A flag is a wonderful thing. Every nation has a flag that

is a symbol of the people and what they hope to be.

The Book of Mormon tells about a very special flag called

the Title of Liberty. It was made by a great leader named

Moroni, who became a general of the Nephite army when

    only twenty-five years old.

With the help of the Lord, Moroni was successful in

winning many battles against the Lamanites.

Most of the Nephite people loved the Lord and wanted to

serve Him, but there was one man named Amalickiah who

wanted to become king. He gathered some of his followers

to destroy those who served God so they would not be

able to interfere with his wicked plans.

General Moroni was angry when he heard of the evil

plans of Amalickiah. In his anger Moroni tore his coat,

took a piece of it, and wrote some words upon it. Fastening

the cloth to the end of a pole, Moroni named it the Titleof Liberty.

Then Moroni went among the people waving this unusual

flag so all of the people could see what he had written. He

said to them, Whosoever will maintain this title upon the

land, let them come forth and enter into a covenant

that they will maintain their rights, and their religion,

that the Lord God may bless them.

The people were eager to do what was right and to follow

Moroni, so they made a covenant to serve God.

The words written on the Title of Liberty made the people

want to do their very best.

This proclamation was read by President Gordon B. Hinckley as part of his message at the

General Relief Society Meeting held September 23, 1995, in Salt Lake City, Utah.

WE, THE FIRST PRESIDENCY and the Council of the TwelveApostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,

solemnly proclaim that marriage between a man and a

woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to

the Creators plan for the eternal destiny of His children.

ALL HUMAN BEINGSmale and femaleare created in theimage of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of

heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and

destiny. Gender is an essential characteristic of individual

premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose.

IN THE PREMORTAL REALM, spirit sons and daughters knewand worshipped God as their Eternal Father and accepted

His plan by which His children could obtain a physical

body and gain earthly experience to progress toward per-

fection and ultimately realize their divine destiny as heirs of

eternal life. The divine plan of happiness enables family

relationships to be perpetuated beyond the grave. Sacred

ordinances and covenants available in holy temples make it

possible for individuals to return to the presence of God and

for families to be united eternally.

THE FIRST COMMANDMENT that God gave to Adam and Evepertained to their potential for parenthood as husband and

wife. We declare that Gods commandment for His children

to multiply and replenish the earth remains in force. We

further declare that God has commanded that the sacred

powers of procreation are to be employed only between

man and woman, lawfully wedded as husband and wife.

WE DECLARE the means by which mortal life is created to bedivinely appointed. We affirm the sanctity of life and of its

    importance in Gods eternal plan.

HUSBAND AND WIFE have a solemn responsibility to loveand care for each other and for their children. Children

are an heritage of the Lord (Psalm 127:3). Parents have a

sacred duty to rear their children in love and righteousness,

to provide for their physical and spiritual needs, and to

teach them to love and serve one another, observe the com-

mandments of God, and be law-abiding citizens wherever

they live. Husbands and wivesmothers and fathers

will be held accountable before God for the discharge of

    these obligations.

THE FAMILY is ordained of God. Marriage between man andwoman is essential to His eternal plan. Children are entitled

to birth within the bonds of matrimony, and to be reared by

a father and a mother who honor marital vows with com-

plete fidelity. Happiness in family life is most likely to be

achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord

Jesus Christ. Successful marriages and families are estab-

lished and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repen-

tance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and

wholesome recreational activities. By divine design, fathers

are to preside over their families in love and righteousness

and are responsible to provide the necessities of life and

protection for their families. Mothers are primarily respon-

sible for the nurture of their children. In these sacred re-

sponsibilities, fathers and mothers are obligated to help one

another as equal partners. Disability, death, or other circum-

stances may necessitate individual adaptation. Extended

families should lend support when needed.

WE WARN that individuals who violate covenants ofchastity, who abuse spouse or offspring, or who fail to ful-fill family responsibilities will one day stand accountable

before God. Further, we warn that the disintegration of

the family will bring upon individuals, communities, and

nations the calamities foretold by ancient and modern

    prophets.

WE CALL UPON responsible citizens and officers of gov-ernment everywhere to promote those measures designed

to maintain and strengthen the family as the fundamental

    unit of society.

Amalickiah was a wicked man. He prom-

ised the Nephites many things if they would

make him the king. Many people believed

him and turned away from righteousness.

Moroni was the captain over the Nephite armies. He was righteous and believed in Jesus Christ. When

Moroni heard that many people were being led away by

Amalickiah, Moroni became angry with him. He knew

the people were in danger of losing their freedom.

Moroni tore off a piece of his coat and wrote on it,

In memory of our God, our religion, and freedom, and

our peace, our wives, and our children (Alma 46:12).

He fastened the fabric to the end of a pole and called

it the title of liberty. Then he prayed for the people and

visited them, waving the title of liberty and calling on

the Nephites to join him in protecting their freedom

    (see Alma 46:121).

You live in a day when there are people like

Amalickiah who want to lead us away from following

Heavenly Fathers plan. One of the most important parts

    of that plan is families.

Heavenly Father wants members of the Church to

understand His plan for families. The First Presidency and

the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles wrote The Family:

A Proclamation to the World to declare what we believeabout families. Like the title of liberty, the proclamation

can encourage us to remember and explain what we

    believe.

StoryPrint off and laminate the story. Read the story together and talk about

how we can have a stronger family. Then print off, and cut out the 2 pages

of the house parts. You will want to glue the words to the back of each

part of the house. Then laminate. Have your child pick each piece of the

house, read the back to them and accomplish the challenge. When you haveaccomplished the challenge you can tack the piece to the fridge or a board

till the whole house is together.

I looked down at my feet. I dont think that.

Good! Because youre not smart. Youre a freak!

Yeah. Kylie laughed. And a geek.

Janna stepped closer. I dont like you, she said,

and I dont like you in our class.

    Whats the problem?

I turned to find my brother David standing beside me.

Janna stepped back. This little nerd thinks shes

    smarter than me.

Shes not a nerd. Shes my sister. David put his

hand on my shoulder. And she hasnt done anything

to you. If you keep being mean to her, Im going to

    hear about it.

Janna looked at my brother. He was taller and wider

than she was. What grade are you in? she asked.

    Sixth.

Oh, she said. She and Kylie took a few more steps

back. Well, OK. Well leave her alone.

David turned me around and guided me to the bus.

Then he went to join his friends.

I got on the bus and sat down, feeling a little dazed.

I couldnt believe it. David had stood up for me! I

knew then that even though we didnt always get

along, David was my brother and he loved me. I

suddenly felt very grateful for him.

At dinner that night, David seemed surprised when

he noticed the red plate at his seat. Whats this for? he

    asked.

I put it there, I said. Its for being a great older

    brother.

David laughed as I told our parents what had

happened. I made David sound like a superhero.

Were proud of you for helping your sister, Dad

    said.

David smiled. Its good to be a hero, he said.

I grinned at him. Its even better to have one as

    an older brother.

We often take our families . . . for granted.

But in times of danger and need and change,

there is no question that what we care about

    most is our families!

Instructions: Remove these two pages from the magazine andglue them onto heavier paper. (You can also copy them or print them

from friend.lds.org.) Cut out the pieces of the house and the descriptions

that go with them. As you put the house together, read the description

for each piece. When the house is complete, think about the things you

could do to help make your own house a happy home. You can also do

this activity with your family during a few family home evenings.

ServiceIn Matthew 25:3540, Jesus teaches that when we serve others we are also

serving Him. When you serve your family members, it shows you love them

and want them to be happy. You can strengthen your love asyou serve each

other, and as your family serves others. Service will bring joy and happinessinto your lives and into the lives of those you serve. Think of a few things

you can do to serve your family members. Then help your family think of a

    way you can serve together.

SupportJust as a house needs a strong foundation,

you and your family members need each

others support. In the Book of Mormon,

King Benjamin said that Jesus Christ is sup-

porting you from one moment to another

(Mosiah 2:21). Try to follow His example.

Something as simple as a smile can showyour sister that you care about her. Maybe

your dad is having a hard day, or your

brother is worried about a test at school.

Or maybe youre happy because someone

made breakfast for you. What could you

do to show that you support and love your

    family?

PrayerHeavenly Father hears every prayer that

you and your family say. In 3 Nephi 18:21,Jesus tells us that we should pray with our

families. Having family prayer can bring

your family closer together as you ask for

blessings for each other and thank Heavenly

Father for the things He has given you. As

you pray every day, you will feel the com-

fort and warmth of the Holy Ghost in your

life and in your home. Think of a blessing

that someone in your family might need.

Ask your mom or dad if it can be included

    in your next family prayer.

    ForgivenessYour little brother just broke

your favorite toy. Are you going

to yell at him, or are you going to

forgive him? Sometimes it is hard

to forgive someone who has hurt

you. But forgiveness is an impor-

tant part of having a loving and

    happy home. Heavenly Father

is happy to forgive us when

    we repent of doing something

wrong, and He wants us to be

kind and forgiving of our family

    members. Think about the story

    of how Josephs brothers sold

him into Egypt, and then read

    how Joseph forgave them in

    Genesis 45:115.

FaithFaith in Jesus Christ is an

    important gospel principle.

    Even though you cant see

Jesus, you and your familycan trust in Him and try to

    follow His commandments.

    Think of the faith Lehis

    family needed when they

    left their home in Jerusalem,

    and the faith Noahs fam-

    ily needed when they went

    into the ark. Having faith

in Christ and in His gospel

    can bring happiness and

    peace to your family, even

if youre having a hard time.

    In Alma 32:2631 you will

nd an experiment aboutfaith that the prophet Alma

    asks you to try.
