For me the answer to the question, “Why Mosaic”, is experienced in finding harmony while integrating a variety of treasured fragments within a composition.

Mosaic is an ancient expression which dates from at least 500BC Greek pebble mosaics, through to the Byzantine religious mosaics of the Roman world, to a present day renaissance of contemporary mosaics seen in the active associations of the Society of American Mosaic Artists, (SAMA), the British Association of Modern Mosaics, (BAMM), and the International Association of Mosaics, (AIMC), all of which I am a current member, and with which I have exhibited in juried art shows.

Born in Vancouver, B.C., I became an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists in 1991, when I was a mixed media painter, having attended professional development courses at Emily Carr School of Art and Design, and while active in community theatre set design and juried art shows. After a trip to Venice, Italy, in 2002, where I saw the mosaics of the Basilica and the Orsoni mosaic smalti kilns, I began working in this medium.

Ocean to alpine is the fortunate lifestyle I live, residing on a Vancouver Island beachfront in summer and at Whistler Mountain in winter. My work reflects these influences from the texture of rocky cliffs to the smooth pebbles and wave forms of the sea. I am also influenced by travel and the diversity of the human expression in culture and art. This diversity is what inspires me to express myself in mosaic. For example, I can integrate fragments of ceramic from Turkey, beads from Nepal, china from England, smalti from Italy, rocks from B.C. mountainsides and pebbles from B.C. beaches, all in one composition.

“Why Art … Why Mosaic … What is Beauty.” I think beauty is seen in the diversity and union of natural and manmade materials. To express this diversity in the harmonious unity of a mosaic, for me, gives voice to the essence of creativity in art.
