Time Required: 1 hr. 30 min
Featured Art Works: “The Problem We All Live With” by Norman Rockwell
Lesson Overview: Students will look at a historical painting, “The Problem We All Live With” by Norman Rockwell, and they will critique it in 5 steps- react, describe, analyze, interpret, and evaluate. Students will also be able to look at a key point in history while evaluating the artwork.
Learning Objectives: Students will be able to…
1. Use each of the steps in critiquing art to critique “The Problem We All Live With” by Norman Rockwell.
2. Look at the historical perspective of the painting when evaluating and interpreting the piece.3. Use complete and coherent sentences to get their point across.

1. SS-5-HP-S-2: Students will: use information from print and non-print sources to examine factual and fictional accounts of significant historical events and people in US history.
2. SS-5-HP-S-1: Students will demonstrate an understanding of the interpretive nature of history using a variety of tools to explain and draw inferences about the importance of major events in US history.

Steps:
1. A lecture will be given- with a PowerPoint- over critiquing art and an introduction into history.2. At the end of the PowerPoint, I will explain the activity to the students telling them the will be split up
into 5 different groups and will be sent to separate tables, all having a different step in critiquing art. 3. Students will be divided up into 5 groups/centers once the lecture/PowerPoint is over.4. Groups will be numbered 1-55. Each group will be sent to a separate table corresponding with the number the group was given.

ART 2086. Once the students are seated, they will look at the painting at their table and the step in critiquing art that
their group is given. Each step in critiquing art will have questions with it to help the students give the best answer they can…
a. React: How does this painting make you feel?b. Describe: Tell me what you see in the picture, nothing more. c. Analysis: Tell me what elements of art and principles of design you see in the painting and how
the artist used them. d. Interpretation: What is the artist trying to say in this painting?e. Evaluation: Tell me how all this makes the painting’s purpose known. Tell me about the time in
history that this painting shows. 7. Students will have 15 minutes to write the required amount to evaluate the painting with the critique that
they are given. a. React- one to two sentences describing their reaction to the painting b. Describe- a paragraph describing the paintingc. Analysis: a paragraph analyzing the paintingd. Interpretation- a paragraph interpreting the paintinge. Evaluation: a paragraph analyzing the painting
8. Once the 15 minutes are up (students will be given 5 extra minutes if a majority of the class isn’t finished within 15) students will move to the next table-moving to the next number after the one they are at.
9. Once all the groups have been to all the tables students will be sent to their original seats. 10. Once all the students have returned to their seats we will come together as a class and talk about each of
the steps in critiquing art to see what conclusions they have come to. 11. Once the lesson is over, I will collect the writing notebooks and look over each student’s individual
answers too see if the subject needs to be covered more.
