SITE DESCRIPTION

Mission: "Working through kingdom building."

Location: 5801 State Street East St. Louis

The Lab: Updating a preexisting lab that equipped with 8 computers (win95) installed by LIS 451 team in 2002. The lab (17”x10”) is located by the main entrance and maintained by church volunteers and the Technology Ministry.

MSMBS Implementation Plan: Actual Implementation Inventorying: We inventoried initially assigned 8 computers. Then

we replaced them with a new set of recently donated 8 computers and inventorying them.

Refurbishing workstations: Win2000 install, Driver Installation, Critical and Recommended Windows Updates, Setting up Network, Installing Spring 06 Software, Updating Anti-Virus and Anti-Spy ware.

Refurbishing the server: Installing Linux Fedora and set it up to be used as a file sharing and web server. (Martin did all the job--Thanks!)

Providing Additional Software: Incidentally, throughout the semester we located various internet resources and free software that could be utilized by the source. The resources we found are included in our inventory page.

and Pastor Hubbard. Erin informed the rest of the group. Samples from e-mails between Erin and Pastor Hubbard:3/16/o6: Sent MSMBC first email confirming objectives for computer lab.  Received response

from Kaitroy Hubbard approving of the plan.3/31/06: Responded to Pastor Hubbard about the tech classes and the computer giveaway;

waiting to hear back from him about the layout of the computers ALREADY IN the church that they would like to network

4/3/06: Discussed the tech classes with Paul Adams over email, he planned to communicate with MSMBC's staff about the next opportunity to participate.

4/11/06: Replied to his email with a run-down of our schedule for the final visit and lab implementation.  Received an email the next day confirming.

5/8/06: Received a phone call from Pastor Hubbard regarding the date of return for the computers we brought back to Champaign with us to fix.  Talked with team and emailed Vicki Eddings to confirm that she would be able to bring them back to East St. Louis on her next trip (5/22/06).

5/9/06: Received an email from Vicki - she will bring the computers back with her.  Completed installations on the computers - they are ready to go.  Called Pastor Hubbard to inform him of the return date.  Replied to Vicki's email confirming that the computers are done and waiting at Prairienet.

Problems & Solutions: Anticipated

Problems & Solutions: Encountered Before lab set-up:We had problem locating the right network driver. After a long search with nosolution, Dines suggested putting new network cars. The problem was solvedonce we placed new network cards.

During lab set-up:The anticipated problems did not cause us difficulty as we were provided with extraextension cords and the church staff decided not to network lab with the officecomputers. In addition, they were not ready to get lab computers to be connectedto the internet. All we needed to do was to set up the computers and network themtogether. Because we had all the work done before going to the site, we had asmooth set up. The entire lab was set in less than 2hrs. We used the remainingtime of the same day for doing extra maintenance (check & fix disk, defragment,setting up restricted user accounts)

Problems & Solutions: Encountered (cont.)

After lab set-up:Problems:On Saturday we spend our time trying to upgrade old computers fromWin95 to Win98 to be distributed to the youth in the community.Unfortunately we faced multiple complications: Not having appropriate disks installed, No all boot floppy, No way to change the boot order to boot from the CD, Incompatible hardware, etc. A scheduled wedding at 2:00pm.Solutions:We decided to bring the three computers we worked on/brokeback to Champaign to fix. As of 5/9/06, they were ready to return toMSMBC (with Windows 98 installed and software updates) with Vicky,who makes regular trips to East St. Louis (A special thanks to Dinesh for his time andsupport!)

Review of Lessons Learned Troubleshooting: Do not get stuck with one way of solving a problem,

think of other ways if that doesn’t work

Communication: Establish continuous and clear communication (within group and between group and the site) and be creative in ways to communicate.

Getting help: Learn from the experience and the knowledge of others (mainly Martin & Dinesh)

Making promises: Make sure you can do what you promise to do.

Experience: Take the time as an opportunity to learn both about hardware and software and also about the people you work with and make the best out of it.
