Get the luxury bedroom look for lessI do love a good hotel website with agallery of photographs to tempt youinto booking the very best room orsuite. But booking a stay in a hotel isa tricky business, isn’t it? I fear Imake it harder on myself than it everneeds to be – I always tend to start asearch for the more glamorous hotelsand then work my way backwardsuntil I meet my budget.
Sadly, the room I can afford is usu-ally the one without the four-posterbed or roll-top bath featured on thehome page.
However, sometimes I get thechance to stay in a hotel that sur-passes all my expectations. Not be-cause I blew the budget but becausethe accommodation is thoughtfullydesigned. But then I often go homeand find myself dissatisfied with myown bedroom at home! It’s a no-winsituation – or so I thought.
T hat’s why I was so excited to findout the trade secrets of Nadine Judd, the interior designer behind theMoorland Garden Hotel in Yelverton,West Devon. Nadine, who works forher family’s firm Scott-MassonDesign of Dorset, has revamped eachof the hotel’s 44 bedrooms. Now, theyare all completely different to oneanother and scattered with easy-to-achieve design touches.
The Moorland Garden Hotel(formerly the Moorland Links Hotel)was bought by Brian and SoniaMeaden, parents of Dragons’ Den TVstar Deborah Meaden, in August 2011.It was an obvious choice for theMeadens, close to their home town ofChagford and with nine acres of tran-quil (albeit slightly overgrown) gar-dens in Dartmoor National Park.
The hotel was somewhat run downbut just waiting for some loving andexperienced hands to bring it back toits glory days. That is exactly whatNadine and the Meadens haveachieved. Nowhere more so than inthe bedrooms, where comfort andglamour are found in abundance.
Interior designer Nadine startedout as a designer for private homes. But over the past six years she hasbeen working on a number of guesthouse and small hotel projects too.Small wonder the hotel feels like anextra-fabulous home from home.
“The first time I looked aroundhere, my overall impression of thebedrooms was that they were verytired and dated,” says Nadine. “But Icould see some just needed new cur-tains, bedside lamps and a few softfurnishings. Others have undergonea full renovation and are all the betterfor it – they look wonderful.”
In your own home you sometimesd o n’t have the budget or time to do afull makeover, says Nadine. “But you
would be amazed how you canachieve a big difference with a fewcleverly selected bits and pieces. Asplash of new paint on the walls, somenew bedding and a few scatter cush-ions make a big difference to theoverall feel of a room.”
Brian and Sonia changed the nameof their new hotel to the MoorlandGarden, and this theme has inspiredthe flower designs of Nadine’s bed-room makeovers. The Forget-Me-Notsuite has a palette of pale blues andcreams, with a designer feature chairof red and orange. The Lily of theValley room has hand-printed blackand green floral wallpaper and agreen velvet sofa as a focal point. ThePeony Room has shocking pinktouches and a four-poster bed.
Nadine says she often gets her
ideas and inspiration from hotels shevisits. “If I like something, I make amental note of it. I adore beautifulthings and so I am easily inspired.
“Everyone is different, but I wouldsay that the majority of people agreethat a bedroom should be pretty andrelaxing as well as functional. If youneed extra inspiration, flick throughmagazines and tear out things youlike for an ideas scrapbook. You’llfind many designer touches easy toreplicate with less expensive ver-sions found on the high street.”

Top Westcountry designer NadineJudd says:● Lighting is important. Considerswitches by the bed, a light thatturns on automatically when acupboard door is opened, readinglights that are individuallycontrolled and dimmer controls.Lampshades in our four mainbedroom suites were especiallydesigned to wildflower themes bydesigner and illustrator LindaWarren. Prices from £30 – £50www.lindawarrend esign.co.uk● In a hotel room, a small space canbe a flexible haven for the guest, offering multiple activities.
Do the same in your bedroomwith areas for sleeping, reading,writing/applying cosmetics andd re s s i n g .● Sometimes it is worth spendingmore on one key item of furniture. The much talked about feature chairin the Moorland Garden Hotel’sForget-Me-Not Suite came from PFCollections. Similar styles can befound www.totally-interiors.co.uk● One of the reasons for the successof the Moorland Garden Hotel’sbedrooms is that we managed tokeep them quirky and personal withart and local interest magazines.Whether it is a favourite painting ormuch-loved books, don’t be afraid toinclude those special items in yourdecorating scheme so you feelconnected and at peace.● For artwork that doesn’t breakthe bank, try TK Maxx (stores inExeter, Plymouth, Taunton andT r uro).John Lewis, House of Fraserand Next also have a good selection.● Use natural light. Ensure curtainsor window treatments open pastyour windows to maximise views, but have enough (lined) fabric toensure at least ten cms overlapwhen they are drawn. We had thecurtains made by Sharon Stone SoftFurnishings in Ivybridge (01752691141, www.sharonstonesoftfur nishings.com).● If wallpapering the whole roommay be too expensive oroverwhelming, paper one wall –perhaps the one behind the bed. This could allow you to buy a moreexpensive paper without breakingthe bank. Our wallpapers came fromOsborne and Little, Harlequin andSheila Coombes. You can find themon www.wallpaperdirect.co.uk● Keep walls (and carpets) fairlyneutral if you are not usingwallpaper. Add throws and pillowsfor colour and pizzazz. Include athrow blanket at the end of bed toprotect the duvet and provide acover-up while reading. Cushionsand throws are widely available.
