Observa ons from the Deck… by Pastor Tom Grevlos 

“Talitha kuom…Li le girl, get up!” Jesus. Mark 5:41 There are more references to the healing ministry of Jesus recorded in the gospels than teaching or preaching! Apparently, “Physician, heal thyself!” was not a bumper s cker Jesus embodied. Jesus knew then and s ll knows how much a healing presence is desired in peoples’ lives. Whether the healing is physical, mental, or emo onal—the gi  of the healing of spirit is desperately needed.  In last month’s newsle er I spoke of Jesus as the prescrip on for a healthy life. This month, I will reflect on the signs of a healthy community of faith.  

SIGNS OF CHURCH HEALTH: The Spirit Moving and at Work in Open Hearts!  

*Moving from cynicism to hope! Cynicism is revealed by the fruit of nega vity—with rot‐‐ea ng away at joy. Easter hope rolls away the tombstone of cynicism and produces the good fruit of life‐giving love for others.  

*Moving from scarcity to abundance! Scarcity is o en a by‐product of fear. It is no accident that the biblical passages most o en recorded in scripture are “fear not” and “do not be afraid.” We read these in both testaments. Generosity stemming from a sense of abundance is rooted in trust and gra tude with God as our source of all blessings! Truly, a thankful heart is always lived out through a generous heart.  

*Moving from being stuck in place to dancing! Rabbi Hillel says, “I get up, I fall down; I get up, I fall down; I get up, I fall down; meanwhile…I keep dancing!” In the Gospel of Mark, Jesus said to the li le girl whose body was s ll and lifeless, “Get up!” Jesus calls us to do the same…always! As individuals and as a church—to move from a myopic view to the energy of dancing as the Spirit moves us to the beat.  

*Moving from cocoon to bu erfly! A symbol for the Risen Christ is a bu erfly. How fi ng! A faith community that emerges from the death of the “old self” invigorated by looking outward grows wings to carry the message beyond our walls. “Get up…also becomes…Get out!”  The past year at Shepherd of the Hills has been one of both excitement and challenge. The learning curve for your new staff has been steep, but frui ul. The cri cal ministry for both families and youth has been undergoing a metamorphosis. Though ul and persistent work has been underway to discern GOD’S direc on for God’s church through the visioning process.  Amidst the distrac ons of this re‐building process, I see signs of re‐birth and new beginnings. The power of the cross and the empty tomb, the Spirit of the Risen Jesus will embolden our witness! Though we are not perfect…the healing grace of Jesus moves us, invites us, compels us…to keep dancing!  Thanks be to God—and to each one of you!  Pastor Tom

Hello SOTH! I am extremely excited to announce that I have been selected as the President for UNC's Lutheran Campus Ministry for the 2014‐2015 school year. I will serve on a Leadership Team with 12 other LCM students as we keep our student organiza on running smoothly, plan and execute social events, 

service projects and mission trips, and provide our peers with a welcoming, nourishing faith community. As President, my du es include overseeing this team with the guidance of Pastor Mark Coulter, our Campus Ministry and Parish Pastor, as well as serving on the church council of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church as the voice for LCM. HTLC and LCM have been my home away from home during my college career and I am honored to have the opportunity to show my gra tude to their ministries through this posi on. And of course, I greatly appreciate the strong and con nued support from SOTH. Thank you for providing me with the firm founda on upon which I have built my faith. I would not be involved in

Dear Friends in Christ/Partners in Ministry, From Palm Sunday through Easter,  we had nearly 1500 people par cipate in all the Holy Week experiences. We thank you for your par cipa on and pray that the Easter flame may burn bright and become the fire of the Spirit in your life and in this faith community.  I want to especially express gra tude to all who par cipated in ways that made the Holy Week experience so powerful. From those who helped “behind the scenes”, such as, preparing all the worship bulle ns, se ng up for communion, serving the Easter breakfast, etc. to those who were a bit more visible, such as our musicians, scripture readers, ushers and communion assistants, etc., it is truly a team effort! Lastly, a special shout out to your church staff who worked  relessly in making this week special. They have wonderful servant hearts.  Easter Peace, Joy, Hope, and Love, Pr. Tom Grevlos

and/or where did you grow up?

Favorite job… My favorite job was with British Airways at the Philadelphia International Airport.  I met so many interesting people from all over the world.  My cousin has my dream job. She is a dolphin trainer at Brookfield Zoo. 

I have a twin brother named Mark.  I’ve been married to my husband, also named Mark, for almost 30 years.  We have two daughters: Jenna and Jackie. 

Tell us something about your family.

My favorite bible verse is Isaiah 9:6. “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”  One of my favorite hymns is “I Was There to Hear Your Borning Cry” but it usually makes me cry.

Benevolence Lent and Easter Special Offerings – These offerings will share $3,000 with Charis, A Ministry of Grace in Hai  to provide French Creole language Bibles, $5,000 to Lutheran Campus Ministry at UT and $750 for the SOTH Quilt Group for supplies.  Any contribu ons above $8,750 will be given to the general fund at Lutheran World Relief.  Watch for the final totals in the Weekly Enews.   

Good news from the American Church in Berlin, Germany In 2013, SOTH provided a gi  of $5,000 to assist with the $150,000 projected cost to replace an outdated, inefficient hea ng system in the church which kept some people away from worship due to the cold, damp building.  Two gas burner and heat exchange units replaced the more than 20 year old oil burner units and a new chimney was required to carry out water vapor.  All of this new equipment freed up some storage space,  has provided new warmth and comfort to worshipers and helped to reduce the u lity expense.  In January, 2014 the new system became opera onal.  Praise God – it’s finally warm inside the building as well as inside the hearts of the congrega on!  Thank you.  

New Life Children’s Center Contribu ons for 2014  Due to your generous contribu ons to date, we have been able to meet our $3,000 commitment to New Life Children’s Center for 2014 and it is being matched with an addi onal $3,000 through Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest campaign.  What a wonderful blessing this is to provide these addi onal funds for an organiza on that makes such a difference in the lives of many young girls who have experienced abuse and neglect.  We also received many items during our March dona on drive for the New Life Point Store where the girls can use their points earned from good behavior during the classroom and dorm life to buy themselves a special treat.  Your contribu ons con nue to provide blessings for many!   

  

SafePlace’s mission is to end sexual and domes c violence through safety, healing, preven on and social change.  SafePlace was created through the merger of the Aus n Rape Crisis Center and the Center for Ba ered Women in 1998.  Both predecessor agencies were established in the mid‐1970’s and were the first of their kind in Texas and among the first in the na on.  For 38 years, SafePlace has been the leading provider in Aus n/Travis County of comprehensive services to women, children and men hurt by sexual and domes c violence.   SafePlace is located at 1515 Grove Blvd, Aus n or call: 512‐267‐7233  Safety:  They provide a 24‐hour crisis hotline, a 105 bed Kelly White Family Shelter for adult domes c violence survivors and their children, support for recent rape survivors at local hospitals and for survivors of violence seeking jus ce and protec on via the legal system.  They also include an on‐site child care center and a K‐12 school for youth living in the shelter and at the Aus n Children’s Shelter.  

Healing:  48 apartments for transi onal housing, case management and Life Skills classes are offered among other services.  

Preven on:  To prevent violence and promote safe and healthy rela onships, SafePlace provides outreach, educa on, training and preven on services to the community.  

Social change:  They advance alterna ves to the a tudes, behaviors and policies that perpetuate the acceptance of interpersonal violence, especially violence against women.    In 2011, SafePlace provided direct services to 5,479 people, educated and trained 46,424 community members and answered 15,711 hotline calls.  They are na onally recognized for their award winning, innova ve model programs.  

Each year, SOTH dedicates the month of May to assist SafePlace with a collec on of their most needed items. Stop by the display table for a copy of the “Hot List” and pick up a brochure for anyone you know who may need their services.  You are also encouraged to tour their facili es or ask about becoming a volunteer in many capaci es.

Finance Focus

THANK YOU!  135 Quilts are being shipped to Lutheran World Relief thanks to all the hard work of the quil ng angels during the past year.  A big thank you to everyone who helped prepare the quilts for shipping.  A special thanks to Dale Peterson for helping deliver the quilts to Immanuel Lutheran Church in Pflugerville.

First Communion Reflection—A Gift of Grace—A Grace Garden Do this to remember me. Luke 22:19 Back there in the beginning, we all fell in a garden. And Christ, He falls to the ground in the garden of Gethsemane and begins to right our fall. So the children put their hands in some dirt, and created a grace garden that helped us remember the path Christ walked for each one of us. 15 children and their parents attended our first communion workshop which helped us remember the story of Jesus as our Savior. The grace garden also reminded us that faith is alive and also meant to grow. How do we take care of our faith?—was our final question. Much the way we take care of a garden…with tending to its purpose by watering, feeding, and giving it attention.

What a great semester this has been! Consistent WEEKLY a endance by MANY families—moms and dads included! Some new faces, too! Connec ons…to God and to each other has been our focus. It is hard to have a vibrant life of faith without those two working synergis cally. Three units have been experienced: Prayer—all about rela onship! Conversa on and spending  me with one another, including God—leads to rela onship! 

Worship—all about giving God worth! We give worth to what we feel is important—and that is where we spend our  me. People can “worship” anything—worshiping God puts God at the center of family life which creates stability and iden ty. If we don’t stand for something—we can fall for anything! 

Bible Reading—all about ge ng God’s Word inside us! We “ate” it—literally! Ezekiel ate the scrolls and Paul talks about leaving “milk” behind and chewing on solid food in regards to God’s word. Jesus grows BIG hearts, and wants our hearts to be good soil for plan ng seeds of the kingdom. How do we get God’s word inside us? God’s word becomes transforma ve through repe on, experiencing the same story through a variety of disciplines, and conversa on. We also learned about God’s heart through the Prodigal Son story complete with a party! 

Serving—all about ac on! A er we pray, worship, and read scripture—we can’t HELP but serve! The month of May promises to be fun, ac ve, and par cipatory as we learn that service involves me, sacrifice, ac on, and blessing. 

Building a founda on of fellowship, consistency, connec on, and belonging has been our goal. In a small way, Camp Seeking Orange has sought to mimic the early church in the book of Acts—ea ng, learning, praying, serving, and playing (fellowship) together. TIME over TIME—every week ma ers—has been our mantra. Why? Because that’s how God created us to grow…over  me…to proclaim God’s message of grace and healing to a hur ng world….together.

Some of you might know that I am a glassblower by cra  training and therefore, I o en refer to terminology from the glass shop in my ministry. Halfway through the produc on of a piece of blown glass, the object is transferred to a new rod using a “ponte” which means bridge in Italian. The ponte is a point of hot glass which “glues” the glass object to the new rod. The glass ponte bridges the gap between the glass object and the new rod. Throughout history, the Italians have understood the importance of bridges – an understanding that I grapple with as I consider the bridges that are necessary for our eighth graders as they are confirmed on May 18th and our gradua ng seniors whom we will recognize June 1st.   

Once, a er working on a glass piece for many hours with a crew of assistants, we transferred the work with a ponte. Then, a er working another half hour, the piece suddenly popped off the ponte, bounced once and sha ered. I had neglected the bridge that was the founda on for the piece and the connec on to all the hands that were helping shape the work.   Have we neglected the bridges that our youth and young adults will need during their transfer process?  Much like the first few minutes a ached to the new ponte rod, the freshman years of high school and college are turbulent  mes. The bridge has not yet solidified onto the founda on. As the adults that both support and shape the youth of our ministry, we must be most a en ve and focused on the forma on of the bridges that will connect our youth to the high school and college faith communi es. When a new bridge was finished in Italy, the celebra on that followed 

was as much for the work that had been done as for how the bridge would con nue to grow. The Ponte Vecchio in Florence might have started as a simple way across the Arno River, but it has grown into the founda on for the gold market in the city.  If the founda on of a bridge is solid, the poten al for growth will always be present. A founda on has been set for our youth but help is needed to build bridges for them. For the eighth graders, I need help building the connec on to the high school youth ministry. For the gradua ng seniors, I need help shaping the pontes that will connect them to the campus ministries and faith communi es of the colleges that they will be a ending. Like in the glass shop, these points of contact will start out very fluid, but with a li le a en on will solidify and become the founda ons that will keep our young adults connected to the hands of our creator. ~Peace, Nick

Ponte Vecchio in Italy, oldest bridge in Florence

A metal rod used for fashioning hot glass.   Ponte is the Italian term which also means bridge.   A punty or ponte is used  by a glassblower to shape a point of hot glass on the new rod and used to glue the object to the rod  and serves like a bridge.  If proper attention is not paid in this process, the object can be damaged.

Yes! Yes! Yes! We all want a vibrant youth program! 

But like anything that grows strong over  me, seed plan ng starts long before we yield a harvest. With the academic, athle c, and musical demands on our youth—the opportunity for connec ng to each other and to Christ must begin at an early age. The harvest of healthy 

rela onships then carries the kids INTO middle and high school—only to deepen because of a good root system. That’s why CAMP is so important. Camp offers an immersion…everyday…24/7 experience with other kids! Connec ons happen without manufacturing those connec ons…like seeds…something organic takes place. So—lead the way, parents! Start plan ng now! Quite frankly—you’re the only ones that can help set up a garden for growth here at Shepherd of the Hills for our children. At the end of the day—it’s not so much about what the kids want…but what you want for not only your children, but what you need for your teenagers. Responsibility? Yes! But opportunity awaits…take a leap of faith and partner with God in crea ng your child’s spiritual future.

In this Easter season we con nue to embrace the spiritual disciplines learned in our Lenten study, Stuck, and work to become be er followers of Jesus by studying the Apostle Peter, disciple, friend of Jesus, and early leader of the church.     Simon Peter was a follower like us‐‐he wanted to be like Jesus, but he struggled with doubts and fears. At  mes, he failed miserably. At other  mes, he was used powerfully by God. This Bible study from the Life Guide series on the great apostle's life, challenges and mo vates us to con nue to grow in 

Christlikeness.  All are welcome!  Join us in the Youth Room upstairs from 11 am to 12:30 pm on Thursdays for caring prayer concerns, though ul study discussion and engaging, lively conversa on.  

 

Middle and High School Youth (MS Youth must bring a parent along) A worship service in canoes on Lady Bird Lake.   

The Group will canoe up‐stream,  e the boats together and have a worship service on the water as the current 

carries the group back to the launch site.
