Lost and Found Reminder

On Monday December 9th, all lost and found

items will be put on display at the front of the

school. These items will remain available to stu-

dents and parents until December 18st when

they will be packed up and sent to Stretch.

Items collected after December 12th will not be

included in this culling, but will remain at the

school until the March Break.

Be Vigilant - Keep Checking for Lice and Nits

As you may be aware, according to York Region District School Board policy, a

student with lice or nits must be removed from class

and may not return to class until ALL nits (eggs) have

been removed from the hair. Please take a moment to

check your child‟s head on a regular basis. In order

for the school to facilitate classroom checks, we re-

quire volunteers. If you would like to be trained to

check for lice, please contact the school. For fur-

ther information about Head Lice please contact

York Region Public Health Services.

Christmas Gift Giving

As staff and students plan for the holidays they have been discussing

gift giving. If your family has been considering the purchase of a gift

for their teacher, please consider a donation to: “Free The Children”

in their honour. Both staff and the student team support this idea.

Office Message

Safety and Inclusivity is the focus for all our students at

Morning Glory Public School

As some of our students have life-threatening allergies to peanuts/nuts

and nut products, we would like to remind parents that we are a nut

safe school. We also do not allow Nutella or Wow Butter . Although

Wow Butter is nut free, it is not really safe as it presents just as much

anxiety and stress to the child with anaphylaxis nut allergies as the

real thing. Think about it in the same way we do replica guns - they may

not hurt you, but they are still pretty threatening to some. If you have

any questions or concerns please call the office at 705-437-1537.

Focused on Instruction

As we try to cut down on interruptions in the class-

rooms during instructional time, parents must help

us by sending notes with their child or by calling the

office before lunch if any bus changes are to be

made. This applies to early pick up as well. We un-

derstand emergencies and that plans can change last

minute and we will always try to accommodate these requests, but we

do need to make improvements in this area..

Snowball Reminder

Please discuss at home as students who do not meet the

expectations will receive consequences.

Snow Must Stay Out Of Hands And On The Ground At All Times.

Students are aware of the following consequences: 1st incident: note to student and yard privileges temporarily removed

2nd incident: warning letter/phone call goes home; yard

privileges removed

3rd incident: phone call home/meeting with parent(s); yard

privileges removed; possibility of suspension

(see below).

Injury to a student could result in suspension even for a first incident. We

appreciate your support in all matters relating to your child(ren)‟s safety.

MGPS SNOW FORT MOTTO

YOU DIDN’T MAKE IT— YOU DON’T BREAK IT!

Winter Sun Safety

It’s true. The winter sun contains UV rays and sunburns do

occur, even though it is cold outside.

Winter sun facts: Snow reflects up to 80 per cent of UV rays, which bounce

off the ground, so sunburns can occur in unusual areas

(e.g., under the chin)

Sports at higher altitudes increase the risk of serious sun-

burn, as there is less atmosphere to block the sun’s rays

“Snow blindness” can occur if your eyes are unprotected -

eyes can temporarily feel gritty and watery

Protect yourself:

Cover up! When outside, wear protective clothing and a hat

Wear sunglasses with 100 per cent UVA and UVB protection. Close-fitting, wrap-

around styles can offer greater protection

Use a sunscreen and lip balm SPF 30 or higher

Remember to apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before going outdoors and reapply

All students at MGPS have received Bus Safety sessions from our

school bus drivers. Responsibilities when riding the School Bus were

explained to all students.

Students are responsible to the principal for their conduct on the bus and

are asked to listen to instructions from the driver. Student

conduct that endangers safety or the health of others may result in the

loss of transportation privileges.

Please remind your children of the expectations when riding the school

bus. Thank you for your ongoing support by encouraging the following ap-

propriate behaviour:

Students shall: Arrive at the bus stop at least 5 minutes before the scheduled pick up

time

Refrain from boisterous behavior, fighting and the use of profane lan-

guage

Remain seated at all times

Eating, drinking or littering is not allowed

Be responsible for any wilful damage or vandalism to the school bus

The Pledge

Please join us. All staff and stu-

dents at MGPS took the pledge

on November 19th. Speak about

this at home and take the pledge

together as a family.

French Immersion Information Sessions and Registrations

Information sessions for the French Immersion (FI) program will

take place at Keswick Public School on January 15, 2015 at 7 p.m.

FI registration will begin January 16, 2015. In order to streamline

the registration process, parents or guardians of Senior Kinder-

garten students entering Grade 1 in 2015, and wishing to enroll in

the FI Program, can visit or call the Morning Glory school office

and request an Office Index Card - short version. The Office In-

dex Card must be signed by the principal of the home school

(Morning Glory Public School). Parents or guardians then take this

form, along with one piece of identification showing their address

to Keswick Public School to register between January 16 and Feb-

ruary 13, 2015. This eliminates the need to provide duplicate en-

rollment information or to pre-register.

YRDSB‟s FI Accommodation Plan provides long-term consistency

and equity of access to all students in York Region and will enable

YRDSB to continue to offer the FI program to all who wish to en-

roll. The FI program will be offered in Dual Track or Single Track

settings, in a variety of configurations. In order to meet commu-

nity needs and optimize available space in our schools, a commu-

nity's Grade 1-8 FI program may be provided over more than one

school during the course of a student's FI education. This will al-

low flexibility in addressing community needs and the opportunity

to use existing space in schools. More information is available on

the Board‟s website: www.yrdsb.ca. Please note: Some of the FI

accommodation plans will require facility modifications or the de-

velopment of new schools and will require short-term transition

plans that might include overflow while we work toward the long-

term vision. Overflow refers to situations in which the Board di-

rects students to attend a school other than their community

school or optional program for a specific period of time, as defined

in Policy #108.

School Bus Cancellation Notice

On occasion, service cancellation due to inclement weather conditions may

be required. A decision to cancel school bus transportation may be system

wide (where all buses in York Region are cancelled) or municipality spe-

cific (where buses in one or more municipalities

are cancelled). Parents, students and school

staff are asked to access local radio and televi-

sion stations after 6:00 a.m. to receive bus can-

cellation information. A bus cancellation

message will also be available at:

www.schoolbuscity.com and 1-877-330-3001.

Something to keep in mind:

♦ If buses are cancelled in the morning, they will not operate in the

afternoon. Therefore, students transported to school by parents will

require the same transportation home. Student Transportation Services

puts student safety first, and thanks you for your cooperation and

understanding.

Kindergarten Registration to Commence January 12, 2015

Kindergarten registration will commence on

January 12, 2015 for the 2015-16 school year.

Registration forms are available on YRDSB‟s

website: www.yrdsb.edu.on.ca. Children who

turn four or five years old during 2015, live

within the school boundary and whose parents are public

school tax supporters will be eligible to register for kinder-

garten. A kindergarten information session for parents is be-

ing planned for this spring. For more information please visit

the YRDSB website or contact your local school.

Pledge In Action

To see our students in action visit our school website at:

http://www.yrdsb.ca/schools/morningglory.ps

Please note that all students at MGPS took the Pledge during anti-bullying week and the Pledge was sent home to be shared with parents.

Congratulations to the Intermediate Girls’ Volleyball Team on

their 2nd place season finish! The girls have exhibited great

results along with excellent and sportsmanship all season! 1st

place at the Sutton Public School tournament and 3rd place at

the R.L. Graham tournament. Great work ladies! We are proud

of your tremendous improvement! Team members: Rachel, Emily, Rebecca, Grace, Savannah Nicole,

Rachel, Keelan, Anna, and Taylor. Ms. Symes and Mrs. Stapleton

The Senior Boys’ Volleyball Team finished third in the R.L.

Graham Invitational, played on November 12th and showed some

great skill and teamwork.

On November 26th, 9 athletes took part in the Area tournament

at Sutton High. The team cruised through the first three round

robin games beating WJ Watson, Fairwood and Jersey. We lost a

close one to Deer Park by a score of 25- 22. The next game was

against RL Graham. The game was close, but we ended up losing

25- 23 and unfortunately, we didn‟t have enough points to

advance to the final round.

Thank you to a great group of young men, to the staff and stu-

dents of Sutton High for hosting the tournament, and to the

parents who drove and supported our team.

Team members are: Will, Markus , Nick, Nolan Tyler, Doug ,

Cole , Brandon , Colton, and Josh.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

As the holiday season approaches, staff and students are thinking about how we can make a difference in the lives of

others. Our “WE SCARE HUNGER” campaign was an incredible success! We sent over 1800 products to our local food

bank, the Georgina Food Pantry. Thank you goes out to our grade 7/8 „WE DAY‟ students for organizing this drive. As

well, a huge thank you goes out to all of our families who donated food to this program!

Now we are thinking about global action we can take to make a difference in our world. In the past several years, many of our Morning Glory families have

given a donation to “Free the Children” as a Christmas gift to a staff member.

If you are considering a gift for a staff member, please consider donating a sum of money to “Free the Children” in honour of that person(s).

Last year, we sent about $1000.00 to this charity, helping a third world country build a school, or provide classrooms with school supplies, or provide a

lunch program for students. What a great way to say “Merry Christmas” to a Morning Glory staff member! “Free the Children” will provide a charitable

tax

receipt for all donations over $10. If you require a tax receipt, please provide us with the information in the chart below. Cheques should be made out

to Morning Glory Public School. We will send one cheque to “Free the Children” and we will send in your tax information to them at the same time.

If you google “Free the Children” or “Me to We”, you can check out more of this group‟s worthwhile activities. Thank you for your support. If you have any

questions, please contact me at the school (705.437.1537).

Sincerely,

Cathy Mitchell
