NATIONAL RESOURCE CENTER
For ASIAN LANGUAGES
Murdy Elementary school began its Vietnamese-English
dual language program this year for two Transitional Kin-
dergarten classes. One of the teachers teaching in Viet-
namese has been teaching in the public school system for
more than 20 years. Murdy’s student population is approxi-
mately 70% Vietnamese.
In 2013, the seeds of the program were planted when the
Board of Education requested a feasibility study regarding
the expansion of the district’s heritage language programs
to be conducted by the California Association of Bilingual
Education.
Lân Nguyễn, the Board of Education president, states that
this program “has been a labor of love to get up and run-
ning”. NRCAL’s Director, Dr. Natalie Tran, provided sup-
port in developing the scope and sequence for Transitional
Kindergarten. The district is the second school district in
Orange County, and the 4th in the nation, to bring Viet-
namese-English dual language program to children.

The National Resource Center for Asian Languages (NRCAL) was designed to improve the
nation’s capacity for the teaching and learning of Asian languages including Vietnamese,
Korean, Chinese, and Japanese. NRCAL’s main focus is to improve the teaching, learning,
and research of Asian languages in the United States by drawing on the expertise of Asian
language scholars, educators, and community stakeholders.
Training students to be bilingual not only enhances their cognition, employment opportuni-
ties, and cultural competency, but also improves national business development, innovation,
and security. Our goals are achievable through collaboration with K-12 school districts and
community-based organizations.
Quizlet is an app that lets students take notes during class. Teachers can create sets of vocabulary and defini-
tions, such as numbers, colors, shapes, animals… Students can study with flashcards, or test themselves in
the forms of multiple choices, typing an answer to a question, or choose the True/False format. The tests are
randomized and students can choose to see the answer. A set can be stored in a folder, shared to others
