Hooray for Hollywood!

Hollywood and celebrity is infusing all aspects of the Arts Center this summer:• Our visual arts exhibitions are filled with authentic movie costumes and artwork by

celebrities (Frank Sinatra, James Dean, Charles Bronson and more).• Hollywood Make Believe will fill the children’s museum where visitors get to exercise their

star potential. Plus, families can enjoy a wholesome night out on Thursdays with live movie characters, hands-on activities and Fazoli’s dinner.

• We are offering creative and energizing art-filled summer camps — an extension of our successful Young at Art Afterschool Program — based on favorite kids movies like Cars and Finding Nemo.

• We are actively working on community projects with two Hollywood directors/producers: Daniel Valdez (Drama Fest) and Lawrence Foldes (Film Fest).

• Finally, to punctuate this Hollywood-filled summer, we will host Margarita & a Movie — with an arty film, margaritas, delicious goodies and prizes for members.Best of all, we believe the amazing amount of Hollywood fun this summer typifies the mission

at the Arts Center. While we always work to achieve a high level of artistic quality in all of our programming, we work just as hard to ensure everything we do is accessible and educational. This summer certainly showcases fine art that is high-quality, entertaining and public-friendly.

All this summer fun ignites with our glamorous 36th Anniversary Gala. On June 6, this elegant affair promises a glitzy night complete with red carpet, martini bar and a professional Hollywood-themed performance starring well-known cabaret singer Lannie Garrett.

Buell Children’s MuseuM

The Magic Carpet Theater at the Buell Children’s Museum is about to get a bit more magic. This June, the children’s museum will launch a new large-scale virtual reality program called PlayMotion.

Both physically and mentally interactive, PlayMotion is a visually stunning playground where the full-body movements of children are projected into a variety of backgrounds. Throughout the year, children will be able to frolic in a variety of virtual realms: The Solar System, Virtual Water, Teapot Symphony, SnowMo Sapiens, Jelly Fish, Electric Kool Aid and more. For example, kids will be able to play with:

SPeCTrUM. Dance and play as rainbows of ever changing color radiate from your moving body. Paint mesmerizing spirals and washes on the wall with simple gestures transformed to elegant rainbow vortices.

My SOLAr SySTeM. Our Solar System — a perennial favorite for adults and children alike. Imagine you are a titan as you manipulate the planets of our solar system with your own arms and hands. Protect the Earth from rogue asteroids within the shelter of your outstretched arms, or try tossing Mars or Venus into another universe. What’s more, as you catch and hold a planet, an information bubble appears displaying a relevant scientific fact.

TreeS. A uniquely sublime experience, Trees actually rewards stillness. Hit a pose, stand stationary for a short moment . . . suddenly realistic limbs, branches and leaves begin to emerge f rom your trunk and outstretched arms,

transforming you temporarily into a beautiful tree. Others join the fun and add their trees, and before you know it, a whole forest has materialized.

Of course, PlayMotion is just another layer of interactivity to enhance the already dynamic children’s museum with its large kinetic sculpture, hands-on art stations, Artrageous Studio, Sensations room, sometimes singing educational assistants and monthly performances. All of this adds up to why the Buell Children’s Museum is ranked second in the nation for art by Child magazine. v

One of Pueblo’s fresh new artists, Cathy Valenzuela learned her craft through one of the classes offered by the Sangre de Cristo School of Arts.

In the fall of 1999, Valenzuela took the popular fused glass art and design class from Bob Lane at Lane’s House of Glass. “Bob had been creating stained glass for years,” says Valenzuela, “but was just starting to explore fused glass art himself when I took my first class. What an adventure we began.”

Valenzuela believes that the Arts Center class really opened a door for her. After her initial class, she continued to go to the glass studio and work on projects as time allowed. She says, “Glass itself is inherently beautiful, but the things that Bob has taught me over the years have served to help me create artwork that so many people now enjoy. He has continued to educate himself and his staff in ways that I never would have had time to do on my own.”

After several years of practicing her new artistry, Valenzuela finally felt her work was something that others would appreciate. She began offering a piece here and there to silent auctions that needed donations. Positive feedback fueled her passion and pushed her in new directions. Her work is shown permanently in the Nemick & Thompson gallery on Union Avenue, as well as the Arts Center gift shop. She is a popular feature in the annual Arts Center Own Your Own Art Sale. She has shown at art shows throughout Pueblo and Colorado. And, she has also created many commissioned works for her fans.

Her work now includes functional pieces such as platters and bowls, as well as wall hangings, display stand items and sconces. She has been utilized by interior designers to create specific pieces for different homes. With all of this work under her belt, Valenzuela believes this is just the beginning of her art career.

She says, “I have experienced many times over the joy that participating in the arts can bring to individuals and families. I would never have been able to learn or explore glass art on

my own the way I was able to in my very first class. The continuing studio time offered to

me by Bob is only possible because new students come to him through the Arts Center.” v

This is your brain on ArTArts, Learning and the Brain

seven universities across america – over three years – grappled with questions about arts education and its relationship to academic success. they asked their own version of the proverbial chicken-and-egg question: are smarter people compelled to do art or do the arts make you smarter? using new brain scan technology, these scientists came up with interesting preliminary information.

» iMPrOved COGNiTiON. a high interest in a performing art is usually accompanied by a high motivation to perform. with this motivation, you are willing to focus your attention for a sustained period of time. while focusing your attention, you are also training your attention. this focused training of attention improves other areas of cognition.

» MeMOry MANiPULATiON. scientists have found specific links between high levels of music training and the ability to manipulate information in both working and long-term memory. Best of all, these benefits extend outside music training into other areas.

» ACTiNG & MeMOry. People who train to be actors have improved memory skills that extend outside of dramatic arts.

» dANCiNG OBServATiON. the same observational learning used in dance class transfers to other cognitive skills and can make you a better learner.

» MUSiC & GeOMeTry. in children, scientists have found specific links between the practice of music and skills in geometrical representation. interestingly, these same links haven’t been found with other forms of numerical representation.

» MUSiC & reAdiNG. studies have found correlations between music training and both reading acquisition and sequence learning. a predictor of early literacy, phonological awareness also correlates with music training and the development of a specific brain pathway.

» GeNeTiC iNTereST iN The ArTS. Preliminary genetic studies have identified candidate genes that may help explain individual differences in interest in the arts. in other words, John may be genetically predisposed to love music, while Karen may be genetically predisposed to love dance.

AAs the Arts Center celebrates our 36th Anniversary, we are also taking several big steps into the technological future. Exciting new techno features promise to enhance the experience at the Arts Center.

What’s slated for this techno transformation? Visitors, members and customers can now look forward to: audio/visual gallery tours via iPods and podcasts; wireless Internet (Wi-Fi); and online registration and purchasing.

wi-Fi. Wi-Fi (pronounced WHY-FY) stands for wireless fidelity and simply means that you can access the Internet without being plugged into the wall. With this computer freedom, any visitor with a laptop (and a wireless card) can connect to the Internet from myriad nooks and crannies within any of the three buildings at the Arts Center. This is a

great new addition for our rental clients, parents waiting for a dance class, students working in the galleries or many uses we haven’t thought of yet.

iPOdS. iPods provide vast interactive gallery experience on an itty-bitty machine. Visitors will get to experience everything from interviews with artists to in-depth exhibition information. iPods will be available to all gallery visitors and can be checked out from guards in the galleries. If you already have an iPod or any mp3 player, you can easily download podcasts with the same information offered in the galleries from iTunes or the Arts Center’s web site. Each of the podcasts will also be downloadable from the computer in the Ryals Family Library at the Arts Center.

ONLiNe PUrChASiNG. We are tackling the frontier of online purchasing. This summer, customers will have the ability to purchase classes online or sign up for an Arts Center or Studio 210 membership. Each semester, all School of Arts classes will be listed online at sdc-artsedu.org. Customers can view and register for classes from this web address as well. And, we are looking forward to the future with the ability to purchase art and gift shop items from our web site.

Technology is expanding, and with that, the Arts Center experience is evolving. Connect with us this summer and see it for yourself. v

OOn May 2, 2008, Maggie Divelbiss, Executive Director of the Sangre de Cristo Arts & Conference Center for the past twenty years, will be awarded the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation’s 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award in the arts and humanities. The Denver-based foundation gives three awards each year to Coloradans for distinguished careers in community service, the arts and humanities and science and medicine. Divelbiss has been recognized many times in her career, but she said the Bonfils-Stanton award was an unexpected honor. Along with the recognition, she also will receive a $35,000 prize.

“I’ve always thought of myself as being in sales more than the arts. Fortunately, I’ve always had two high-quality products to sell — Pueblo and the arts center.”

Cheech Marin visits the sangre de Cristo arts Center with City Councilman Larry Atencio, on April 19. Marin spoke later that evening at the La Gente fundraiser at the Pueblo Convention Center.

Two Hollywood producer/directors, one grownup child actor and gobs of community collaboration equals two exciting artistic events this fall. First, Pueblo will welcome the Independence Film Fest of Colorado on the last weekend of September (one week after the Chile Festival). And, in November, Pueblo will debut The Song of Pueblo – An Oratorio written, composed and directed by Daniel Valdez and performed by Pueblo actors and musicians.

The SONG OF PUeBLO — AN OrATOriO. An oratorio is a story-telling musical and The Song of Pueblo will tell the complex and diverse story of Pueblo. Part of the Hasan Drama Fest, the oratorio will be performed on Thursday, November 13 and Saturday, November 15, in the Arts Center Theatre.

Pueblo is lucky to have Daniel Valdez on hand to write, compose and direct the performances. Valdez is probably best known for his work – with his brother Luis – on the Chicano film classic Zoot Suit and the popular movie La Bamba. As well as composing and producing, Valdez performed in both of these movies, and other feature films such as: The China Syndrome and Born in East L.A. He also composed music for Born in East L.A.

More recently, Valdez worked with students with a 10-week residency at Stanford University. Here he premiered the performance Ollin, based on an epic poem about the conquest of Mexico written originally by Valdez for National Public Radio. Ollin — amazingly performed in three languages: English, Spanish and Nahuatl — was just restaged this March at Su Teatro in Denver.

All of this amazing talent and experience is coming to Pueblo, with the help and work of the Hasan Family Foundation, Sangre de Cristo Arts Center, El Pueblo History Museum, CSU-Pueblo, Pueblo City-County Library District, Pueblo Performing Arts Guild and Destination Pueblo. Valdez is writing and composing the oratorio over the summer and will begin production of the premiere performances starting in late August. Pueblo performers and musicians will be needed for the

production. Audition dates are yet to be determined.

The Arts Center will also be offering master classes taught by Valdez, while CSU-Pueblo will host a production class taught by Valdez.

iNdePeNdeNCe FiLM FeST OF COLOrAdO. Dubbed “Colorado’s feisty new film festival” by The Denver Post, the Independence Film Fest of Colorado will come to Pueblo on the last weekend of September. Established by Hollywood filmmaker Lawrence David Foldes and his wife former child actor Victoria Paige Meyerink, the festival celebrates films as they were made in the 60s, 70s and early 80s — more “character- and story-driven films.”

In addition to showing movies, the IFFC honors the people who make the movies. Last year’s festival honored John Landis, director of Animal House and The Blues Brothers; Randal Kleiser, director of Grease and The Blue Lagoon; and three-time Oscar nominee Diane Ladd.

This year’s festival will honor Franklin J. Schaffner, who directed Patton and the original Planet of the Apes, and Elvis Presley, the actor. (As a child, Meyerink appeared in the Presley movie Speedway.)

Again, this great new Pueblo event is only possible because of great community collaboration. Helping Foldes and Meyerink to bring this film festival to town are: the Pueblo’s Marriott Hotel, the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center, Historic Arkansas Riverwalk of Pueblo, the Pueblo Performing Arts Guild, The Pueblo Chieftain, the Pueblo City-County Library, Castle Investment and Loan, Infozone News Museum, the Pueblo Convention Center, the Urban Renewal Authority of Pueblo, and the Greater Pueblo Chamber of Commerce. v

Titanic. Pride and Prejudice. Evita. Out of Africa. Gosford Park. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

Created for beautiful films by award-winning directors and filmmakers, and elegantly worn by the likes of Madonna, Anjelica Huston, Drew Barrymore and Gwyneth Paltrow, fashion in film: period Costumes for the screen highlights 36 original costumes from popular period movies — many recognized by the Motion Picture Academy for costume design.

All featured costumes were created for period productions, from the 16th to the middle of the 20th centuries. Some costumes are from characters based on real-life history: Elizabeth I, Thomas Jefferson and Eva Peron. Other costumes come from classic fictional characters, like Sense and Sensibility, Hamlet and Murder on the Orient Express. These amazingly beautiful pieces showcase detailed beadwork and delicate materials. Costumes include evening wear, day wear, wedding dresses, and fanciful outfits like the Cinderella character’s dress in Ever After and the Maharajah’s turban and tunic in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

WWhat an incredible event! An exciting crowd of Arts Center newbies and long-time fans came together for the Studio 210 inaugural event on April 11. The playful, yet sophisticated party featured signature Mojitos, green M&Ms and other green colored food provided by Hopscotch Bakery. Adorable green footprint cookies were served with coffee or green tea provided by Solar Roast.

Guests had many opportunities to exercise their inner artist: creating shoe print art, banging on a variety of drums or watching artists from Infamous

Art paint. The surprise hit of the evening was an interactive drum circle in the King Gallery where partygoers got to try their hand at a variety of percussion instruments, provided by Guitar Center for the evening. One exasperated partygoer said, “We have to leave, but I can’t get my wife to stop playing the cowbell!” Some attendees dressed with

eco-flair for the evening. Several women donned newspaper roses. Stylists from Euphoria Salon passed mojitos through the evening while wearing “green” message Ts (one stated: “The only thing I throw away is boys!”). Committee member Erin Reilly wore a glitzy silver shirt made from recycled bottles, and artist Aaron Williams wore a kilt made from jeans. All three levels in the Helen T. White Gallery building were decorated with flowers made by local artists (most artists from Art on South Main) from recycled materials. v

Charitable giving is truly an act of faith. People and families give with the belief that their gifts will make a difference in their communities or the larger world.

Financial advisors and experienced philanthropists often recommend that families develop a mission statement for charitable giving. A family mission statement speaks to the management, preservation and transference of a portion of your assets. When you are strategic with your giving dollars, you can ensure that your contributions will be more effective and underscore your values and inspirations. More importantly, when you plan charitable giving with your family, you set a wise example of giving back to your community.

While we always recommend consulting a financial advisor, here are some steps to get you started: step one: DETERMINE YOUR GIVING GOALSreflect. First, look at where, why and how you have given in the past. As you review your giving history, it is important to reflect on the causes you have supported and what you hoped to accomplish with your giving. identify. As a family , identify what inspires you. Determining your inspiration enables you to deliberately support causes that fulfill your vision. There are many noble causes in both Pueblo and the larger world, so it is wise to prioritize your giving based on your passions.

step Two: DEVELOP A GIVING MISSION STATEMENTA Giving Mission Statement is a powerful guide that articulates both your charitable goals and the steps you take to achieve them. Effective mission statements are succinct – one to three sentences — and should address: family core values, causes and organizations, and steps for implementation. It can be helpful for your family to examine the following questions:

• Why is philanthrophy important to this family?

• What impact do we want to make with our giving? Why?

• What criteria will we use to guide our giving?

• When will we give? And, how do we plan on giving?step 3: DECIDE WHERE TO GIVEWhile it is important to give to organizations that support your most passionate causes, you must also consider the operating practices and financial feasability of each non-profit organization. Begin by reevaluating relationships with organizations you have supported in the past. You might also consider: news and editorial coverage; operating guidelines; funds used directly for programming; and word of mouth from friends, donors and grantmakers with similar charitable interests. You can use www.guidestar.org to learn about any non-profit organization.
