A Key Concept
How About a City Wiki for New Orleans?
Faculty discussed and considered the creation of a New Orleans wiki, that is, a city wiki focused on our local community. As a tool for student learning, such a wiki might have several virtues. It could be used across multiple courses; it could fulfill service learn-ing objectives; and it would evolve over a longer time period than a single semester, allowing for the creation of deeper and more meaningful knowledge. By blending community and classroom, it may be possible to overcome some of the inherent limitations observed by Moshirnia.
After the workshop session, it emerged that a nascent city wiki for New Orleans has been started by another party. Titled NolaWiki, it is a project of an independent journalism venture, NolaMessenger. We have partnered with NolaMessenger and are actively promoting NolaWiki to faculty as a service learning opportunity.
