You can see artwork in anything, especially if you’re as creative as theyoung patients in the Children’s Cancer Hospital at M. D. AndersonCancer Center. Last year, eight pediatric artists created an old-timey

gingerbread house complete with candy canes, peppermints, colorful gum-drops and other sweet treats, gooey icing and, of course, gingerbread.

When these youngsters gathered for their regular art class as part of thein-hospital school curriculum, they discovered all the materials necessary toput the house together. Armed with architectural advice from their art teacher, they built a colorful mansion (and somehow managed not to eat it!).

One look at this design masterpiece and the Children’s Art Project knewthey had a winner. The house was photographed from every angle andhas reappeared for this year’s holiday season as a spectacular cookiejar, a charming ornament and an especially sweet greeting card.

While the young patients were building their gingerbread house, they went a step further and built friendships. The art class is adiversion from the daily tedium of a hospital stay, and theimaginations and creativity of the children become rapidly visible.

Another special aspect about the art classes is that they are the beginningof what the Children’s Art Project is all about. They are creativelearning experiences for the children – and the foundation for allproducts sold by the project. Using every material imaginable, these talented patients create beautiful art that is eventuallytransformed into greeting cards and gifts. The products aresold and proceeds return to fund many M. D. Andersonprograms – from the in-hospital school and collegescholarships to summer camps and exciting parties andoutings, the young artists can take pleasure in doing whatthe Children’s Art Project is all about – making life betterfor children with cancer.

Fadila Farag is a great sugar and spice architect! Concentrating on details, she workedcarefully to place each tiny candy in the right spot on the gingerbread house. While sheworked, she was able to escape her life as a cancer patient and all the stressful, sometimespainful, things that go with the diagnosis.

Fadila, at 10, is also a young entrepreneur with a big heart. For two years she has hosted a lemonade stand in honor and memory of the friends she has made at the Children’sCancer Hospital at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. She has raised thousands of dollarsin the past two years for childhood cancer research.

Why is she wearing a mask with her pink dress? Pink is Fadila’s favorite color, but themask is there for protection. It’s not to protect others from something that Fadila has(cancer is not contagious), but to protect her from other’s germs. The treatment of canceroften weakens a patient’s immune system, and Fadila’s mask is her line of defense. Somepatients must be in isolation for specific periods — for instance, after a bone marrowtransplant — to protect them from bacteria and viruses that would not harm a healthyperson. Others, like Fadila, must be careful wherever they go to protect their immunity.

Fadila is a native of Egypt, so her treatment for acute lymphocytic leukemia at theChildren’s Cancer Hospital at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, hasbeen a cultural experience for Fadila and her family. She has taken advantage of the in-hospital classroom to keep up with her studies, while her mother has worked withphysicians, nurses, child life specialists, social workers, advocates and others to make sureher daughter has great cancer treatment with support for the whole family. Meanwhile,Fadila has enjoyed summer camp, art classes and several Child Life programs, including many field trips. All these programs — and more — are funded byyour purchases from this catalog. And Fadila and all the pediatric patients at the Children’s Cancer Hospital aregrateful for your help!

Romika Smith bubbles with energy despite the fact that she is in her second year oftreatment for Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL). That treatment is never fun, but Romika has managed to find many positive things at the Children’s CancerHospital. It was rough at first, she says, but she got used to the routine and met lots of people. She loved the in-hospital school and especially the great teachers. And of course, there was art class. Romika is part of the team that created the GingerbreadHouse. Her intense concentration as she worked on the project is evident in photos.Whether applying icing or sprinkling sugar on the finished product, it was fun to be asugar and spice architect!

Romika has experienced other programs funded by the Children’s Art Project, including Camp Star Trails and Camp A. O. K. The best part is meeting other kidswith cancer who understand what she is going through. She has moved on to a publicschool for her eighth grade year. English, reading and science are her favorite subjects. When she’s not in school, the series of Cheetah Girls books are favorites. She alsoloves to talk on the phone with her friends, shop, go places and stay busy.

And is Romika planning for a career? She is still thinking, but being a medicalexaminer is very interesting to her. Her mother says one of the most important things Romika has learned from cancer is to make goals in life and to know that great things are possible for her.
