This Tuesday, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, Pope Francis will open the "Holy Door" in Saint Peter's Basilica, symbolically opening the Jubilee Year of Mercy. In today's scriptures, Baruch confidently anticipates God's healing of the brokenness of humanity, and Paul sees God bringing our discernment, knowledge, and love to fulfillment. Our experience of life and of ourselves can make such prophecies seem wildly optimistic, even hopelessly naïve. Pope Francis challenges us to live this Jubilee Year as a graced time, when God's mercy reawakens our enthusiasm to live our baptismal call as gospel people, our hope renewed and ourselves recommitted to selfless charity. Notice that in Luke's Gospel today, God bypasses the religious elite and politically powerful to speak to a humble believer in the barren desert the saving word that will transform history. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Stand on the heights, Jerusalem; see your children rejoicing that they are remembered by God. A merciful and just God leads Israel in joy (Baruch 5:1-9). Psalm — The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy (Psalm 126). Second Reading — May your love increase in knowledge to discern what is valuable that you may be blameless for the day of Christ (Philippians 1:4-6, 8-11). Gospel — John proclaims a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. All flesh shall see the salvation of God (Luke 3:1-6). Stewardship Reflection on Lectionary Readings Based upon the readings for this Second Sunday in Advent, we can almost summarize them from the First Reading to the Gospel, as Joy in the Coming; Thanksgiving for the Coming; and Repentance and Preparation for the Coming. That also more or less recaps what Advent is all about for us as Catholics. We are preparing both for the birth of Christ, His arrival at Christmas, as well as making an effort to prepare for the Lord’s Second Coming. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church(#524) “When the Church celebrates the liturgy of Advent each year, she makes present this ancient expectancy of the Messiah, for by sharing in the long preparation for the Savior’s first coming, the faithful renew their ardent desire for His second coming.” On this Second Sunday of Advent our First Reading comes to us from the Book of Baruch. Considered a major prophet by the Church, Baruch was the assistant to the prophet Jeremiah. His Book is among the shortest in the Bible, Old or New Testament, with only 6 chapters and a few more than 200 words. Our particular reading for the day is part of an ode, a poem, written to extol the predicted saving grace of the Messiah. There are actually four different poems in this chapter of Baruch, and each opens with the declaration “Take courage.” Baruch, like his fellow prophets tells us of the coming of Christ and how that will indeed be our “saving grace.” Note the poetic nature of this passage as exemplified by these verses: “The forests and every fragrant kind of tree have overshadowed Israel at God’s command; for God is leading Israel in joy by the light of his glory.” Christmas is a time for poems and songs.

Baruch tells us that Christ is coming. St. Paul in his letter to the Philippians reminds us of the importance of prayer and of his confidence in us and the Philippians: “I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus.” The “day of Christ Jesus” is what the purpose of our Advent preparation is. Just as Paul “prays constantly” we, too, must find times and ways of praying — every day multiple times, if possible. It is through prayer that the Lord becomes a key part of our lives. The “good work” to which Paul makes reference will not and cannot be entirely and perfectly completed until Christ comes again. In the meantime prayer and thanksgiving are paramount. This is a time for us to seek the “fruit of righteousness” that Paul sees as necessary for us to be good stewards and Disciples of Christ. St. John the Baptist is the harbinger of Jesus Christ. In theCatechism of the Catholic Church (#523) we are told “St. John the Baptist is the Lord’s immediate precursor or forerunner, sent to prepare his way.” On this Second Sunday of Advent, if we have not already, we need to also prepare for the way of Christ. John the Baptist had one consistent message and that had to do with “repentance.” Repentance is another important phase of our Advent journeys. For St. John the Baptist repentance is not an attitude, not something where we feel remorse in our hearts; it is something active. It involves conversion and change. What are we doing right now in our lives to pursue life differently? How are we working to make stewardship an important part of our understanding and our lifestyle? There are many ways we can alter the direction of our lives so that we serve more and better. This desire to serve needs to be done as part of our preparation for the coming of Christ. Dear Fellow Parishioners: I want to take this moment to offer a special thanks to all those who made our Thanksgiving morning multi-lingual celebration so special. Truly, it remains one of the highlights of our year as a faith community. Many hands were responsible for the hours of preparation which reflected your love and concern for all of us. A special thank you is also in order to all who helped with our annual Thanksgiving breakfast for the homeless. In particular I am grateful to John Estrada and Ignacio Coloma of our St Vincent de Paul Society for their dedication and devotion. As the calendar year ends, don’t forget your 2015 ADA pledge. Your gift is tax-deductible and now that we have reached our goal, every dollar you contribute to fulfill your pledge comes right back to us here at MHT and goes toward our project to air-condition of our church by next summer. Lastly, a couple weeks ago when I handed out the Little Books of prayer for Advent and Christmas, I asked you to fill out a Stewardship financial commitment card expressing your desire to share your treasure. Segundo Domingo de Adviento ESCUCHAR EL LLAMADO Juan nos habla del desierto, un lugar tranquilo. Nos acordamos que Jesús también fue allí. Ummm. Tal vez, muy pocos de nosotros pasamos mucho tiempo allí, porque nuestro mundo por lo regular es muy ruidoso, estrepitoso y lleno de conmoción -especialmente en estos días cercanos a las fiestas. Pero ciertamente cada uno de nosotros tiene un lugar silencioso escondido en algún sitio, y en ese sitio personal de silencio -ya sea en el centro de una plaza comercial a la hora de más actividad o en la cocina al amanecer- estamos llamados a abrazar el mensaje de Juan de arrepentimiento y preparación. SIGUIENDO EL LLAMADO Pero va más lejos, mucho más, porque esto no es sólo nuestro llamado. Es nuestro misión. Sacerdote o congregación, maestro o estudiante, contador o cuidador de animales, padre o niño -nuestra labor colectiva en este mundo es escuchar las instrucciones del Bautista para que preparemos el camino del Señor. Y que mejor momento que ahora, durante el Adviento, para re-enfocar nuestra misión y rededicarnos a la tarea más importante que podemos realizar -obtener la salvación de Dios. ¿Te acuerdas de la carta de Pablo a los filipenses? Personalízala. Echa a un lado la frase "Hermanos y hermanas" y reemplázala con tu propio nombre. Y siguiendo el protocolo de hoy, añadamos un "Querido" al saludo. Leámosla nuevamente. "Querida Sara", o "Querido Miguel", o "Querido J.P." De repente, Pablo, con gran alegría, está orando directamente por nosotros para que tengamos vidas agradables a Dios, y siguiendo el llamado de Juan -y nuestro llamado- para preparar el camino de Jesús. Vinculados así, nos convertimos en amigos por correspondencia en el transcurso de los siglos, y la alegría de Pablo se convierte en nuestra alegría por la venida del Señor. SIMBANG GABI MASS DECEMBER 16 TO 24 AT 5:00 AM Simbang Gabi is a Filipino tradition of celebrating a Novena of Masses 9 days before the birthday of Jesus. These Masses are also celebrated in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Spaniards started this tradition in Mexico and eventually brought it to the Philippines. Simbang Gabi was adapted from the Catholic Misa de Gallo, which literally means “Mass of the Rooster,” to indicate it is held when the rooster crows. During this season, Filipinos create beautiful decorations called “parol”, paper lanterns to commemorate the Star of Bethlehem. The custom is also kept among Filipinos living elsewhere in the world. Some adaptations are deeper. For example, many parishes now in the United States celebrate Simbang Gabi around 7 o’clock in the evening, not just in the morning, in order to accommodate the needs of people on a great variety of work schedules. No matter how or when this celebration takes place, the annual Simbang Gabi provides a strong indication of the depth of Catholicism in the hearts of Filipinos.

Treasures of the Church December 14th, 7:00pm – St. Leo the Great Church – 88 Race Street San Jose. Admission is FREE Treasures of the Church is a travelling devotional exposition and veneration of the relics of Saints presented by Fr. Carlos Martins of the Companions of the cross. There will be a one hour presentation followed by a viewing of the relics. The exposition involves some 150 relics, including those of St. Maria Goretti, St. Therese of Lisieux (the "Little Flower"), St. Francis of Assisi, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Thomas Aquinas, and St. Faustina Kowalska. The supreme highlight is one of the largest relics of the Church's claim to the True Cross in the world and a piece of the Veil that, according to sanctioned tradition, is believed to have belonged to Our Lady. The veneration of relics is a communion with the heroes of our Christian faith, asking for their powerful intercession.Many people have reported outstanding blessings and conversions through this ministry, and many have reported healings. Attendees are encouraged to bring their articles of devotion (such as rosaries, holy cards, etc.) and pictures of ill friends/family members which may be touched to the reliquaries as a means of intercessory prayer. If there is a school affiliated with your Parish, please forward to the Principal for consideration of extra credit in religion class by attending. This is truly a blessing to have in the San Jose Area. Thank you for your assistance in trying to make this a well-attended event.

Community Counseling Services Catholic Charities Community Counseling Services is proud to offer services to the Most Holy Trinity Parish community. We offer therapy for issues such as anxiety, depression, co-occurring mental health issues and substance abuse, trauma, marriage and relationship challenges, sexual issues, grief and loss, court required individual therapy, problems at work, parenting challenges, anger management issues, and life transitions. We also provide psychological evaluations and reports for immigration related issues, wellness education and assistance with enrolling in a health insurance plan. Fees for services are based on a sliding scale. We will be at Most Holy Trinity Parish every Friday. We offer both Spanish and English speaking services. December 6, 2015 El niño is threatening rainy weather ahead — and the possibility of regional flooding. Now is the time to begin thinking about personal and family preparedness. Being prepared means being equipped with the proper supplies you may need in the event of an emergency or disaster. Keep your supplies in an easy-to-carry emergency preparedness kit that you can use at home or in your car in case you must evacuate. At a minimum, you should have the basic supplies listed below:

• Water: one gallon per person, per day (3-day supply for evacuation, 2-week supply for home)

• Food: non-perishable, easy-to-prepare items (3-day supply for evacuation, 2-week supply for home

• Flashlight

• Battery-powered or hand-crank radio

• Extra batteries

• First aid kit • Medications (7-day supply) and medical items

• Multi-purpose tool

• Sanitation and personal hygiene items

• Copies of personal documents (medication list and pertinent medical information, proof of address, deed/lease to home, passports, birth certificates, insurance policies)
