Join hundreds of other Anchorage riders for the 15th annual Bike to Work Day, Friday May 17th from 6:00-9:00 a.m. The PCA will have a treat station set up by the Davenport Ball Fields along the Chester Creek Trail, with coffee and cookies to keep the bikers fueled and happy. We’ll also have membership packets available to promote the Club. This is a popular event that has seen upwards of 4,000 riders in the past couple of years, so we’re hoping to see lots of smiling faces that morning and share the benefits of a PCA membership. PCA P IPEL INE NEWS, MAY 2019

It’s the event you’ve been waiting for – the official opening of the PCA Patio, Thursday May 2nd from 5:00-9:00 p.m. Some of you attended last year’s end of summer party once the patio finally opened. This year, we are ready to enjoy a full summer of fun in the sun.

Kick it off with an evening of Cinco de Mayo themed food and drinks and live music with favorite local band, Fish n’ Chips (also known as Silver Train). The band features Patrick Ryan on guitar and vocals and Bill Yeagle on harmonies and bass. The playlist is extensive, covering everything from fifties music, blues, bluegrass, country, rock and Irish music. The band also takes most requests, so come ready to sing, dance or tap your toes to the sounds of this fun, upbeat group, sure to rock your night away. Reservations are NOT required for this event. Just come to the Club and celebrate the start of summer on the PCA Patio!

We are thrilled for our members to be able to enjoy the first full summer on the PCA Patio. As with any new venture, it’s natural to set some standards. First, members must understand that the Patio will only be open weather permitting and will offer the same service, hours and menu as the dining room and lounge. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the facts of our new addition.

1. How many people does the patio seat? The PCA Patio can seat a total of 50 people. We’ll have 10 tables with 40 chairs for dining, plus sofas and cozy chairs for enjoying a drink or two around the fire pits.

2. Can I smoke on the patio? No, smoking of any kind is not permitted on the patio. You are also not allowed to bring pets.

3. Can I make reservations for the patio? No, seating on the patio will be first come, first served, just like in the lounge

Let’s take it outside...

4. Could I rent the patio for a private event? The patio will only be available for private events on the weekend, with a $2,400 minimum charge, plus whatever food and drinks you would accrue during your event. To rent the patio, please contact our Events Coordinator, Kristy Kemp at [email protected].

5. How do I access the patio? If you wish to sit outside, please see the hostess at the front desk. If there is a private event in progress, you will need to enter the patio through the outside gate. To get there, exit out of our lobby, take a right, walk a few paces down the sidewalk, and the gate will be on the righthand side. Please note that you may not carry alcoholic beverages out to our sidewalk, therefore, please refrain from ordering until you are seated on the patio.

Cannery ClubStep back in time to the start of Alaska’s commercial fishing industry at The Cannery Club and Lodge nestled above the south bank of the Kenai River. Planning a fishing trip this summer? The Cannery Club and Lodge is the perfect spot to take a break. And if you need to work in between river trips, the club offers project services, meeting areas, transportation access – including a helipad - lodging, concierge and full-service meals. The club also hosts various events throughout the summer such as concerts, wine tastings and notable guest speakers.

The property has a rich history, which began in 1912 as the Libby, McNeil and Libby cannery. The operation prospered for several years until it was destroyed by a fire in 1921. It was then rebuilt and sold to Columbia Wards in 1950, becoming Wards Cove Packing. Once a makeshift village during fishing season, the site offered housing, cooking and laundry facilities for cannery workers. It also provided warehouse space, dock facilities, machinery and equipment for canning operations until it closed in 1998.

Envisioning the potential as a transportation and logistics hub, the property caught the eye of Founder and CEO of PRL Logistics, Ron Hyde who wished to expand his company’s services to the Kenai Peninsula and Cook Inlet. Hyde realized that he could maintain the old cannery’s original charm while transforming it into the modern multi-use facility it is today. Dine from the club’s varied menu, which offers a wide selection that changes every 4 to 6 weeks, take advantage of the club’s lodging, river access, spa services, special events, flight seeing tours, and more. The Cannery Club has a lot to offer. Discover this unique club for yourself during your next visit to the Kenai Peninsula.

It’s one hour with networking, lunch and guest speaker, fellow PCA Member and recipient of a 2019 Top 40 Under 40 award, Mr. Peter Caltagirone, Special Assistant to the Commissioner for the Alaska Department of Natural Resources.

He also served as counsel to DNR on development of the Alaska LNG project, providing advice on proposed legislation and regulations.

After briefly working with AOGA as a Regulatory and Legal Affairs Manager, Mr. Caltagirone was recruited by DNR Commissioner Corri Feigi to work as her Special Assistant. He holds a bachelor’s degree in both government and economics from Claremont McKenna College and a law degree from Villanova University School of Law, with license to practice in five states.

PCA Summer Golf Tournament

July 11 & 12Let’s be real.

When I joined the Club, I was amazed at the fact that our tournament was held over 2 days and accommodated twice as many people as any other tournament that I had ever been involved with. Moreover, until about 2 years ago it sold out in one day and by the time that The Masters gave away another green jacket in early April the tournament was operating on a waiting list. Astounding.

It’s not the Tournament Committee’s mission to sell out this year – it is our mission to create an environment and experience that will set us up to sell out next year.

So how do we do this? You don’t have a lot of time, so I’ll be brief:

• Expand the tournament committee and bring in new ideas and enthusiasm. (Done.)

• Increase sponsorships to provide more perks to the players (i.e. higher value player gift, etc.) and to showcase who the industry players are in our community who are stronger than ever and who support the overall mission of the Club in its year-around efforts to provide a forum for camaraderie and networking.

o Several incentives have been put into place this year – contact me, anyone on the golf committee, or the front desk at the Club for details.

• Automate the process. It’s 2019 and I felt that providing an effortless way to enter a team or to become a sponsor would encourage participation. It’s a platform that most everyone is very comfortable with and it’s working. Visit https://app.eventcaddy.com/events/pca-golf-tournament to find out all about available sponsorships or to sign up as a foursome or individual player.

• Add a Low Gross Award. In past years the PCA was the place for the low gross players in the State to come to compete and we want to bring back the competition. The Club Champion will never go away, but this year we have added a Low Gross Award which will include a package valued at $1,000 – including an exemption to play in the 2020 PCA tournament.

• Accommodate everyone. New this year is a mini-tournament, which will be a scramble format on the Hill Course on Friday. I’ve heard comments over the years that it’s sometimes difficult to schedule 2 days away from the office and/or to find clients & guests whose schedules can accommodate a 2-day event. Problem solved. The one-day scramble-format event will be scored separately from the stroke-play event, but the players will enjoy all the same amenities. A secondary benefit will be faster rounds for everyone.

In closing, I hope you have come away with the understanding that it is the golf committee’s intent to elevate the tournament experience this year and we didn’t even get into everything that will be happening at the banquet! (Don’t forget that every player is entitled to bring 1 guest to enjoy the banquet but no children please, it is a 21+ event.)

Please consider supporting our efforts this year by becoming a sponsor to show your support of the Club and to remind the community that industry is strong. We may not have a full field of golfers, but we have all of the same base expenses and that tent isn’t cheap! I’ll make sure that you are noticed…
