My thanks to all who organised, helped and attended our Winter Fair on Friday.

It was wonderful! Great turn out, great activities, great stalls, delicious refreshments and

interesting chat!

The children were extremely well behaved, considering their excitement and the amount of

people in the hall. The selection of art and craft activates on offer for them was fantastic.

Thank you everyone!

It has been an excellent term for showcasing some of our many achievements.

A group of pupils shared their Community Teams Learning on Sustainability, at the ‘Keep Scotland Beautiful

Conference’ on climate change. Please see their report for details and help us keep our environment safe.

P7 pupils and staff had an amazing opportunity to learn about life in the legal system through a ‘Mock Court’

project. This culminated when the children defended or pursued a case held in a real court with a real judge! Two

of the groups are through to the next round in the competition. Good luck P7!

P4 shared their learning on one of our favourite projects, life in Old Edinburgh during the time of Mary Queen of

Scots. I loved the photos and exciting activities they organised to share with their families.

P3 did their Dinosaur Stomp with parents on Wednesday. A great time was had by all!

As part of transition to High School we continue to work with Boroughmuir High School to develop shared

activities on maths, healthy eating, art and science. We have also added an ‘Hour of Code’ to this for a group of P6

pupils. If this works out well, it is something I am interested in developing further after the holidays.

All the transition activities have been well received and will continue next term. P7s have wonderful Science

Lectures this month which I am sure they will enjoy very much.

Please remind your child to bring their bike and or scooter home with them each evening. There are a

selection left in the sheds at the end of each day. Unfortunately, they are too tempting and are going missing before

the morning arrives.

Our Christmas tree is decorated and everyone is looking forward to pantomimes, nativities, songs and end of term

class parties. Have fun everyone!

It seems very early to say this, but as this is our last Newsletter of the year……….. I’ll take this opportunity to

wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Best Wishes for 2016.

As the weather turns colder, please remember to send

your child to school appropriately dressed for the

Scottish winter! Pupils generally play

outside (except in extremely bad weather) at break

and lunchtimes, so they do need to

bring a suitable coat to school. Coats,

hats, gloves and scarves should all be

named, so they can be reunited with

their owners if lost! Thank you.

Spare Clothing Appeal

If you have any spare clothing you

can donate to the school for our

accident collection, please hand these

in to the School Office.

In particular we always need socks

(boys and girls), tights and spare gym

shoes.

Lost Property

Please note that any unlabelled and uncollected items of lost

property remaining in the school by our return from Christmas break

(Thursday, 7 January) will go into the Rag Bag charity

collection.

If you think your child has lost property, please check our lost

property area in the school. Please note, the school dining hall is

closed from 5pm for cleaning.

screenings scheduled for Monday, 07

screenings will take place during

In November judges selected the 20 finalists for the Green Pencil Award

2015, which had the theme of Scotland’s Food and Drink.

The annual competition sets pupils in P4-7 the challenge of responding to

an environmental theme with a piece of creative writing.

This year there were a record number of entries, with 1,500 being

received from schools and libraries across Edinburgh. The standard was

very high, so the judging panel had a particularly difficult decision to make

in selecting the finalists.

Scottish Brambles are the best!

Countrysides are full of them in autumn.

Optimistic you should be when you pick the big, black beauty.

This delicate fruit is easy to squash so be careful with them.

Trousers and gloves will give you protection against the thorny stalk.

I love the pure taste of the refreshing juicy sweetness.

Some have a big burst of flavour...

However, some of them give you the surprise of being sour!

Bring a tub in case you find any to take home.

Race to pick the sweetest looking ones before the birds have their feast.

All the wee bubbles on the berry should be black when ripe.

Morning dew gives the brambles their daily shower.

Brambles and tasty apples go well in a crumble.

Lovely flavours mixed together excite my taste buds.

Everlasting memories of good times searching for brambles.

September is the best month to pick those delicious Scottish brambles.

I thought I would write a small piece about all the excellent sports achievements we have had since we came

back in August.

Grangemouth Road Relays

The first competition that some of the children entered was the Grangemouth Road Relay Championships,

held at Grangemouth Stadium in October. There was a high quality of runners from all over the lowlands of

Scotland. There were well over fifty schools who came to this competition and one of our P7 boys teams

won the Cup! They beat 38 other teams to win. This race is a tag race so all the boys had to run a mile and

the fastest overall time was the winner. Sam Glass, Archie Tomlinson and Torrance Bradford had an

overall time of 14.55 minutes. They were the only team to be under 15 minutes.

All the other teams did exceptionally well too. The other P7 boys team came in 16th overall (Alfie Atterton,

Brodie Duffin and Philip Bergeret).

One of the P7 girls teams came in 5th (Addie Handley, Molly Drummond and Samantha Adams) and the

other P7 girls team came in 19th (Iris Andrew, Izabella O’Neill and Esme McComb) they were

competing against 31 other teams.

The P6s did very well considering this was their first large race competition. One team of boys (Richard

Adams, Ben Khaifah and Robbie Duncan) came in 9th out of 38 teams. No mean feat! And the second

group of P6 boys came in 26th (Corin Leckie Howell, Cameron Gemmell and Oliver Trigg). We only had

one girls P6 team in the race and they were 9th as well out of 27 teams (Lola Drummond, Olivia Milne and

Phoebe Pryce). Well done to all of them and to the parents and helper s I had on the day. Thankyou so

much for coming.

A special thank you to Mrs Keefe, Mrs McLachlan and Mr Buglass for giving up your Saturday!

Scottish Midlothian Swimming Championships

The next competition was the Scottish Midlothian Swimming Championships. Sam Glass competed in the

under 50 Metre Freestyle and came second place with a time of 32.82. Sam missed first place by 2.09

seconds! However, he has been given a place in the Scottish Schools Swimming Championships in January

so well done Sam and good luck in January!

Sportshall Competition

Moving along, we had our Sportshall Competition on the 23rd of November. We had a fantastic time at this

and came in second place overall with a final points score of 191. The only schools to beat us were Dean

Park Primary and Sciennes Primary with a joint score of 196. We are going into the final in January and I

have no doubt that we will do well. The children were wearing the new sports kit and looked very much the

part!

Boyd Anderson Ski Competition

Finally, we competed in the Hillend Boyd Anderson ski competition on Monday the 30th Nov where one of

our teams WON one of the trophies. Well done to Euan Stembridge, Archie Tomlinson, Brodie Duffin,

Ollie Burrows, Max Richmond and Richard Adams. The other team did very well too and this

included Thomas Miedzybrodzki, Philip Bergeret, Samantha Adams, Iris Andrew, Torrance Bradford

and Harry Phillips. The two fastest racers from the teams were Harry Phillips and Euan Stembridge. I must

mention though that Iris Andrew was hot on Harry’s tail!

Well done to all the children that compete at any competition.

The Dance School at Broughton High School currently has two opportunities that might be of

interest to some P5/6 and P7 students for courses starting in August 2016.

The P6/7 Talented Young Performers Programme on Friday afternoons for students currently in

P5/6 (moving into P6/7 in August 2016) and our full-time programme which is integrated into the

dancers timetable from S1 at Broughton High School. The full-time option is available to students

currently in P7 and moving into S1 in August 2016.

P6/7 BROUGHTON HIGH SCHOOL TALENTED YOUNG PERFORMER PROGRAMME

(Auditions are on 20th May 2016 for students currently in P5/6 moving into P6/7 in August 2016)

Broughton High Schools Talented Young Performer Programme is for Primary 6 and Primary 7 pupils interested in dance. Pupils from across Edinburgh can audition to be part of the programme. The programme is run by Broughton High School's Specialist Dance Department and supported by the City of Edinburgh Council Arts and Creative Learning Team. Classes are on a Friday afternoon from 2-4pm in the Dance Studios at Broughton High School. Throughout the year students will participate in weekly technique classes in jazz, contemporary and choreography. Ballet technique will also be taught but not through spe-cific ballet classes. The pupils will also have the opportunity to perform in Broughton High School’s Specialist Dance end of year show in June.

BROUGHTON HIGH SCHOOL DANCE SCHOOL

(Auditions in January for students currently in P7 moving into S1 in August 2016)

Broughton High School offers its pupils the unique opportunity of receiving specialist dance tuition

alongside the mainstream secondary curriculum. Entry on to the course is by audition only. The

application form can be found on the school website. Along with the application form we ask for a

copy of their most recent school report card. Your child will then be invited to an initial preliminary

audition (January 29th 2016), if successful they will be invited back for a second and final practical

audition (March 4th 2016). Following this there may be parental interviews before formally being

offered a place on the dance course. During the auditions students will participate in a practical class

led by staff from the specialist dance school. The class will involve ballet, jazz and contemporary.

Everything that the students will be asked to do will be taught on the day. Successful students will

be selected for their enthusiasm for dance, allied to flexibility, musicality, creativity and

potential.
