Internships within Western Washington University Athletics offer aunique opportunity to work within the Department of IntercollegiateAthletic to promote Viking Athletics. The interns act as liaisons between theDepartment of Athletics and various campus and community groups,faculty, staff, and local corporate sponsors. Through the process ofworking with these groups, the interns for Western Athletics are involved ina number of exciting events and activities in and around the campus andthroughout the community. The Athletic Department internships providestudents with an invaluable experience that will benefit the pursuit of acareer in any field. Serving as an intern within the Western AthleticDepartment is a unique opportunity to be directly involved in the game dayactivities at Viking sporting events including basketball, volleyball, softball,and soccer. These positions offered enable students to gain experienceinteracting face to face with a variety of people, thinking creatively, andsolving problems quickly, all in a fun, professional environment.

The Western Washington University Athletic Department considers theirinterns a vital component in the success of the overall department. Theefforts and contributions of the interns are heavily depended upon. Each ofthe internships offered through the Western's athletic department are paidinternships, but more importantly, Western Washington University AthleticDepartment promises one of the best hands on experience withinUniversity Athletics.

Job Description

This WWU On Campus Advertising Liaison intern will assist with ourgrassroots marketing efforts through the implementation of marketingevents throughout the WWU’s campus. In addition to managingpromotional efforts, the intern will enter the market to interact with theWWU Student’s/Fans customer base in efforts to increase awarenessschool spirit & support of WWU Athletic event. Getting the word outon campus is about upcoming home athletic events. This intern willparticipate in various stages of developing marketing programs andadvertising materials/events to promote all WWU Athletics; becomefamiliar with marketing strategies best utilized on WWU’s Campus. Working through all on-campus avenues and areas, AssociatedStudents, Resident life, dining services, recreation center and anyuntapped areas on WWU’s campus. Will require meetings andresearch into AS procedures, dining and rec center procedures formarketing and advertising. Also participating in every home athleticevent as a promotional fan and liaison between the athleticdepartment and the student fan section. Communicate with dormbuildings and departments about promotion for events.

Hall Council Position

Goal is to implement an Athletics Representative on each hallcouncil throughout campusRepresentative will have the responsibility of being a constantbridge between the athletic department and the residents since theinterns cannot maintain a continuous presence in the hallsDuties include making posters for game days, updating hall councilon the current happenings within the athletic department andmeeting with the On campus Advertising Liaison Intern to continuediscussing further projectsEach hall will have the ability to elect people for the positionthemselvesRepresentative will be provided with a free territory pass to attendall games as well as other perks such as free swag

Victor's Victory Raffle

At the front desk of a residence hall, a treasure chest created bythe intern, will be placed for an entire week leading up to the nextgame dayResidents will receive tickets throughout the week from theirResident Advisors to enter their names into the raffleThe winning name will be drawn at half time at the designatedgame at the end of the week. The winner must be at the game toreceive their prizePrizes can include items such as gift cards provided by theathletic department, free swag, a pizza or ice cream party for theirfloor and moreBoxes can also be used for other raffle events as well

Victor Visits The Dining Hall

A few days before an upcoming game, Victor the mascot will betaken to one of the three dining halls on campusTo promote the game he will take pictures with residents andhand out free ticketsThis is best done during dinnertime, as that is when the dininghalls will be at their highest capacity

On days that Western's Athletic Department had specific eventsor holiday's I created hair bows and bow ties for the intern staff towearI wanted to create a fun opportunity for our staff to be even morespirited and excited about the upcoming gameThe two events I designed bows for were our Big Pink gamessupporting breast cancer and the Halloween Game

Game Preparation

Before a game it was the interns responsibility to arriveearly to begin setting upIt became my regular responsibility to set up anddecorate the tables at the entrance of the gymI got a chance to display my creativity, which I greatlyenjoyed

Working for the Western Washington AthleticDepartment has been such a rewarding experience. I

greatly enjoyed getting to work in such an up beat andfun environment. I am happy I got to share my

adventure in The Department with you!
