The Monthly Weather Review - Victoria is produced twelve times each year by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology's VictoriaClimate Services Centre.

It is intended to provide a concise but informative overview of the temperatures, rainfall and significant weather events in Victoriafor the month.

To keep the Monthly Weather Review as timely as possible, much of the information is based on electronic reports. Although everyeffort is made to ensure the accuracy of these reports, the results can be considered only preliminary until complete quality controlprocedures have been carried out. Major discrepancies will be noted in later issues.

Units of measurementExcept where noted, temperature is given in degrees Celsius (°C), rainfall in millimetres (mm), and wind speed in kilometres per hour(km/h).

Observation times and periodsEach station in Victoria makes its main observation for the day at 9 am local time. At this time, the precipitation over the past 24hours is determined, and maximum and minimum thermometers are also read and reset. In this publication, the followingconventions are used for assigning dates to the observations made:

Maximum temperatures are for the 24 hours from 9 am on the date mentioned. They normally occur in the afternoon of that day.

Minimum temperatures are for the 24 hours to 9 am on the date mentioned. They normally occur in the early morning of that day.

Daily rainfall is for the 24 hours to 9 am on the date mentioned. This means a significant fraction of the rain may have occurred onthe previous calendar day.

Monthly rainfall is for the period from 9 am on the last day of the previous month to 9 am on the last day of this month.

Maximum daily wind gusts are in the 24 hours from midnight to midnight.

Climatological valuesThe climatological averages shown in the text and tables are generally long-term means based on observations from all availableyears of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannotthen be calculated reliably. Climatological extremes are generally taken from available observations from all available years of record.The number of years can vary substantially from site to site.

OverviewAcross the State of Victoria, overnight minimumtemperatures were much warmer than those usuallyexperienced, whilst daytime maximum temperaturesat most localities were just slightly warmer thanthose registered in the past. Total rainfall for themonth was generally more than that usuallyrecorded at most northern localities, but slightlybelow normal across much of the south.

Significant weatherThunderstormsOn the 20th, thunderstorms in the Melbourne areaintensified over Port Phillip Bay and moved slowly tothe southeast over the Mornington Peninsula. Heavyrain produced flash flooding at Mt Eliza with reportsof over 100 mm falling during the event. 52.4 mmwas observed at Moorooduc to 9 am on the 21st. Awind gust of 94 km/h was recorded at Frankston at6:20 pm.

WindA cold front moved across the state on the 11th witha vigorous west to southwesterly airflow establishingin its wake. Wilsons Promontory recorded gusts to124 km/h from the WSW, with an average windspeed of 67 km/h at 11:08 pm.

On the 24th, a vigorous westerly flow across thestate with an embedded cold front resulted in stormforce winds in some coastal and alpine areas. MtHotham recorded gusts to 111 km/h from the northat 12:18 pm.

FloodsOn the 7th, a minor flood warning was issued for theLoddon River upstream of Laanecoorie Reservoir.

On the 25th, a minor flood warning was issued forthe Kiewa River.

Synoptic summaryRainfall was above average in the northwest of theState and below normal through East Gippsland. Thiswas consistent with cold fronts interacting withtropical moisture over Western Australia, reachingwestern Victoria but then slipping away to the southand weakening as they crossed the remainder of theState.

This rainfall pattern was reflected in an analysis ofMean Sea Level Pressure (MSLP) across theAustralian region, with mean pressure up to 3 hPabelow normal in the Bight and slightly above normalin the western Tasman Sea. The combination offrequent fronts in the Bight and high pressuresystems in the Tasman Sea resulted in persistentnorthwesterly winds and above averagetemperatures across the State.

TemperaturesOvernight minimum temperatures were muchwarmer than those usually experienced, whilstdaytime maximum temperatures at most localitieswere just slightly warmer than those registered inthe past.

The mean temperature for Victoria in April 2010 was15.96 °C, which is 1.46 °C above the long-termaverage. This was largely as a result of persistentnorthwesterly winds across the State.

Minimum temperaturesThe coldest night was −3.4 °C at Dinner Plain (MountHotham Airport) on the 15th.

The coolest nights on average were 3.7 °C at MountHotham, followed by 4.2 °C at Dinner Plain (MountHotham Airport), followed by 4.5 °C at Falls Creek.

The warmest nights on average were 14.8 °C at GaboIsland Lighthouse, followed by 14.7 °C at FrankstonAWS and Wilsons Promontory Lighthouse, followedby 14.6 °C at Rhyll.

The warmest night was 21.1 °C at Moorabbin Airporton the 23rd.

Stawell Aerodrome recorded its record highest Aprildaily minimum temperature of 17.6 °C on the 6th.

RainfallTotal rainfall for the month was generally more thanthat usually recorded at most northern localities, butslightly below normal across much of the south.Moist northwesterly winds ahead of an approachingcold front resulted in Falls Creek recording over100 mm of rain over the 23rd and 24th.

The wettest overall was 255.2 mm at Falls Creek(Rocky Valley).
