…Grand Arcanum,…that secret whose revelation would overturn Earth and Heaven. Let no one expect us

to give them its explanation! He who passes behind the veil that hides this mystery, understands that it is in

its very nature inexplicable, and that it is death to those who win it by surprise, as well as to him who

reveals it.

This secret is the Royalty of the Sages, the Crown of the Initiate whom we seeredescend victorious from the summit of Trials, in the fine allegory of Cebes. The Grand Arcanun1 makes him master of gold and the light, which are at bottom the same thing,he has solved the problem of the quadrature of the circle, he directs the perpetualmovement, and he possesses the philosophical stone. Here the Adepts will understandus. There is neither interruption in the toil of nature, nor gap in her work. The Harmoniesof Heaven correspond to those of Earth, and the Eternal Life accomplishes its evolutionsin accordance with the same laws as the life of a dog. "God has arranged all things byweight, number, and measure," says the Bible; and this luminous doctrine was also thatof Plato.

Masonry, like all the Religions, all the Mysteries, Hermeticism and Alchemy, conceals its

secrets from all except the Adepts and Sages, or the Elect, and uses false explanations

and misinterpretations of its symbols to mislead those who deserve only to be misled; to

conceal the Truth, which it calls Light, from tl1em, and todraw them away from it. Truth isnot for those who are unworthy or unable to receive it, or would pervert it. So GodHimself incapacitates many men, by color-blindness, to distinguish colors, and leads themasses away from the highest Truth, giving them the power to attain only so much of itas it is profitable to them to know. Every age has had a religion suited to its capacity.The Teachers, even of Christianity, are, in general, the most ignorant of the true meaningof that which they teach. There is no book of which so little is known as the Bible. Tomost who read it, it is as incomprehensible as the Sohar.

So Masonry jealously conceals its secrets, and intentionally leads conceited interpretersastray. There is no sight under the sun more pitiful and ludicrous at once, than thespectacle of the Prestons and the Webbs, not to mention the later incarnations of Dullness and Commonplace, undertaking to "explain" the old symbols of Masonry, andadding to and "improving" them, or inventing new ones.

It is for each individual Mason to discover the secret of Masonry,by reflection upon its symbols and a wise consideration andanalysis of what is said and done in the work. Masonry does notinculcate her truths. She states them, once and briefly; or hintsthem, perhaps, darkly; or interposes a cloud between them andeyes that would be dazzled by them. "Seek, and ye shall find,"knowledge and the truth.

Albert Pike associates this Great Secret with the discovery of the Alchemists “Philosopher’s Stone.”



The philosopher's stone is a legendary substance, allegedly capable of turning

inexpensive metals into gold. It was sometimes believed to be an elixir of life, useful for

rejuvenation and possibly for achieving immortality. For a long time, it was the most

sought-after goal in Western alchemy. In the view of spiritual alchemy, making the

philosopher's stone would bring enlightenment upon the maker and conclude the Great

Work. It is also known by several other names, such as 'materia prima.'

Azoth

Azoth was considered to be a 'universal medicine' or 'universal solvent' sought in

alchemy, its symbol was the Caduceus (the rod of Hermes) and so the term, which being

originally a term for an occult formula sought by alchemists much like thephilosopher's stone, became a poetic word for the element Mercury.

The term was considered by occultist Aleister Crowley to represent a unity of beginning

& ending by tying together the first and last letters of the alphabets of antiquity;

A/Alpha/Alef (first character of Roman, Greek & Hebrew), Z (final character in latin), O

as Omega (final character in Greek) and Th as Tau (final character in Hebrew).

In this way permeation & totality of beginning and end was considered the supreme



wholeness and thus the universal synthesis of opposites as a 'cancellation' (i.e. solvent)

or cohesion (i.e. medicine), and in such a way is similar to the philosophical "absolute"

of Hegel's dialectic. Crowley further made reference in his works refering to Azoth as

"the fluid."

Panacea (Medicine)

The panacea (pan-ah-SEE-ah), named after the Greek goddess of healing Panacea, was

supposed to be a remedy that would cure all diseases and prolong life indefinitely. It

was sought by the alchemists as a connection to the elixir of life and the philosopher's

stone, a mythical substance which would enable the transmutation of common metals

into gold.

As the works of more of the alchemists have come to light, it becomes clear that the

philosopher's stone wasn't really a stone at all—even though it is always referred to as

such. Sometimes the catalyst of transmutation is described as a divine child, an angel, a

dragon, an elixir, a tincture, or an as-yet unknown chemical compound.

Many alchemists began to consider that somehow the philosopher's stone was not athing at all, but a system of knowledge. Once the alchemist truly perceived the reality

that lay behind the symbols, he would achieve an intellectual and spiritual level

wherein he would become one with the power that existed within the mysterious goal for

which he searched so long. Once he understood what the philosopher' stone

represented, he would have found it at last—and he would have become one with it.

Many scholars have since insisted that the true alchemists sought not to turn base

metals into gold, but to transform the dense material of their physical bodies into a



spiritually evolved immaterial entity. In this perspective, the philosopher's stone

becomes the Holy Spirit that mystically transmutes humans into true manifestations of

God on Earth.

The Second Temple was destroyed by Roman Empire troops under general Titus in 70

CE. This second Temple had been desecrated by Pompey, when he entered it after

taking Jerusalem in 63 BCE. According to Josephus (living at the Court of the Roman

Emperor), Pompey did not remove anything from the Temple or its treasury. He did,

however, massacre the Priests who attempted to block his entry to the sanctuary.

"Of the Jews there fell twelve thousand, but of the Romans very few.... and no small

enormities were committed about the temple itself, which, in former ages, had been

inaccessible, and seen by none; for Pompey went into it, and not a few of those that were

with him also, and saw all that which it was unlawful for any other men to see but only

for the high priests. There were in that temple the golden table, the holy candlestick,

and the pouring vessels, and a great quantity of spices; and besides these there were

among the treasures two thousand talents of sacred money: yet did Pompey touch

nothing of all this, on account of his regard to religion; and in this point also he acted in

a manner that was worthy of his virtue. The next day he gave order to those that had the

charge of the temple to cleanse it, and to bring what offerings the law required to God;and restored the high priesthood to Hyrcanus, both because he had been useful to him in

Return now, with us, to the Degrees of the BlueMasonry, and for your last lesson, receive theexplanation of one of their Symbols.You see upon the altar of those Degrees the SQUARE andthe COMPASS, and you remember how they lay upon thealtar in each Degree.The SQUARE is an instrument adapted for plane surfacesonly, and therefore appropriate to Geometry, or measurement of the Earth, which appears to be, and was

by the Ancients supposed to be, a plane. The COMPASS isan instrument that has relation to spheres andspherical surfaces, and is adapted to sphericaltrigonometry, or that branch of mathematics which dealswith the Heavens and the orbits of the planetarybodies. The SQUARE, therefore, is a natural and appropriate

Symbol of this Earth and the things that belong to it,



are of it, or concern it. The Compass is an equally

natural and appropriate Symbol of the Heavens, and of all celestial things and celestial natures.


The Hermaphroditic figure is the Symbol of the double

nature anciently assigned to the Deity, as Generator and Producer, as BRAHM and MAYA among the Aryans,Osiris and Isis among the Egyptians. As the Sun wasmale, so the Moon was female; and Isis was both thesister and the wife of Osiris. The Compass, therefore,is the Hermetic Symbol of the Creative Deity, and theSquare of the productive Earth or Universe.From the Heavens come the spiritual and immortalportion of man; from the Earth his material and mortalportion. The Hebrew Genesis says that YEHOUAH formedman of the dust of the Earth, and breathed into his

nostrils the breath of life. Through the sevenplanetary spheres, represented by the Mystic Ladder of the Mithriac Initiations, and it by that which Jacobsaw in his dream (not with three, but with sevensteps), the Souls, emanating from the Deity, descended,to be united to their human bodies; and through thoseseven spheres they must re-ascend, to return to their origin and home in the bosom of the Deity.The COMPASS, therefore, as the Symbol of the Heavens,represents the spiritual, intellectual, and moralportion of this double nature of humanity; and the

SQUARE, as the Symbol of the Earth, its material,sensual, and baser portion. Solve et coagula

Solve et Coagula, or "solution and coagulation." This motto derives from Alchemy. In

Alchemy solve or solutio refers to the breaking down of elements and coaguala refers to

their coming together, in the process of transmuting base metal into gold or arriving at

the Philosopher’s stone.

Solve et Coagula

Since the earliest times, philosophers have been searching for the underlying patterns

of order. Having no ambition to explain everything, I want to point out one omnipresent

mechanism. We find it in Spiritual development, we find it in psychotherapy and we find

it- yes, even in quantum physics. In the latter understanding, there is a well known

duality of wave and particle (light exists as a wave and a particle at the same time,

modern physics tells us). A wave has no limits, it spreads everywhere and we can't

measure it. In the moment we try to measure it, or to interact with it consciously, it

disappears everywhere except at the point of observation i.e measurement. On that



point it changes into a particle which has particular characteristics.

But long before quantum physics, alchemy pointed to its most important operation:

Solve et Coagula. "Solve" or "solutio" refers to the breaking down of elements and

"Coagula" refers to their coming together. In the process of transmuting base metal into

gold or arriving at the Philosopher's stone, this contained both literal and hidden

meaning. Esoterically, "solve" referred to the dissolving of hardened positions,negative states of body and mind , thereby dissolving and vanishing negative energetic

charge. "Coagula" referred to the coagulation of dispersed elements into an integrated

whole, representing the new synthesis. Solve et Coagula expresses transmutation from

base to a finer state, the perpetual goal of spiritual growth and human evolution.

Thus in the widest meaning of the term, Solve means dissolve, disperse, dilute.

Coagulate, by definition, is "to gather or form into a mass or group".

So, the real meaning of these three words ("Solve et Coagula") is the formula that the

alchemists used to effect this transformation. It could be described as a process where

something is broken down to its elements, a process which produces energy that

compels reconstitution in a purer form.

777, the "flaming sword," is the Kabbalistic path representing the descent of the

Shekinah or Matronit (also represented by the downward triangle of the occult

hexagram or "Star of David").

A Fisherman with a wife and 3 children. The Fisherman casts his net 4 times a day (No

more than four). It is interesting to compare The Fisherman to Jesus.

First Cast

The first cast he was not able to pull up the net. He dove into the water and found a

“dead jackass.”

Second Cast

The Fisherman makes a second cast in the name of Allah (God). The Fisherman pulled

up a very heavy earthen pitcher of sand and mud. The Fisherman discards the pitcher.

Third Cast

The Fisherman finds potsherds and broken glass.

Fourth Cast

Then raising his eyes heavenwards he said, “O my God! verily Thou wottest that I cast

not my net each day save four times; the third is done and as yet Thou hast vouchsafed

me nothing. So this time, O my God, deign give me my daily bread.” Then, havingcalled on Allah’s name, he again threw his net and waited its sinking and settling;

whereupon he haled at it but could not draw it in for that it was entangled at the bottom.

He cried out in his vexation “There is no Majesty and there is no Might save in Allah!”

The Fisherman finds a cucumber shaped jar of yellow copper evidently full of

something “whose mouth was made fast with a leaden cap, stamped with the seal ring

of our Lord Sulayman (Solomon) son of David”. Seeing this the Fisherman rejoiced and

said, “If I sell it in the brass bazar ’tis worth ten golden diners.” He shook it and finding

it heavy continued, “Would to Heaven I knew what is herein. But I must and will open it



and look to its contents and store it in my bag and sell it in the brass market.” And

taking out a knife he worked at the lead till he had loosened it from the jar; then he laid

the cup on the ground and shook the vase to pour out whatever might be inside. He

found nothing in it; whereat he marvelled with an exceeding marvel. But presently there

came forth from the jar a smoke which spired heavenwards into aether (whereat he

again marvelled with mighty marvel), and which trailed along earth’s surface till

presently, having reached its full height, the thick vapour condensed, and became anIfrit, huge of bulk, whose crest touched the clouds while his feet were on the ground. His

head was as a dome, his hands like pitchforks, his legs long as masts and his mouth big

as a cave; his teeth were like large stones, his nostrils ewers, his eyes two lamps and his

look was fierce and lowering.

Very interesting, it seems the Fisherman has fished up the container of Satan stamped

with the Seal of Solomon. Upon opening, smoke arises and a beast emerges. Satan is a

Jinni (Genie) contained in a bottle or lamp or bottomless pit or prison of some type.

Now when the Fisherman saw the Ifrit his side muscles quivered, his teeth chattered,

his spittle dried up and he became blind about what to do. Upon this the Ifrit looked athim and cried, “There is no god but the God, and Sulayman is the prophet of God;”

presently adding, “O Apostle of Allah, slay me not; never again will I gainsay thee in

word nor sin against thee in deed.” Quoth the Fisherman, “O Marid, diddest thou say,

Sulayman the Apostle of Allah; and Sulayman is dead some thousand and eight hundred

years ago, and we are now in the last days of the world! What is thy story, and what is thy

account of thyself, and what is the cause of thy entering into this cucurbit?” Now when

the Evil Spirit heard the words of the Fisherman, quoth he; “There is no god but the God:

be of good cheer, O Fisherman!” Quoth the Fisherman, “Why biddest thou me to be of

good cheer?” and he replied, “Because of thy having to die an ill death in this very

hour.” Said the Fisherman, “Thou deservest for thy good tidings the withdrawal of

Heaven’s protection, O thou distant one! Wherefore shouldest thou kill me and what

thing have I done to deserve death, I who freed thee from the jar, and saved thee from

the depths of the sea, and brought thee up on the dry land?” Replied the Ifrit, “Ask of me

only what mode of death thou wilt die, and by what manner of slaughter shall I slay

thee.” Rejoined the Fisherman, “What is my crime and wherefore such retribution?”

Quoth the Ifrit, “Hear my story, O Fisherman!” and he answered, “Say on, and be brief

in thy saying, for of very sooth my life breath is my nostrils.” Thereupon quoth the Jinni,

“Know, that I am one among the heretical Jann and I sinned against Sulayman, David

son (on the twain be peace!) I together with the famous Sakhr al Jinni;” whereupon the

Prophet sent his minister, Asaf son of Barkhiya, to seize me; and this Wazir brought me

against my will and led me in bonds to him (I being downcast despite my nose) and he

placed me standing before him like a suppliant. When Sulayman saw me, he took

refuge with Allah and bade me embrace the True Faith and obey his behests; but I

refused, so sending for this cucurbit he shut me up therein, and stopped it over with

lead whereon he impressed the Most High Name, and gave his orders to the Jann whocarried me off, and cast me into the midmost of the ocean. There I abode an hundred

years, during which I said in my heart, “Whoso shall release me, him will I enrich for

ever and ever.” But the full century went by and, when no one set me free, I entered

upon the second five score saying, “Whoso shall release me, for him I will open the

hoards of the earth.” Still no one set me free and thus four hundred years passed away.

Then quoth I, “Whoso shall release me, for him will I fulfil three wishes.” Yet no one set

me free. Thereupon I waxed wroth with exceeding wrath and said to myself, “Whoso

shall release me from this time forth, him will I slay and I will give him choice of what

death he will die; and now, as thou hast released me, I give thee full choice of deaths.”



The Fisherman, hearing the words of the Ifrit, said, “O Allah! the wonder of it that I have

not come to free thee save in these days!” adding, “Spare my life, so Allah spare shine;

and slay me not, lest Allah set one to slay thee.” Replied the Contumacious One, “There

is no help for it; die thou must; so ask me by way of boon what manner of death thou wilt

die.” Albeit thus certified the Fisherman again addressed the Ifrit saying, “Forgive me

this my death as a generous reward for having freed thee;” and the Ifrit, “Surely I would

not slay thee save on account of that same release.” “O Chief of the Ifrits,” said theFisherman, “I do thee good and thou requitest me with evil!

The first thing out of the Jinni’s mouth is the declaration that Sulayman (Solomon) is the

prophet of God. Sulayman being dead 1800 years ago and that we are in the last days of

the world. The Jinni offers the Fisherman a wish of choosing how to die. The Jinni

declares that it is among the heretical Jann and that it sinned against Sulayman. The

Jinni declares an alliance with Sakhr al Janni. The Janni refused to obey True Faith

(God) and was locked in the cucumber jar. The jar was sealed with the Most High Name

(The Name of God). The Jinni explains how Jann carried the jar and threw it in the

midmost of the ocean. The most important part of this, is the Jinni’s dark pact.

The Jinni’s Dark Pact

After waiting in the bronze jar for:

* 100 years: The Jinni grants the releaser eternal riches

* 200 years: The Jinni grants the releaser the hoards of the earth

* 400 years: The Jinni grants the releaser 3 wishes

* Not specified: The Jinni grants the releaser the choice of how to die.

The Fisherman quickly takes the leaden cap with the Seal of Solomon and traps the

Jinni. The Fisherman says:
