� Introduced species, Houston, TX 1985

� Considered one of the most troublesome mosquito species in the world because of their pest activity and disease potential.

� Capable of transmitting over 15 viruses.

Zika Virus Overview

� Viral infection

� Fever, rash, redness in/around the eyes, joint pain

� Illness is usually mild

� Disease Transmission

� Transmitted primarily by bite of infected Aedes species mosquitoes

� Human to human transmission:

� sexually

� via blood transfusion

� maternal-fetal transmission

� Reemerging Disease

� First isolated during 1947

� January 2016 – multiple countries affected including the Americas

Areas of Concern

� Established link between Zika and adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes

� Registry is set up to track pregnant women with Zika infection

� Reports of GBS have been observed to increase

� Observed in Brazil where the highest number of Zika cases have occurred
