MOOTRALREDUCING COW EMISSIONS – A GIGATON OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL
MICHAEL MATHRESELSA ZOUPANIDOU
DECEMBER 10, 2018COP24, KATOWICE, POLAND
We need a
Global food and agriculture revolution
Why?
Population increase (World Bank)
+Food consumption increase (FAO)
+Land use increase (WRI)
=Global emissions increase
Global food systems are failing humanity and speeding up climate change:
1. InterAcademy Partnership2. World Resources Institute3. Global Food Security Commission
COWS ARE A MAJOR PART OF THE PROBLEM…
If cattle were a nation it would be the3rd largest GHG polluter after China and the USA
Each cow emits3-4 tons of CO2e p.a.
(Using the current IPCC-GWP conversion factorhttp://www.climatechange2013.org/images/report/WG1AR5_Chapter08_FINAL.pdf)
https://www.wri.org/blog/2016/04/sustainable-diets-what-you-need-know-12-charts
SO WHAT TO DO?
Reality check of global cattle industry…
Reality check of cattle industry…
Actual cattle emissions = not 18% (UC DAVIS vs. FAO)
Reality check of cattle industry…
Dairy and meat protein growth (World Bank & FAO)
DAIRY GROWTH2005-2015 = 30%
BEEF GROWTH2050 = 55%
Reality check of cattle industry…
Methane GWP = 28 or 84 (ipcc AR5 2013)
WHAT IF WE MADE COWS PART OF THE SOLUTION?
All 1.5bn cows on earth fed a feed supplement reducing
methane by 30% equates to a1.5 Gigaton CO2e p.a.
reduction Taking more than a billion cars off the
road.
=
EU latest figuresCO2 emissions per car = 120g CO2/km https://www.theicct.org/publications/co2-emissions-new-passenger-cars-eu-car-manufacturers-performance-2017Average distance driven per year = 12,000 km http://www.odyssee-mure.eu/publications/efficiency-by-sector/transport/distance-travelled-by-car.htmlTotal emissions per car per year = 1.4 TCO2/car/year.
One of the largest potential carbon reduction opportunities in the world
MOOTRAL VIDEO
• The “CowCredit” will be a new high-quality voluntary carbon credit :• Local• Instant reduction• Targets methane• Low cost• Highly customizable
• A CowCredit represents 1 Ton of CO2e from the reduction of methane from the enteric fermentation from cows, when they are fed Mootral® Ruminant

WORKSHOP
OBJECTIVES
1. Learn more about carbon projects in the agriculture sector
2. Discuss the Mootral methodology and CowCredits
3. Understand how you can implement Mootral in Poland

AGRICULTURE GHG MARKETS Examples
1. A new crop for rice farmers: Carbon offsetsRice growers can earn extra income through California’s cap-and-trade program
2. Carbon Farming – Agriculture’s Answer to Climate ChangeAustralia’s Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) allows farmers and land managers to earn carbon credits by storing carbon or reducing greenhouse gas emissions on the land
3. Crediting Farmers for Nutrient StewardshipA farmer generates a credit for each unit of nitrous oxide emissions avoided by a change in nutrient application practices under GHG offset programs (ACR, VCS, CAR)
New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme Overall GHG emissions by sector (MtCO2e)
Sector MtCO2eAgriculture 38.4
Energy (excl. transport) 17.8
Transport 14.7
Industrial processes and other product use 5.3
Waste 4.0
≈ 70 entities with mandatory reporting of biological emissions (methane and nitrous oxide) , but without surrender obligations
The Government has indicated surrender obligations would not begin unless:1. there are economically viable and practical technologies available to reduce emissions2. our trading partners make more progress on tackling their emissions in general

Mootral methodology and CowCreditsClimate-Smart Agriculture – Ruminants Answer to Climate Change
The proposed methodology considers methane emissions reduction from enteric fermentation. Why? Enteric fermentation is the second largest source of global emissions from livestock supply chains
The purpose of The Program is to incentivize, accelerate and help the dairy and beef industry reduce their carbon emissions
This ultimately helps farmers contribute to their industry’s and country’s efforts to meet their national and international carbon reduction targets
Mootral methodology and CowCreditsReduction of enteric methane emissions from ruminants by the use of 100% natural feed supplement
Type of GHG emissions mitigation action : Methane avoidance
Important conditions under which the methodology is applicable : - The active ingredients of the feed supplement is 100% natural and plant-based - The livestock producers must introduce the feed supplement into the ruminants daily
regime
Important parameters :- Number of animals in the farm by category- Amount of supplement used- Emission Reducion Factor
Mootral methodology and CowCreditsReduction of enteric methane emissions from ruminants by the use of 100% natural feed supplement
BASELINE SCENARIO High enteric methane emission per ruminant due to the continuation of the livestock operation through traditional practices (i.e., typical feeding regime without using the natural feed supplement to reduce enteric methane fermentation).
PROJECT SCENARIO Reduced enteric methane emission per ruminant due to the inroduction of the natural feed supplement into ruminants’ diet in the project.
