ohio riding experience. This route has been strategically designed to make the most of a “short time to kill” or an all-day, leisurely-paced excursion. Looking for a quick out and back? Want to take it slow ex-ploring Lake Hope State Park, Zaleski State Forest, and a stop along the Underground Railroad in the village of Albany? Or, maybe somewhere in between? The choices are endless!
