(BPT) - Spring cleaning isn’t justfor your home - it’s a smart thing to

do for your vehicles, too. Afew simple steps can helpboost your vehicle’s integri-ty and beauty while main-taining its value, plus youmight even regain thatnew-car smell.

1. Your car is areflection of who

you areThere’s no question

your car is a reflection onyou. Whether it’s all about

horsepower, efficient gas mileage or four-wheel drive, yourvehicle represents who you are, where you’ve been andwhere you intend to go.

The design, form and function are extensions of your styleand personality. So, if you haven’t given it a wash in a while, what does that say about you? You wouldn’t walk out the doorwithout a shower, a shave and a little spruce up. (Would you?)So why shouldn’t you show that same respect for your car?

From dirt and dust to grit and grime, give that car itsreflective shine at a WaterSavers car wash. WaterSavers pro-fessional car washes use an average of 40 gallons of freshwater or less per car, according to the International CarwashAssociation.

As a frame of reference, that 10 minute shower you tookused 25 gallons of fresh water. WaterSavers washes also recy-cle and filter the water to prevent harmful chemicals fromentering groundwater supplies that feed rivers and streams. To find a WaterSavers car wash near you, visit Washwithwa-tersavers.com.

2 . Regular car washes protect your paint jobThat beautiful factory paint job will dull and begin to chip

away if you don’t maintain it. Regularly washing your car andwaxing it will help keep your car looking as good as it didwhen you pulled out of the dealer lot.

3. Professional car washes help maintain the valueof the vehicle

You might be more inclined to spend money on engineissues than the car’s exterior, but stains and rusting can drasti-cally decrease the value of the vehicle over time.

Especially after a long winter, exposure to the elements cancause damage. Professional car washes thoroughly clean theundercarriage of your vehicle, where there may be a buildupof road salt that could cause corrosion to the car’s exhaustandmuffler system.

(NAPS)—It’s a cold, hard fact: Icy roads are dangerous foreven the most experienced driver, and even in dry weather, multicar pileups have closed interstates.

If you’re ever involved in an accident on the highway, takeheed of a particular hazard: In many cases, people in multiple-vehicle accidents are hurt or even killed after surviving theinitial crash largely unscathed. Three things to remember toavoid being among them are:

1. Stay Inside: Stay in your car.According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Adminis-

tration, about 16 percent of pedestrian traffic deaths occur onfreeways. People who get out of their cars are killed andinjured far more often than those who stay inside;

2. Stay Belted:Even those who do stay in the car but unbuckle their seat

belt are more easily and severely hurt by subsequent cars thatpile into them;

3. Stay Calm and Connected:Don’t panic and don’t get into a discussion on the spot with

another driver. Do try to signal the other drivers to get off theroad to somewhere safe where you can exchange informationand contact the police.

As one California Highway Patrol officer put it, “The bestsafe practice would be to stay in your vehicle with your seat

belt on. If your vehicle is drivable, we always recommend get-ting out of the roadway.

Bottom line: The freeway is a very dangerous place forpedestrians to be, and people need to realize that the potentialfor major injuries or death skyrockets as opposed to being inyour car with your seat belt on.”

Added an EMT after a crash, “Never, never, NEVER getout of your car on a roadway unless your life is in imminentdanger if you do not.

“I can’t stress how dangerous it is to ever get out of yourcar on a road. You have absolutely no protection if someoneplows into you, and if you are stopped, chances are muchhigher that someone will get hurt than if traffic were movingnormally.

Plus, if you are out of your car, busy exchanging informa-tion with someone else while standing in the road, you aren’tpaying 100 percent attention to what might be coming upbehind you, lessening your chances of getting out of the waywhen something goes wrong.”

If you’re ever in an accident on the highway, drive off the road if you can and don’t

unbuckle your seat belt or get out of your car.

(Family Features) It’s a situation that has likely happenedto you. You’re driving down the road when out of nowhere thewords “check engine” illuminate from the dashboard. Whilethis glowing symbol may cause youto panic, there are a few things youshould know about this commonissue.

“Motorists should not getspooked when the check enginelight comes on,” said Rich White, executive director of the Car CareCouncil. “When illuminated, thecheck engine light usually meansthat a vehicle system, such as theignition, fuel injection or emissioncontrol, is not operating properly.”

List of common causesCommon malfunctions that can cause the check engine

light to illuminate include a faulty oxygen sensor, mass airflow sensor, or spark plugs and wires. If the light flashes, thecondition is more critical and must be checked immediately toprevent severe damage, which may include catalytic convert-er damage.

“Even if the vehicle appears to be running normally, ignor-ing the warning light could result in more costly repairs,” con-tinued White. “At the very least, the light could be alerting

you to an engine problem that is neg-atively impacting fuel economy andcosting youmoney.”

Seek professional assistanceWhen scheduling service, make

sure the repair shop that examinesyour vehicle has professional techni-cians who are trained and certified inOBDII diagnosis and repair. Thetechnician will connect your vehicle’scomputer system to a diagnosticscan tool, which will provide troublecodes indicating why the checkengine light was activated. Once theproblem is identified and the repair

is made, the car’s computer is then reset.

(NAPS)—To help you avoid getting stranded with a deadcar battery on your next family road trip, Gale Kimbrough, also known as “Mr. Battery,” offers these suggestions:

Helpful Hints1. Take a few minutes to read about your battery in your

car’s manual and become familiar with the type of battery it is,where it is and how it can be cleaned safely.

2. At the start of each new season, check the battery tomake sure it is still fully charged for the excursions ahead.

3. When working with your car battery, wear protectiveeyewear, remove all jewelry and wear long sleeves to protectyour arms from battery acid discharge.

4. Perform a visual inspection to see if the battery case isshowing signs of extreme bulging, cracking or leaking.Replace your battery if you see any of these signs.

5. If your battery has removable filler caps, open them andcheck the water level in each cell. If the level is low, add dis-tilled water (not tap water) until the plates are covered, prefer-ably to one-half inch above the plates. This prevents thebuildup of sulfate crystals, which can reduce the overall bat-tery charge and performance.

6. Avoid overfilling, because heat can cause the electrolytesolution inside to expand and overflow.

7. Clean up the connections by removing any corrosionand lead oxidation and make sure to brush the dirt and grimeoff the case.

8. To remove the battery cables, first disconnect the nega-tive cables and then the positive. To reinstall the cables, firstconnect the positive cables and then the negative.

9. Be sure the battery is mounted securely in place to mini-mize vibration. Excessive vibration is harmful to the batteryplates and terminals and could lead to battery failure. Aftercompleting reconnection, use a protective spray on the termi-nal connections.

10. Have your battery and electrical system professionallytested every three to six months, especially prior to headingout on a trip or extreme changes in temperature.

In just 30 seconds, Interstate All Battery Center locationscan provide a free printed analysis of your vehicle battery con-dition.

(NAPS)—When the smells of mud, slush, cigarettes, pets, food spills and so on linger in your car, you can drive themaway if you know a few facts and hints.

While common air fresheners use perfumes to try to coverup the smell, they provide only temporary relief that doesn’toften cover the entire vehicle. To truly eliminate odor, youhave to control the cause.

To that end, there’s an odor eliminator that uses ClO2 tech-nology. It controls odor-causing bacteria, eliminating even thefoulest smells quickly and permanently.

The EPA-registered, patented technology of Star brite AutoOdor Eliminator is easy to use. Its deep-penetrating vapor getsinto all areas of your car’s interior—under seats, into theupholstery and throughout the ventilation system—andworks within hours. It’s also a great way to remove odorsfrom RVs or boats that have been in seasonal storage.

Once you’ve eliminated bad odors, keep your car smellingsweet: Vacuum it whenever you wash it; make sure there are

no food wrappers, cigarette butts or dirty clothes lyingaround; and don’t let anyone smoke in it.

(Family Features) As warmer weather approaches, carlovers are eager to raise the garage doors and get behind thewheel to experience the thrill of the open road. Keeping yourcar in top condition lets you enjoy those moments to thefullest.

“Choosing the right products for detailing and restorationcan really make a difference when preserving your vehicle,”said Craig Jackson, Barrett-Jackson chairman and chief exec-utive officer. “When you’re giving your car a full detail or evenjust a quick touch-up, you want to feel confident that yourvehicle is protected and looks its best. Now you can bring themillion dollar look of Barrett-Jackson home.”

Whether it’s an older model you’ve lovingly restored or amore contemporary vehicle you want to keep looking like amillion dollars, these tips will help maintain the appearance(and value) of your vehicle so you’re ready to roll in style.

ExteriorA thorough cleaning will help shed accumulated dirt and

sediment from a harsh winter, especially for a vehicle that isdriven year round. Give special attention to the undercarriage, where potentially destructive materials such as salt canbecome trapped and corrosive. Even if your car is garaged forthe winter, a wash is a good starting place to rinse away dustand start the season fresh.

Tires send a strong message about your vehicle. Brakedust, grime and dirt can give your car a dull and aged appear-ance, so take time to scrub not only the tires themselves, butalso the wheels and surrounding carriage. Add shine with awater-based spray formula that contains silicone emulsions topenetrate the rubber.

Finish with a wax that gives an extra element of shinewhile protecting the finish in between washes. Barrett-Jack-son’s Rapid Detailer and Liquid Wax Kit, which includes Liq-uid Wax, applicator pad and microfiber towel, provides a deep, wet shine with no residue and long-lasting durability. Formu-lated with hydrophobic polymers and genuine carnauba wax,it works on all exterior surfaces including plastic, rubber andtrim.

In addition to using quality detailing products, it’s alsoimportant to make sure you have the right car care acces-sories as well. Use a sponge or cleaning mitten that’s made forwashing cars instead of an old rag. When applying wax, itsbest to use an applicator pad, or even better, buy a wax kit thatincludes one. Using a microfiber towel is great for buffing offwax or polishing interior and will not leave the lint typical of acotton towel.

InteriorEven if you’re meticulous about your car’s interior, odds

and ends still find their way into crevices and under seats.Take a few moments to clear debris and then vacuum all overto remove any smaller particles.

An important aspect of keeping the interior looking newand healthy is replacing the moisture depleted by the sun’sharsh glare. One good option is a premium three-in-one prod-uct such as Barrett-Jackson Leather Cleaner & Conditioner, which contains glycerin moisturizers to clean, moisturize andprotect leather. It can be used on leather and trim, and pro-vides UV protection to help prevent fading, cracking and dis-coloration.

(Family Features) If your upcoming travel plans include aroad trip, the last thing you want is unexpected car trouble toleave you stranded at the side of the road. A pre-trip vehiclecheck is the best way to ensure that your car is ready to getyou to your destina-tion.

“Taking steps tohave auto repairs per-formed before longdistance driving willnot only give youpeace of mind, butwill also help avoidthe inconvenienceand potential safetyhazards of breakingdown when you’remiles from home,”said Rich White, exec-utive director of theCar Care Council.

Protect your vehi-cle and your own safe-ty by following theserecommendationsfrom the Car CareCouncil and completea thorough pre-trip checklist before hitting the road:

* Check the brake system and make sure the battery con-nection is clean, tight and corrosion-free.

* Check filters and fluids, including engine oil, power steer-ing and brake and transmission, as well as windshield washersolvent and coolant. Dirty air filters can waste gas and causethe engine to lose power.

* Check hoses and belts that can become cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or show signs of excessive wear. These are criti-cal to the proper functioning of the electrical system, air condi-tioning, power steering and the cooling system.

* Check the tires, including tire pres-sure and tread.Underinflated tiresreduce a vehicle’s fueleconomy and unevenwear indicates a needfor wheel alignment.Tires should also bechecked for bulgesand bald spots.

* Check that thegas cap is not dam-aged, loose or missingto prevent gas fromspilling or evaporat-ing.

Russell Shepherd, a mechanical engineer for MichelinNorth America and self-proclaimed “tire nerd,” has certainlyearned his informal title as evident by his 15 years of drivingin almost every type of weather condition imaginable. Mostconcerning for him — wet weather.

“Most peopledon’t realize howmuch wet roadsaf fect their driv-ing,” says Shep-herd. “When roadsbecome wet, ittakes longer tostop and moretime to react, mak-ing it more impor-tant than normal topay attention toyour car and otherdrivers.”

So, what canthe average driverdo? Shepard sug-gests getting to thebottom of thingsfirst — with thetires. Here aresome tips:

* Check all tires regularly for tread wear and pressure.Changes in season and temperatures make it a good time tocheck both.

* Be cautious from the start. As soon as it starts raining, traction can become negatively affected. It only takes a smallamount of water to mix with oil and dust to create a slick sur-face.

*Find the right tire. A tire with a grip designed to handlewet roads, such as the new Michelin Premier A/S tire, canmake a big difference. This tire has a unique rubber com-pound engineered to maximize traction, and two sets ofgrooves to help channel water away from the tires to maintain

that traction. Thesecond set ofgrooves is hiddenwhen the tire isnew, but emergesas the tire wears.

This distinctivedesign featuremaintains thetire’s ability to fun-nel water away, even when worn, which prolongsthe life of the tireand enhancesdriver safety.

* Get in touchwith your car.Take time to learnhow your carresponds on wetroads. Is the steer-ing looser than

normal? Are you sliding when you brake? Do you notice theABS (Anti-lock Braking System) kicking in? If so, your tirescould be losing their grip. Slow down and get your tireschecked as soon as possible.

Maps still help with summer trips

(NewsUSA) - It’s the season of sunshine and road trips —and if you want to get the most out of your four-wheeledadventure, you better pack a map to go along with that elec-tronic GPS.

“The best reason to keep paper maps in your vehicle, espe-cially on long road trips, is because GPS isn’t always reliable,”says Cynthia Ochterbeck, editorial director of Michelin TravelPartner.

Confirming this trend, a 2013 Harris Interactive survey of2,200 U.S. drivers who use GPS found that 63 percent say thatthe technology has led them astray at least once by pointingthem in the wrong direction or creating complex, confusingand incorrect routes.

So, while it may seem that paper maps have gone the wayof Atari’s Pong, they are still just as important as ever— not tomention many other benefits that you don’t get with someGPS devices.

“One of the greatest characteristics of paper maps is thatyou get all of the details, [such as] points of interest,” saysOchterbeck. “Plus, you don’t risk getting lost when you losethe signal or the battery dies on your cell phone or GPSdevice.”

Another benefit is that, in addition to printed maps provid-ing efficient ways of understanding road networks that sur-round particular areas, the information is very reliable. Plus, new specialized maps, like Michelin’s ZoomMaps, are aimingto enhance the paper map experience.

Most people recognize Michelin for its tires, but, unknownto many, it also has a 112-year history of creating maps andtravel guides. In fact, it provided the maps that were used bythe Allies for the D-Day invasion.

Improving on this history, the new ZoomMaps offer sevenregional maps for travel in the U.S., with the ability to zoom inonmore detail in urban areas.

In addition, the new maps have a “not-to-be-missed” eventcalendar for regions, in an easy-to-fold system so you don’thave to unfold the entire map.

“Technology is great, but a printed map is one of the mostimportant tools a traveler in an unfamiliar setting can have —the battery doesn’t die, it is easy to use, and it allows you tomake decisions on route changes if necessary,” says Ochter-beck. “Even better, there are no roaming or data charges toworry about.”

(NAPS)—As the weather gets warm, vacationers willbegin to set their sights on the open road. Whether it’s to getup close to that landmark that you’ve always wanted to see, visit old friends or visit extended family who live just a fewstates away, road trips offer great flexibility and excitement.

While just about any vehicle will serve its purpose for aroad trip, there are ways to modify a car or truck to make theexperience more convenient and comfortable. In fact, the Spe-cialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) estimates thatAmericans spend $33 billion annually on products thatenhance the performance and styling of today’s vehicles.

“There is something exhilarating about a leisurely drive, whether it’s sitting in a comfortable air-conditioned car with agreat sound system or in a convertible with the top down,”said Peter MacGillivray, SEMA VP of communications andevents. “What’s really great is being able to personalize thevehicle to fit the needs of the drivers and passengers.”

Below are a few tips and tricks on how you can make yourvehicle ready for your next big road trip.

• To protect the vehicle’s exterior from any rocky weatherand/or road conditions, a paint protection film is an effectiveway to preserve the finish of your car, truck or SUV. For bestresults, this film should be professionally installed and appliedon areas such as the hood, bumpers, mirror backs and otherplaces that might be prone to scratches and chips.

• Don’t underestimate the impact a good navigation sys-tem can have on your road trip. Aftermarket GPS and naviga-tion systems with state-of-the-art technologies can be installedin just about any vehicle. Starting as low as $50, there are tonsof options available to help you stay within your budget andget you to your destination.

• Finding enough space is often a problem encoun-tered when traveling on a road trip. To make room for person-al items, consider a roof rack or cargo box to transport large

pieces of luggage. Organizers for the trunk, center consoleand on the back of seats are available to help keep items inorder and in arms’ reach.

New valve and sensing technology(NewsUSA) - “Innovation” is a term companies use quite

often. While many companies are quick to brand themselvesas inventive, very few have the legacy and pioneering spirit tobe truly innovative. But occasionally, a few great companiesmanage to prove their claims of innovation by successfullyextending core technologies into new fields and applications.

You may be grasping at air when you try to explain valveand sensing technologies to a friend. While many don’t see orinteract with these technologies on a daily basis, they are uti-lized in applications that many customers and end-users useeach and every day -; and the roles these technologies play inyour everyday safety and comfort shouldn’t go unnoticed. One such valve and sensing technology manufacturer,Schrader, takes innovation seriously.

“Since 1891, our valve and sensing technology has played acritical safety role within global automotive applications. Weinvented the first pneumatic tire valve, the very same valveused on every vehicle in the world today.

More recently, we pioneered tire pressure monitoring sys-tems (TPMS), now required on all new vehicles in NorthAmerica, and growing in European and Asian-Pacific coun-tries,” says Paul Wise, director of marketing at Schrader.“However, what differentiates Schrader is our ability to extendthese foundational technologies to new markets and applica-tions.”

For example, Schrader has been successful in adapting itssensor technology to monitor power transmission belts andindustrial hoses, which are found in diverse applications forfactory equipment, construction, agriculture, robotics and oth-er markets as well.

“Many of these applications are considered ‘capital equip-ment,’ meaning when the piece of equipment is down becauseof a broken belt or a burst hose, it translates to a real opera-tional cost to owners,” said EndaMcCloskey, vice president of

technology, Schrader. “Our new belt and hose monitoring sys-tems remove the guess work about when to perform criticalmaintenance.”

Schrader valve and sensing technology within automotiveapplications helps to save lives, reduce fuel costs, and reduceenvironmental impact via TPMS. Additionally, Schrader’s con-tinued history of innovation has resulted in an all-electric wayto better measure fuel levels in gas tanks as well as new flexfuel sensors for hybrid vehicles — its technology has evenexpanded to the medical field, including oxygen monitoringfor hospital and patient environments.
