Notes

Ascant¼”seammeanstheseamisslightlylessthan¼”.Thisisveryimportantinordertoensurethatyourseamslineup.It’sagoodideatodoalittletestbeforeyoustartbysewingtogethertwo1¼”stripsoffabrictogether,pressingtheseamopenandmeasuringthewidthofthefabricstrips.Theyshouldbe1”wideeach.Iftheyaremoreorless,adjustyourneedleaccordinglyanddoanothertest.

• Prewashingfabricsisuptoyourdiscretion.Ifyouwantaquiltthatwillbelesscrinkly,prewashyourfabricsandyourbatting(followpackagedirections).Ifyoudon’tprewashbutareconcernedaboutcolorsrunning,throwadyecatchingsheet(likeShoutbrand)intothewashingmachinethefirsttimeyouwashthequilt.

Cut Fabric Cut selvedges from all fabrics before cutting the pieces.Fromthecoloredfabrics:• Cut1strip1.5”x18”fromeachofthe12
fabrics• Cut1strip3”x15”fromeachof8fabrics
and1strip3”x18”fromeachoftheremaining4fabrics
• Cut1strip6”x24”fromeachof4fabricsand1strip6”x30”fromeachoftheremaining8fabrics

Piece Quilt Top1. Sewa1”stripofwhitefabrictoeachofthecoloredstrips,longsidestogether.Pressseamsopen.Trimthe whitefabricflushwiththecolored.2. Cutthepiecedstripsintosmallerunitslikeso:
• Smalleststripsintopieces1.5”wide,144total
• Mediumstripsintopieces3”wide,64total
• Largeststripsintopieces6”wide,56total
Setasidethe3”and6”pieces.
3. Onadesignwallorotherflatsurfacearrangethe1.5”piecesina12x12gridwiththewhitestripsorientedtotheright.
4. Sewtogethereachofthe12rows.Pressseamsopen.

5. Fromthewhitestrips,cut11pieces18.5”long.Sewastriptothebottomofthetoprowbeingsuretoaligneitherend.Pressseamopen.6. Laythesecondrowoverthefirst,rightsidestogether,aligningthebottomedges.Usetheverticalwhitestripstolineupthetworowsandpinthemtogether.Pressseamopen.
7. Repeatsteps5and6fortheremainingrows.Donotsewawhitestriptotheverylastrow.
8. Onthedesignwallarrangethe3”piecesintworoundsaroundthepiecedcenterwiththewhitestripstotheright.9. Sewtogethereachrow.Pressseamsopen.10. Sewtherowsoneithersideofthecentergridtoeachotherwithwhitestripsinbetweenthesamewayyoudidthecenter.Youshouldhaveshorterpiecesthatweretrimmedoff
earlierthatyoushoulduseifpossible.Donotsewawhitestripontheverybottom.
11. Seweachsideunittoeithersideofthecenter,liningupeveryotherwhitestriptotherowsinthecenter.Pressseamsopen.
12. Sewthetoptworowslikeyoudidwiththesmallerpieceswiththeadditionofastripofwhitefabriconthebottom.13. Sewthebottomtworowstogetherwithawhitestripinbetweenandsewanadditionalstriptothetop,notthebottom.14. Sewthetopandbottomtothecenter,beingcarefultolineuptheverticalwhitestrips.
Normally I would sew all of the white strips to the bottoms of the pieced rows before sewing the rows together to save time, but in this case you can line up your vertical seams more easily if you do each row one at a time. Sew a strip to the bottom, sew on the next row, repeat, etc.

15. Arrangetheremaining6”piecesintworoundsaroundthepiecedcenter.16. Sewtogethereachrow.Pressseamsopen.17. Useyourseamrippertoremovetherightmostwhitestripfromeachrow.Discardtheremovedstrips.
Sewtherowstogetherandtothepiecedcenterwithwhitestripsinbetweeninthesamewayyoudidthe3”roundsinsteps10-14.Youwillneedtopiecetogetherthewhitestripsinorderforthemtobelongenoughforthetopandbottomrows.
Piece the Back Trimtheselvedgesfrombothpiecesofbackingfabric.Cuttheshorterpieceinhalflengthwisethensewtheendstogether.Pressseamopen.Sewthispiecetothelargerbackingfabric,lengthwise.Trimthewholethingdownto60”x60”Alternately,youcanmakethebackusingleftoverfabricfromthefrontofyourquiltandsupplementwithadditionalfabricifnecessary.ThisiswhatIusuallydo.Ilaythepiecesouttogetaroughideaofhowtheywillbestfittogetherthentrim,sew,trim,etc.untilthebackislargeenough.
Quilting
Makeyourquiltsandwichandbasteinwhicheverwayyouprefer.FormyquiltIusedafree-motionfoottocreateaboxyall-overpattern.Youcoulddothesamethingwithawalkingfootbutitwouldmeanalotofturningandmanhandlingyourquilt.Startofftheedgeofyourquilttopandsewright-anglesasinthediagrambelow.Youwillgetneater,sharpercornersifyoukeeptheneedlegoingbutbrieflypausethequiltbeforeyoumoveitinadifferentdirection.

It’simportanttonotethatIwascarefulnottohaveanyofmyquiltinglinescrossovereachother.Ifyourtopisn’tperfectlyflat,thiswillhelpeventhingsoutthroughthequilting.Itwillalsopreventanypuckering.Whenyou’redonequilting,squareupyourquilt,trimmingtotheedgeofthequilttop.
Bind Your Quilt
Sewyourbindingstripstogether,endtoend,pressseamsopenthenpressbindinginhalflengthwise.Applythebindingtothefrontofyourquiltwitha⅜”seam.Foldbindingtothebackandhandstitchwithaninvisiblestitch.
