ISIS hiding weapons insidemosques of Iraq’s Mosul

ERBIL – Radical group of the Islamic State (ISIS)has closed a number of mosques in Iraq’s northerncity of Mosul for military reasons, local sourcesreported on Thursday.

Local activists confirmed that the terror group hasclosed more than six mosques in the western part ofthe city.

Speaking to ARA News in Mosul, head of theNineveh media center Raafat al-Zarari said thehardline group closed the mosque of az-Zahra in theSaddam neighborhood and another one in as-Sukkar neighborhood in the city of Mosul,preventing civilians from performing prayers there.

“There are orders to close thembecause there have been manymosques in the region comparedto the number of worshipers,” al-Zarari reported, quoting ISISmilitants as saying.

“ISIS has started to store weaponsand explosives inside somemosques and using others forbroadcasting news and messagesto the west and local opponents,”media activist J.S. –based in as-Sukkar neighborhood– told ARANews, speaking on condition ofanonymity.

He confirmed that the terrorgroup has a plan to avoid the US-led coalitions airstrikes and “thebest way is to hide weapons andmedia centers inside themosques,” he argued.

“Daesh has been moving itsmilitary hardware to residentialareas since two weeks, includingmosques, in an apparent attemptto avoid the US-led coalition’sairstrikes,” the source added,using an acronym for ISIS.

An expert in Islamic streams toldARA News that this kind ofextremist groups could resort tocommitting terrorist atrocities –including bombing mosques –and then blame that on thecoalition jets to boost theirposition among and gain thesupport of the public.

Over the past few months, the US-led coalition forces were able tokill hundreds of top jihadis as wellas destroying dozens of ISIS-linked media centers, vitallocations and weapons’warehouses in Syria and Iraq.
