Monthly Newsletter January 2017 From the Manager’s Desk: Greetings Ponds Residents, Happy New Year! It’s 2018 and I look forward to a great new year serving as your Community Manager. My team and I are committed to ensuring that The Ponds continues to be the best place to live in Summerville. It’s been a busy year. You have probably noticed that there have been landscaping improvements at the Village Pond and along Hundred Oaks Parkway. Flood lights at the Pavilion were added for security, landscaping lights have been added, and as mentioned last month, we will be installing new security cameras at the Farmhouse and surrounding area. We are also awaiting the installation of additional street lighting on Hundred Oaks from Weston Hall to the Cresswind entrance. We continue to look for ways to improve our community and ensure your safety and have many more improvements planned for 2018. I would like to thank all our residents who have volunteered throughout the year as committee members as well as those who have stepped up to help on an as needed basis. It is your willingness to volunteer your time, service and expertise that keeps our community growing and thriving Again, we at Associa look forward to working with you this year and wish each of you a very healthy and Happy New Year! What is The Ponds Conservancy? The Ponds Conservancy, a not-for-profit community organization, has been created to enhance the quality of life and sense of community at The Ponds through educational programs, social events, cultural endeavors and environmental stewardship. However, the function of The Conservancy goes beyond protecting nature and the beauty of the land at The Ponds. Its overriding purpose is to become a thriving resource for community activity and spirit. The Ponds and Inland Rice: Early Example of Innovation The Farmhouse Sunday, January 28, 2018 2:00pm to 4:00pm The early history of Carolina’s principal cash crop, rice, is still visible in the swamps of the Lowcountry and particularly at the Ponds. The Ponds rice fields were the subject of considerable study from 2007-2010 when Brockington and Associates prepared their Inland Swamp Rice production context for the South Carolina State Historic Preservation Office and the National Register of Historic Places. Charles Philips, one of the authors, will present a discussion of how the Pond’s rice field presented the researchers with an innovative manipulation of the natural world to increase productivity at The Ponds. At the end of the discussion, Mr. Philips will take the group on a tour of the Ponds rice fields near Schulz Lake.
