Annexure-I

Inflation in Brief

1. CPI inflation General increased by 3.9% on year-on-year basis in September 2016 as compared to an

increase of 3.6% in the previous month and 1.3% in September 2015. On month-on-month basis, it

increased by 0.2% in September 2016 as compared to a decrease of 0.3% in the previous month and a

decrease of 0.1% in September 2015.

2. Core inflation measured by non-food non-energy CPI (Core NFNE) increased by 4.8% on (YoY) basis in

September 2016 as compared to increase of 4.6% in the previous month and 3.4% in September 2015.

On (MoM) basis, it increased by 0.3% in September 2016 as compared to increase of 0.2% in previous

month and an increase of 0.1% in September 2015.

3. Core inflation, measured by 20% weighted trimmed mean CPI (Core Trimmed) increased by 3.7% on

(YoY) basis in September 2016 as compared to 3.5% in the previous month and by 2.8% in September

2015. On (MoM) basis, it increased by 0.1% in September 2016 as compared to an increase of 0.1% in

the previous month and 0.1% in September 2015.

4. SPI inflation on YoY increased by 1.8% in september 2016 as compared to an increase of 2.2% a month

earlier and decrease of 1.3 % in September 2015. On MoM basis, it increased by 0.1% in September

2016 as compared to an increase of 0.2% a month earlier and an increase of 0.5% in September, 2015.

5. WPI inflation on YoY basis increased by 3.4% in september 2016 as compared to an increase of 3.5% a

month earlier and a decrease of 3.5% in September 2015. WPI inflation on MoM basis decreased by

0.5% in September 2016 as compared to no change a month earlier and a decrease of 0.5% in

september 2015.

6. Figures 1 and 2 show graphically the data of Table 1. Table 1.1 shows “Period Average” and “YoY”

percent changes in indices of three years.

II. Consumer Price Index (CPI)

The Consumer Price Index of September 2016, has increased by 0.20% over August 2016 and increased by

3.88% over corresponding month of the last year i.e. September 2015.

Food Items Increased: Onion (12.73%), Eggs (5.39%), Fresh Vegetables (3.4%), Honey (1.38%),

Betel Leaves & Nuts (1.28%), Gur (1.26%), and Potatoes (1.19%).

Decreased: Tomatoes (4.91%), Chicken (3.99%), Pulse Mash (3.91%), Besan (3.61%), Dry Fruits

(1.55%), Pulse Moong (1.54%), Pulse Masoor (1.07%) and Beans (1.04%).

Non-food Items Increased: Medical equipments (2.56%), Education (2.38%), Drugs & Medicines

(1.72%), Doctor Fee (1.47%) and Tailoring (1.27%).

Decreased: Personal Equipments (1.07%) and Sewing needle & Dry Cell (1%).

2. Year-on-Year: Top few commodities which varied from previous year i.e. September 2015 are

given below:-

Food Items Increased: Gram Whole (45.33%), Pulse Gram (37.24%), Pulse Mash (34.58%), Besan

(31.54%), Potatoes (29.08%), Cigarettes (17.54%), Fresh Vegetables (13.06%), Betel Leaves and Nuts (11.78%), Tomatoes (10.34%), Sugar (10.22%), Pulse Masoor (7.32%) and Eggs (7.16%).

Decreased: Onion (38.47%), Rice (5.89%), Chicken (4.01%), Cooking Oil (3.06%), Pulse Moong

(2.56%), and Tea (2.51%). Non-food Items Increased: Education (10.19), Water Supply (8.94%), Tailoring (8.43%), Doctor

(MBBS) Clinic Fee (8.12%), Personal Equipments (8.01%), Medical Equipments (7.08%),Drgs & Medicines (6.7%), House Rent (5.79%), Household Servants (5.6%), Postal Service (5.57%), Construction Wage Rates (5.53%), Cleaning & Laundry (5.44%) and Woolen Readymade Garments (5.15%). Decreased: Motor Fuel (7.63%), Kerosene Oil (6.06%) and Motor Vehicle Accessories (5.8%).

III. Sensitive Price Indicator

Quintile-wise percentage changes YoY and MoM are given below in Table 3. The series from August 2015 to

September 2016 is also graphed below in Figure 3.

IV. Wholesale Price Index

The Wholesale Price Index for September, 2016 decreased by 0.53% over August, 2016. It increased by

3.38% over the corresponding month of the last year. YoY and MoM movements, from August, 2015 to September,

2016 are also graphed below in Figure 4.

Main contributors to month-on-month and year-on-year percentage changes are

given below and detail is given in Annexure B.

1. Month-on-month Top few commodities which varied from previous month i.e. August, 2016 are

given below:-

Increased: Stimulant & Spice Crops (24.19%), Furnace Oil (6.23%), Vegetables (3.35%),

Poultry (3.29%), Medicines (3.26%), Lathe Machine (3.18%), Eggs (3.12%), Dry Fruits

(2.39%) and Potatoes (2.04%).

Decreased: Fiber Crops (8.62%), Hides & Fur Skins (5.31%), Cotton Yarn (4.52%), Maize

(3.85%), Fresh Fruits (3.54%), Fish (3.40%) and Other Cereal Flour (3.02%).

2. Year-on-year Top few commodities which varied from previous year i.e. September, 2015 are given

below:-

Increased: Woolen Carpets (48.65%), Potatoes (48.61%), Other Cereal Flour (39.50%)

Fish (33.93%), Pulses (29.77%), Fiber Crops (26.71%), Other Glass Articles (22.76%),

Tobacco Products (22.05%), Oil cakes (19.29%), Cotton Yarn (16.21%), Medicines

(15.36%), Cotton Seeds (14.25%) and Unmanufactured Tobacco (12.43%).

Decreased: Coal (35.00%), Kerosene Oil (24.33%), Jowar (20.98%), Fertilizers (18.39%),

Stimulant & Spice Crops (18.11%), Diesel Oil (15.15%) and Motor spirit (12.88%)
