Morris Area Genealogy Society - 1 - Vol 18 No 2, June 2005 Morris Area Genealogy Society Newsletter Vol 18 No 2 June 2005 RECENT PROGRAMS March: Unfortunately our March meeting had to be cancelled due to the weather. Our program on German Research with speaker Tom Peters has been rescheduled for our September meeting. Check the September Newsletter for our fall programs. April: MAGS member, Michelle Chubenko, has been a professional genealogist for four years specializing in the central NJ area. She spoke to us about “Researching Your Ancestors Locality”. She told us: every time an ancestor moves, you need to start over. Start with a map of the time period for the area. Determine the distance from their location to the nearest county seat to see which one they might be likely to use. Learn the county boarder changes and what the migration routes were - did people travel by land or by water? Determine how land was obtained – was the state a deed state or a federal township system state? Learn about the geography and history of the area. May: The topic for our May meeting was Improving the Image of Genealogy or Using Your Computer to Bring Photos Back to Life”. Our speaker, Wick Smith, talked to us about the reasons to buy a scanner and told us some of the problems encountered with old photos & slides such as faded colors, lack of contrast, scratches and stains. He then scaned into his computer an old photo with plenty of tears and scratches. Using Photo Elements 2, he showed us how he repairs these problems. It was a very informative program. Special Interest groups

At our April meeting, a German Interest Group was formed. They plan to meet at theMorris County Library conference room at 10:00 one Tuesday each month. Groupmember (and our current MAGS president) Al Zimmerman says “At meetings, we shareinformation, experience, and research interests for genealogy in Germany and emigrationfrom Germany. We will continue to meet as long as there is enough interest to do so.”

The group’s aim is for people of German ancestry to move beyond genealogy in the UnitedStates. It was so well received that it feels like a good thing to do. Some members of thegroup said "This is what I was looking for when I joined MAGS."

If you are interested in joining this group, come to our next MAGS general meeting inSeptember and sign up or e-mail us at [email protected].

The foregoing comprises all the script within the Phebe DeHart Bible. Newspaper clippingspasted on inside of front cover are as follows:

Died- Henry Baker of Dover, N.J. died at his residence on Dec 10, 1894. Born in the first part ofthe century, Apl 21, 1801, he has lived in the same vicinity ever since. He was the oldest FreeMason & Odd Fellow in this part of the State, having become a member of the Lodges nearlyhalf a century ago.

When Dover was a small hamlet, his father Jeremiah Baker came from Westfield, N.J. where thegrandfather Thomas Baker, who came from England some years previous during the 1700s, hadsettled and in 1792 purchased the property which has since been in the family’s possession. Here his father established the first tannery in northern New Jersey and carried on a successfulbusiness as Tanner and Shoe Manufacturer, in addition to clearing a large portion of land forfarming purposes with his brother William. Henry Baker succeeded to his father’s business andconducted it until the close of 186- (torn) when he became interested in opening and conductingthe valuable iron mines which underlie a portion of the homestead.

They had purchased the Stephen DeHart farm on Mine Hill adjoining Govr. Dickerson’sproperty and also opened two mines on that property, one of which was operated by ScrantonBros. of Oxford Furnace for a few years but now by Joseph Wharton, of Phila.

They also owned extensive tracts of timber land which cover an area of nearly 1000 acres, extending from Berkshire Valley to Lake Hopatcong.

From their father, they inherited a grist mill and Valley Forge. All of the property has beenjointly held by the two brothers and since the death of William in 1876; the two estates haveremained intact.

Last year Henry baker purchased from the heirs of his brother William all the property west ofthe Rockaway River, about 900 acres in which they had an interest still continues in thehomestead and other property --------- he had a strong constitution: was frugal and temperate:reached an age far beyond the average allotted to man and died in full honor and was gathered tohis fathers.

Mr. Baker remained a bachelor until his 70th year, when he married Mrs L..J..Jenness of PortJervis.

On inside of front cover of the DeHart Bible also find pasted in newspaper clippings as follows:

Woodland Cemetery, Newark, NJ – Safe Day, Saturday, June 11th

The Volunteers of Woodland Cemetery, which is on South 10th St, Newark, NJ, will beholding the 8th Annual Safe Day at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 11th (rain date Sunday,June 12th). This “open house” is called Safe Day because it provides people anopportunity to visit the cemetery and their family’s gravesites in the presence of policeprotection. Many New Jersey families have ancestors or relatives from Newark and thesurrounding areas who may be buried in one of the 82,500+ graves on this deserted 35acres burial site. Over 9,500 tombstone inscriptions have been documented from 1854to 2004. Many more are needed. In addition, volunteers have been cleaning up andrestoring the cemetery over the last few years. For information on interments ordirections to the cemetery, please contact Mary E. Lish at (973) 667-0450 [email protected] or John A. Sass at (973) 748-0985 or [email protected]. They willbe there to help you to look for family interments and gravesites (see also MAGS Vol10, No 2, June 1997).
