Pentecost

40 Years of Priesthood I know this might sound corny, but the fact of the matter is that my priesthood is really not about me. We know St. Peter, the Apostles, the Gospel writers, St. Paul and the Saints not because they wrote au-tobiographies about themselves but rather spoke about their life with Jesus Christ. For 2000 years there have been priests whose lives mir-rored to the centuries their vision, love and service to the one and only Messiah – Jesus. And the priest today is and is to be no different. Ven-erable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen spoke in his autobiography on this same point at the very beginning of his book ‘Treasure In Clay’:

‘St. Paul wrote to the Corinthians about himself and other apostles of the Lord as being no better than ‘pots’ of earthenware to con-tain the treasure. The example may have been the clay lamps in which oil was put to hold light. I have chosen this text to indicate the contrast between the nobility of the vocation to the priesthood and the frailty of the human person which houses it. We have the awesome power to act in Persona Christi (in the Person of Christ), that is, to forgive the most horrible of sins, to transplant the Cross of Calvary to the altar, to give divine birth to thousands of children at the baptismal font, and to usher souls on deathbeds to the Kingdom of Heaven.’

There were many influences in my life which made me desire to be a priest and to respond to that call from the Lord which is a pull from above rather than a push from below leaving no man able to humanly choose it; he must be chosen. I felt that in a very myste-rious way as far back as I can remember and always had a keen sense of the presence and reality of God. My family life fostered that sense through a lived Catholic life which saw our family in church every single Sunday. Catholic education was also instrumen-tal in my faith-formation for, in those days, the Sisters of St. Joseph at St. Edward’s and the Sisters of Loretto at St. Paul the Apostle(Pine Lawn) laid a foundation of study and prayer that I still hold to. The Dominican Sisters of Sparkill also were formative, as I watched my sister Sr. Mary Ann and others live out their call. The priests I saw every Sunday also helped to form the image of priesthood in my young mind as I witnessed their love, commitment and the strangeness of their lives in the way they dressed, the garments they wore in church and the fact that they weren’t married and had no kids. My mother often commented, “How lucky priests are!”

Pope Paul VI, in one of his annual Holy Thursday letters, wrote of the priesthood as a coming to understand the reality and presence of Christ that is beyond himself and yet so presently and visibly near: ‘As we gaze upon Christ at the Last Supper, as he becomes for us the ‘bread that is broken,’ as he stoops down in humble service at the feet of the Apostles, how can we (priests) not experi-ence, together with Peter, the same feeling of unworthiness in the face of the great gift we receive.’ Celebrating 40 years of priesthood, I am so grateful for the many who have supported me and loved Jesus with me on my journeys, parishes, and schools. I have loved the call to priesthood and the privilege I have known in working out my service to the Lord in this tremendous and mysterious way which has been, as St. Paul said, ‘grace upon grace.’ Thank you, Lord, and thank you all. Please continue to pray for me. (Fr. Gene)

THE PRIEST by Karl Rahner My friends, accept us as we are: The priest is not an angel sent from Heaven,

he is a man chosen from among you, a member of the Church, a Christian.

Remaining man and Christian, he begins to speak to you the Word of God.

This Word is not his own. No, he comes to you because,

God has told him to proclaim His Word. Perhaps he has not entirely understood it himself.

Perhaps he gets it wrong at times. But, he believes, and despite his fears he knows that he must

communicate God’s Word to you. For must not some one of us say something about God,

about eternal life, about the majesty of grace in our sanctified being; must not some one of us speak of sin,

and the judgment and the mercy of God? So, dear friends, pray for him. Carry him, so that he might be able to sustain others by bringing them the mystery of God's love, revealed in Jesus Christ.

The SVS dinner auction committee is looking for volunteers to help with this year’s auction scheduled for July 28. This is the school’s main fundraiser, so we need all hands on deck to make this a success. There are plenty of opportunities ranging from decorations to raffles to silent auction to clean-up. This is also a great oppor-tunity for older kids to get Christian service hours. Help before the auction, work a short shift, or work all night – you choose! It’s really a lot of fun! Sign-up sheets are in the school lobby, or you can call JoAnn Struckhoff at 314-330-1342 for more information.

Dutzow Community Club is looking for a couple of folks that could work the concession stand for WHS Baseball games 2:30-4:30pm on game days. If interested, please contact Nick Ober-mark 636-368-1366

“There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are dif-ferent workings but the same God who pro-duces all of them in everyone.” – 1 CORINTHIANS 12:4-6

All of us are blessed, regardless of our own individual circum-stances; God has given each of us many gifts. How we use those gifts is our gift back to God. For God’s plan to work, each must do what we are called to do and guess what – we are not all called to do the same thing!

Pentecost ends the Easter sea-son and we usually take down the Easter decorations after the last Mass. However, we have Fr. Gene’s 40th in the afternoon, and the following wee a Baptism, so we will be taking down the pool and the flowers after the last Mass on Sunday, June 3. Even

though we will be moving into Ordinary Time during the week, we have 2 major feasts the next 2 weekends: the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity next weekend and the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) the following weekend. So, it will be nice to have decorations up for those feasts.
