Marriages at Old Biloxi and New Orleans- the Baleine brides and some more who were not on “the

list” from 4 February 1721 to 21 August 1722

La Baleine anchored off the Gulf Coast near Mobile Bay on 8 January 1721. Bienville wrote on 25 April

1721 that 88 girls arrived on La Baleine and 19 had been married off since the 4th of March. Two other

boats had also brought women- Le Chameau and La Mutine. There were still 59 women to be taken care

of. On 25 June 1721 Bienville wrote that 31 girls had been married off between 24 April and 25 June

Jacques Bernard dit St. Bernard was in Kaskaskia circa 1726/1727.

“Cases that no doubt cause much gossip were paternity cases…. In another case, Jacques Bernard

dit St. Jacques came before the judge to request that Pierre Hullin claim and support the child born to

Bernard’s wife conceived during Bernard’s absence on a voyage. Voyages might last four to six

months, and Mme Bernard may have been lonely. The amount of damages is not given in the

April 1726 at Fort de Chartres [Chartres, 18]. Raymond Bresse/Brosse dit Berre/ Berne was on the

Duchesse de Noailles, 23 May 1718 from La Rochelle to Louisiana. François La Ferrière was on the

same ship [Conrad, I, 15; Toups, 30]. June 27, 1744 Raimond Brosse dit St. Cerny, habitant in city of

Cas [Kaskaskia], parish of Immaculate Concepption, was ready to leave for New Orleans and made

made out his will. Left money to the church, to his goddaughter, Agnès Hulin, and his good friend,

François La Ferrière was one of the party at the officers’s mess from 29 March 1718 to 16 May

1718 (49 days) awaiting departure on the Duchesse de Noailles, 25 May 1718, captain M. La Salle

[Conrad, I, 4]. He was part of the Charles Scourion de la Houssaye Concession [Conrad, I, p.12].

Probably of no connection but a François Boulier was a godparent to François Boudignon, 29 May

1749 [SLC, p. 29].

living on the land of Chauvin de la Fresnière, native of Canada, in the 20 December 1724 census of

habitants along the Mississippi River from New Orleans to Ouacha or the German Villages[ Census,

Concession of Semonville and Canet and was from Paris. On the same ship were two soldiers named

Cezille. On 1 July 1727 census of New Orleans he was enumerated as a former sailor, with a wife

and child, on the street crossing behind Bourbon. In 1727 this street had no name but is now

Dauphine Street. [Census, 89] In the 1731 map by Gonichon, Hupé was listed as a property owner.

In the same census, living in a small village called Chantilly, half a league from New Orleans, they

were enumerated as the brothers Dreux [Census, 61]. In the same census, in New Orleans, on rue du

Quay “the Dreux brothers when they are in town.” [Census, 65] In October 1726 the Dreux brothers

of New Orleans requested Negroes [Census, 77]. In the July 1727 the brothers Dreux were

enumerated as living along the road to the Bayou and to Chantilly/Gentilly. [Census, 95] In the same

census on the right bank ascending New Orleans was the brewery of the Dreux brothers, occupants,

[Census, 17]. Le sieur Rossard was enumerated as a notary and clerk in 1722 [Census, 32]. Rissard

was mentioned in a letter by Delachaisse 8 April 1723 [Census, 36]. He was also mentioned as a

record clerk in a letter by Delachaise 18 October 1723 [Census, 38]. In the January 1726 census of

the Colony of Louisiana, in New Orleans, on rue de Chartres, Rossard was enumerated as a Court

Notary and commissioner. There appeared to be two people in his household as well as 12 slaves
