The Monthly Weather Review - Tasmania is produced twelve times each year by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology's Tasmaniaand Antarctica Climate Services Centre.

It is intended to provide a concise but informative overview of the temperatures, rainfall and significant weather events in Tasmaniafor the month.

To keep the Monthly Weather Review as timely as possible, much of the information is based on electronic reports. Although everyeffort is made to ensure the accuracy of these reports, the results can be considered only preliminary until complete quality controlprocedures have been carried out. Major discrepancies will be noted in later issues.

We are keen to ensure that the Monthly Weather Review is appropriate to the needs of its readers. If you have any comments orsuggestions, please do not hesitate to contact us:

Units of measurementExcept where noted, temperature is given in degrees Celsius (°C), rainfall in millimetres (mm), and wind speed in kilometres per hour(km/h).

Observation times and periodsEach station in Tasmania makes its main observation for the day at 9 am local time. At this time, the precipitation over the past 24hours is determined, and maximum and minimum thermometers are also read and reset. In this publication, the followingconventions are used for assigning dates to the observations made:

Maximum temperatures are for the 24 hours from 9 am on the date mentioned. They normally occur in the afternoon of that day.

Minimum temperatures are for the 24 hours to 9 am on the date mentioned. They normally occur in the early morning of that day.

Mean temperatures are the average of the daily maximum and daily minimum temperatures.

Daily rainfall is for the 24 hours to 9 am on the date mentioned. This means a significant fraction of the rain may have occurred onthe previous calendar day.

Monthly rainfall is for the period from 9 am on the last day of the previous month to 9 am on the last day of this month.

Maximum daily wind gusts are in the 24 hours from midnight to midnight.

Climatological valuesThe climatological averages shown in the text and tables are generally long-term means based on observations from all availableyears of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannotthen be calculated reliably. Climatological extremes are generally taken from available observations from all available years of record. The number of years can vary substantially from site to site.

Significant weatherCold snap with snowA cold front crossed Tasmania overnight on the22nd, with southerly winds behind the frontdirecting an extremely cold air mass across the stateon the 23rd. Showers fell as snow about higherground. In the west, snow between Queenstown andDerwent Bridge was reported to have limited accessto the Lyell Highway to four wheel drives only.Thunderstorms were reported in some areas, withlightning strikes causing power outages. Maximumtemperatures were very cold, with several sitesrecording their coldest March day on record on the23rd. The temperature at Mount Read only reacheda maximum of 0 °C, the second lowest Marchmaximum temperature ever recorded in Tasmania. The morning of the 24th was also very cold, withCape Bruny Lighthouse, Eddystone Point andScottsdale recording their lowest Marchtemperatures on record.

Synoptic summaryThe passage of low pressure systems to the west andsouth of Tasmania were a key feature of the state'sweather in March, contributing to the above averagerainfall in the west and north of the state.

The first week of March saw two high pressuresystems move slowly eastwards past southernAustralia and to the south of Tasmania. On the 3rd, alow pressure system developed in a trough over thesoutheast mainland before moving down along thewest coast of Tasmania on the 4th as the first highmoved into the Tasman Sea. The low directed a coldfront and trough of low pressure across the state onthe 4th with rain extending state-wide, heaviest inthe north and west. There were also isolatedthunderstorms with the passage of the trough. Earlyon the 6th a trough of low pressure crossed the stateas the second high moved to the southwest ofTasmania. The trough generated thunderstormsabout the northeast and extended showers acrossmost districts. As the high pressure system lingeredin the Tasman Sea on the 7th, a low pressure systemdeveloped off the southeast coast of Australia andmoved down toward the northeast coast ofTasmania on the 8th, generating showers in the area.Day time temperatures were cool initially, butwarmed ahead of the cold front on the 4th, anddropped again in the cool southwest winds ahead ofthe second high. Minimum temperatures were belowaverage on the 2nd and 3rd, but were otherwisegenerally warmer than average in the cloudyconditions. In the north temperatures were mostlyclose to average.

A cold front crossed Tasmania late on the 9th,delivering a little rain to the south and west. A ridgeof high pressure then moved in over Tasmania fromthe 10th to the 14th as a high pressure systemmoved across southeast Australia and into theTasman Sea. Temperatures warmed as the highmoved east and winds shifted northerly, with manysites recording their warmest day of the month onthe 14th.

A low pressure system approached from the GreatAustralian Bight on the 14th, passing well to thesouth late on the 15th. Many sites had their warmestnight of the month on the 15th or 16th, in the cloudyand warm conditions ahead of the low. The lowdirected a trough of low pressure and associatedcold front across Tasmania overnight on the 15thand into the morning of the 16th, generating heavyrain and thunderstorms in the north, and showerselsewhere. Some sites in the northwest recordedtheir wettest March day on record with this event, and there were several car crashes in the wetweather. Another high pressure system movedacross southeast Australia and into the Tasman Seafrom the 17th to the 20th. Temperatures generallyremained warmer than average, with isolated

showers, mainly about the west on the 17th as aweak cold front clipped the south of the state.

On the 20th, another low and cold front approachedTasmania from the west. The cold front crossed thestate on the 21st, followed by a second cold frontlate on the 22nd, delivering heavy rainfall to much ofthe west. The second front directed a very cold airmass across the state, with showers, some hail andsnow down to around 700 metres. Several sitesrecorded their coldest March day on record on the23rd, and a few sites their lowest Marchtemperature on record on the morning of the 24th.Winds were strong behind the front on the 23rd,with gusts reaching 146 km/h on Hogan Island and143 km/h at Cape Grim. Only a couple of strongerwind gusts have been recorded in Tasmania duringMarch.

Temperatures remained below average through tothe 28th as a high pressure system moved eastwardssouth of the Great Australian Bight and into theTasman Sea. There were isolated showers during thistime, with areas of morning fog on some days.

A low pressure system developed in Bass Strait onthe 28th, generating thunderstorms about FlindersIsland. The low moved down along the east coast onthe 29th as another low developed to the west ofTasmania, before weakening as a cold frontapproached from the west on the 30th.Temperatures warmed ahead of the front, withisolated showers about the north and east. The frontcrossed the state on the 31st, extending showers tomost areas, with thunderstorms in Bass Strait.

Maximum temperaturesThe warmest period of March occurred between the13th and 21st, when high pressure systems lingeredover the Tasman Sea and northerly winds prevailedfor much of the time. A weak cold front crossed thestate overnight on the 15th, followed by a second onthe 17th, but temperatures remained warmer thanaverage. Most sites had their warmest day of themonth on the 14th, 19th or 20th, in northerly windsahead of cold fronts. There was an absence of veryhot days however: Strahan (30.3 °C) and Launceston(30.0 °C) were the only two sites to reach 30 °C, bothon the 14th.

Maximum temperatures were below average formuch of the first week of March, but were coldestfrom the 22nd to 28th following the passage of avigorous cold front, which directed a very cold airmass across Tasmania. March 23 was the coldest dayof the month, with maximum temperaturesremaining below 15 degrees in most areas, andseveral sites recording the coldest March day onrecord. Mount Read's maximum of 0 °C on the 23rdwas Tasmania's second coldest March day on record;the coldest is −0.5 °C at Mount Wellington, set in2011.

Overall, average maximum temperatures were onthe cool side of average across most of the state.Launceston (Ti Tree Bend) had the warmest days onaverage with a mean March maximum temperatureof 22.1 °C, whilst Mount Wellington had the coolestdays on average with 10.4 °C.

Minimum temperaturesOvernight temperatures were warmer than usual formost March. The 15th, 16th, 20th and 21st were thewarmest nights, with winds, cloud and rainpreventing much cooling. Flinders Island Airport hadthe warmest night, not falling below 19.7 °C in the 24hours to 9 am on the 15th, while Launceston(19.0 °C), Dover (17.8 °C) and Maydena (16.4 °C) allhad their warmest March night on record on the21st.

The only cool period occurred between the 22nd and28th, following the passage of a vigorous cold frontwhich directed very cold air over Tasmania. On the24th, minimums were up to 10 °C below average anda few sites set new low temperature records forMarch. Mount Wellington recorded the lowesttemperature of the month, with −3.0 °C on the 24th.

Overall, minimum temperatures were half a degreewarmer than usual in most areas. The coolest nightson average were at Mount Wellington with 3.4 °C,whilst the warmest nights on average were at SwanIsland with 14.3 °C.

RainfallThree major rain events affected Tasmania in March:a low pressure system and cold front on the 3rd and4th brought falls of 30 to 60 mm to much of thenorth and west with lighter falls across the rest ofthe state; a further 30 to 60 mm fell in the northwestwith a similar pattern on the 15−16th; and coldfronts between the 21st and 23rd (that included theremnants of ex-tropical cyclone Lua) delivered 60 to90 mm to much of the west. On the 16th Waratah(68.2 mm), Gowrie Park (53.2 mm) and Irishtown(50.6 mm) had their wettest March day on record.Mount Read had the wettest day recording 83.6 mmon the 5th, but Sheffield was also very wet on the4th with a daily total of 77.6 mm.

The rainfall from these three events ensured that itwas a wetter than usual March in all but the east.Dodges Ferry missed out on much of the rain andwas the state's driest site with just 18 mm for thewhole month. In contrast, Mount Read was thewettest site with 375 mm (though this total is likelyto be higher, due to snow being blown away onsome days). The next wettest site was Lake MargaretDam with 310 mm. Cape Grim had its wettest Marchon record with a total of 116 mm and a few othersites in the northwest had their wettest March for atleast 20 years.
