Welcome to a new school year.

WOEA has planned a year with many opportunities for you

OEA Fund for Children and Public Education Screenings in WOEA—May and June 2010

As we prepare for Campaign 2010, WOEA members worked to screen candidates for the Ohio House and Senate in order to share the word about which candidates are strong supporters of our Education Association, our profession, and our students. The WOEA Fund for Children and Public Education District Screening Committee (WOEA FCPE DSC) invited every local president in WOEA to participate and/or send his/her designee to participate in these screenings. On May 14, 2010 in St. Mary’s at the Country Hearth Hotel, the WOEA FCPE DSC met and screened a candidate for House District (HD) 4. The WOEA FCPE DSC was also prepared to screen for HDs 77 and 78 and SD 12. Neither the incumbents nor the candidates chose to participate in the screenings after repeated letters and phone calls inviting the candidates to participate. As a result of these screenings the following endorsements were made because of the candidates’ support of OEA positions: • Connie Miller for HD 4 • In HDs 77 and 78 and SD 12 no candidate could be endorsed as no

candidate participated in the process. On June 14, 2010, in Springfield’s Marriott Courtyard, the WOEA FCPE DSC met was willing to screen Ohio Senator Jarrod B. Martin who is running unopposed for Senate District 70, but he did not respond to repeated letters and phone calls inviting him to participate. As a result, no endorsement could be made. On June 16 and 17, 2010, in the Troy Uniserv Office, WOEA FCPE DSC met and screened for SD 5 Bill Beagle and Senator Fred Strahorn; for HD 39 House Representative Clayton Luckie and; for HD 40 House Representative Roland Winburn. In HD 39 and HD 40, the other candidates did not respond to repeated letters and phone calls inviting them to participate. As a result of these screenings the following endorsements were made because of the candidates’ support of OEA positions: • Senator Fred Strahorn for SD 5 • House Representative Clayton Luckie for HD 39 • House Representative Roland Winburn for HD 40 On June 17 and 18, 2010, at the DEA Uniserv Office, the WOEA FCPE DSC met and screened for HD 36 Carl Fisher and Mike Henne, for HD 37 John Doll, for HD 38 Steve Byington. For HDs 37 and 38, the other candidates did not respond to repeated letters and phone calls inviting them to participate. As a result of these screenings the following endorsements were made because of the candidates’ support of OEA positions: • Carl Fisher for HD 36 • John Doll for HD 37 • Steven Byington for HD 38 The local presidents and members who participated over the course of all the screenings were Coldwater Teachers Organization President Sophia Rodriguez, Coldwater Vice-President Thad Forsthofer, Dayton Education Association President Pat Lynch, Dayton Education Association Vice-President-Elect Janifer Trowles, Dayton Education Association Legislative Chair Stan Bear and Huber Heights Education Association President Becky Whited. The members of the WOEA FCPE DSC who participated were Juanita Collein (Dayton), Linda Fisher (Celina), Joni Watson (Dayton), Dawn Wojcik (Chair-Northmont), Wanda Adams (alternate-retired-Northmont), Joan Klein (alternate-retired Greenville), Phil Long (alternate-Celina), Sophia Rodriguez (alternate-Coldwater), Kay Welch (alternate-retired Troy/Huber). As OEA Board of Directors Juanita Collein, Phil Long, and Janifer Trowles are also Senate District liaisons and participated in the screenings as a result of that commitment.

The OEA Labor Relations Consultants who assisted with these screenings were from the Troy Uniserv Office: George Bozovich, Shelly Jackson, and Pat Johnson; From the OEA HQ Annex Uniserv Office: Amber Kirkwood; From the Fairborn Uniserv Office: Tom Renaud and Renee Townley.
