ARIES (March 21-April 19): The mind is a terrible thing to waste. Frequent phone calls can interrupt concentration. Plan ahead; arrange for a period of peace and quiet in the upcoming week to master a new skill or study.TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You shot an arrow into the air, it comes to earth you know not where. If you commence a serious study or research business techniques in the week ahead, it may snowball into something valuable.GEMINI (May 21-June 20): If you put your “get-up-and-go” on full throttle, you can go far in the week ahead. Be a mover and a shaker in the business world to receive recognition and attention. Pursuing amorous fancies is futile.CANCER (June 21-July 22): Put on your thinking cap. Other people challenge you to think things through this week. Develop a plan of action for the future. Rather than acting on every passing whim, consider the big picture.LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Sharpen your wits to remain on the cutting edge. The people you meet in the week ahead might not remain in your life very long, but could offer powerful insights and open your eyes to exciting possibilities.VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Forget your fear of heights. Honesty is not only the best policy, but the only policy that will get you up the ladder of success in the week ahead. Investigate and discover the facts and take time to study.LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Receive rave reviews. Start any matter that needs to receive widespread publicity to succeed or where your people skills can be used to your advantage. Remain open to progressive concepts this week. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Polish your public image in the week ahead. What you think of yourself is more important than what other people think of you. Your resourcefulness and flair at work can bring you attention or recognition.SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Sometimes the teacher learns the most from the students. During the upcoming week, you may understand more when called upon to show someone how to perform a task or explain a concept.CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Don’t let what you can’t do stop you from doing what you can do. In the week ahead, you will be able to visualize future possibilities. Your evaluation of people and potential is better than usual.AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): It’s not what you know, but whom you know that counts. Form alliances with powerful people this week, and fame and fortune could rub off on you. A special someone could show extra affection.PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Sail with the current, not against it. The latest news, the most recent fads, and most innovative technology may attract you in the week ahead. You may be easily distracted if paid a compliment by an admirer.

Winter Safety TipsCold TemperaturesProper Clothing. It’s that time of year once again when the thermometer dips well below freeing and we bundle up in multiple layers to stay toasty warm. Of course, there is an alternative to that warm winter vacation or simply staying indoors throughout those cold months.
✴ Have your child dress in layers. Layers can be added or taken off as the temperature changes.
✴ Over heads with a warm, close-fitting hat that protects the ear lobes
✴ A tubular neck warmer should be used instead of a scarf, but if a scarf must be used, make sure it is tucked into the jacket to avoid strangulation. Remove all cords and drawstrings from under the chin
✴ Be aware of the wind chill factor. Wind greatly speeds up the process of body heat loss.
✴ Remove wet clothes and shoes as soon as possible to avoid additional chilling.
Warm Winter Vacations. Each year thousands of Saskatchewan residents will migrate to warmer climates either in Canada or the United States. Many will also take warm cruises or visit sunny sand beaches. Where ever your winter vacation might take you...be prepared.
✴ Leave contact numbers for family and friends back home
✴ Plan ahead and know if there are any travel or health advisories for the area you want to visit. Visit the Government of Canada website (www.travelhealth.gc.ca) for all the latest updates
✴ Pack along essential identification, extra medication and a list of emergency contact numbers
✴ Make sure you have someone check your home regularly for potential damage. Nothing worse than returning to find someone has broken in or the water pipes broke!
✴ Don’t forget the SUNSCREEN!

Since I’ve been here over a week, I’m available for adoption now, so maybe if YOU’D like to laugh and play, you’d come by and meet me!

The Right Pet for Your Child’s AgeThinking of adding a pet to the family? Make sure you’re bringing home an animal that is appropriate for your child’s age.
Infants Infants cannot handle or take care of pets. So, if you already have a family pet when your child is born—or if you adopted soon after—make sure to formally introduce your infant to your pet. Supervise them as they get to know each other, gradually increasing the length of time they spend together.
Toddlers Toddlers are curious and will pull at an animal’s fur, limbs and ears in an attempt to make contact through touching. Make sure that the pet you’ve adopted can handle being touched in this way. As your pet and child spend time together (always under your supervision!), take great care that your child doesn’t hurt your pet by grabbing. Also be sure that your child doesn’t grab your pet’s food and water dishes, your cat’s litter box or its contents. If you have fish, keep small hands away from aquarium wires and out of aquariums!
3-5 Years At this age, your child is learning about contact and empathy. Experts recommend a guinea pig for a pet. Guinea pigs like to be held, seldom bite and will whistle when excited or happy, to the delight of most kids. Your child can also help with responsibilities by filling the water bottle and food dish. 5-10 Years Kids this age have inconsistent attention spans and are best off with small pets such as gerbils and goldfish. Supervise them during play sessions and while they do chores such as cleaning cages, filling water bottles and bowls, measuring food and scrubbing cage furniture and toys. This is a good time to develop good hygiene habits around pets with an emphasis on washing hands and surfaces when done handling or playing.
10-13 Years Kids in their early teens have a great interest in animals and a good capacity for responsibility. They are ready for pets such as dogs, cats and rabbits and can handle feeding and walking the pet, cleaning the cat’s litter and cleaning out the rabbit’s cage. Although kids in this age group can be reliable, adults should always check that pets have adequate food and water and that the cage or litterbox is clean. Kids can also participate in dog training classes, which can be an excellent learning opportunity for them.
14-17 Years Teens tend to be very busy, and animals will have to compete for their time and attention. Recommended pets are birds and aquarium fish. They’re old enough to take on all of the responsibilities of caring for their pet, with adult supervision and guidance. They may even spend their allowance on treats. Parents should note that dogs and cats acquired at this time will probably stay in the home when the child leaves for college.

Traditionally, when people think of bluffing, they think about making a large, intimi-dating bet that blusters an opponent out of the pot. But a more effective and cost-effi-cient bluff is one in which the size of the bluff is based on what your opponent thinksof you and also on the strength of his probable hands. Sometimes a very small bluff canbe the best option, for surprising reasons.
Earlier this month, I played in the World Poker Tour’s $10,000 Five Diamond WorldPoker Classic at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. On Day Three, we were about 10 playersaway from the money, and I was fortunate to have landed at a soft table. However, I wasfairly card-dead, and we weren’t close enough to the bubble that it affected people’sdecision-making, so for quite some time I just folded.
Finally, in a hand that occurred just before we headed tobreak, I took a shot at someone pre-flop. Action folded to aplayer in late position who raised, and I three-bet him oneoff the button with 5♠ 3♠. Naturally, I was hoping he’d justfold, but when it folded back to him, he made the call.
The flop came Q♣ 10♥ 6♦, and my opponent checked. Ithought the flop had a texture that connected pretty well tothe kinds of hands this particular player wouldcall a re-raise with out of position, so I decidedto check back and fold the turn if he bet.
The turn brought the 4♦, and I picked up anopen-ended straight draw. When my opponentchecked, I bet slightly larger than I had made itpre-flop — a bet of 4,500. My opponent called.
The river brought a useless 4♠, and my oppo-nent checked. That was definitely an unfortunate card, and it made alarger bet a very bad idea, because he would probably call with strongerpairs like queens and tens. However, there was another part of his rangethat probably wouldn’t call a small bet: all those missed draws thatwould still give him the best hand simply because my hand is so weak.
This particular opponent was a little passive, so it was possible hewas holding a hand such as J-9, K-J, A-J, 7-5 suited or two diamonds— the sort of hand that would lead him to check the turn instead of bet-ting. I had absolutely no showdown value and could only win by bet-ting. I also felt that a small bet would appear to be a value bet andwould get him to fold anything that wasn’t a pair. I bet 6,500.
This confounded my opponent. He shuffled chips back and forth, tak-ing them from atop his pile, shuffling them and counting them out, thenputting them back on top of his pile and staring at me. “Why couldn’t you have betmore?” he said. “Ah, jeez, it’s so clearly a value bet.”
I remained quiet. Finally, he took the necessary chips off his stack and dropped themreluctantly in the pot.
“You win,” I said. He tabled his pocket eights, and I tapped the table, then tossed myhand toward the muck.
“I wish you had bet bigger!” he said as he began stacking the chips. “I’d have calledyou so fast!”

This is the best time of year for a warm bowl of soup. All those big holiday feasts are receding into the past, and we yearn for simpler meals. Our New Year’s resolutions about eating more healthful foods and getting fit make us want to focus on simpler ways to satisfy our hunger. And those dark, chilly January nights demand dishes that can really warm you up from the inside.
Soup is a perfect solution. Make a robust soup and add a hearty side salad and some crusty bread, and dinner is served. Prepare that soup with the best produce from the farmers’ market, and you’re eating with good health in mind. And a soup that’s thick and velvety seems almost to glow with warmth, bringing you cozy comfort with every spoonful. My recipe for Roasted Winter Squash Soup with Red Bell Pepper Swirl (featured on page 12) is a very satisfying example of what I mean.
Hard-shelled winter squashes are abundantly available in farmers’ markets and supermarket produce departments right now. I’ve called here for
two of the most common kinds, butternut and acorn, which combine to give the soup a more complex flavor and a rich golden-orange color. But you could also substitute other good varieties you might find, such as banana squash, Delicata, Hubbard, or kabocha. You might find some of the larger types being sold already cut up into skin-on chunks. But the two I call for usually need to be cut in half before roasting, a task that will call for a sharp, sturdy knife, a slip-proof cutting board, and -- most important of all -- carefulness!
Those squashes, plus some broth and seasonings, make up the majority of the ingredients. Yes, there’s also some butter and cream. But, when you divide them by the maximum number of bowlfuls you get, 12, you see how healthy the soup really is. There’s just 1/2 tablespoon of butter and 2 teaspoons of cream per serving. You see, even a little touch of richness can help deliver so much satisfaction with every spoonful.
The final touch, a simple puree of roasted red bell pepper, makes each bowlful more beautiful and flavorful. If you like, substitute a scattering of toasted nuts or some dried cranberries or cherries.
I would happily serve this healthful soup to my family and friends for a casual dinner any day of the week during winter. All you need to do is add a loaf of hot whole-grain bread and a salad of winter greens -- perhaps hand-torn pieces of kale tossed with some toasted nuts, a few dried cranberries, and a warm balsamic dressing.
Doesn’t that sound delicious? I feel warmer just thinking about it!

Say You Saw It In... When Canada Was Created On the sixth day God turned to the Archangel Gabriel and said,
‘Today I am going to create a land called Canada. It will be a land of outstanding natural beauty; it shall have tall majestic mountains full of mountain goats and eagles, and beautiful sparkly lakes bountiful with carp and trout. There shall be forests full of elk and moose, high cliffs overlooking
sandy beaches with an abundance of sea life, and rivers stocked with salmon.’
God continued, ‘I shall make the land rich in oil so to make the inhabitants prosper, I shall call these inhabitants
Canadians, they shall be known as the most friendly people on the earth.’
‘But Lord,’ responded Gabriel, ‘don’t you think you are being too generous to these Canadians?’
‘No, not really.’ God replied..........’ Just wait and see the neighbours I am going to give them.’

“TAKEN 2”: It’s a case of role reversal as ex-CIA man Bryan Mills has to be saved by his daughter in the sequel to Liam Neeson’s action hit that redefined his career. The espionage veteran and his ex-wife (Famke Janssen) are kidnapped by a vengeful relative of one of the abductors Mills killed in the course of rescuing his offspring (Maggie Grace) ... and the rescuee has to turn rescuer to save her parents. As with the first round, it’s fun to watch a confident and gritty Neeson even the score, and the overseas locale - Istanbul this time - adds much. DVD extras: “making-of ” documentary; alternate ending. ***
“TO ROME WITH LOVE”: Woody Allen has had considerable success using foreign locales, certainly recently with “Midnight in Paris,” and he takes that approach again with this enjoyable comedy that set several stories in Italy. Writer-director Allen himself plays an opera director who unexpectedly starts a new chapter, while Jesse Eisenberg (“The Social Network”) plays a young man who falls for his girlfriend’s friend (Ellen Page, “Juno”) as an architect (Alec Baldwin) advises him. Judy Davis, Alison Pill (“The Newsroom”), Penelope Cruz - who was helped to an Oscar by Allen in “Vicky Cristina Barcelona - and fellow Oscar winner Roberto Benigni also star. DVD extra: “making-of ” documentary. ***
“WON’T BACK DOWN”: This earnest drama benefits from strong performances by Maggie Gyllenhaal, as a parent who worries her daughter isn’t getting the best educational experience, and Viola Davis, as a teacher who puts her career on the line to improve standards at her school. There’s no doubt that real-life instructors will
be a natural, and naturally satisfied, audience for the film. Holly Hunter and Rosie Perez also star. DVD extras: theatrical trailer; two “making-of ” documentaries; audio commentary by director Daniel Barnz; deleted scenes. ***
“THE INTOUCHABLES”: Based on a true story, this seriocomic French film by writer-directors Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano earned international raves for its two stars ... veteran actor Francois Cluzet as a rich aristocrat suddenly incapacitated while paragliding, and Omar Sy (who won the Cesar, France’s equivalent of the Oscar, as best actor for this) as the much younger and more street-wise fellow hired to care for him. Though others are in the cast, the picture very much belongs to those actors, and their unlikely yet fabulous teamwork justifies it. *** “THE POSSESSION”: It’s time again to look in the Yellow Pages under “Exorcist,” as a youngster falls prey to an ancient demon in this allegedly fact-
inspired melodrama that benefits from having Kyra Sedgwick and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (“Magic City”) as the victim’s parents. The girl (Natasha Calis, “The Firm”) buys an antique box at a yard sale, and the spirit it contains soon has a drastic effect on her and those around her. Sam Raimi is among the film’s producers. DVD extras: “making-of ” documentary; audio commentary by director Ole Bornedal and writers Juliet Snowden and Stiles White. ***
“LED ZEPPELIN: GOOD TIMES, BAD TIMES - THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION”: As Jack Black noted recently when surviving members Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones received the Kennedy Center Honors, it only took Led Zeppelin nine studio albums to cement its place among the all-time-great groups in music. This five-DVD documentary details how it happened by tracing the history of the band (which also included drummer John Bonham), expectedly with a generous dose of the related music. ***

TIDBITS® PRESENTS SOME INTERESTING
WINTRY FACTSby Kathy Wolfe
Baby, it’s cold outside! As we head into the season of
cold temperatures, Tidbits presents some interesting
and informative facts about winter.
• Forthoseofusintheno
rthernhemisphere,thefirst
day of winter is the day the sun is farthest south, on
either December 21 or 22. Also known as the Winter
Solstice, it’s the shortest day of the year, with about
9.5 hours of daylight.
• Asnowflakestartsoutas

around a tiny piece of dust in the air. It can be just
one ice crystal, or as it falls, several crystals can join
together. There are always six sides, and although
two snowflakes may be
very similar, none are
exactly the same. The shape and form are dependent
on the temperature, water vapor in the air, moisture
content of the cloud, the wind, and the length of
time it takes to reach the ground. Extremely cold
weather produces very fin
e, powdery snowflakes,
while temperatures near t
he freezing point cause
much larger and more complex ones. The average

ofabout3.1mph(5km/
hr) and it can take several hours for one to make it
to the ground.

TIDBITS LOOKS INTO
THE HISTORY OF CURLING ORIGINS
The precise beginnings of curling will always
remain a mystery! However, it is not hard to imagine
a man, hundreds or even thousands of years ago,
who weighed a smooth, heavy rock in his hand,
then watched and listened with fascination as
he launched it along a glistening bed of ice on
a frozen river. This “first curler” must have been
intrigued by the way the rock moved and by the
grumbling sound it made as it tw
isted and turned.
Other people in the not so distant past have heard
this same sound and have applied it as a nickname
for the game of curling ... it is often referred to as
“the roaring game”.
Scots and continental Europeans have engaged
in many a lively dispute as to the true origin of
curling. Both claim to be founders. Did Scots invent
the game, or was it imported by Flemish sportsmen
who emigrated to Scotland during the reign of
James VI (James I of England)? Did Europeans
engage in some early form of curling, and did
Scots merely adopt and enhance it? The evidence,
based on works of art, contemporary writings,
and archaeological finds, has sparked a number of
theories, but nothing is conclusive.

TIDBITS® HEARS THE BELLS TOLL
BELLSby Patricia L. Cook
This Tidbits will ring some bells of history! Bells
have been around for many centuries, including
references in the Bible. Long before telephone
ringers, ambulance sirens, internet, emails and
“tweets,” bells summoned the masses for news,
happy and sad.
• Bells are rung at many major life events and
occasions, including weddings and funerals in
some religions. In earlier centuries bells were
also rung to make announcements at community
squares. Many churches ring bells at Christmas
to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.
• Ringing of bells and other noisemakers may
have originated with pagans, people who have
“little or no religion.” They used the bells to
scare away evil spirits.

EXPENSIVE ARENASWith the football season beginning to wind down, you might be interest in what spectators have been paying for tickets at some of the stadiums. Tidbits presents the most expensive, the least expensive, and a glance at Super Bowl ticket prices. • The price tag for game attendance is based on
the Fan Cost Index, a figure derived by the Team Marketing Report. This figure represents the price for a family of four to attend an NFL game, including four tickets at the average price, two small beers, four small sodas, four hot dogs, parking, two game programs, and two adult caps. The average league-wide figure is $427.42.
• The fifth most-expensive stadium, Chicago Bears’ Soldier Field, carries a Fan Cost Index of $557.18. Home of the Bears since 1971, it holds 61,500 fans, and has an average single ticket price of $101.55. Fans can have a beer for $8 and a hot dog for $5. The team has a season ticket renewal rate of 98%, and every game has sold out for the last 27 years.
• The third most expensive stadium belongs to the New England Patriots, with an index of $597.66, and a single ticket average of $117.84. Gillette Stadium also offers “premium tickets,” which include oversize plush seats, fancier food and beverages, flat screen TV’s, and access to the field post-game. Want a season ticket? Get in line, there’s a waiting list.
The Kid’s Doctor: Cold sores actually have nothing to do with colds
By Sue Hubbard, M.D. www.kidsdr.comFever blisters are fairly common and are also often called cold sores, but have nothing to do with a cold. These sores typically appear on the outside of the mouth, on the lips. The vast majority (about 95percent) of fever blisters are due to a virus, typically herpes type 1. Because these blisters are caused by a virus, they are contagious and most people will be exposed to the virus during their lifetime. Children are typically exposed via contact with an adult, sibling, or relative who has a fever blister, or with other children who’ve mouthed toys, cups, etc., contaminated with the virus. In many cases, exposure may be asymptomatic. Others who pick up the virus develop painful vesicles appearing both inside the mouth and on the tongue and gums, as well as on the lips, three to five days after exposure. This initial illness is called herpetic gingivostomatitis. The initial infection tends to be more uncomfortable, and it may take up to two weeks for the lesions to resolve. The most difficult aspect to deal with is oral discomfort, so it’s important to make sure young children with the virus stay hydrated. Popsicles are often helpful for this.Once you’ve been exposed to the herpes virus, this virus remains in nerve endings where it may remain dormant and asymptomatic for years. About 60 percent of children are positive for HSV-1 by adolescence. At other times, the virus may become active (in times of stress, after sun exposure, or accompanying fever or menstrual periods), resulting in a fever blister. If a child develops a fever blister, they also are contagious and may spread the illness by touching or picking at the lesion, then touching other people or objects with their mouths.Fever blisters can be treated in most cases by applying a topical antiviral to the lesion. These prescription medications may shorten the duration of the fever blister by a day or two, especially if started early and applied frequently. If your children experience recurrent fever blisters, speak with your pediatrician about the use of oral antiviral medications. Remember, if you have a fever blister, don’t kiss your baby. Although most viral shedding occurs after the initial HSV infection, you remain contagious with each fever blister so it’s better to take precautions for a few days.
A well aged farmer and his equally aged wife were leaning on the fence looking into their pig pen, when the old woman exclaimed that next week would be their 50th wedding anniversary.
“We should have a party, Herman,“ she said proudly. “Let’s kill a pig.“
The old farmer scratched his head for a moment then said “Gee Ethel, I don't see why the pig should take the blame for something that happened fifity years ago.“

ROASTED WINTER SQUASH SOUP WITH RED BELL PEPPER SWIRL
Makes about 2 quarts, 8 to 12 servings
3-3/4 pounds organic butternut squash1-3/4 pounds organic acorn squash6 tablespoons unsalted butter1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, plus extra as needed1/8 teaspoon freshly ground white pepper, plus extra as needed1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg2 organic red bell peppers1 small white onion, peeled and finely diced1/4 teaspoon ground ginger1/8 teaspoon ground cardamom4 cups organic chicken broth or vegetable broth, heated, plus 1/4 cup extra1/2 cup heavy cream1 sprig fresh rosemarySaltFreshly ground black pepperPreheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
◆ Meanwhile, cut the squashes in half. Scoop out and discard the seeds. In a small, microwave-proof bowl, melt 2 tablespoons of the butter and brush it over the cut sides of the squashes. Season with salt, white pepper, and nutmeg. Arrange the squash cut side down in a roasting pan. Put the peppers in a separate small pan or baking dish. Put the two pans in the oven. Roast until the bell peppers are uniformly blackened and blistered, about 30 minutes, and the squash is tender, about 1 hour. Remove both pans from the oven and leave at room temperature until cool enough to handle.◆ With a large spoon, scoop the flesh from the squashes into a food processor fitted with the stainless-steel blade. Pulse until pureed. Transfer to a bowl and set aside. You should have about 4 cups.◆ In a medium soup pot, melt the remaining 4 tablespoons butter over low heat. Add the onion and saute, stirring frequently, until tender but not yet browned, 3 to 5 minutes. Reduce the heat to very low, add the squash, and cook, stirring occasionally, just until heated through. Stir in the ginger, cardamom, and salt and pepper to taste.◆ Raise the heat slightly to low, pour in the 4 cups broth, and bring to a boil, stirring often. Adjust the heat to maintain a simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, for 20 minutes.◆ Meanwhile, peel and discard the blackened skins from the peppers. Slit them open and remove the stems, seeds, and veins. Put the roasted flesh of the peppers in a blender, add the remaining 1/4 cup of broth, puree, and season to taste with salt and pepper. Transfer to a plastic squeeze bottle or to a small bowl.◆ Stir the cream and rosemary sprig into the pot of soup and continue simmering gently until heated through, 2 to 3 minutes longer. Remove the rosemary.◆ Ladle the soup into heated serving bowls. Garnish each bowl with a swirl of bell pepper puree, squeezed from the squeeze bottle or spooned from the bowl. Serve immediately.

Say You Saw It In... Arenas Cont’d• The Dallas Cowboys play in the second most expensive
stadium, with a cost index of $613.80. The $6 price tag on sodas is the highest in the league, and fans fork over $75 for parking at the three-year-old arena. If money is a little tight, spectators can purchase a $29 “party pass” that allows a standing-room view of the game from platforms on the end zone and corners.
• MetLife Stadium in the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey, is the only NFL stadium shared by two teams. The most expensive stadium ever built and the largest in the NFL in terms of permanent seating capacity (82,500), it is home to both the New York Jets and the New York Giants. The cost index differs between the two teams, with the Giants the fourth-highest in the league at $592.26 and a whopping $464.75 for a premium seating ticket. The most expensive tickets in the league belong to the Jets with the index at $628.90. If you’d like to reserve two tickets for the Jets in the premium club area, you can do so for a five-year period for $24,340.
• How about the cheapest prices in the league? That honor belongs to EverBank Field, home of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Although it’s the fifth-largest stadium in the NFL, its Fan Cost Index is just $316.50, and an average ticket price of $58.90. It’s close to the bottom in terms of attendance.
• The average ticket price for last year’s Super Bowl was $2,900. Tickets for the 2013 game are slated to be much higher, with the cheapest in the $2,500 range and the most expensive over $9,500. This will be the 7th year for the contest at New Orleans’ Superdome, the largest fixed-dome structure in the world, which has a seating capacity exceeding 76,000. New York’s MetLife Stadium is scheduled for the 2014 matchup.
