Howev- er, at Jeff Young Memorial Park, Kennedy Hubbard, along with many volunteers, did not let the storm stop them from reaching their goal. Hubbard, a recently graduated senior and volleyball player from Moorestown High School, along with many volunteers, has been working hard the past few days to get new sand volleyball courts built within the township. They were approved to be built at Jeff Young Memorial Park and are to be named in her and her non-prof- it foundation’s name – Kennedy’s Cause, Inc. “It’s going to be amazing, everyone is going to know that it will be by us. Volleyball is a huge part of my life, and everyone who knows that is excited. This is something that I feel I’ve given to the community, who has done so much for me. This is just one way to give back,” Hubbard said. Hubbard suffers from Lym- phatic Malformation. Since birth, she has had a large facial differ- ence and a trach since her airway is blocked. Six years ago, she cre- ated Kennedy’s Cause to raise funds for medical research to find a cure for Lymphatic Malforma- tion and assist families facing fi- nancial struggles due to medical expenses that aren't covered by insurance. Despite the Lymphatic Malfor- mation, Hubbard was inspired to play volleyball and wanted to join from watching her sister play. And play she did, as she has been the starting setter on her high school varsity team for two years as well as played four years of club volley- ball. Volleyball has saved Hubbard in so many ways. The sport has given her self- confidence and friend- ships that she would have never had. “I’ve known Kennedy since I was in third grade. A lot of us know her through school and the volleyball program. She is a phe- nomenal volleyball player; she is actually going to play volleyball at Stockton. Everyone has grown to know her through the commu- nity and has looked up to her and watched her grow. She has really turned into a phenomenal per- son,” said Rachel Fordham, a MHS graduate and volleyball player. “Honestly, if it weren’t for the sport, I wouldn’t be who I am today and I wouldn’t have the friends and support system that I do. With me going off to college next year, I just wanted to give back to the local community. And why not bring volleyball into it?” Hubbard said. The Moorestown TownshipCouncil meeting on June 22 pro-vided council with an update onthe Lenola Jeff Young MemorialPark hockey rink and the an-nouncement of a dedication cere-mony for David Gentile on July 13at 6:30 p.m.Scott Taylor, the township’s

landscape architect and vice pres-ident of Taylor Design Group, gave a presentation on the re-search he has done in regard tothe hockey rink.At a June council meeting,

Township Manager Scott Carewmentioned the Jeff Young Memo-rial Park hockey rink, which wasdemolished last year, could be putback into commission and a por-tion of the Wesley Bishop Parkdasher boards could be used.At this meeting, Taylor gave

further details and proposed recy-cling the hockey rink frame atWesley Bishop Park, which willbe removed, and relocating that tothe rink at Jeff Young Memorial

Park. The rink at Jeff Young Parkis smaller than the Wesley BishopPark rink, however the frameshould still be able to be used. Thedasher boards would have to bereplaced. There is still some budgeting

that needs to be worked out, ac-cording to Carew, such as thedasher boards themselves. But byusing the frame, it would reducethe money needed for the JeffYoung Memorial Park hockeyrink. As the Jeff Young Memorial

Park rink is not used by an identi-fiable athletic association, thereis no identifiable group for main-tenance of the facility. The town-ship is looking to put together agroup to donate time and moneyfor it. According to Carew, therehave been people from Lenolawho have expressed donating andvolunteering time and effort tothe rink. The rink at Wesley Bishop

Park is staying a rink as well. However, this rink is used by

The first time someone enters a competi-tion, it isn’t often they win. Many times ittakes several tries, but not for Moorestownrising 10th grader Terry Nguyen. With her first competition submission,

Nguyen won first place in the 3rd Congres-sional District as part of the nationwideCongressional Art Competition 2015 spon-sored by the U.S. House of Representatives. The competition rewards talented highschool students for their artistic abilitiesand dedication. “I was very excited and happy to win be-

cause it was my first art competition that I

ever participated in,”Nguyen said.Nguyen has always

liked art. It bringspeace to her mind andurges her to utilizemaximum power tocome up with new andcreative ideas. In fourth grade, she

began taking art class-es outside of school. There, she learned the fundamentals andimproved her art skills.“I have loved art since I was young. I

started taking art classes outside of schoolwhen I was in fourth grade because it gave

peace to my mind and allowed me to thinkoutside of the box. After I’m finished, I feelvery proud of it and I just enjoy looking atthe work I have done. It’s been a long-timehobby of mine,” Nguyen said. She learned about the contest through

her teacher John Shing, who owns a pri-vate studio she goes to every week. He men-tioned she should try out and she decidedto do so.With only a month to prepare, as she

was a little late knowing about the contest,Nguyen worked every day, at least an hourand a half on the weekends and about anhour during the week.

From all of us at Elauwit Mediato all of our loyal readers, wewish you the happiest and

healthiest Fourth of July.As rough as things may be at times

in our country – our economy is stillrecovering, race is still an issue, andthe Phillies can’t seem to win a base-ball game anymore – things could be alot worse for us.A quick glance at the world around

us reveals just how fortunate we are, asAmericans, to have the freedoms wedo. And let’s face it, these freedoms weoften take for granted.Imagine, for just a moment, what it

must be like to live in Syria. Imagine what it must be like to live

in Iraq.

Imagine what it must be like to livein Egypt, where there’s still instabilityand a lack of confidence in the nation’sparliament. We live in a nation where, despite

our differences, we manage to co-existpeacefully for the most part.We live in a nation where our Con-

gress and where the office of the presi-dent have functioned and survived for239 years. We live in a nation where, for the

most part, we’re free to do as we please. This simply isn’t the case in many

corners of the world.Today, we give thanks for the liber-

ties won for us hundreds of years ago.We give thanks for the many women

and men who have made incrediblesacrifices to protect these freedoms inbattle in Afghanistan and Iraq – andcountless other places abroad. We remember their families who,

like they, have also made sacrifices bysaying goodbye so we can do things assimple as having a barbecue sometimethis weekend. Finally, we give thanks for all that

America is and stands for. It may notbe perfect, but a quick glance of thenews shows: life could be much worse.

For her idea for the painting,Nguyen thought about Americaand asked herself what wouldrepresent it well. She was inspired when she

read a news article about thefarewell of Judge, a K-9 dog. Shewas touched by the bond betweena police officer and his dog, as

well as their services. Nguyenwas also inspired by one of her fa-vorite movies “Hachi,” whichcenters on the special bond be-tween Hachi, a dog, and hisowner. So she painted a soldierand the bond between him andhis dog.Nguyen started off with a

sketch, using references fromtextbooks, movies, articles andthe Internet. Then she paintedher work with acrylic paint oncanvas. After the piece was done,

Nguyen stood back and gave it agood, hard look. She wanted tohighlight the special bond be-tween the canine and handler, soshe decided on “Dear Friend” asthe title.“It is simple, two words, but to

me, I think they hold a lot ofmeaning to them,” Nguyen said.According to Nguyen’s descrip-

tion: "This painting is focused onthe deep and affectionate bond be-

tween a soldier and his dog com-panion. A moment of their peaceand happiness is captured as theresting soldier leans and holdshis German shepherd while fac-ing toward the horizon. Despitethe horror and fear of warfare, their presence provides a sense ofloyalty, friendship, reliance, pro-tection and comfort for eachother. In mind, body and spirit, the connections between thesetwo friends are weaved intangi-bly.”Nguyen was very excited and

happy to enter her first competi-tion and didn’t want to disappointherself. She was satisfied withher work, but didn’t expect towin.About a month after submis-

sion, Rep. Tom MacArthur calledand congratulated Nguyen. Shewas ecstatic.“I feel very proud of it because

Hubbard approached CindiBritton of the Department ofParks and Recreation with heridea for the sand volleyballcourts. With Britton’s help, Hub-bard pitched her idea to theRecreation Advisory Board, which was in favor of it andbrought it to township council, which unanimously gave thesand volleyball courts its bless-ing.“Nobody didn’t like the idea,”

Britton said.Jeff Young Memorial Park in

the Lenola section of the townwas chosen for the courts as therewas the space for them. Thecourts are built to regulationNCAA sand volleyball standards.“It is an awesome location.

There are a lot of people in thearea who can benefit from thesecourts,” Britton said.“I live in the Lenola section of

town. When we lost the hockeyrink, it was a hard blow becausemy kids and the neighborhoodlost a place to play. With thesecourts, we are gaining anotherathletic facility down this end oftown and I think it is great,” MHSvolleyball coach Scott Atkinsonsaid. “As a volleyball coach, Ithink it is great that we’re goingto have sand courts that we canget on and train on. Volleyball isone of the unique sports that youcan play well past your highschool career. Now it will be giv-ing our adults the opportunity togo and out play on sand in reallyone of the best facilities awayfrom the beaches.”Hubbard, Britton and many

other volunteers gave their timelast week to put together thecourts, despite the storm onWednesday. They’ve been work-ing hard to get the courts doneand up and running as soon asthey can.Everything for the courts was

donated. The township donatedthe plot of land; Sam SchlindweinExcavation removed the 400 tonsof dirt and provided the 400 tonsof sand; The Kennedy Companies

donated landscaping fabric and adrainage pipe; Sports Imports do-nated the nets, poles and anchors;Scott Mooney of the Cherry HillVolleyball Club, and Kennedy’sCause made a monetary dona-tion; and Moorestown’s Depart-ment of Parks and Recreation, girls and boys high school volley-ball teams, Lenola firefighters,Kennedy Cause volunteers andhigh school students all came outas volunteers.“I think this is wonderful. She

got so much from volleyball. It iswonderful to see all of these peo-ple coming forward for Kennedy,”Britton said. For her hard work, the volley-

ball courts are being named inHubbard’s and her foundation’shonor.

“I think the fact that it is goingto have Kennedy’s name on it,with everything she’s given to thecommunity just by beingKennedy, will be nice. To havesomething here in her name forpeople to have her memory intheir minds for a very long time isoutstanding,” Atkinson said.As of Thursday, June 25 the

courts were still being put togeth-er, but Hubbard and Brittonhoped to have them done withinthe next few days. When theyopen, the courts will be availablefor use by all.To learn more about the courts
