The Rec Center lobby was filledto capacity and overflowed intothe gym with Moorestown fami-lies and friends of David Gentilegreeting each other with smilesand memories of the well-knownMoorestonian on Monday, July 13.
Family members and friends, along with township councilmembers, came to the Rec Centerfor a dedication ceremony inhonor of Gentile where a plaquewas put up in his name in thelobby as well as at Maple DawsonPark tennis courts. At the cere-mony, Mayor Victoria Napolitanoand his sister Caroline Gentilemade speeches about David high-lighting his personality, his dedi-cation to his education and
friends, his volunteerism and hislove for Moorestown.
“There was no question wewanted to honor David in thisway. David spent a lot of time atMaple Dawson Park growing up,”Caroline said.
“I think (the tennis court dedi-cation) is wonderful. I am sad theskate park didn’t work out, butthis is a good substitute. He did gothere a lot growing up,” David’s
mother Joan Gentile Taylor said.“I appreciate what Moorestown isdoing for his memory. All of myneighbors came to visit. Thereare people here I haven’t seen in20 years. It’s wonderful everyonehugs and remembers.”
David Gentile was born in 1964,growing up on Maplewood Av-enue. He attended Baker Elemen-tary School through MoorestownHigh School where he went on toplay football for MHS.
“He was always having fun.Even at a young age, he couldhave fun, but was a very fiercefootball player,” childhood friendPaul Martin said.
In 1979, at 15 years old, he sus-tained a broken neck during afootball game, causing him to be-come a quadriplegic. That didn’tstop him from graduating with
his class, earning a bachelor’s de-gree in economics, and volunteer-ing his time with the MoorestownRecreation Department and theYMCA, all the while still keepinga fun-loving attitude and sense of humor.

Moorestown Council approvedthe transfer of the township’sagreement for solid waste collec-tion services from Casworth En-terprises, Inc. to the Gold MedalEnvironmental Company at itsmeeting on July 13. It also ap-proved an ordinance on first read-ing to perform upgrades to the
Kings Highway Water TreatmentPlant.
Casworth Enterprises, Inc.,also known as Casworth Sanita-tion Services, has been handlingthe waste collection services inMoorestown for awhile.
“I think they have fit in wellwith the community. Service hasbeen what we hoped it would be,”Township Manager Scott Carewsaid.
According to Carew, a fewmonths back, Casworth ap-
proached the township to let thetown know it was in the midst of a contract that would have it andthe township taken over by GoldMedal Environmental Company.Carew had a lengthy discussionwith the two businesses and saideverything would remain thesame, except the name.
According to Gold Medal Envi-ronmental Company President
and CEO Glen Miller, it has ap-proval from the state Departmentof Environmental Protection forthe merger. It just needs approvalfrom Moorestown. If approved,Gold Medal Environmental Com-pany will close the deal with Cas-worth and what will change nextMonday “will be nothing.” FrankHozworth, one of the owners of Casworth Enterprises, Inc., willbe staying on with Gold MedalEnvironmental Company as well.
“You will still see Casworth
trucks, see the same drivers andcrew, and Frank. The only addi-tion will be John Coggins (head of the South Jersey division) will beinvolved with Frank to help withthe contract,” Miller said.
The contact information forGold Medal Environmental Serv-ices has already been given to the

Citizens should be angry withtownship’s lack of recyclingI recently moved from Moorestown to
Haddonfield Borough, which for manyyears has mirrored every public trashcanwith a recycling can and the sports fieldswith plastic 30-gallon containers.
My own experience of suggesting to
Moorestown Township's administration, public works, recreation department andlibrary to provide recycling options in pub-lic spaces was fruitless. They were polite inwelcoming the suggestion but ended withthe township mantra, "Great idea to con-
sider when the budget allows."An unseen contributor to recyclables in
the downtown's public trashcans are somebusinesses. I can attest to seeing, all too fre-quently, shop owners and office workers
jamming their trash bags into the publictrash cans, and those plastic trash bagsclearly have recyclables.
The citizens of Moorestown should beespecially angry there is no option to recy-
cle at the entrances of their new municipalcomplex, with solar on the roof; after all,Moorestown is a participant in the Sustain-able New Jersey certification program.
Regarding the July 14 “Recycling inMoorestown” letter (posted on The
Moorestown Sun’s website) from JohnKhanlian, Lisa Petriello and Barbara Ska-cel, which upon first reading seemed thework of three engaged young people, per-haps students, but at least one of the writ-ers is apparently a member of SustainableMoorestown, a township committee thatworks directly with the Town Council andtownship departments.
Therefore, the public needs to ask: Did
they get the answer, "Great idea to considerwhen the budget allows?"
Douglas Campbell
please see LETTERS, page 16
It’s hard to believe, but just last
week, we saw the first back-to-
school advertisement on TV. It took
us by surprise. “Oh, no,” we thought,
“did we sleep through all of July?”
Of course we didn’t; it’s just stores
trying to get ahead of the game and
boosting sales in a traditionally downmonth.
It got us thinking, though: We have
been presenting back-to-school cover-
age in The Sun for quite awhile now, in
many different towns, but how can we
make this coverage better?
Our quick answer – by being better
prepared.
So, even though the beginning of the
next school year is the last thing on
your mind here in mid-July, we’re ask-
ing that you put it at the forefront of
your brain –or at least in part of your
brain – for a few moments.
What will be different about this
school year?
We’re going to find out. Right now,
our reporters are compiling lists of
questions for school leaders about thenew school year.
Are there new classes students and
parents need to know about?
How about scheduling changes?
Was any work done at the schools
over the summer?
Generally, we’ll be asking school
leaders to tell us about things that
you – parents, taxpayers and students –
need to know before the 2015-16 school
year begins.
Then, we will pass that information
along to you.
Do you have any questions you’d like
our reporters to ask? If so, the time to
act is now. The more questions we get
from you, the better prepared we can
be, and the better information we can
pass along to you.
Maybe you are concerned about the
budget (who isn’t?). Or maybe you’ve
heard about a new program that you
think might be ideal for your child. Or
perhaps you are wondering about re-
pairs that were scheduled for your
child’s school. We’d love to get those questions from
you. Just send an email to us so that we
can include them on our lists.
Most school districts have done a lot
in recent years to be more responsive
to questions submitted by the public. It
makes sense. Everyone wants to have
great schools. Everyone wants to keep
taxes as low as possible, while still pro-
viding great service. One of the best
ways to achieve these goals is to build a
true public-private partnership be-
tween schools and the communities
they serve. And building that relation-
ship starts with effective communica-
tion.
So send us your questions. We’ll do
our best to get answers.
in our opinion
Ready for school?Of course you’re not, but there’s no better time to prepare tha n now
Any questions?
We are tracking down school leaders toask them questions about the upcomingschool year. So what’s on your mind? Sendus your questions, and we’ll do our best toget answers.

The Department of Parks andRecreation is pleased to have somany partners within theMoorestown community. Thereare many businesses within thecommunity that contribute to thesuccess of the department’s manyprograms and facilities. TTI Envi-ronmental, Inc. is one such com-pany. TTI Environmental Inc.,headquartered on Church Streetin Moorestown, organized and
participated in a community gar-den and park cleanup project onFriday, May 22. Twelve employeevolunteers set out to clean up therecreational and play areas atWesley Bishop Park and to revital-ize the park’s entrance garden.
TTI’s idea to give back to thecommunity was spurred by thecompany celebrating its 30th an-niversary this May. Originally lo-cated in Marlton, TTI moved to its
1253 North Church St. location, directly across from the Wesley
Bishop Park, in 2006.In appreciation of being a part
of the Moorestown community, continued business growth and inkeeping with its environmentalfocus, TTI felt it was fitting tohelp the town with something (al-most) in its front yard. The gar-den area at the Wesley Bishopsign was cultivated and the shaperedefined. In harmony with a fewexisting shrubs, TTI’s green teamadded new plantings and the gar-
den was finished with a thicklayer of black licorice mulch forplant protection and aesthetics.Volunteers also walked the sportscampus picking up trash and de-bris to clean up the play fields andplayground areas.
Due to the diligence and envi-ronmental project expertise of the volunteers, the Wesley Bishoppark project was completed in afew hours, at no cost to the town-
ship. It was a rewarding experi-ence that enhanced one of
Moorestown’s recreational cen-ters and promoted an enthusias-tic amount of group synergy, apassion for the environment anda sense of community among TTIemployees.
TTI Environmental is an inte-grated environmental servicecompany. This Service DisabledVeteran Owned Small Businessremains privately owned and isunder the leadership WilliamDolan, CEO, a veteran of the Unit-

covery of high levels of the un-regulated compound Trichloro-propane (TCP 1,2,3) in the water.
The ordinance calls for the ap-propriation of $710,000 and theborrowing of $675,600 to be usedfor preliminary engineer and de-sign expenses. According toCarew, the township has putmoney for this ordinance in thisyear’s budget.
Council also approved an ordi-
nance on first reading that callsfor the appropriation of $725,000and the borrowing of $502,550 forthe milling and paving of Pleas-
ant Valley Avenue. The second reading for both of
these ordinances will be at theJuly 27 Township Council meet-ing beginning at 7:30 p.m. in TownHall.
In other news:The Lenola Hockey Rink was
once again brought up in theworkshop before the councilmeeting. According to Council-man Manny Delgado, there hasbeen discussion of putting in a
multi-court system in the rink’splace, specifically for futsal andlacrosse, as it might bring moreactivity to the area. The multi-court system would provide moreuse and maybe a better invest-ment, according to Delgado.Council members expressed theirsupport of the idea. Carew saidthey are still looking into thingsand no decision has been made asof yet.

MEND planning annual Crab Feast fundraiser in September
Recycling receptaclesneeded around township
There are two very differentthings we've noticed when wewalk around Moorestown:
1. Every other Wednesday, wesee a blossoming of large bluecontainers along all of our streetsand curbsides. There is obviouslywidespread buy-in and supportby residents for the county's recy-cling program. Moorestown folksare glad to cooperate with the en-vironmentally friendly and sus-tainable practice of recyclingtheir bottles, cans, other accept-able containers, cardboard andpaper. And now that we havemoved to single-stream recycling,it’s easier than ever.
2. Meanwhile, on the sidewalksof our downtown business com-munity, at our new town hall com-plex, and especially at all of our
parks and ball fields, public litterbaskets and trash receptacles areabsolutely overflowing with sodacans, wax juice boxes, water andsports drink bottles, paper, etc. allof which are recyclable, but in the
absence of recycling receptaclesare instead destined for landfillswith other garbage.
These two contrasting situa-
tions clearly demonstrate thatour citizens want to cooperatewith and support recycling ef-forts, but are not being given aconvenient way to do so in publicsettings. For example, coaches orparents would have to physicallycollect all the water bottles,Gatorade bottles and juice boxesfrom the kids after each ball gameand then carry them home totheir big blue recycling contain-ers in order to ensure that theymake it into the recycling stream.
Moreover, by not capturingthese recyclables, our townshipfails to maximize a revenuestream as provided by the Munic-ipal Recycling Tonnage GrantProgram that Moorestown partic-ipates in annually. These NJDEPgrants provide financial incen-tives to municipalities to increasetheir recycling activities. In 2014,Moorestown received $58,598. Bydoing more to capture more recy-clables in our public places and in
our homes, Moorestown wouldbenefit by this increased revenuesource.
We want to propose a simple so-lution to this problem:
We ask that our township/
Town Council obtain receptaclesappropriate for each setting clear-ly labeled for recyclables andplace them along the sidewalks of
our downtown area and at allparks and outdoor recreationareas, right next to every existinglitter basket or trash can. Then, arrange for their collection on thesame schedule as trash is cur-rently collected from these publicplaces. In this way, our commonspace recyclables will make theirway into the recycling streamrather than into costly and over-flowing landfills.
By the way, kudos to theMoorestown Business Associa-tion, or whoever was responsible, for doing this exact thing allalong Main Street for“Moorestown Day” in June! Itwas great to see those blue cansuptown, and people using themappropriately, even if only on thatone special day.
We’re confident thatMoorestown residents will behappy to cooperate with this newinitiative. It will contribute to ahealthier environmental future
while enhancing our bottom line, thereby making our community amore sustainable as well as morebeautiful one in which to live.

18 THE MOORESTOWN SUN — JULY 22–28, 2015
tial to his ability to persevere andsucceed,” Caroline said.
“He was such a free spirit andthat never changed. I look backand marvel about how he stayedthe same. His injury didn’tchange him,” Martin said.
During his rehabilitation, thecommunity organized David’sDay on May 10, 1980, to raisemoney for the Gentile family, inhopes of helping with the coststhat accrued as a result of David’smedical bills. With David’s fatherbeing a banker, he started a trust
with the money raised fromDavid’s Day. One of the stipula-tions tied to the trust stated if David were to pass, the money
would be returned to the town-ship.
When David died in February2001 at the age of 36, Gentile Tay-lor did just that.
Gentile Taylor approached res-ident Allan Hanlon who wassearching for ways to raisemoney for a skate park, which atthe time was only partially com-plete. Gentile Taylor donated$120,000 toward the constructionof the skate park, which was laterdedicated in David’s name in2002. Money was dedicated for anambulance as well as to theYMCA.
Unfortunately, last year, theDavid Gentile Skatepark wastaken down.
Not wanting David’s name todisappear, Sandra McGuire, aneighbor and friend of David’s,along with Theresa Miller of the
Department of Parks and Recre-ation, worked to propose hisname live on in some other way.Township council decided tomove his name to the tenniscourts at Maple Dawson Parkwhere he used to play when hewas a child.
“This is about more than thededication. It is what David didwith his life after the accident.Paralyzed from the neck down, hegraduated from high school, hegraduated from college, heworked on the Recreation Boardand the Board of Directors at theYMCA. He even established a sys-
tem for the YMCA to regulatepledges. He did all of that whileconfined to a wheelchair. That iswhat I think is most important,”
McGuire said. The plaque dedicated to David
states “Memorial Tennis Courts; In remembrance of David Gen-tile; A Moorestown athlete wholoved this park and always playedwith heart. A free spirit and fair-ness to all; Dedicated 2015.”
Those who knew David hope heis remembered for his sense of humor, his passion for sports andfun, as well as for all he did forgenerations to come.
“I hope people remember hisgreat sense of humor. He lovedthe town. He could turn a cloudyday into a sunny day,” McGuiresaid.
“I did not have the pleasure of knowing David, but I know itwould’ve been a pleasure becauseeveryone who did know him re-members him so fondly. I think itis so wonderful we have theseplaques here at the Rec Centerand Maple Dawson Park that willbe an introduction to David for
those of us who never got thechance to meet him and especial-ly for young people in our com-munity who can see him as a rolemodel, as a true Moorestonianand someone who is a great exam-ple. In that way, his commitmentto sportsmanship and fun willlive on in a new generationof Moorestonians,” Napolitanosaid.
The township and David’s fam-ily thanked everyone who put inthe hard work to get the plaques
dedicated for David.“Many thanks to Mayor
Napolitano, Town Council, There-sa Miller and the Parks andRecreation Department for recog-nizing David this way. We are es-pecially grateful for SandyMcGuire for proposing the proj-ect in the first place and for beinghis passion champion from startto finish. Thanks everyone forcoming,” Caroline said.
