    THE THEORY

For those of you who are curious, here is a window into the sources of theory and research behind our practice. Our theory and practice of dialogue has been mostly informed by Dr David Bohm (On Dialogue), Dr Bill Isaacs at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Dialogue & The Art of Thinking Together), Dr David Kantor (Reading the Room) and Dr Otto Scharmer at MIT (Theory U).

We also lean on other thought leaders in the field of dialogue, such as Amanda Ridings (Pause For Breath), Christina Baldwin & Ann Linnea (The Circle Way), Nancy Kline (More Time to Think) and Dr Marshall Rosenberg (Non Violent Communication).

Along the way additional sources of influence have included Dr Meg Wheatley (Leadership & The New Science), Dr Peter Senge at MIT (Presence), Doug Silsbee (Presence-Based Coaching), Pema Chodron, Dr Kabbat Zinn, Dr Daniel Siegel, Dr Richard Tarnas (The Passion of The Western Mind) and Peter Block (Community).

For the module on Monitor Climate we draw on neuroscience research and the SCARF framework by Dr David Rock.

All of the modules in Reading Group Dynamics: Predictive Intuition are based on Dr David Kantors approach.

However, in the module on Structural Traps we also weave in insights from Geert Hofstede and Robert House on the eight dimensions of cross-cultural values and language systems.

The whole section on Building Shared Understanding: Thinking Together pulls out the essence of Dr Bill Isaacs wisdom in Dialogue & The Art of Thinking Together.

For those of you who want dive further into the principles and practices of thinking together, we also encourage you to reach into Amanda Ridings fine book (Pause For Breath) and Nancy Klines research explained in More Time to Think.

For the practices of Suspending Thought, we incorporate additional ideas from Dr Dan Siegel, Dr Kabbat Zinn, Doug Silsbee, Pema Chodron and Dr Meg Wheatley.

The final section on Hosting Conversations That Matter integrates the common body of knowledge around participatory processes known as The Art of Hosting (AoH).

The AoH includes World Caf (Juanita Brown), Circle Practice (Baldwin & Linnea), Theory U (Scharmer & Senge), Appreciative Inquiry, Open Space Technology and other methods.

In this workshop we focus predominantly on the research and practice that underpins World Caf and Circle Practice; two mature approaches with well developed, publicly available resources that participants can apply immediately into their workplaces and communities. In a different program, we go more extensively into all the Art of Hosting methods.

The last module on Powerful Questions is based predominantly on the work by Eric Vogt, Juanita Brown and Meg Wheatley.

More than just getting through difficult or

adversarial conversations, we go beyond into

    other territories of more transformative

    thinking, listening and talking together.

    ABOUT US

    The People

More Than Just Talk was created by Michael Hann and Graham Richardson.

    Our Purpose

Today the world needs a diversity of ideas to thrive and flourish as we move through major economic, political, social and ecological transitions.

Innovation depends on inquiry into diverse and different ideas. However, in contemporary culture, organisations, politics and society are quick to limit those who have very different ideas.

We routinely see patterns of people blowing-up or shutting-down. We blame, label and attack. Or we withdraw and withhold. Sometimes it is very subtle, sometimes obvious and aggressive. We regularly get stuck in patterns of talking nice, talking tough or not talking at all. It is so pervasive in todays culture that people experience it every day.

Shifting these patterns of thinking, listening and talking is at the centre of our purpose. We want to create a world where people can expand the pools of shared understanding, relatedness and possibility between them, particularly when there are diverse perspectives and opposing opinions.
