Twelve Extraordinary Women: How God Shaped

Women of the Bible and What He Wants to Do with

You, by John D. MacArthur.

This is a fascinating account of the lives of some of

the more prominent women in Scripture, including

Eve, Sarah, Rahab, Hannah, Ruth, Mary (the moth-

er of Jesus, Anna, the Samaritan woman, Martha

and Mary (sisters of Lazarus), Mary Magdalene,

and Lydia.

Join us for coffee, Bible Study, and great discussion

each week.

Our Stephen Minister trainees have just finished Module 10 of their training series, which means they are half-way through their training regimen. During the month of

March, Stephen Minister Trainees will have studied about assertiveness, maintaining boundaries in caregiving, crisis theory and practice (danger vs. opportunity), confiden-

tiality, and “telecare” – the next best thing to being there. They continue to focus on the Caregiver’s Compass, which clearly defines who and what a Stephen Minister is.

We continue to appreciate the prayers and encouragement we have received from our congregation. We ask that you continue to pray for your Stephen Leaders and Stephen

Minister Trainees as we go forward on our journey. Stephen Ministers are anchored to the Cross of Jesus Christ, and the healing that they will bring others when their train-

ing is completed is not their own, but the healing that flows from Jesus’ broken body on the cross.

If you are interested in becoming a Stephen Minister, or if you know someone who is in need of a Stephen Minister, please contact us. We will begin accepting referrals of those in our congre-

gation who are in need of a Stephen Minister in mid-April, and our first caregiving by Stephen Ministers will begin in late June. Any questions you may have about Stephen Ministries may be

directed to Carolyn Mick at the Stephen Ministries office at 358-3350, or 319-1977, or you may e-mail us at [email protected].

Notes

The Corpus Christi District is preparing sewing kits for the Mission Action project at the 2013 Mission U in July at Mount Wesley in Kerrville. These will be presented to Pastor Willy Berman for his Manos Juntas Mexico. There is a basket in the Welcome Center for completed kits. For more information con-tact Camilla Palmer (358 - 1625).

It’s time to begin your 2013 UMW Reading Program. Four new books have been added to the UMW Library shelves in Fellowship Hall; two are large-print editions. Remember that you must read one book from each of the 5 categories. Only books from the 2009 – 2013 Reading Lists will count. Five of our members will receive the 2012 Level 1 Reading Certificate. Let’s plan to double that to at least 10 women for 2013. Call Jonnie Jordan (358-1915) for more information.

First United Methodist Church Beeville

Goals for 2013 Primary Focus on the Five Practices of a Fruitful Congregation

Radical Hospitality – We will strive to continue and strengthen the minis-tries already in place at FUMC. These include 1. The Table Fellowship on the 3

rd Saturday of every month

2. WOW (Worship on Wednesdays) 3. The annual Fall Festival, open to the community 4. The annual Pumpkin Patch, open to the community including schools

and other church groups

Passionate Worship – We will focus ourselves toward reaching the un-churched and the de-churched through relevant worship and work toward a 20% increase in worship attendance in both Sunday morning services.

Intentional Faith Development – We will move toward the creation of new small groups with specific target populations (for example, reaching peo-ple with full time jobs and busy lives through the use of the Right Now in-ternet study series for a more efficient delivery). We are also developing a comprehensive discipleship model with a goal to involve 50% of our mem-bers in small group study.

Risk-Taking Mission Service – We would like to see 10% of our members involved in mission activities outside the physical walls of FUMC (Mission Trips for example), and 25% involved in “in-house” Mission Projects.

Extravagant Generosity – We will examine the Missions Budget of FUMC to ultimately approach 20% in giving outside of the church.

Mission Statement:

First United Methodist Church will fulfill the mission of the Church by expressing God’s love in Jesus Christ through effective, Bible based ministries of worship,

education, service and fellowship that will meet the spiritual needs of God’s peo-ple in our church and community. We will share the joy of our faith and raise the

expectations of each other as disciples of Christ.

We have found ourselves in the 21st Century in America.

The time we live in marks extreme change. Most of us have devices in our pocket that give us access to

countless amounts of information. (Although most of us use it to help angry birds kill pigs or play a hip

version of scrabble.) We have become a people that cares so much about the self. In a weird auto-immune

way we have created a vacuum of community by subcultures and social media, that leave us more alone

than comforted.

I do not know why but we, as a people, in our time have re-written history to paint some sort of picture of

God in the past, as if now we are past him. We find that religion supported slavery instead of fought

against it. (Both existed but I may suggest one had a religious motive and the other another.) We also look

back a Christian community that passionately limited women’s rights, but our scripture and the teaching of

Jesus were truly groundbreaking in the way of women equality for their time. John Wesley ordained wom-

en to preach in 1761!

God is not back there, he is pulling us forward, preparing us for his Kingdom. Like the Lord’s Prayer, let

his will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.

Sometimes we think being vague somehow relates to “truth” and “bigness”. Jesus is how I understand

God. I realize that for some people, hearing Jesus shrinks the discussion about God, but my experience has

been the exact opposite. My experiences of Jesus has opened my mind and my heart to a bigger, wider,

more expansive and mysterious and loving God who I believe is actually up to something in the world. Let

us be apart of it.

We celebrate the resurrection this time of the year, and although we mention we believe in the resurrection

every Sunday in the Apostle’s Creed, I have noticed many Christians who reject this. They have replaced

the resurrection with an idea of escape and going to Heaven. As Paul says in his letter to the church of

Corinth: “For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. And if Christ has not been

raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are

lost.”

Seasons for Wholeness message for April 2013

“I am in pain and distress; may your salvation, O God, Protect me.” Psalm 69:29

Allergies occur when your immune system reacts to a foreign substance such as pollen, bee venom, or pet dander. Your immune system produces substances known as antibodies. Some of these antibodies

protect you from unwanted invaders that could make you sick or cause an infection. When you have allergies, your immune system makes antibodies that identify a particular allergen as something harmful,

even though it is not. When you come into contact with the allergen , you immune system’s reaction can inflame you skin, sinuses, airways, or digestive system.

Allergies are unusual, irritating, and potentially dangerous reactions of the immune system to a normally harmless substance. These reactions occur in about one out of every three people. They will attack the respiratory tract, digestive tract, or

entire body, but the type and severity of the reaction will depend on the individual’s level of sensitivity to the offending substance. Studies show that allergic tendencies may be inherited. If neither parent has allergies, a child has about 15%

chance of developing them… the chances increase to 30-50% if one parent has allergies and to 60-75% if both parents have allergies.

There are three categories of allergic reactions. Mild reactions are localized and include a rash, watery or itchy eyes, and congestion. Moderate reactions can spread beyond the original site of irritation and cause severe itching and difficulty

breathing. The worst reaction, anaphylaxis, affects the whole body and is rare but life-threatening. Within minutes severe swelling will make breathing and swallowing difficult, and may include abdominal pain, vomiting, and mental confu-

sion. For a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) call 911 or your local emergency number to seek emergency help. Persons severely allergic to bees, shellfish, or peanuts should carry a dose of epinephrine to quickly revere this

reaction. Evaluation, diagnosis and long-term management of anaphylaxis are complicated, so you will probably need to see a doctor that specializes in allergies and immunology.

“The wind blows south, and then turns north. Around and around it goes, blowing in circles.” Ecclesiastes 1:6

People allergic to substances in the environment will experience more problems at specific times of the year. Their symptoms will be worse during times of high winds when offending pollens are spread about. Late mornings or early after-

noons have high pollens counts which will cause more discomfort. The heavy air from high temperatures and humidity will trigger an asthmatic’s allergies. Triggers for allergic reactions must be avoided. Triggers can be environmental (wind,

pollen, poison ivy, pollution), chemical (perfume, smoke, cleaning materials, latex rubber, medications, or foods (shellfish, peanuts, wheat, milk, soy, strawberries, eggs). In addition, do not overlook items from the surroundings like animals,

mold, bee stings, or dust.

“The churning inside me never stops: days of suffering confront me.” Job 30:27

At least 30% of adult asthma cases are triggered by allergies. People allergic to cats are an increased risk for developing adult onset asthma. About 50% of older adults who have asthma are allergic. It is possible to first develop asthma at age

50, 60, or even later in life. Hormonal fluctuations and changes in women may play a role in adult onset asthma. An ongoing Harvard Nurses’ Health Study found than women who take estrogen supplements after menopause for ten years or

more are 50% more likely to develop asthma than women who never used estrogen. Different illnesses, viruses or infections can be a factor in adult onset asthma. Many adults first experience asthma symptoms after a bad cold or a bout with

the flu. Adult onset asthma is not caused by smoking. However, if you smoke or are exposed to cigarette smoke (secondhand smoke), it may provoke asthma symptoms.

What are signs and symptoms of adult onset asthma? (From the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America)

∙Dry cough, especially at night or in response to specific triggers

∙Tightness or pressure in the chest

∙Difficulty breathing

∙Wheezing- a whistling sound-when exhaling

∙Shortness of breath after exercise

∙Colds that go to the chest or “hang on” for 10 days or more

Asthma symptoms can mimic other illnesses diseases-especially in older adults. Hiatal hernia, stomach problems, or rheumatoid arthritis can create asthma-like symptoms. Chronic Obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has

many of the same symptoms as asthma. To diagnose asthma, your physician will ask you questions about your symptoms do a physical exam and conduct lung function testing. In addition, you may be tested for allergies. If you

have symptoms, do not ignore them or try to treat them yourself. Get a definitive diagnosis from your primary health provider.

“Then the LORD replied: “Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it.” Habakkuk 2:2

To diagnose an allergy, first keep a diary; note what foods were eaten, animals or plants that were near or touched, or any activity that night have triggered a reaction. When a reaction occurs, look for a link between the symptom

and a prior activity. If none are found, physicians may order blood and skin testing to determine the allergen. The skin tests can be uncomfortable but will help determine the allergen. Allergies can’t be cured but once diagnosed,

treatment can begin and symptoms relieved.

Stacey Fiegel

Dear Church Family,

I would like to take a moment to not only thank you for your overwhelming

hospitality and love that has been and (continues to be!) shown to myself and

my children when we started coming to FUMC last Spring, but also for your

inclusiveness. I am honored and blessed to have been offered the job of Direc-

tor of Children’s Ministry and I joyfully accepted!

I would like to share with you a few of my thoughts, prayer requests and goals

for the children and volunteers at our beloved church. First, and foremost, I

would like to recognize the Christian Education Team, namely, Shambryn Hu-

ie, Terri Sparks, Susan Lamb, Melissa Hughes, Monica Thomas, Candy and Todd Fuller, Liz Hoskins, Trish

Martin, Jan Kern and others who stepped up to the plate and did an amazing job during the last 18 months. I

would encourage you to give them a hug and a “thank you” when you next see them. With their unwavering

dedication and vision, they implemented and grew our W.O.W. program to almost 80 people!!!! The vast

majority of the children joining us on Wednesday nights are not members of our church, which brings me to

the next point. WE NEED VOLUNTEERS! The church, runs on our dedicated volunteers, that being said, I

am asking you now, and will be actively seeking you out– to volunteer as a food preparer for our meals, a

Bible Study leader for any age group, Sunday School teachers or substitutes. These volunteers have gone

above and beyond, and I would like to give them some time to recharge. They are by no means being dis-

missed, I am simply hoping to give them some time, and some options. To choose to continue in their posi-

tions, or change or step down. This church is run on volunteers, and it is a beautiful ministry for others to

see. When we baptize these children that we are teaching, and when these adults join our church, we, as a

congregation are asked if we will support and encourage them in their relationship with Christ. ALL OF US

ARE RESPONSIBLE. Not just the Christian Education Team, or the paid staff, or the parents of that child.

We have a chance to have a huge impact on this town, the discipleship opportunities are out there!

I have many ideas and plans to grow this ministry, but it will only happen with your prayers, you blessing

and your HELP! As of Fall 2013, when W.O.W. starts up again, we will have a sign up list to cook a meal

per week, like the Table is run. Please consider that. Also, I will be asking for volunteers for our Vacation

Bible School which will be this summer, June 16-20, we will need as many volunteers as possible. VBS

planning committee will be meeting soon. Please email me if you are interested. We will also be starting a

Children’s Choir (starting in Fall 2013), a Children’s Community Helper Group (children will be asked to

apply –like National Junior Honor Society- and be present at the Food Distribution, The Table, spend some

time helping at the Vineyard and various other outreach programs we are involved in.

On a personal note, I appreciate each of you. Your support of me, as a mother of FIVE and a newlywed

brings tears to my eyes. I have never felt this accepted and loved in a church family, and it is a divine gift to

me.

God bless you all,

My email is [email protected]. Phone is 361-318-5343.
