That portion of the sensor is now much warmer than when the intruder wasn’t there. As the intruder moves, so does the hot spot on the surface of the sensor. This moving hot spot causes the electronics connected to the sensor to de-energize the relay, operating its contacts, thereby activating the fixture and turning on the lights. The greater the temperature differential between the ambient temperature and the object entering the field of view is essential for optimum performance of the PIR sensor. A PIR fixture that is operating in a higher ambient temperature will be less likely to detect objects entering its field of view because the temperature differential is less than if it was operating in a cooler environment. MOTION SENSOR LIGHTING PASSIVE INFARED TECHNOLOGY A Passive Infrared sensor (PIR sensor) is an electronic device which measures infrared light radiating from objects in its field of view. Apparent motion is detected when an infrared source with one temperature, such as a human, passes in front of an infrared source with another temperature, such as a wall. The term “passive” in this instance means the PIR does not emit energy of any type but merely accepts incoming infrared radiation. SENSOR & ELECTRONICS To make a sensor that can detect a human being, you need to make the sensor sensitive to the temperature of a human body. Humans, having a skin temperature of about 93 degrees Farenheit, radiate infrared energy with a wavelength between 9 and 10 micrometers. Therefore, the sensors used in the MS series have a sensitivity range of 8 to 12 micrometers. LENS FUNCTIONALITY The specially designed lenses used in our MS series are equally as important as the sensor. We offer two wide field view lens options of either 180 degrees or 270 degrees. These wide field views are possible because infrared energy is a form of light, meaning it can be focused and bent with the use of our specially designed Fresnel pattern that is molded inside our lenses. The lenses also help prevent the intrusion of dust and insects which could potentially obscure or block the field of view of the sensor. > ONICS S SENSOR & E & ELECTR CTRO Sensors INSTALLATION TIPS: keep in mind that the detection fields created from the Fresnel lens are most effective when an intruder walks through the fields not directly towards one. position for your motion sensor not to place it by any air supply, returns or exhaust vents as the change in temperature around the fixture could cause false alarms. mounting height of 8’. HOW THE SENSOR WORKSA person entering the monitored area is detected when the infrared energy emitted from the intruder’s body is focused by the Fresnel lens and then overlaps a section of the sensor; which had previously been looking at a much cooler part of the protected area.
