Principals Report -
Hands on Learning
As menoned in last week’s newsleer, from the start of third term we will be introducing an excing new pro-
gram for a group of students in Years 8-10. As the name ‘Hands on Learning’ suggests, the program focuses on
applied or praccal learning and it is designed to complement the parcipants’ exisng studies. The develop-
ment of literacy and numeracy skills is a key focus of the program albeit in a different context as the students
work on creave building projects that benefit the school and local community. These projects will provide tan-
gible outcomes of the students’ skills and endeavours leaving lasng evidence that can be shared with family,
the school and the wider community both immediately and in ensuing years. Because the group is small the stu-
dents involved in the program develop strong relaonships with each other and with their teachers.
Two teachers will be working with the “Hands on Learning’ students each Wednesday. A new ‘arsan’ teacher
has been appointed to lead the project. His name is Ben Cross and he has a background in building and car-
pentry. He has also been teaching students at SWTAFE. Ben will work alongside our technology teacher, An-
drew Benne so the students will certainly have great support in their chosen projects.
The ‘Hands on Learning’ program began in the late 1990s and today more than fi3y schools across the state are
delivering the program with great success. We are working in partnership with the other secondary providers in
our school network; Warrnambool College, Brauer College and Hawkesdale College.
Emergency Management-Signing in when vising the school
Can I just remind parents and visitors that it is important to sign in and out at the front office when vising the
school. An integral part of our Emergency Management procedures is to have an accurate record of who is in
the school at any given me.
VCE
On Tuesday, Semester 2 for all VCE students commenced and on Wednesday all students who are studying a
Unit 3/4 subject sat the General Achievement Test (GAT). For our Year 12 students only a lile more than a
third of their school year will be remaining at the end of this term and as I keep saying it is so important that
they make the most of every day. In order to do achieve their best, students must ensure that absences are lim-
ited as much as possible.
Greater Western Zone cross–country
On Friday fourteen of our secondary students will be compeng in the Greater Western Zone cross country to be
held in Warrnambool. Congratulaons to these students for qualifying for the event and we wish them all the
best as they compete against qualifiers from across the region.
Mortlake College is introducing the innovative (HOL) “Hands on Learning Program” commencing in Term 3.The program will run for the remainder of the year. HOL takes eight students out of class one day a week fostering teamwork and leadership. Students and two artisan-teachers share breakfast and lunch and work together to create valuable building structures for the school and community. Students apply to be part of the program and are selected by year level co-ordinators, school leadership teams and student wellbeing staff.
Any student can benefit. HOL is open to girls and boys from years 8~10 with different talents, needs and interests. Like any workplace everyone is expected to be safe, part of a team and to do the best they can. Students will appropriate foot wear and casual clothes for the day.
Students develop critical skills and abilities to succeed in work and life in the 21st Century:
Self-esteem, friendships, and a sense of belonging grow as students become more content at school. Motivation, focus and the ability to set goals increase when they return to class - building the platform for improvements in literacy and numeracy.
The opportunity to succeed in a different environment builds self-belief and confidence, making their time back in the classroom more effective. There is no cost to the student apart from a $5 per week lunch fee. HOL started at Frankston High School in 1999 and now runs in schools right across Victoria. Andrew Bennett and an appointed Artisan teacher, Ben Cross will be working with the HOL team at Mortlake College.
Any queries please contact Andrew Bennett at school and also visit the HOL web site www.handsonlearning.org.au for further information.

CATS
As I menoned last week, the school producon of CATS is drawing closer and there is a great deal of
excitement and ancipaon among the cast and crew. With just over seventy students performing on
stage and another ten working behind the scenes, the producon really is a major undertaking. Good
luck to all involved! Tickets are available at the school office so don’t miss the opportunity to see what
promises to be a fantasc show.

Ge4ng ready for Term 3: Year 5-7 Art
Next term Year 5-7 Art classes will be exploring 3d work, creang
and construcng!
One of the tasks that students will be undertaking is the creaon of
a diorama (a scene in a box) on a futurisc theme. We will be look-
ing at the following work Phantasmagoria by Diane Boulay for inspi-
raon. Another arst who students could google is Chu Enoki who
produces amazing worlds made from recycled engineering parts.
Students will need to provide a medium to smallish grocery box (not a shoe box as that is too small). Students are
encouraged to start collecng recyclables now for this task, such as: empty plasc containers (e.g; a tomato sauce
bole would make a great futurisc building); toothpaste boxes; cardboard cylinders (not toilet rolls which are pro-
hibited by Department rules); any sundry waste items – caps, lids, packaging etc. can all be transformed into some-
thing creave! I am collecng what I can, but with 60 students doing this task they will need to provide items for
themselves in order to create a successful result. A baery-operated tea light candle if you have one, (about $2),
could make an interesng feature in a corner with some coloured cellophane around it, or inside a building, so bring
that along if you do have one. Students will need to bring their box and collected items in Week 2 next term. Stu-
dents could ask Grandma, aunes or neighbours to save their recyclables to help gather sufficient items. Happy
collecng! Thank you, Annee Janes
