So here, we are, another edition of Mosey. This issues theme is playing games. We at Mosey are quite creative so we like to think that we’ve covered all kinds of games, from video, to mind games played between men and women. We even have an Olympic athlete all up in this issue? isn’t that fantastic? We know!

I’m going to be honest with you guys. I wasn’t picked first for soccer, nor was I very good at soccor. I was how-ever on the A-team for the netball carnival (this was by default as no other boys wanted to play netball) and I’ll tell you what, I brought us a very steady second to last place. Manning Primary represent! So I think I know a little something about games. So immerse yourself in the sweet juicy fun-filled pages of our Games edition. Somebody has to.

quickly. Mark would not stop bragging about himself, often referring to himself in the third person – Stella was bored but what Mark did next was enough for Stella to leave. “He leaned over and touched my earlobe and told me it was the first thing he noticed, every girl I’ve ever been in love with had an earlobe of that shape.” Stella said, “It freaked me out, that’s not the kind of compliment you want on a first date.”

But what about when you’re getting to that point where things are starting to get seri-ous and those “serious questions” are still to be asked. Marriage, kids, politics, reli-gion; all of which can tear people a part.

Erin’s boyfriend could possibly carry the Huntington’s gene – his mother has it, but he doesn’t want to take the tests to see if

THE DATING GAME

When it comes to love everyone hates players, but romantic success depends on mastering the game. We’re all guilty of it. And our success in love and romance depends on how well we do it.

Take my friend Sarah – six months ago her four year relationship with James ended – she’s now dating again but admits it’s been tough. “I don’t know what to do on a date, I got so comfortable with James and now having to start again with someone, asking all those first little questions again is hard. It must have been like that at the start with James, I just can’t remember. I’ve caught myself a few times trying too hard, like is he watching how I hold my fork, drink my coffee – it’s a weird sensation. The other day I was out with a potential new guy and things were going so great, I felt myself float up and look down on the date from above and I had to laugh. Why does dating sometimes drive us crazy? When you’re on a good one it’s so good, one of the best things you can do. Although I would like to settle down again now with someone, for the time being I’m going to enjoy it & take each date as it comes”.

Sarah’s right – it’s something we all do but why is it something that puts our stomach in knots...? I think it’s to do with those nightmare dates you always hear about (and secretly hope there a myth) but there out there.

Take Stella, she agreed to go on a date with Mark – someone she met out through mutual friends. He seemed like a good catch, but their first date went downhill,

it will get him. “He just wants to live his life at the moment and take each day as it comes,” says Erin. They had been dating for six months when he told her. “It was hard at first, it was a lot to deal with – on one hand I’d wished he’d told me earlier but on the other maybe it would have changed the way I felt for him if I knew on those first few dates. Ultimately I have to respect his decision; I love him too much not to.”

Eli Finkel, Ph.D., associate professor at Northwestern University – “dating is a skill, the more you do it, the better you get.” Finkel suggests women ask friends for help but that can bring pitfalls too.

Although I love hearing about my friends dating pursuits (it is of course the obliga-

tory conversation on any girls night or cof-fee catch up) – it’s frustrating to hear them upset about the same problem again and again. And i’m sure if they were honest with me they would tell me the same but taking any advice (and especially from the ones we love) isn’t easy when you’re heart is set on something (or someone).

Panicking isn’t going to help. The dat-ing game is just that, a game and like any game, it’s going to take time, patience and a good sense of humour. That sentence is like the advice I was talking about earlier – you know it but do we have too??? Can it just happen, just once without all the games?

That’s not too much to ask, is it?

Roving LAHow is LA treating you?

It’s treating me quite well. The weather seems to always be great but then that’s pretty easy when you live in a city built on a desert.

What’s it like living there?

I feel a little more settled than when I first got here just over a year ago, although the place is still a bit weird. Los Angeles is kind of like a platypus: all the separate little parts of it don’t look like they’d make much sense if you put them all together, yet somehow the whole thing seems to work overall. The other great thing about LA is that it’s one of the few places I’ve ever been where the majority of people who live here aren’t actually from here. I have met very few people who are LA born and raised, which means everyone is very welcoming and also you won’t insult anyone if you say, “This place is nuts”. If anything they’ll probably reply, “I know!”

Best celebrity spot?

I was at a party at a friend’s house and was sitting outside talking to a bunch of people. I turned to the person next to me for a few minutes and when I rejoined the group, I discovered Sean Penn had sat down and joined us. For the record, he was very nice.

New show Rove L.A - how did this happen? What can we expect from it?

Roving LAshow in 2009, I wasn’t one hundred percent sure of what I wanted to do next. What I did know was that I couldn’t work out what that ‘next thing’ would be while I was still in Australia and reading or hearing what everyone else was doing. I thought it would make me knee jerk into something that wasn’t right or before I was ready. So I decided to come to LA to just get away and enjoy some down time really. Then I started getting offers to appear on The Tonight Show and Chelsea Lately and started doing some more stand up again and before I knew it, what was going to be a shorter 3 month sabbatical became what is coming up to about 18 months. Soon I started feeling like I was ready to come back but thought it was going to have me on a plane back home until Foxtel called and pretty much said “How about a show from Los Angeles?” and away we went. The show will be, in essence, a postcard home with the usual guests plus a few taped pieces of me showing you around LA, beyond what the tourist guides will show you. For example, did you know the LA County Morgue has a gift shop? Well, it does and I’ll be sure to tell you all about it.

You’ve been working for Jay Leno (Rove Across America Segment). Frog Jumping, Lumberjacking....possibly the most random events - what’s been your favourite?

The first one at the Eelpout Festival in Walker, Minnesota was certainly very memorable for a number of reasons. The first being that it was

my inaugural assignment for The Tonight Show and the moment was not lost on me, and secondly for the fact it was a cold the likes of which I had never felt in my life – and then at the end of it all they made me jump into a frozen lake. But I guess my favourite so far has been the Frog Jumping Contest in Northern California, mainly because the competitors took it so very very seriously. No one would tell us where they caught their frogs and no one would tell us what temperature they kept them warm at, which is an important part of frog racing preparation I’ll have you know. It made it all the more fun to try to mess with them as much as I could. Plus, it was during this piece that I not only licked a bullfrog but also ate a cricket, so that’s hard to top.

What do you enjoy doing when not working?

Chilling out at home. Tasma and I have a great place tucked up in the hills, away from all the craziness, with a backyard that backs onto a huge stretch of bushland. It’s the perfect spot just to get back to normal after a long day dealing with the weirdness of Hollywood. Plus

we get a whole lot of animals coming through on a regular basis, like deer, skunks, coyotes, hummingbirds, squirrels and bobcats. As you can imagine, I’m in nerd heaven.

Any other projects coming up?

Apart from Rove LA which kicks off Monday, September 19 at 8:30pm on Fox8, I have also been recording a live podcast from Universal Studios once a week, which can be found on iTunes or on the Toadhop Network website. Plus I still have my regular Rove Across America and Meal Or No Meal segments on The Tonight Show and they have just added a third one called Woulda Coulda Shoulda which launched a few weeks ago. That’s enough to keep me out of trouble.

One thing you recommend everyone does when they visit LA?

Without a doubt, the X2 roller coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain theme park. Even if you don’t like roller coasters. I don’t care. Just do it. It’s usually ranked as one of the top 5 roller coasters in the world and is the equivalent of feeling like you’ve been put in a spin dryer. And if you can do it without hanging on, you enter a select group of people who have earned my roller coaster respect. Even just talking about it makes me want to go on it right now.

Profile

Name: Poppy Lissiman Age: 23 Lives: Perth Label: Poppy Lissiman Latest collection: Pantonia S/S As a designer what inspires you? All sorts of things, anything from watching a movie to reading a book. Probably the most inspira-tional thing I have found lately is street style blogs because they show how real women are dress-ing; I’m addicted to Style.com’s coverage of the shows as shot by Tommy Ton from Jak & Jil as well as Streetfsn, another favourite of mine. What are your wardrobe ‘must haves’ for spring/summer 2011? A really beautiful, statement maxi skirt. Longer lengths have been around for a while now but they are becoming more and more prevalent with each season. I think a statement maxi skirt in a bight silk or a beautiful print can be dressed down with a singlet or dressed up for any occasion with a beautiful silk shirt. You also can’t go past a good pair or bathers and a few cocktail dresses for all the Xmas/New Year/Weddings that pop up over the summer break. You’ve recently relocated pro-duction to Sydney, how does Perth fashion scene compare and what expansions do you see or hope for, for WA Fashion in

with your own business. It was quite surreal to meet someone like her as since I was young and Sass + Bide jeans were a ward-robe staple I always did look up to her and Heidi as a design team. I think their recent deal with Myers is fantastic and definitely very inspirational. What’s your trend forecast for spring/summer this year? Lots of bright colours especially blocked together and often in combinations that would normally be too much like purple and green, or red and pink. Clashing prints is another trend I think we will be seeing a lot more of, as I men-tioned earlier longer lengths will continue throughout summer as well as boho detailing like fring-ing, ikat prints and other tribal related references.

You continue to bring brilliantly vibrant colours and distin-guished prints in your Pantonia Collec-tion. Would you consider this as a design signature for you? I try and avoid black when de-signing a summer collection. I do love colour though no matter what season, I think the last couple of collections I have realised that working with colour has been a strong selling point for me I guess it has become something of a design signature.

the future? I still very much live in Perth. I have just recently relocated all of my production to Sydney as the quality is higher prices slightly more competitive. In terms of Perth fashion scene compared to Sydney I would say that there are a lot of similarities and differ-ences, similarities in that Perth is comparable to Sydney in terms of weather and what I think the general population like to wear, as opposed to Perth and Melbourne. Perth/Sydney like bright colours, have a very strong beach culture which is reflected in our casual, no fuss dressing. Perth is starting to catch up to Sydney a bit more with more stand alone stores and flag-ship stores for independent labels, there is definitely a lot more on offer in Perth compared to a few years ago. Sass n Bide opened up in Perth. Yah! Tell us a bit about your requested meet with the inspi-rational Sass n Bide designers at their opening here in Perth? Have they been an inspiration in your journey of success? I was invited to the opening by a friend in the industry and Sarah Jane Clarke (aka Sass) asked one of her staff members to introduce her to me, I think she liked my skirt and had heard about me recently showing at RAFW a few weeks prior. She was absolutely lovely and had some very encour-aging words about being young

FASHION INTERVIEWWhat’s the story behind the Pantonia Collection?

I chose the name Pantonia after the Pantone colours; it was merely just a reference to the use of colour in the collection. The story behind the collection originally started off as some inspiration I had from some Helmut Newton images I had seen of models lazing around pools in the 70s. I wanted to recre-ate a kind of 70s, Miami-poolside glamour with a modern resort edge. In the end I think original inspiration got a bit lost along the way but that was kind of the first thing that got the ball rolling with the collection. And for our readers I just have to ask, does the iron bunned model in b/w striped Speedos come as a bonus gift with any orders made? Hah, I wish... He’s actually not a model but a family friend. The look book was shot at his house because he has a nice pool. As we were wrapping up the shoot I asked him to come down into a few shots and pretend to be a pool boy, they ended up being some of the best shots of the day so I very glad we took advantage of his presence. What has been your greatest asset in your pursuit of Fashion Design? And what would your wise words be to any budding fashion designer? The greatest asset I have had I

think has been the support of both of my parents. My mum has a background in fashion and has been a tremendous help to me with whatever part of the business I need her help in, she is the person I voice all my ideas and uncertain-ties. My dad is very business minded and helps me manage the business side of my label, in-cluding keeping on top of all my accounts, invoices etc...My advice to any budding fashion designer is be prepared for more work than you could expect a lot of it never actually being creative and make sure you have a supportive net-work around you, be it your family or peers. Mosey Footnote... Poppy Lissiman will be opening their first stand alone store this Oc-tober in Claremont, Western Aus-tralia called Poppy Lissiman Ad-dition. A new Facebook page and website will be launched shortly for this new exciting extension of the Poppy Lissiman brand. The Poppy Lissiman Addition store will be a multi brand boutique that will not only stock the namesake label but other beautiful women’s wear labels from Australia, the US and UK. The store will also feature PL pieces exclusive only to the Poppy Lissiman Addition store such as hand rolled scarves, jew-elry and items from the collection in new colour ways and prints! www.poppylissiman.com

Run the GamesNot just a pretty face in this issue’s photo shoot, Ben is Australia’s lead-ing 400m runner. Just back from the World Championships in Korea, Ben spoke to us about what it takes to get to this level and what he’s doing to be ready for the 2012 London Olympics (which may include a chocolate ban – that’s dedication if you ask us)! We also got the goss on the after parties...

In the lead up to the Commonwealth Games last year you ran a world lead-ing 44.86 - what does it feel like to run that fast? Could you feel going into that race that you were going to run like that?

Well get in your car, drive at 40km/h, wind your window down and stick your head out the window. That will give you a slight indication on what it’s like to run that fast. Going into that race I knew I was on for a quick time but didn’t think it was going to be that fast, running a 44. is a big milestone in 400m running. The world record is still held by American Michael Johnson at 43.18 - do you think it’s a record that can be broken soon?

Well I can tell you now if anyone does break it, it won’t be me anytime soon. That time of 43.18 is inhuman - I don’t think there is anyone running around at the moment that can break that time. Well maybe if they popped a few pills they might get close! What was Korea like?

Korea was amazing, wasn’t what I was expecting. The people there were super

friendly, maybe a little too friendly. They just wanted to do everything for you. It’s nice to start with, but then it grew tire-some.

What does it take to get ready for an event like the World Championships?

It involves a lot of training and some-times people ask why I do it and give up so much for the sport, but when you’re out there competing for your country in front of 60,000 people then it sort of makes it all worth it. You forget about the hard training that you went through. You’ve been to Europe a couple of times before major competitions - pros & con’s of this for you?

Well starting with the cons: I guess the hardest thing is routine, you are out of your normal routine and sometimes it’s hard to adjust but I think the pros out weight the cons. Just being able to go to Europe and travel to so many different countries and meet the people you do and experience the things that Europe has to offer, it’s something that I wouldn’t swap for anything. There’s just over 300 days to the Lon-don Olympics now: What will you do to get there?

I guess I won’t be getting there without more training - ill be hitting the track hard out.

Any big sacrifices?

There are always sacrifices - you have to limit the late nights that you have and I try to stick to a good diet. At the mo-ment I’m thinking of putting myself on a chocolate ban till the Olympics, which is a weakness of mine, we will see how

BY TEGAN MAFFESCIONI

Run the Games

that goes.

Your goals for London?

In London I’ll be going there just like everyone else with the goal of medaling. Hopefully I can come home with a shiny new bit of metal. You have a team around you - how im-portant are they?

You’re not getting anywhere on your own. Support team is so important. It wouldn’t

be possible without my coach, my physio, my doctors, my training partners - the list goes on. They all work behind the scenes, but are very much a big part of what I do and the success I have. Mentors/idols in athletics or outside athletics?

I’m not really someone to get star struck so I don’t real-ly have any idols or mentors, but someone I do respect very much is Betty Cuthbert, [Betty won 3 gold med-als at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics & is now living with multiple sclerosis] she is one of the most amazing ladies I have met. The thing’s she has achieved in her life with the obstacles that have been put in her path is incredible. If you don’t know who she is then I suggest you Google her or something... Most memorable athletics moment so far...?

The best moment so far has to be winning the bronze medal at the 2009 World Championships in the 4x400m relay. Something that I won’t forget was getting to run around on the track on a victory lap with 3 other mates and 70,000 people screaming. It was a nice feeling, gives me goose bumps every time I think about it. Outside of running - what do you enjoy doing?

When I’m not running I love drinking coffee and lying in the sun; two things that make me very happy. There are people addicted to drug, alcohol, gambling...well I think I’m addicted to the sun, just makes me so happy!

And of course Mosey needs to know what the after party is like at a major event???

haha well how do I describe the after parties....they are messy. Think of athletes who are good for so long and then after a major champ they let their hair down so to speak and get loose. And being a sport that is made up with a lot of people of African descent there is a lot of booty shaking and grinding. Some people describe it as ‘sex with clothes on’ – it’s always a good party and with a couple thousand people it never gets boring and always goes to the small hours of the morning.

Do You Know How to Flirt?Summers almost here so check this quiz to ensure your flirting action-plan out of winter hibernation...

Q10. Your no-fail way to get into a conversation with him is:A- Carry some tic tacs around with you and offer him oneB- Compliment him OR Comment on something he didC- Wear something hotD- Ask him for help on something... anything. Damzel in distress

RESULTS:

Mostly A’s: You obviously aren’t that into flirting, but want to try. I fully understand that it is just so intimidating to walk up to your crush and flirt, so here is a tip for getting his attention: Practice!Try smiling at yourself in the mirror for 2-3 seconds, glancing down and looking back up and smiling again. Then turn to the toilet (or yourfriend, if you are doing it for real) and talk to her, but make sure to frequently glance to the mirror again. Don’t stare, nobody wants a stalker. Pay close attention to your friend to show you aren’t needy, just interested. If you practice you will feel more comfortable doing itfor real.:)

Mostly B’s: You’re trying, I can see that - it just needs a little more work. If you are shy, try flirting randomly a bit with guys you don’tknow and will never see again. Make sure not to change numbers or anything. It’s sort of like real life practice so you can feel more confident about yourself. And confidence makes you look good!:)

Mostly C’s: Wow, girl, slow down! You’re laying it on way too thick - relax, you can talk to a guy normally too! Don’t go overboard with it, try to look natural at all times, and that means looks (makeup, clothing) and what you are saying. Let him chase you a little bit in the beginning, and don’t act like a stalker. Give him some space to live his life, just prove you are interested in him but have your own fun life.:) You know the basics, you’re just going a bit overboard with it. Lay offa tiny amount, and you’re fine. Make sure to talk with the guy, not just flirt. Check out his baseball cap, ask him about the team. Say: I heard your basketball team won so and so and so. Remember: compliment, comment, ask! That’s all you need to have a nice conversation with a guy. Then you drop a few little hints and there you have it. Done.:)

Mostly D’s: Awesome! You’re pretty good at flirting. You know how to draw the line between hiding in the corner and going overboard with it.The more you actually flirt, the better you will get. You don’t want to be seen as easy with the boys, though, so practice with the mirror, friends or guys you know you don’t know and probably never will. Don’t lay it on too thick, let him chase you just a little, but not toomuch. Ask questions and appear interested in guys you are flirting with and keep them talking. Then change numbers and call only after 2-3 days. That way he’ll have to chase you a bit. But once again: warning! He’ll give up on you if you always run away.:)
