This August, we have been parti-
cipating of the Chinese Robotics Challen-
ge, held in China. And there we were
pleased to be finalists of this great and
fascinating competition. The event that
happened in Shenzhen, one of the lar-
gest and most important cities of the
country, located north of Hong Kong,
brought together the best teams from
China, United States and Australia. In
addition to our team which was chosen
to represent Latin America.
With much effort, our team has
excelled and got one of the best awards
that the team has ever won: the title of
vice-champion. That brought to us much
more than an physical achievement but
also showed us that it was possible to
carry out the project our students deve-

loped with the help of our partners and run it
in the best way we could.
The event that was organized by the
China Urban Youth Robotics Alliance (CUYRA)
- a non-profit organization established in
Hong Kong, which strives to promote the
teaching of science, engineering and
technology - was the same style and mo-
del of competition we participate earlier
this year, 2015, organized by the FIRST
Robotics Competition. Following the
principles of the game Recycle Rush, the
Chinese competition has only a few
changes in its rules; the main goal of the
game is still the same: stacking totes
and bins on top of a platform: the more
stacked totes, the higher score.
The competition was very exciting
and at the end of it we had the opportu-
nity to have as one of our partners one
of the best Australian teams which is co-
ordinated by our mentors Jeser Becker
and Daiane Rodrigues. Together, we join
forces and talents to win our great title.

This month we had the
opportunity to lecture to students
from all grades at School Heitor
Villa-Lobos in Gravataí-Brazil. We
present our team’s project and
also invite new students to join us.
That was a great experience of
intense days of learning.

ted of the workshop, in which we

Workshop for kids in a Brazilian
public school
For the younger ones we showed our robot and we let them play with it. They loved
and they were really curious about how to join the team.
We would like to thank one of our great partners in this journey: School Heitor Villa-

apply a very dynamic challenging for the kids. We divided the kids into two groups, with
the task of building a tower as taller as possible using only paper & tape. But without
them knowing at first that it was a “competition”, because the main objective of the task
was develop their teamwork skills, which is a major feature of our team.

Most of the students who participated in our
project are studying in college
We know that today the
number of young Brazilians stu-
dents who are joining an under
graduation degree has grown; ho-
wever, starting college is still a gre-
at challenge for kids from public
schools. Because of it, team 1772
helps its team members to prepare
to the application tests.
Every year, our mentors
meet with the team students who
are able to apply to college through
“vestibular” – the Brazilian test to
select freshman to colleges - and
talk to them about options for un-
dergraduate courses and they also
talk about the labor market related
to these courses; we discuss what
are the best ways for these youths
to be selected by the main state
universities, whether public or priva-
te. Then, we follow these students
in all selection stages of the colleges
until the day of registration. Curren-
tly, dozens of young people who
participated in the team during the
three years of high school were
selected to attend the under gra-
duation in the following public and
private universities with integral
studies or semi-full scholarships:
UFRGS – UFSC – UFSM – UFPEL –
UFOP – UFPR – UERGS – PUCRS –
UNISINOS – ULBRA – UNILASALLE
– UCS – SENAI – QI e UNIVALE.
These kids represent a number
greater than 80% of staff mem-
bers who were eligible to enroll in
this level of education.

All students that had participated in some stage of the UsFIRST competition are apt to educational scholarships abroad. For more information visit: http://www.usfirst.org/aboutus/scholarships Students of the team who are in high school have also been privile-ged with scholarships for the training of young people in large institutions of the country, for example, the “Fundação Estudar” that awarded two te-am members with scholarships in the “Jovens For a de Série” program. We also have students who received scholarships for technical courses in institutions such as SENAI and SENAC.

FRC combines the excitement of sport
with the rigors of science and technology.
Under strict rules, limited resources, and
time limits, teams of 25 students or more
are challenged to raise funds, design a
