4-H Information

Interview Judging Day General & Natural Resources, Family Consumer Science and County Projects Wednesday, July 31, 2019, 8:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Families are responsible for scheduling the interview(s) in 4-H online, June 1-June 20, 2019. (https://co.4honline.com/Login.aspx?403D4041306268495252646F2B413D) All Family Consumer Science, General and Natural Resources, and County Projects will be inter-view judged and entered at the Multi-purpose Building. This includes Dog Obedience members. Only the exhibitor will be allowed with the judge at the time of the interview; no parents or leaders. Exhibitors unable to be interview judged that day must make prior arrangements and complete an absentee interview form, available at the Extension Office. The form must be filled out and brought in to the Extension Office on or before, Monday, July 29, 2019. Catch-It animal participants have an interview already scheduled on Wednesday, July 31st, in the 4-H Building. Catch-It Dairy participants, only 2nd year, will be interviewed.

Manuals and Records Update If you have not received your manuals for projects, contact your club leader first as they received packets to distribute at club meetings. When you receive manuals/records, don’t set aside until summer. Take time to read the manual NOW and the records to see what you need to do. Most projects require activities to be completed over a period of several months. You want to do more than just the one thing for your exhibit.

Project Exhibit Requirements If you haven’t already started on your fair project exhibit, it’s time to get serious about it. While some project exhibits may not take as long as others, it is important you know what is expected so you’ll be ready for Interview Judging. For complete exhibit requirements go to: http://www.colorado4h.org/project_resources/StateFairExhibitReq.pdf The requirements will also be in the 2019 Morgan County Fair Book, it will be available mid-June. If your project exhibit and record book requires additional activities, you’ll need to have plenty of time to get all completed.

Manual or Record Book? There is often confusion about whether a member turns in their Manual or their Record Book. All projects require a record book but not all require the use of the manual; the manual, in most cases, serves as a learning guide for the completion of the project. If your project requires the manual for completion, that will be indicatied in the project exhibit requirements. Record books (E-records) are available online for Animal record books at https://morgan.extension.colostate.edu/4-h/records/, General and Natural and Family Consumer Science record book at http://co4h.colostate.edu/program-areas/projects/e-records-general/. Some Record Books require pieces from the manual and this information can be found looking at the exhibit scoresheets at http://co4h.colostate.edu/program-areas/state-fair-information/score-sheets/ For Shooting Sports, if you find discrepancies on rules between the manuals and the Morgan County or Colorado 4-H rule books, the rule books take precedence. If you have any questions regarding this, please contact Aimee at 970-542-3542.

4-H Information Project Letters Coming Soon All youth in General and Family and Consumer projects should be receiving information with de-tails on preparing exhibits, doing record books, and it will include score sheets as well as other re-sources to help be successful in this year’s 4-H program. Watch for the information and be sure to read it completely.

Record Book Workshops With Fair right around the corner, now is the time to start working on your record books! We know that they can be challenging at times, and this year will be offering two separate workshops for 4-H youth to bring in their record books and get help from agents or others, in completing their record books. These workshops are open to any 4-H member regardless of their project, and will be held at the Extension Office on: June 4 – 6:30-8:00 p.m. and July 10 – 6:00-8:00 p.m. Please contact Aimee with any questions at 970-542-3542.

Cake Decorating Boards One exhibit requirement for Cake Decorating is the board for the cake MUST be a solid, sturdy board which is cut in the same shape as the cake. A typical cardboard cake board is not stur-dy enough for fair exhibits and it can be difficult to get recycled cardboard which is thick enough. We recommend using 1/4 inch thick solid Masonite board. These can be obtained at a hardware store or lumber yard.

Display Boards and Record Covers The Extension Office has display boards (show boards) available for $5.50 each and green 4-H record book covers available for $3.50 each.

Are You Ready for Fair?! As a new member, or even a seasoned member, there are a lot of steps to be sure you are ready for fair! For a checklist to make sure you have everything done, visit: https://morgan.extension.colostate.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/28/2019/05/Are-you-ready-for-Fair.pdf.

2019 County Fair Dates Official fair dates are August 2-8, 2019, BUT pre-fair activities will begin earlier in July including Interview Judging which is Wednesday, July 31st. See the schedule on page 11.

2019 Concession Stand The concession schedule was emailed to all 4-H Club leaders. The schedule is based on the num-ber of members(8-18 yrs old) in your club and projects enrolled (to try to avoid conflicts with live-stock exhibit times). Because of changes in number of members in a club as well as changes in when the Concession Stands will be open in 2019, there will be some adjustment of hours working and day.

Signing up for Shooting Sports Members interested in Shooting Sports must enroll in each discipline that they are planning to shoot in addition to the discipline they are completing their 4-H project in. New for 2019, all youth must attend a mandatory safety training prior to their first practice. Contact Aimee, 542-3542, if you have not attended a training.

Livestock Premises ID Premises identification will provide quick and accurate traceability of livestock and locations in the event of an animal health concern, which will help maintain the health of all Colorado livestock. For this program, a premises is defined as a location or site where live-stock are born, handled, housed, managed, marketed, processed, or exhibited. Premises ID is managed by the Colorado Department of Agriculture. For the 2018 – 2019 project year, 4-H members with livestock projects (beef, dairy, goat, horse, sheep, swine, poultry, and rabbit) are strongly encouraged to obtain a Premises ID. It is required to exhibit at the Morgan County Fair and Colorado State Fair. It is also required for other livestock shows. If you don’t already have a Premises ID, you can obtain one by calling Marlin 542-3543 or go online to Colorado Location Identification (LID) Registration Form at http://col.st/tzSZP. If you have applied for one at your current address, you do not need to reapply. This ID is assigned to the ad-dress not the tenant.

Animal Care and Housing Form All 4-H members with animal projects will be required to have a completed, signed and approved animal Care and Housing Form for Colorado 4-H Livestock Projects form on file at the Extension Office. This form will be provided in two ways:

1. 4-H online for those that have their animals at their place of residence and 2. on our 4-H Website http://morgan.extension.colostate.edu for those that have their ani-mals some place other than their residence.

If your animal project is housed at your place of residence you filled out this form while filling out your paperwork during the enrollment process online. If your animal project is not housed at your place of residence then you will need to go to our 4-H Website, print the Animal Care and Housing form and fill out both sides of that form. This gives us additional information about your specific situation and helps with the approval process. Please give us detailed information or we will send them back for you to adjust your comments. Talk to your club leader, or contact Marlin at 542-3543 if you have any questions.

Catch-It Chicken Distribution Chicks will be distributed tentatively, Thursday, June 13th, at the Extension Office at 9:00 am. Information will be sent out upon date confirmation. Please call that morning to verify the chicks were shipped. Participants, who feel they cannot fulfill their commit-ment, please notify Marlin immediately.

Support Morgan County 4-H

Morgan County 4-H Foundation 4th of July Rodeo Concessions Please support the Morgan County 4-H Foundation and the 4-H members in the county by attending the annual Brush Rodeo, July 2nd-4th, and enjoying food from the concession stand. The funds enable us to give scholarships and fund the other 4-H activities we have been supporting.

Morgan County 4-H Foundation provides essen-

tial funding for 4-H programs throughout Colorado. Individu-als, corporations, and the 4-H Foundation are all partners in supporting the youth who take part in various 4-H activities throughout the state. Today there are 17 4-H Clubs in Morgan County and over 400 youth involved. Additional-ly, there are over 600 youth participating yearly in School Enrichment and After School programs making 4-H the larg-est youth organization in Mor-gan County.

Exhibiting at Colorado State Fair Did you know anyone can exhibit in the Creative Arts Division of the Colorado State Fair? Entries DO NOT have to be shown at the County Fair before going to State Fair. Extension will collect entries at the Extension Office Monday, July 8 through Friday, July 19, so exhibits can be taken to Pueblo be-fore August 1. They will be returned to Morgan County by Septem-ber 4. There are specific instructions for how entries need to be packaged and entry forms completed, so please contact the Extension Center for details before bringing your exhibits to the office. Creative Arts includes all types of needle arts, clothing, quilting, porcelain art, arts and crafts such as ceramics, jewelry, tole/decorative painting, scrapbooking, dolls, and all categories of food preservation. (The only thing we do not take to State Fair is baked foods.) There are special classes for senior citizens (over 65) as well as youth, so 4-H members may want to enter some extra items they have made during the year as they practiced on project ex-hibits. State Fair classes can be found at www.coloradostatefair.com or at the Extension Office after June 1.

AmeriCorps Members Active

Morgan County Extension’s 2018-2019 AmeriCorps members Shelly Columbia and McKenna VonFeldt will be providing STEM program-ming in Brush and Fort Morgan throughout the summer. Watch the Morgan County AmeriCorps with Shelly Columbia Facebook page for drop in class opportunities.
