Mossman State School News We enrol families, as well as students.

We acknowledge the traditional custodians, the Kuku Yalanji people, of the land on which our school stands and pay respects to the Elders, past, present and emerging.

Yalada Parents and Carers, Thanks to all those students, parents, friends, staff and community members who braved the

rain and participated in the Carnivale street parade last Friday night. We had 60+ devout Moss-

man State School students and their families who came along and had a sensational time pa-

rading through the streets of Port Douglas. The Mossman State School spirit was evident on

the night and our ’casual’ float looked spectacular. Thanks again to all those families. As one of

our Year 1 boys said ’This is the best day ever’.

Our school hosted the Queensland Police Force’s Cyber Safety sessions for our Year 3 & 4’s and

5 & 6’s. The messages and key strategies that were taught in these sessions are extremely valu-

able and are essential learnings in this day of Social Media. I am asking you to know what

games, apps etc your children access and just as importantly, who they are talking to/communicating

with on-line. Have, and keep having these conversations.

Our Year 6 students along with fellow Year 6 students from Alexandra Bay, Daintree, Wonga Beach, Mial-

lo, Julatten and Port Douglas State Schools are currently participating in the Douglas Cluster of Primary

Schools Year 6 transition camp. The program itinerary was changed at the last minute as weather condi-

tions prevented some activities including the overnight bivouac to take place. From all reports the stu-

dents and staff are having a great time being ’challenged’, participating in some challenging activities and

socialising with students from other schools. We look forward to hearing some stories.

Mr Ryan’s class also braved the wet weather and participated in their planned excursion to Mossman

Gorge and Cooya Beach. This excursion supported their unit of work where the students were reading and analysing traditional stories

including stories from Asia and Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples histories and cultures. The day culminated in sto-

rytelling of Kuku Yalanji clans and Kuku Yalanji Cultural Habitat tours. From all reports the excursion was extremely productive and

enjoyable.

Today we were represented by Erma, Juakene, Laiko, Merle, Rahni, Ronasia, Tomar & Zane at the

Opening ceremony for the Douglas Shire National Reconciliation Week celebrations. Well done to

our students for once again representing themselves, their families, community and Mossman

State School with pride. Definitely leaders of the future. Thank you to Miss Tahnee, Miss Sandra

and Miss Noli for co-ordinating and accompanying our students. Please have a look at the Douglas

Shire Council website for a rundown of what activities are planned during the Reconciliation Week

celebrations. Our school will be hosting a “Ngujakura” morning on Wednesday 2nd June.

Have a lovely weekend.

Kind regards,

Randal
