Dr. Kenn Stryker-Rodda Inducted into the National Genealogy Hall of Fame
Since 1986 the National Genealogical Society has
administered a program that honors outstanding
genealogists whose achievements in the field of
American genealogy have had an important
impact. Nominees must have been deceased for at
least five years and have been actively engaged in
genealogy for a minimum of ten years. Their
contributions to the field of genealogy in this
country must have been significant in a way that
was unique, pioneering or exemplary.
The NGS has announced the 2006 selection of Dr.
Kenn Stryker-Rodda, who was nominated by the
American Society of Genealogists, the
Genealogical Society of New Jersey, and the New
York Genealogical and Biographical Society. Dr.
Stryker-Rodda, who was born in 1903 and died in
1990, spent four decades contributing to the field.
He was a pioneer genealogical educator and
lecturer, and authored many books and articles. In
1964 he served as a Charter Trustee for the Board
for Certification of Genealogists. Dr. Stryker-
Rodda also served as president of the
Genealogical Society of New Jersey, the
American Society of Genealogists, and the
National Genealogical Society. He spent more
than thirty years as an associate editor, first with
the Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey and
later with the New York Genealogical and
Biographical Record. Between 1960 and 1981, he
was elected a fellow of six societies - the
American Society of Genealogists, the National
Genealogical Society, the Genealogical Society of
New Jersey, the Holland Society of New York,
the New York Genealogical and Biographical
Society and the New Jersey Historical Society.
Dr. Stryker-Rodda’s area of expertise was early
New York and New Jersey. He wrote numerous
genealogical articles, and compiled a number of
family genealogies and volumes of source records,
either as sole author or with a colleague. His
contributions to the field were many and varied.
His portrait will join those of other genealogical
high achievers on the walls of the headquarters of
the National Genealogical Society.

Speakers & Topics
Cathy Thomas, Ph.D. Cathy Thomas is president of the Pidcock Family Association, founded in 1913. The Pidcock DNA Sleuth Project was launched to learn more about the relationship of her ancestors, the Pidcocks & Pitcocks of England, Colonial America and the world. She is a member of the Family History Interest Group of the Bernards Township Library. She will be speaking on:
Using DNA to Solve Genealogical Puzzles
This lecture will cover the application of DNA to trace ancestry and establish genetic relationships where family links have not been established. In addition to discussions of pitfalls and genetic surprises, specific multi-generation successes will demonstrate how the use of DNA tracing helps locate or deny previously unknown or unproven genetic relationships.
Charles F. Kerchner, Jr, P.E. Charles Kerchner has been pursuing genealogy for almost 30 years, authoring several tutorial and help papers on Pennsylvania German research. During the last five years he has been a pioneer in the new field of genetic genealogy, launching one of the first dozen surname projects by an amateur, the Kerchner Surname Project. in 2005 he helped launch the International Society of Genetic Genealogy (www.isogg.org) and serves as head of the Mid-Atlantic section. He will be speaking on:
Morris Area Genealogy Society - 10 - Vol 19 No 3, September 2006
Genetic Genealogy: An Introduction
The focus will be the technology of DNA testing as an aid to genealogical research, including basic DNA cell structure, types of DNA, DNA Markers, types of DNA tests and the DNA test process. Genome projects, genealogical surname projects, and the role of ISOGG will also be covered.
Lisa Kerr Ilowite Lisa Kerr Ilowite is a research scientist and has successfully applied her scientific research skills to genealogy for the past ten years having done research in Scotland, Northern Ireland, and England. She is a member of the International Black Sheep Society of Genealogists, the DAR, and First Families of Western Pennsylvania. She will be speaking on:
Finding a Woman’s Maiden Name (when modern technology fails)
In today’s era of high technology and DNA testing, many researchers have come to rely on the Internet and other inventions of modern science to provide all the answers to their ancestral questions. Although mitochondrial DNA (mDNA) holds promise for tracing female ancestry back through the millennia, current methods cannot provide the answer to researcher’s burning question: What was her maiden name? Finding a woman’s maiden name is the key to identifying her parents and her lineage. This presentation will review proven methods for discovering a woman’s maiden name and enabling further research into the hidden half of her family.

THE IRON ERA
The Iron Era, published in Dover, NJ, contains a wealth of information about residents of Dover and the surrounding areas in Morris County. The Morristown-Morris Township Library has microfilmed copies of the issues published from January 20, 1872 through December 10, 1905. Unfortunately, there is no index. However, toward the end of each year from 1881 through 1892, a synopsis of the year’s events was published in the newspaper. The Library’s collection includes a transcript of the synopses, Morris County History 1881-1892 [HM1/Dove/Mor] and an index of the synopses can be found on our website rootsweb.com/~njmags/.
