WATERFOWL MONITORING AT THE MAI PO

INNER DEEP BAY RAMSAR SITE

Waterfowl Count 23 April 2000

Summary Report

During the April 2000 waterfowl count, not all sites within the Ramsar Site were

covered. Mai Po San Tsuen and Shenzhen River A were not counted, and Tam

Kon Chau was only partially counted. In addition, the stretch of coast from Nim

Wan to Lau Fau Shan was also not counted; though this area lies outside the

Ramsar Site, it is usually counted in all months of the year.

A total of 8,049 waterbirds were recorded in the Deep Bay area, with 7,826 of

these being recorded in the Ramsar Site. Nearly 92% of birds (7,384 birds)

were waders, and only 7% were ardeids. This is almost certainly a reflection of

the fact that the fish pond areas, where many ardeids would have been, were

relatively less well-counted than Mai Po Nature Reserve, and probably should

not be taken as an accurate indication of the relative numbers of waterbirds

present.

The high total of waders reflects the fact that April is the month of peak wader

passage through Hong Kong, and this is the month when these birds always

form their largest percentage of the total present. The great majority were

recorded roosting on Mai Po Nature Reserve.

Small numbers of late-staying ducks, not yet departed north, were still present,

and nine Black-faced Spoonbills were recorded. Two late Black-headed Gulls

were also recorded.

WATERFOWL MONITORING AT THE MAI PO

INNER DEEP BAY RAMSAR SITE

Waterfowl Count 21 May 2000

Summary Report

The May 2000 waterfowl count occurred on 21st. Unfortunately, not all sites

within the Ramsar Site were covered, with Deep Bay C, D and E in Inner

Deep Bay not surveyed. In addition, the stretch of coast from Nim Wan to Lau

Fau Shan was also not counted; though this area lies outside the Ramsar

Site, it is usually counted in all months of the year.

A total of 2,206 waterbirds were recorded in the Deep Bay area, with 1,862 of

these being recorded in the Ramsar Site. The number of birds recorded in

Inner Deep Bay is usually low from April to October as the count is made at

high tide. Consequently, had these areas been counted, it is unlikely they

would have added signficantly to the total. Previous counts for Deep Bay in

May have been 3521 (3063 in the Ramsar Site) in 1998, and 3973 (3438 in

the Ramsar Site) in 1999. Consequently, even allowing for the slight

understimate of numbers present (which, incidentally occurred in 1998), it

would appear that the number of waterfowl in Deep Bay in May was lower

than in the recent two years.

The two largest groups at this time of year comprise ardeids and waders. A

comparison of these two groups with the Ramsar Site figures for 1998 and

1999 is contained in Table 1.

Table 1. Comparison of selected waterfowl count figures in the Ramsar Site

for May 1998-2000.

Sub-total 3003 98.1 3275 95.2 1696 91.2

It can be seen that in terms of both numbers and proportion of the overall

total of waterfowl, there is little clear-cut difference between the figures for

Page 10: Monthly Waterfowl Counts Data - HKBWS€¦ · Hong Kong Bird Watching Society Room 625, Beverley Commercial Building 87-105 Chatham Road, Tsim Sha Tsui Kowloon, Hong Kong Tel: (852)

this year and those for 1998 and 1999. Numbers in 2000 are obviously lower

than both previous years, but the extent for each group varies; with regard to

percentage of the overall total, the results for ardeids and waders are both

intermediate between those of 1998 and 1999.

The cause for the lower numbers this year may be very simple, and relate to

one or both of two factors, viz. i.) a significant number of ardeids were feeding

on a fish pond outside of the count area, ii.) the May 2000 count occurred

relatively late in the month allowing time for more waders to have departed on

their northward migration. A longer dataset would allow a better context in

which to examine these results.

Waterfowl Count 16 July 2000

Summary Report

The July 2000 waterfowl count occurred on 16th. All sites within the Ramsar

Site were covered, apart from Mai Po San Tsuen. Outside of the Ramsar Site,

the following areas were not counted: San Tin, Tin Shui Wai, Nam Sang Wai

and Chau Tau; the latter three are now much degraded or reduced in size.

A total of 1487 waterbirds were recorded in the Deep Bay area, of which 1173

occurred in the Ramsar Site. Table 1 provides a comparison of selected counts

for July in the years 1998-2000.

As usual in midsummer, ardeids comprise the bulk of waterbirds recorded in

the Ramsar Site. It can be seen that the proportion is lower this year than in

previous years; in addition, however, the number of ardeids is significantly

lower than during the past two years. The reason for this is unknown; it seems

possible that a number of birds were simply not in the Ramsar Site during the

count though the fact that Mai Po San Tsuen was not counted is unlikely to be

the sole explanation. It may simply be that ardeids were located in other

unsurveyed areas of Deep Bay.

As with other counts this summer, the number of waterbirds was similar to the

total for 1999, but lower than that for 1998.

Waterfowl Count 13 August 2000

Summary Report

The August 2000 waterfowl count occurred on 13th, and all sites within the

Ramsar Site were surveyed. Outside the Ramsar Site, Tin Shui Wai, Nam

Sang Wai and Chau Tau were not covered (the first and last of these are now

very restricted in terms of available habitat due to development), nor was San

Tin.

A total of 3178 waterbirds were recorded in the Deep Bay area, of which 2232

occurred in the Ramsar Site. Table 1 provides a comparison of selected counts

for the years 1998-2000.

From table 1 it can be seen that the total number of ardeids and waders

recorded was broadly in line with the figures for 1999, and that both were

somewhat lower than the equivalent figures for 1998. In terms of ardeids, such

a pattern over the three years was also evident for the month of May. It is not

known whether the number of ardeids in the past two years has been relatively

low, or whether the 1998 figures were relatively high.

Table 2 compares the counts of the most numerous ardeids in the Ramsar Site in August of

the last three years. The figures suggest that lower numbers of Little and Great Egrets are

largely responsible for the relatively low number of ardeids in 2000 compared with 1998.

Waterfowl Count 17 September 2000

Summary Report

The September 2000 waterfowl count occurred on 17th, and all sites within the

Ramsar Site were surveyed. Outside the Ramsar Site, Tin Shui Wai, Nam

Sang Wai and Chau Tau were not covered (the first and last of these are now

very restricted in terms of available habitat due to development), nor was San

Tin.

A total of 4945 waterbirds were recorded in the Deep Bay area, of which 3580

occurred in the Ramsar Site. Table 1 provides a comparison of selected counts

for September in the years 1998-2000.

Total 4498 95.6 2882 96.3 3175 88.6

Total of waterfowl 4705 2994 3580

From Table 1 it can be seen that the total number of waterfowl in the Ramsar

Site is slightly higher than was recorded in 1999, and somewhat lower than

that in 1998. This is broadly similar to the pattern noted during other waterfowl

counts this summer, and indicates that the data being collected is broadly

representative of actual waterbird numbers.

The only species count of interest is perhaps that of Grey Heron, of which 101

were recorded in the Deep Bay area. This is the highest count of this species

in September. With regard to the ardeid species that regularly breed in Hong

Kong, Table 2 compares totals for each with those of the past two years.

The three counts for September are very similar in terms of the total number of

ardeids, all lying between 900 and 952. Cattle Egret numbers are the lowest,

though as this is a migratory species, such variation is to be expected. Chinese

Pond Heron numbers are relatively the highest this year, a welcome

development, and one that it is hoped will continue, as numbers of this species

were relatively low during much of the 1990s.

WATERFOWL MONITORING AT THE MAI PO

INNER DEEP BAY RAMSAR SITE

Waterfowl Count 15 October 2000

Summary Report

The October 2000 waterbird count took place on the 15th. Coverage of the

Ramsar Site was complete apart from Mai Po San Tsuen. For the Deep Bay

area as a whole no other sites were not surveyed. However, it should be noted

that Tin Shui Wai, Nam Sang Wai and Chau Tau are no longer on the list of

sites to be surveyed due to habitat degradation and a lack of manpower. The

situation will be reviewed at intervals in the future to see if circumstances

warrant or allow covering these sites again.

A total of 13,097 waterbirds were recorded in the Deep Bay area (including Fu

Tian, which is now being regularly surveyed), of which 8183 were present in

the Ramsar Site. This monthly total is comparable with those since 1998 when

a survey was first carried out in October. The largest groups comprised ardeids

(5301 in the Deep Bay area), waders (4170) and ducks and grebes (3317).

This reflects the presence of migrant ducks and the first arrivals of the

wintering population, and a still healthy number of migrant waders.

Waterfowl Count 12 November 2000

Summary Report

The November 2000 waterbird count took place on the 12th, and coverage of

the Ramsar Site was complete. With regard to the Deep Bay area as a whole,

all other sites were surveyed apart from Nim Wan/Lau Fau Shan and San Tin.

A total of 29,553 waterbirds were recorded in the Deep Bay area (including Fu

Tian, which is now being regularly surveyed), of which 17,411 were present in

the Ramsar Site. Ducks and grebes easily formed the largest proportion of

birds, constituting over 40% of birds present in the bay. This reflects the arrival

of winter visitors.

INNER DEEP BAY RAMSAR SITE

Waterfowl Count 10 December 2000

Summary Report

The December 2000 waterbird count took place on the 10th, and coverage of

the Ramsar Site was complete. With regard to the Deep Bay area as a whole,

all other sites were surveyed apart from San Tin.

A total of 52,692 waterbirds were recorded in the Deep Bay area (including Fu

Tian, which is now being regularly surveyed), of which 36,750 were present in

the Ramsar Site. Ducks and grebes easily formed the largest proportion,

constituting over 40% of birds present in the bay. The total of ducks involved,

22,304, is a return to the high counts noted during the years of peak counts up

to and including the winter of 1995-96. It is reported that active controls on the

number of people accessing the intertidal mudflats on the Fu Tian side of the

bay has encouraged many more duck to roost and feed there than has been

the case for a number of years (Wang Yong Jun pers. comm.).

Gulls and terns comprised 24% of birds present, though Black-headed Gull

numbers remained somewhat down on the high noted in 1996. The next two

largest groups were waders at 14% and Great Cormorants at nearly 11%.

Waterfowl Count 14 January 2001

Summary Report

The January 2001 waterbird count took place on the 14th, and coverage of the

Ramsar Site and the Deep Bay area was complete (excluding Tin Shui Wai,

Nam Sang Wai and Chau Tau which are no longer counted).

A total of 54,268 waterbirds were recorded in the Deep Bay area (including Fu

Tian, which is now being regularly surveyed), of which 35,974 were present in

the Ramsar Site. Ducks and grebes formed the largest proportion, constituting

nearly 38% of birds present in the bay. The total of ducks involved, 23,040, is a

return to the high counts noted during the years of peak counts up to and

including 1996.

Gulls and terns comprised 25% of the total, and the number of Black-headed

Gulls recorded was 13,500, a slight increase on recent years. The number of

Great Cormorants present was 7100, approximately 1000 short of the highest

number on record in Hong Kong.

Waterfowl Count 11 February 2001

Summary Report

The February 2001 waterbird count took place on the 11th, and coverage of

the Ramsar Site was complete. Elsewhere, Nim Wan/Lau Fau Shan was not

counted.

A total of 35,434 waterbirds were recorded in the Deep Bay area (including Fu

Tian, which is now being regularly surveyed), of which 24,084 were present in

the Ramsar Site. The total count is somewhat down on previous February

totals, and it may be that the relatively mild winter with few cold surges later on

encouraged greater numbers than usual to depart early.

Ducks and grebes formed the largest proportion, constituting nearly 40% of

birds present in the bay. 26% of waterbirds were waders, 15% were gulls and

terns and 13% were ardeids.

Waterfowl Count 11 March 2001

Summary Report

The March 2001 waterbird count took place on the 11th, and coverage of the

Ramsar Site was complete. Elsewhere, Nim Wan/Lau Fau Shan and San Tin

were not counted.

A total of 22,796 waterbirds were recorded in the Deep Bay area (including Fu

Tian, which is now being regularly surveyed), of which 18,347 were present in

the Ramsar Site. The total count is broadly comparable with those obtained in

March in previous years.

By March a large number of waterbirds have departed their wintering grounds

in Deep Bay and headed north. Interestingly, although the February count was

relatively low, possibly due to mild winter weather, the figure for this month is

much as in previous years.

The largest two groups comprised approximately 28% and 25% of the total

number of waterbirds present, and these were ducks and grebes and waders

respectively.
