Letter from CEO and Board ChairSome things never change. Since its inception in 1983, Hospice of Davidson County has focused on the same singular mission: serving the needs of those facing a life-limiting illness. The mission is simple but, as patients and family members can attest, the benefits are comprehensive. Included in those benefits are physical, spiritual, and emotional support services that can make a difficult time of life a little easier to bear.

This is not to say nothing has changed at Hospice of Davidson County in 34 years. Sustaining a strong hospice organization requires adherence to evolving sets of standards issued by outside accrediting and funding agencies. Through the efforts of many to meet these standards, Hospice of Davidson County received the Accreditation Commission for Health Care’s Gold Seal of Accreditation and gained recognition as a Hospice Elite provider by Deyta Analytics last year. Also, Hospice of Davidson County has undertaken numerous remodeling projects at the Hinkle Hospice House. All of these efforts are a part of a continuous plan to improve services to patients and their families.

Hospice of Davidson County leaders aspire for even more: providing training in hospice care to physicians, offering special grief programs to the larger community, breaking ground on a new Serenity Garden, and helping patients fulfill lifelong goals. The list could go on.

All of this would not be possible without a supportive community of volunteers, donors, and staff members. And then there are those who bear witness because Hospice has served a family member, friend, loved one, co-worker or neighbor. They spread the word about the tender care, the expertise, the guidance, or the right word at just the right time during the final stage of life. Upon this foundation, Hospice of Davidson County serves our community year in and year out – always changing when it benefits patients and families while never changing the mission upon which it was founded.

homes or residences from our hospice care teams.

Letter from CFO and Finance Committee ChairHospice of Davidson County has provided compassionate end-of-life care to our friends, neighbors and family members for over three decades. We provide the same level of service regardless of a patient’s or family’s ability to pay. The cost is significant, but so is our commitment to providing exceptional care both now and in the future. A strong financial foundation is important to ensure that the quality of our services continues.

2016 was a significant year of progress for Hospice of Davidson County. We were able to fund a nurse call system in the Hinkle Hospice House, replace the HVAC system at the Hinkle Hospice House and purchase devices for the newly selected medical records system. These investments, totaling approximately $170,000, will reap rewards in improved and more efficient patient care. And, we are growing our services, providing 540 more days of care from the previous year.

Despite those and other organizational expenses, Hospice of Davidson County emerged from 2016 in a firm financial position. Our cash flow increased $772,000 and our reserves increased by $287,000 to bring us to a balance of $1,250,000 as of December 31, 2016.

Staff commitment, donor support, fundraisers such as the Annual Golf Tournament, and memorial and honorariums are some of the many components that come together to help us sustain and grow Hospice of Davidson County in a managed and strategic fashion. Thank you for your support.

Overview of Agency Highlights/AccomplishmentsHospice of Davidson County’s services center around patients, whether they reside in private

homes, long-term care and skilled nursing facilities or are staying at the Hinkle Hospice House.

Hospice services expand to include patients’ families, and further out to medical professionals

and the larger community. In 2016, Hospice of Davidson County’s accomplishments focused

on these core constituencies, sometimes serving more than one but always patient-centered.

PatientsWhen patients arrive at Hospice of Davidson County, they often are facing one of the most tumultuous times of their lives. Fear and anxiety are common emotions as the end of life draws near. Hospice staff arrives in this swirl of emotions and, with a steady hand, demonstrate competence and caring. Staff achieves this level of service and, consequently, level of comfort by constantly striving to learn more and perform more efficiently and to the highest standards in the field. 2016 marked these milestones in that area:

• Received approval of accreditation status with the recommendation for continued deemed status with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid by the Accreditation Commission for Health Care (ACHC) for the services of Hospice Care and Inpatient Services.

• Achieved Hospice Elite status, a national recognition of service excellence, as demonstrated through Deyta Analytics by meeting 24 quality standards.

• Medical Director, Dr. Jennifer Davis, earned the Hospice Medical Director Certified credential by the Hospice Medical Director Certification Board.

• Began transition to a new, more efficient electronic medical record system.

• Installed a state-of-the-art call bell and locater system in Hinkle Hospice House.

• Redesigned nurses’ station in Hinkle Hospice House to meet compliance with HIPAA.

• Helped patients’ emotional health through fulfilling lifelong dreams such as facilitating a marriage vow renewal ceremony for one patient and his wife and enabling another patient to fulfill a lifelong dream of riding in a helicopter.

FamiliesHospice of Davidson County staff serves family members alongside patients in numerous ways. Helping with the physical needs of the patient lessens the burden on loved ones. Family members are relieved when Hospice nurses can help their loves ones live more comfortably and with less pain. Hospice of Davidson County social workers and chaplains provide emotional and spiritual support to families during a stressful time. Many family members express gratitude that knowledgeable and seasoned staff members are only a phone call away at any time of day or night. Hospice services do not stop after the death of the patient as many family members take advantage of grief support after the death of their loved one.

In 2016, families benefited from Hospice of Davidson County’s care through:

• Nurses and certified nursing assistants made nearly 15,000 visits to homes and nursing facilities in 2016 performing services that directly and indirectly benefited families.

• Chaplain and social worker visits together totaled over 2,800. These emotional and spiritual support services benefit families in addition to patients.

• 120 people attended a Remembrance Luncheon, one of many grief support programs offered to families.

• The agency added a private grief support services waiting area in the administration building.

• Hospice hosted the annual Bridges of Hope family day camp for grieving children, teens and the adults in their lives.

• The organization broke ground on a Serenity Garden on the Hospice of Davidson County campus to provide a beautiful place of reflection for patients and their families.

• 93% of families indicated overall satisfaction with patient care. (Consumer Assessment of Health Care Providers and Systems Survey)

CommunityHospice of Davidson County began locally and counts on local support to sustain and further its mission. In return, Hospice staff serves as community experts on end-of-life care and bereavement support. This circular relationship serves as a stable foundation for Hospice of Davidson County to operate now and in the future. In 2016, Hospice of Davidson County served the community in many ways including:

• Exposed physician residents and interns to Hospice care as part of a partnership with Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

• Sponsored Hospice Sabbath at houses of worship across the community reaching 1,500 area residents.

• Collaborated with multiple community agencies such as Cancer Services of Davidson County, Davidson County Medical Ministries, Faith Health NC and Family Services of Davidson County to expand and enrich Hospice of Davidson County services.

• Provided music and pet therapy to area facilities.

• Hosted the fifth annual Professional Grief and Loss Conference.

• Hosted a series of events in support of National Healthcare Decisions Day.

• Dedicated 100% of donations from the community to support patient care and non-reimbursed programs and services.

• Managed resources wisely to ensure the continuation of hospice services to the community.

Letter from Community Relations DirectorHospice of Davidson County’s reach extends beyond the confines of our campus on Highway 64. It impacts patients and their families in their home, wherever that might be. It comforts those who are grieving and supports them as they learn to live after loss. It guides the medical community as they work to serve those who are facing the end of life. It benefits the larger community in many ways, one of which is to start a necessary conversation about a difficult topic: the end-of-life and how everyone can best prepare for it.

Donors, volunteers and community partners are foundational to these and other initiatives. Consider a few of the ways they extend Hospice of Davidson County’s reach:

• Three generous, lead financial gifts helped staff break ground on a Serenity Garden, a place that will provide solace to patients, families, and the community.

• Memorials, honorariums, and special fundraisers such as the annual Ride for Angels help provide funding so that no patient is turned away due to an inability to pay.

• Patient care volunteers save Hospice of Davidson County over $128,000 a year. Hospice helped sponsor activities in conjunction with National Health Care Decisions Day through collaborations with Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center and Davidson County Senior Services.

• A team of staff and volunteers hosted the annual Bridges of Hope family day camp for grieving children and youth.

• Because of a gift from the estate of Christine Harris, Hospice of Davidson County sponsored the fifth annual professional conference on grief and loss. Nearly 70 professional caregivers from all over North Carolina attended the two-day event.

Ways to GiveCharitable donations of all sizes to Hospice of Davidson County have a significant impact on the scope and quality of end-of-life care provided in the Davidson County community. We are incredibly grateful for those in our community who chose to make Hospice of Davidson County a charitable priority.

The Founder’s Circle is an exclusive giving society recognizing individuals who make annual gifts at the leadership level ($1,000) or higher. The society honors the dedication and determination of our agency’s first leaders while elevating the importance of preparing for our agency’s future.

The Partners in Care program recognizes business leaders in our community that support the agency at the leadership level ($1,000) or higher by providing year-long visibility through our many marketing ventures and events.

Friends and Family members often choose to make a gift in memory or in honor of a friend or loved one whose life has been touched by Hospice of Davidson County. We will send a special notification letter to your loved one’s family or to the person you are honoring.

In May of 2017, Hospice of Davidson County announced the More Meaningful Moments Comprehensive Campaign. It has been a decade since we have been in a campaign to ask for support in expanding our services and resources for our community. Through this campaign, we will put the structure in place to meet the growing needs of our community.
